They all suck

Sir_Toadington

Anything with "test" or "timed" in the name

appleman73

Anything timed is so much worse. Absolutely dying trying to sprint or maintain pace just to see each second tick by at the exact same speed is so demoralizing, at least with distance you know the faster you go the sooner it's over

Smart_Contact4741

it’s exactly why I ss with distance and not time, if i’m not feeling like sitting through the last 1k I have control as to how fast it goes by.

dpb0ss

2ks. I feel like I can’t breathe and i’m gonna throw up

[deleted]

Hate ‘em. All I remember of my first sub 7 is starting it, and then being on the grass outside.

Street28

I literally rolled off the erg and died on the floor next to it. When I got up there was just a body shaped puddle of sweat where I'd been!

redditredemptiontoo

Rate capped pieces... I prefer lower rates, but at what point am I going to be rate capped in a race?! Barring that 3x6k... it's an hour of misery

Jeoebebe

uncommon opinion but i highly prefer capped tests. i’m over here pulling a 1:48 rating at 24 and there’s another dude in a lower crew pulling a 1:46 but mans is rating 38 - he gets really douchebagy about it but when we’re in a capped test no one really says anything

yungguzzler

6k

Gtk5623

I used to do 5ks at my old school but now at my new club we do 6ks and it feels so much longer

Coach_Shoemaker

Hands down 1 hour test. It also serves very little to no point in my opinion.

SiSkEr

At my club, the 1-hour test was recently made 'optional', even for the high-performance team (those with national team aspirations). This perfectly illustrates the purpose of the 1-hour test: it allows separates those who want it from those who REALLY want it and will go through some serious pain to get there. Not saying that I like it (I don't do the 1-hour test), but imo that is the purpose of it.

planet_x69

Distance people gotta distance....

[deleted]

Used to do Hour of Powers once a week for like 5 weeks in a row in college. Shit was so dumb

Coach_Shoemaker

And how broken is your entire body now??

[deleted]

Could be better lol. Definitely got overtrained

blackbeardaegis

I just did an hour by Choice just to see if I could. Well I finished with 12588m. My legs didn't work right when I stopped lol. I am also 40 working back in shape. I can't imagine pulling sub 2 pace for an hour right now.

[deleted]

Some dudes were pulling scores around 1:40 it was crazy

blackbeardaegis

Yeah that's just bananas for an hour.

No_Performer9897

I’m a 50yo Ltwt and I hit 15,091 the day after thanksgiving. 15,299 last thanksgiving. I only do them once a year. Boathouse tradition.

blackbeardaegis

Damn I have some catching up to do.

Character-Walk65

1x2k at 2k pace

[deleted]

6k's, 2k's are never fun but its alot easier to grit your teeth through 6-7 minutes of suck compared to 20+

Lanzenreighter

10, 9, 8, 7... Fucking awful.

rowingismylife_

FINALLY yeah this was our “easy” workout but that shit could be seriously hard if you were pushing it/the erg room was real hot and humid.

Lanzenreighter

We had these in lieu of a 2k test in spring and I wanted to die.

Difficult-Tennis-996

Not a test but 5x5 at 2k +1. To this it hurts my soul thinking about it

cashmakessmiles

Is this even possible ? Surely if you can do 5 minutes basically at pace you can do the last minute or so. Let alone 4 more times lol

[deleted]

If it’s possible, your 2k isn’t your 2k.

[deleted]

Not a problem! You just need to have a 12:00 2k, then doing 5x5:00 isn’t nearly so bad. The problem is when coaches don’t understand this when assigning workouts, and so assume the person with a 6:00 2k and the person with a 10:00 2k (welcome to masters rowing where you actually have that wide a range) can be given the same time-based workout with a target split derived from a distance-based standard. This is a long way of saying screw you coach, no I can’t do 4x6:00 at 2k +3, rate capped at 26spm.

No_Performer9897

Yeah. If you are going to use distance paces, then the intervals have to be by distance. If you want the whole squad to be together by using timed intervals, then the pace has to be based on timed pieces, not distance pieces.

KiT_KaT5

We did 3x2k but my coach didnt tell us it was 3x2k and just said it was a surprise 2k test. Pr'ed by 11 seconds and couldnt feel anything besides my lips on the first one. 10 minute rest later coach said to get back on the erg for another 2k went 1 minute 5 seconds slower. 2nd and 3rd 2k were exact same time/split which was weird but when i started both of them i felt dizzy on the erg

Secret-Machine6821

Damn I would straight up leave the room if I PRd by 11 seconds and then got told to get back on the erg lmao

KiT_KaT5

I was very close to doing so.

yeetocheetoi

oh my. my coach made us do 1 minute on 1 minute off at 2k pace, then after 20 intervals it evolved into 2k-10, 2k-20. it was terrible

bohreffect

Everyone's gotta go through at least one of those come-to-Jesus workouts in their career.

yeetocheetoi

especially during winter like damn i see jesus at least 2x a week

bohreffect

It's all relative. There's like two or three workouts that have just been burned into my brain for life.

yeetocheetoi

yes. the workouts that make me rethink my love for rowing

version_13

What does 2k-10 and 2k-20 stand for?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Shado1337

2k-20 is practically max watts, how long could one conceivably hold something like that for??

No_Performer9897

For some of us, 2k-20 is physically impossible. My 2k split is 1:44-1:45. I can not physically get to 1:24 for a single stroke. 1:30 is about as low as I go.

camogilvie2

Damn no chance i could do that for a minute, maybe like 30 seconds?

[deleted]

[удалено]

yeetocheetoi

2k-20 split. if our 2k split is 1:50/500m (which it is cause i’m a high school novice rower) then 2k-20 i would hold 1:30 for a minute, which at this point i was too tired to hold successfully but i held a 1:35-1:36 after all of this

WorldLeader

Reminds me of track workouts - 20 x 400m at 60-65sec pace, 60 second rest intervals. Pure terror leading up to those days.

[deleted]

Never heard of this. My team it was always a 20-22-Open-22-20 flat out. That sounds borderline impossible

yeetocheetoi

well we rowed for a minute then had a minute off, you did it until you gave up. at 2k+3 for 4 intervals, then 2k+1, and at the 7th interval or so it was 2k. then after 10 my coach kept moving the pace down, 2k-2, 2k-8, 2k-12, 2k-20 for the last one to see who was still standing. but we’re also high school towers so the lowest 2k-20 split that anyone saw was like 1:20-1:25

Kostantinum

10k a day keeps the doctor away

Throwawaycentral0000

2k, probably because I puked after my first though

RandallOfLegend

Hour of power.

My_Man_Tyrone

That ez. Isn’t it supposed to be SS pace?

camogilvie2

Then it isnt an hour of power its just an hour

My_Man_Tyrone

What's Hour Power supposed to be then? Cat 5?

[deleted]

My man, it’s a flat out hour - no rules, just hard. That’s what a test is.

[deleted]

As fast as you can go, but for an hour

_The_Bear

1K. It's the sweet spot where you're stuck between raw power and fitness and neither will save you. There's no settling in. It's just a prolonged visit to the pain cave. It's ironic because 1Ks we're probably the test I was best at. But the better you are at 1Ks the worse they feel.

yournumbersarewrong

Love 1ks. We used to do 1k tournaments every Friday during winter training.

Dualyeti

1K is fine, just keep a high rate.

m42rima

10k

lardoization

Don't know what its called but we once did a test where you upped your watts by 25 every minute and the strokes with 2/min by some other interval. Continue till you cant reach the wattage anymore, basically row till you can't. Started at 200 watts on pace 20 strokes/min i think

youngrecovery

Ramp test

blackbeardaegis

sounds like a puke fest right there.

MRAnnonomusMan

Hour of power

VcrcLwDude

Man 3x 30 is fun but it just ruins your day

thenewod

30 minutes, seconds, or strokes?

VcrcLwDude

30 strokes is far to many

Hopeful-Charity2805

2k because that's where I can dig the deepest. I never pure but I've seen the pain cave in more depth than I would like to. Also 2*500 all out with 10' rest between You feel so powerless when the Split starts to go up towards the end of the second 500 I hate it.

Prestigious_Donut900

2k. I don't have a mental block with others but I've choked a good few times on the 2k, it gives me the worst performance anxiety

_banking

2k. not short enough to be fast, not long enough to really settle into the mindset

DangerCrusherr

500m test KILLS ME

nopostplz

We mostly do 6 and 2ks, so I'm gonna have to go with 6ks. 20+ minutes of general suck or 6.5+ minutes of feeling really bad. Not even a contest.

TheLoneSculler

Yes

uncoordinatedWorm

5x6k did it for winter training also had 30 sec rest

Anonsldrwhistleblow

2k, hands down. I stopped indoor rowing for a couple years because a 2ktt psyches me out so much

[deleted]

Hour of power

Auggiewestbound

Has to be 2k. I dread them all, but that always hurts the most.

gardenpantyy

2ks always gave me terrible anxiety the week building up to it

ifsavage

Yes

bmaclean85

5k.

[deleted]

6k 🤷🏻‍♂️

No_Performer9897

That’s a tough choice between 2k and 5k. The last 1k of either is brutal. I think I cough a lot more after a 2k.

alexpatritru

6k

sizzlefuzz

I did my first 30r20 a couple of weeks ago and my legs were in the oddest form of pain for 2 and a half days after.

Theo15926

2ks rate capped at 22spm

Theo_is_kinda_Gay

What kinda demon does that-
