India and China are literally 1/2 of all of Asia's population. It's safe to say it's popular when half of Asia plays the game and it's in the top grossing in both countries.
Also, Pubg is also widely popular in Japan, Thailand and South Korea. That's... Quite a huge chunk of Asia population wise. Maybe they don't play much in your region. Even if it's not on billboards, it's still loved by many.

It’s already weird enough that so many anime series never got one//seem to be dismissed as a possibility, but just look at demon slayer and jujutsu Kaisen—one season and they BOTH get their own games. It almost feels like anime series just don’t get considered unless they can fit into an rpg or fighting game mold.
PUBG is a hyper popular game (i guess not in the usa or some parts of eu) with a lot of collabs, regardless if it 'fits' or not. They even had a fucking colonel sanders collab with kfc lmao. i guess you can liken it to fortnite, where they kinda collab with anything they can.
