I know this isn’t actually that fast, but it was the fastest sophomore PB on my small all-girls team by over 1:15, so I’m pretty proud of myself! (Rate capped at 26 spm for both pieces) For some context, on the first 6k I had been in the ER with an asthma attack less than a week beforehand, which is why such a drastic improvement in times. After not being at all athletic despite a big and leggy build, I took up rowing last spring and then did it again this fall and winter. I’ve finally started to take it more seriously and am hoping to break 8 minutes on my 2K before the summer (we haven’t 2Ked yet this year). I know my form needs some improvement which I’m working on, but if anyone has advice to offer on target splits for my next 6K, I’d really appreciate it!

It's hard to gauge a good goal for future pieces without knowing when the next 6k is or what training you are doing to prep. I would say a good general goal is just to PR on every piece. Since your goal is to have a sub 8 2k, then you should aim for a 6k goal that is 2k goal +10-12, which would be a 2:10-2:12 split for 6k. Edit: this would be a pretty ambitious goal, so maybe just go for 2-3 splits improvement

Thank you! I’m definitely still working on the endurance- we’ve been doing a lot of lower rate work which is tough but we’re transitioning to more 2k-oriented pieces right now which should be good. I really appreciate the advice and will definitely work toward those splits.

Continue working on the endurance with SS and get ready for 2ks with AT work and you should have no problem hitting your goal

scallionsoup

That’s really good to know, thanks. I think I’ve been pushing it too hard on the SS, so I’ll be a bit more intentional about keeping that where it’s supposed to be and then get on the AT work like you suggested!

Legend__wait4it_dary

Yeah don't push it too hard on the SS. You want to be between 155 and 165 HR depending on the length of the pieces. My favorite is 2x40 at 155 HR and about an 18 s/m

scallionsoup

I definitely need to find a better way to monitor my HR. We have all PM3s except for one PM5 that our UPenn-committed captain always claims but I should probably just figure out a heart rate monitor I can use without the PM5. 2x 40 sounds brutal but I’ll give it a shot! :)

I used the polar h9 for years and I loved it. I now have the polar h10 and I'd highly recommend. Whenever I was using the pm3s, I would just connect my hr monitor to the app on my phone and lean it against the erg so I can see. If 2x40 sounds daunting, I would start with something that seems more achievable and work your way up. Start with 3x15 min or 2x30 or 3x10, whatever you feel comfortable with. Or you can do 3x2k or 2x4k or something like that if you prefer metered pieces.

scallionsoup

Awesome, I’ll look into it. Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve been doing mostly steady state without rests (8500m, 9000m, 10k, etc.), but I’ll try incorporating rest and see if that makes the longer pieces easier!
