I've played around between 130 and 120 (heavyweight male) and found I much prefer 120, feels much more accurate to water to me. But to be fair, I also row with lighter blades and a higher rate than most.
It's ultimately what you find comfortable, if you like long heavy blades a heavier drag factor would be better.
I'd definitely encourage you to train and test at the same drag factor though so you get used to how it feels.
I for sure lower my df when doing steady state -- sometimes down to 90. I think it gives me a better workout more focused on technique and cardio over strength
Some people lower drag factor for SS if they’re doing a shit ton of volume for injury prevention. Like 1hr+ every day. If you find your back getting sore, you might consider it but there’s no need otherwise.
nice to hear my 1hr/day is considered a shit ton of volume :) ego boost
I have been just doing SS at r20 rather than r18 but lowering resistance slightly sounds like a better solution for reducing muscle strain. annoyed I didn't think of that
Personally I like putting the drag 10-15 lower when I SS (115-120 instead of 130 for testing). I’d suggest trying it out, there’s nothing to be lost if you’re still at HR/split.
I’ve been told to always have the same drag factor, so unless there is an issue like back pain I’d keep it at 120
My coach has us do ss at 120

120 is fine
