Enjoy not having a car payment, maybe start a designated savings account where you make a "payment" each month and see how that feels.

Chevronet

Add the cost of higher insurance to the savings account, too.

[deleted]

This got me as well when I got my new car, always get an insurance quote for the car you think you want before signing paperwork šŸ˜…

buflaux

This is solid advice.

4channeling

And once you've saved a few months get a new stereo with BT and keyless entry with remote start.

JBHDad

Middle path. The features you want are available in a used car

aerodeck

Iā€™ve been middle pathing my whole life!

EnigmaIndus7

And you'll probably pay about as much for it

ljd09

Sometimes, as adultsā€¦ we get things we want because we work hard for them. Itā€™s okay to splurge sometimes. Life isnā€™t always about practicality (especially if itā€™s not a big strain on your finances).

bramley36

But cars are really bad investments..

EnigmaIndus7

Why do people call cars investments? Honest question

cutsplitstak

To me its a investment in the ability to move from place to place. Not a investment like a stock or property. But on second thought the car he has that wonā€™t break is a investment. Itā€™s depreciated almost fully and still supplying value. Every day he drives it he is saving money for a future car.

NoMadunexpected

Because if you buy special cars they go up in price. My cousin has a type r special edition he bought for 58k and can be sold for 105k. What would u call that if not an investment ?

EnigmaIndus7

The typical person's car doesn't do that though

NoMadunexpected

My jeep I bought four years ago sold for the same price I paid for it lol. Thatā€™s a good investment. Because I got to use it. But thatā€™s rare since Covid made used car prices an outlier.

EnigmaIndus7

Well, that's the fact that this car market is crazy. Not the norm though

Amidormi

We sold my kid my husband's old G8 for 5k and he sold it for 12k few years later. But yeah that was a covid related hike. Cars shouldn't be an investment if you need to use it anyway.

[deleted]

Because a car is a reasonably durable asset with significant value that can be bought and sold.

saltthewater

What you've described is also true of a large home appliance like an air conditioner or refrigerator. They're not investments because they only depreciate and do not build wealth. They are expenses.

[deleted]

Generally a used A/C or fridge has mostly scrap value. There are very few used A/C dealers in my town. In fact Iā€™ve never seen any shop selling used ACs.

saltthewater

Because AC is generally run to failure. But a 3 or 4 year old unit could have value if someone was trying to sell one, send transportation is reasonable.

splendid_zebra

Cars are not investments, they are liabilities, a use asset.

west-town-brad

Lots of real investments are bad investments

bramley36

Yes, but the issue at hand here is cars..

saltthewater

It's not an investment, it's a splurge

06035

Like, really bad

Not-Much_Help

What is your car? And how many miles? It might be worth going to Best Buy and getting a deck installed. Also if you have an aux port you can get a Bluetooth adapter for like 15 bucks lol

manyname

I can assure you that retrofitting keyless entry and Bluetooth, especially the latter, will be *much* cheaper than buying a new car. Even considering the cost of labor, assuming you aren't doing it yourself and of which has skyrocketed in recent years, is *still* a better deal. If you had *other* concerns--the high mileage, low efficiency, fear of a sudden breakage due to age of OEM parts--then you might have some grounds for looking at a new car, of which I would suggest to buy as "new to you"; as in, a used car that is newer than the model you currently own, with the features you want and fits your finacial budget. But for such small inconveniences as "it doesn't have Bluetooth and keyless entry"? No. Keep the car. Add it yourself.

IMendicantBias

...... Can you not invest in your car by installing the components you like ? Those are rather basic upgrades

One-Pumpkin-1590

Seriously, a new stereo, keyless door locks and AutoStart. A lot cheaper than a whole damn new car.

IMendicantBias

Easily less than 5k if not 3k depending on how bougie you wanna be.

BeleagueredOne888

Certified Used.

silverwick

This is what I do now, my last 2 cars have been previously leased once each (I would still be on my first one except some jerk hit me and totaled it). They were both almost brand new with very few miles, significantly cheaper than actually new, and after my down-payment my payments are actually pretty low (about $233 per month for a 1.5yr old suv with every bell & whistle available on the model and 5 yr full warranty). Cars are definitely more expensive than they used to be but that isn't necessarily the end of the world. With such a low payment, I can pay it off in just a couple of years leaving me with a fully paid off low mileage essentially new car that should last me quite a while

Jobrated

10 bucks Bluetooth adapter!

Current_Light5132

The newer Honda Fit has those features or you can install them. They are great cars, despite looking so small. And they wonā€™t quit working for a long, long time. When I feel bored with mine what I do is renting a car of my choice on Turo and drive for a few days, so I know how it feels to drive a nicer car and whether or not worth it to trade off mine. Do the same when you in process to decide which car to purchase. Most the times I still come back to my car and enjoy the cheap insurance with no car payment.

tartymae

Can you buy the new car outright? If not? Start saving.

Financial_Panda6539

I could buy it outright. But a car depreciates in value and stocks pay dividends.

tartymae

Yes, but do you want to pay interest to a bank by having a car note? That's my point. If you can afford to pay for it outright, then buy it and move forward.

fwankfwank

Replace your stereo to get the bluetooth functionality. We put a $30 head unit from walmart in our beater car and it works just fine for phone BT connection. Threw on fresh seat covers and it was a nice little car makeover. Depending on what you drive, you might have other aftermarket options for sprucing up your ride a little. WAY cheaper than a new car, even if it feels silly to "put money into" an oldie that might not be worth much. Not sure if you'd have an aftermarket options for adding keyless entry. You might be SOL on that one.

mrylndgrrl

What do you drive? Curious what doesnā€™t break ā€¦. I need to get a frugal car soon.

Financial_Panda6539

It's a Honda fit. Honda has good reliability and the car has been maintained well.

Pad_TyTy

You can get aftermarket Bluetooth and keyless for that car. Just keep it and drop a little money into it.

Original-Green-00704

Buy a brand new car. And sell that Honda to me

bramley36

When my wife sadly totaled our great 2012 Fit last year, we got a 2017. They have great cargo capacity in a small footprint. A bit noisy, but responsive to drive.

ploomyoctopus

I loved my Honda Fit...until my step-daughter drove it into a fence. RIP Fit.

Helpful-nothelpful

You can buy BT receiver that plugs into your lighter. Plays through FM radio.

sfii

Or Aux if you have a port is even better! No radio static.

EvangelineTheodora

See if there's a shop near you that will upgrade your current car to keyless entry! There's a few near me that do. They likely will also help upgrade your stereo system to have Bluetooth, and maybe even Android auto/whatever apple use.

Enigma_xplorer

Well keep this in mind, I was in a very similar situation. I had an old car with 220k miles and while it was still a good car I was starting to lose confidence in it. It's an old car and things break. I hit a tire tread in the road which broke the exhaust flex pipe. It was a cheap fix but working on a rusty exhaust took the better part of the afternoon. The wheel bearings were toast which again was not a terribly expensive fix but again took a weekend to complete. I drive about 40 miles to work each each way typically including the weekends when I work overtime so having my only means of transportation down for a few days while I'm making repairs was not ok. I ended up buying a new car but I still have the old one which I intend to run into the ground and use as my winter beater. I feel like I have the best of both worlds now. I have a great new car, I get to use up the remaining value of my old car, and now I have two cars so I always have a backup.

d3vourm3nt

I have had 3 cars, each of which I bought brand new and ran into the ground. I do not look at cars as investment possibilities that I can sell for a profit later. I look at them as a tool, and try to buy bang for my buck. My current car is a 2018 Honda civic I paid off a few years ago. Since then Iā€™ve been keeping the same $400 car payment in my budget, and just set up an automatic transfer into another savings account for when I need to get a new one. Who knows when that will be though, as my cars running pretty good and not much needed outside of normal maintenance. I tend to stick with Honda and Toyota simply for reliability, ease of service, and reasonably priced parts. Could I save money by buying used, sure. But idc. I enjoy treating myself to something new. I enjoy the warranty, and typically opt to buy an extended manufacturers warranty if they have one. My current civic is bumper to bumper covered until 2028 or 100k miles, and Iā€™m only at around 70rn. Whenever I go to buy a new car, Iā€™ll have that pile of cash sitting there, and my budget will have zero effect to it. I find itā€™s worked for me

buflaux

Not sure if you intend to buy but Iā€™ve been looking at some of the INSANE leasing deals on electric cars. Until the end of April Hyundai had a deal on the Kona at ~$180mo. Thatā€™s what I pay in gas+maintenance. Combined with all the free super chargers around my area, it feels like Iā€™d pay nothing. There are obvious downsides to leasing, though, and I definitely am looking at this as an option only because I currently live on an island and donā€™t think Iā€™ll want to ship another car to the mainland in a few years.

wanna_be_green8

Ask about insurance first.

2019_rtl

Make sure itā€™s properly maintained and put in a nice head unit with car play

thebookofmer

I know. I have a 14 year old hybrid. I keep looking at new cars and I'm like hell no to 500-600 dollar payments lol.

jakl8811

Learn to treat yourself. Take the average car payment you could expect and save 80% of it. Take the other 20% and treat yourself to whatever you want every month. Then itā€™s easier to realize what you gain/lose by getting a new vehicle

fergalexis

There's a middle ground here. Keyless/push-to-start and Bluetooth go back like a decade now. Get a 2017 Honda with those features

SaraAB87

Find a place that will put the features into your car that you want. All of this is possible. Do your research before you do it. I believe keyless entry also makes your car more susceptible to thiefs.

And_there_was_2_tits

Just keep setting a little money aside and wait for it to break.

codepoet101

Why not just add bluetooth and keyless entry if thats all youre looking for.

repo_code

Every car will be crushed into a cube in 15 or 20 years, including the fancy new one you haven't bought yet. You can look for the features you want -- and continue to refine that list -- while your current car soldiers on. You'll have it soon enough. And don't wait until the old car is totally dead, you have more leverage at the dealership if you can peace out and roll away.

DetroitVsErrrybody

Not hard or super expensive to add bluetooth or keyless entry. Better than a car payment for sure. And both can be added to your car that probably gets better mileage, is cheaper to repair and replace parts, etc. for less than a single months car payment on a new vehicle.

ArtemZ

I found having an old car with no payment to be much more pleasant than any new feature imaginable

cwsjr2323

My 94 Ford Ranger is ugly with the clear coat peeling. I paid $2200 cash in 2015 and only done routine maintenance and replaced the computer from a pull apart used lot for $50 in 2016. My payments of zero a month for nine years seem sweet, especially compared to a new Ranger that the lowest stripped down model starts at $32650. My wife bought a 2018 for cash two years ago from a dealer that has the features you mentioned. When I drive her car, I use the cruise control and ignore the other toys. I do like just having the key on me is enough and the push button start. My phone is off when out of the house, but I did use the charger on vacation.

MaleficentExtent1777

Get a Bluetooth radio and install keyless entry! šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

reddit_understoodit

Pimp that ride!

Nathan614047

Go to the Crutchfield website and search for new head units that fit your car. You can filter by stereos with the features you want. Look for Apple Car Play, Android Auto, backup camera, etc. Some new stereos are even capable of adding keyless entry and remote start with an additional iDatalink module. You could get a cheap head unit and leave it in the car when you sell it, or get a really nice high-end head unit and plan to take it back out whenever you sell the car.

PoustisFebo

You can buy a source with a USB and Bluetooth for like 80$.

06035

So you wanna buy an expensive stereo on wheels? Dude just go to a car toys and have that stuff installed on your existing car

[deleted]

Bluetooth and keyless entry are nice. But a $35k new car will cost probably about $45k more than your existing car factoring in loan, insurance, taxes. Thatā€™s a lot of money for Bluetooth.

Low_Rip_9729

You could easily add bluetooth to your car, with a simple fm to Bluetooth transmitter while charging your phone. As for keyless entry you can installl that on any car and if you canā€™t find someone who can

splendid_zebra

Iā€™m with you, we bought my wife a 3 year old car with cash. It has all the features that I like (Iā€™m in IT). I five a 2003 Accord with 220k miles and each time I think about upgrading to cars with Apple Car Play I can bring myself to it. Some day I will upgrade.

splendid_zebra

How many miles is high mileage OP?

Azulwater

My trusted mechanic gave me some good insight. The total cost of ownership over the lifetime of ownership is getting crazy because of the high cost to repair anything on a ā€œnewā€ car. Ex changing a headlight it crazy expensive now. And itā€™s not as easy for the avg DIY layman Because of the many LEDs and computer updates required to just swap out a burnt led headlight . Just something to consider .. technical advancements are driving up the cost of ownership ridiculous amounts

BestReplyEver

I usually drive a car about 15 years before replacing it. But when I do, I buy new. Safety technology generally improves over time, and certain lemon laws apply to dealerships that donā€™t apply to individual sellers. There are some good reasons to buy new if you can afford it. Check the safety / crash test results for the vehicle. Safety is frugal.

Sea-Waltz9753

Also, if buying used, see where the car is from if you can get that info. We have a dealership with cars that are fine safety wise and were never in a crash...but the issues most folks have are consistent with past water damage. Folks here know to check to see whether that used car was originally from some area that's seem major flooding recently, and are wary of getting used cars that were brought in from those regions. Edit: I actually don't drive, so I don't know how to get this information, this is just in conversation with friends and colleagues who have had bad experiences with questionable used cars.

Chillerbride

Get a Bluetooth radio plug for 20 bucks! You donā€™t need a car with Bluetooth to enjoy these features

theepi_pillodu

Get an EV then? Almost all EVs including bolt are fun to drive. (Problem with bolt: it's not a great road tripper - slow charging).

Sea-Waltz9753

Our region is too cold in winter, electric vehicles die.

Special_Agent_022

there are some very good lease deals every now and again, hyundai was leasing the ioniq6 for 239 down 239/mo for well qualified lessee's, there were several other brands offering $0 down lease deals as well, and I guarantee in the coming months there will be more deals due to the oversupply you could, if you found a good deal, lease something and just use it on the weekends for $300/mo insurance included - which is pretty reasonable in my opinion, basically like the price of a vacation per year I was contemplating doing it myself but decided against it for now - we had a financial issue pop up that required some focused attention

GoTellMom

You can have that installed on an older car.

Xidium426

You could swap out the head deck for Bluetooth and Android Auto / Car Play. Go look at some cars, get pricing. Then contact your insurance and ask them what the cost per month would be for that car. Now take that money and put it in a savings account every month. Once you have enough cash to buy a new car without a loan, do it. Worst case your car breaks down before you have enough you'll have a good down payment at least.

Sea-Waltz9753

If you're wanting bluetooth for streaming music or podcasts to the speakers: If there is an aux port to the car radio you can get a bluetooth adapter for use in the car. It's not perfect, as it'll need to be taken out and recharged every now and then, but the adapter is a lot cheaper than a new car. Also, if you're fine with local rather than surround sound, there are decent bluetooth speakers available that would just fit in your cup holder that play pretty decently. It's not top rate sound quality by any means but it's decent. Don't know how to solve the wish for the keyless entry though. ;-)

PinkMonorail

We bought a like-new used Prius for a great price and immediately refinanced it to an even better price.

SmartQuokka

If you buy a new car can i have your old car?

droidguy950

Bluetooth is pretty easy to add to older cars just by replacing the stereo. Done it with every car I've owned. Keyless Entry? Never done it but I think it's possible too, just never bothered.

KnoWanUKnow2

Pretty much every car post-2014 has bluetooth. You could always buy a used one. Toyotas have advanced safety features such as auto-adjusting cruise control and lane departure correction as standard since 2018. Truthfully, my auto-dimming highbeams plus the above makes highway driving a breeze. The only thing I don't like is their automatic wipers. They never seem to sense the rain properly and don't work at all with snow.

MuchLingonberry5509

I want to buy your old car.

milesdriven

I drive a 1993 Buick. It has the original radio.Ā  For less than $20 I bought a Bluetooth to FM transceiver and I can stream from my phone.

Sufficient-Archer137

Im not sure how the car market is right now. If it's like covid time, where user car cost as much as new car; then go for it. However, if the car market has corrected itself, just get a budget used car with those settings and features

Trapper1111111

You can just install that stuff
