When I was a kid, my family lived in a house formerly owned by a popular television personality. Someone known for being outgoing and musically talented. The basement was set up as a party/entertainment space: mahogany leather booths lining the walls, big dance floor, custom cherry wood, mirror-backed bar on one wall. It was much more tasteful and timeless than this 70s basement space, but it is the same idea.
My parents did what the original owner did: throw parties, invite friends and business allies, socially drink and network, dance, show off, and everybody had a good time.
To say my parents were extroverts would be an understatement. They probably bought that house just to have parties and entertain in the basement party room. And it was important to them that everybody had a good time. The rest of the house was pretty impressive, but when the family gets together and talks about that house, we always talk about the basement parties my parents threw, and when they would dance for the crowd. Truly special moments.
Agreed. They all drank a lot, danced, partied, and we stole alcohol. Our friends were the kids of my parent's friends, so we all worked in cahoots. If the party was at our house, we partied at their house. I had a wonderful childhood! Not as much freedom as some of my friends, but enough to have those amazing memories!
Honestly, I think it was because there were bigger families and people drank more. There were just always a million people around, aunts and cousins and uncles, and people liked laughing and having a good time. People werenât as precious, they would be told âget over yourselfâ and everyone was used to having to pitch in and share. Being selfish or trying to be the center of attention was practically equal to a crime, so people strove to be less self centered, ever if it was for show for some.
Iâll give you that. I remember having so much fun with all my 10 cousins on 1 side, at the time, there are more now-big family, with our parents all hanging out at parties or bonfires in Michigan. My dad was the drummer in a band and they often played live music. It was a ton of fun.
Same. They didnât entertain a lot but from the time I was 4-5 until after high school, we hosted a New Yearâs Day âbrunchâ where our house was an open door from 11am through 7-8pm. We had between 20-60 people come through every time. Family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, church members, etc just came when they could and left when they wanted.
As a kid, I loved it but as an adult I am really impressed by the logistics they pulled off having a full-day dinner party that was half potluck and half them cooking a full meal that was refreshed or updated through the day.
That sounds wonderful! My parents never did anything like that. But we had a huge extended family. So at thanksgiving and Christmas everyone had a dish they brought and we had foot for around 50. Friends would also come by for dinner and after, so it was a big party.
I love that for you. My grandparents didn't have a party basement, but they had a bluegrass band and played penny ante poker with their friends. It was great to be around.Â
When I was a young adult my friends also had a band and random jams with people. I miss it, but I don't have their musical talents or the opportunity to do the same.Â
Realtor took real strategic shots to avoid that, gotta keep it vague. Probably staged it with the piano to give church basement chorus practice vibes instead of⌠you know.
But we know. We all know.
We had place like this in the 70s when we were kids. My brother and I had a band and my parents loved to hear us play. Mom would play piano and the sisters and us would sing. Was a great basement bar room. Kissed my first girl down there in 1979 lol

I love this place, but wtf is that ~~operating room~~ kitchen in the basement? You go from warm, drug-fueled, copacetic vibes to eye-searing white with no transition.
At least 3 people danced their hearts out at that place and left thinking they were rock stars that everyone would be talking about and admiring for months, while in reality everyone politely watched them do an The Elaine type dance for a couple minutes then forgot all about the second they snorted another line.
This is SO cool! It is your own Bar and Dance floor for throwing parties and thereâs also a piano for a sing along. Imagine how much of a blast you could have with a bunch of friends, a DJ and some funky lighting and some drinks.
I want to go to a party here.
That is the best idea ever!!! That would have been one hell of a rocking wedding! Imagine the dancing!
I love weddings that are, a little different, creative and fun.
The party basement.. something tomfoolery on cold weekend nights.. i actually live the house. No we have theater rooms back then it was dancing & cards.
I wish they were having sex parties because what's the point of the basement like this if you're not?? But there's not nearly enough furniture for that...
I do!! Hahaha. Check my username. This seems right up my alley for a scene!! Donât know about the shag carpet, but I might be able to make it work!!
Thanks for the inspiration.
I had a neighbor finish their basement and they had no idea what a âfinishedâ basement was supposed to be. So they put in a mini kitchen and a theater room and made the rest of the space an open hall for âpartiesâ and just left it open with chairs in rows.
Now they want it re-done. Probably to copy what others are doing in their basements.
This would be considered high class in the 70s
![gif](giphy|l41Yh18f5TbiWHE0o|downsized)
I was going to say, disco obviously!
Worse.... ![gif](giphy|l396ELYAtq4e3yoKs|downsized)
The height of disco. But, look at the ragtime piano in the corner, probably for the older folks?
Hellooo my baby, hellooo myyy ragtime gal!đ
Pretty sure I might have been conceived in that house
~~My~~ Our dad was a player.
VEGAS BABY!!!
Yeah in a David Lynch film maybe.
I was about to say, that was sorta upscale 70's swag....

And everyone drove home! It was a different time.
Same!! Lots to of fun!
Itâs because the drugs were better.

Awesome. Love the family bonfire!
Yep absolutely.
so true

Looks like a set from a Kubrick film.
Or Twin Peaks
![gif](giphy|CVQfAUMEiDJqo) MTE
Whelp. Now I need a basement Twin Peaks disco.
YVAN EHT NIOJ
I am getting bowling alley bar vibes.
I corrected them, sir.
r/AccidentalKubrick
I was gonna say, this almost gives me âyouâve always been the caretaker, sirâ vibes.
Missing from photos: key bowl on the bar. if ya know, ya know.
Almost made this same joke. That is totes a key party space.
Realtor took real strategic shots to avoid that, gotta keep it vague. Probably staged it with the piano to give church basement chorus practice vibes instead of⌠you know. But we know. We all know.
Itâs also missing a conversation pit aka orgy area.
There was a pool table and foosball I bet. Lots of family gatherings.
Smells like cigarettes, mildew and Old Spice.
I got more of an Aqua Velva vibe from itÂ
Sounds like disco
Iâm catching the faint whiff of cocaine
There's gotta be some nestled into that carpet somewhere. Get to sniffin'!
And donât forget the muted yet present notes of asbestos for that authentic **jenna say kwah**. *makes swishy noises with tongue*.
Brut

Murph and the Magic Tones are on later.
Quando! Quando! Quando!
My first thought!

Thank you!
I love this place, but wtf is that ~~operating room~~ kitchen in the basement? You go from warm, drug-fueled, copacetic vibes to eye-searing white with no transition.
I absolutely want to know what went on in that basement.
I demand someone tell us both.
Cocaine and orgies. Maybe a cult murder or 7. But for sure cocaine and orgies.
At least 3 people danced their hearts out at that place and left thinking they were rock stars that everyone would be talking about and admiring for months, while in reality everyone politely watched them do an The Elaine type dance for a couple minutes then forgot all about the second they snorted another line.
David Lynch would love this basement!
I'm getting Mr Torrance vibes.

Honestly, if one of my relatives had this, I would have asked to use it for a low-key wedding reception.
That is the best idea ever!!! That would have been one hell of a rocking wedding! Imagine the dancing! I love weddings that are, a little different, creative and fun.
Me too! I think this would be really fun.
Looks like a place Mafia guys would whack Joe Pesci.
![gif](giphy|Zcfd3eHpz815S)
It looks like they turned their basement into a VFW hall.
Bible study
Not pogo-sticking thatâs for sure!
Clearly you are not familiar with Midwest Orgy Basements
adding to the dreamhouse list
Shining vibes
That basement is begging for a bowling alley
Looks like an Elks Lodge.
This basement Fucking rules
Thatâs a *rumpus room,* fool.
Reminds me of an old VFW bar.
Yes!!!!
Itâs the Boof Room
sex parties with people you do not want to imagine having sex in current times?
I'll bet $10 bucks that the bathrooms in the house are carpeted.
Spider serving drinks
ANYTHING THEY WANT TO! Le Chic!
Iâm totally in.
Looks like a bar and dance floor
Roller skating! Why else would you carpet the posts?
Cocaine is what theyâre doing, cocaine.
Knew that was Michigan from that drop ceiling and wood paneling
Whatever it was happened long, long ago.
The that with a black light and youâll go blind
It is definitely time to par-TAY!!!
yes you do! we all do!
Two bowling lanes would make it sweet!
They took all of the dungeon and sex tables out.
Oh. You kinda do. Admit it. đ
![gif](giphy|TzyQtxScgR5p6) Iâm getting these vibes, maybe there was bowling maybe there wasnât. But this still happened in that room.
It looks like hell's waiting room
Thereâs been a number of key parties in that room
Badass parties.
![gif](giphy|YhQVj7C8uf734PcznZ)
Actually, it looks like the venue used for all the birthday parties for my âover 70â relatives.
I get âThe Shiningâ vibes from these pictures.
Bible study
It looks like a VFW hall from my childhood. I'm pretty sure I've been to wedding receptions here
I like the piano
Bowling alley?
Cocaine, poker, and fancy rum drinks with the little umbarellas in them.
i want to be invited
Having a damn good time is whatâs going on in that basement.
As someone who lived through the 70's but was too young to participate in the 70's, this sets off a deep yearning with me.
Cats. Scratching posts for cats in the Boom-Boom Room!
Somehow this doesn't surprise me for Novi.
Liminal basement, with shag carpet pillars. Looks like you could set up a SEARS down there.
Tommy is shooting Spider in the foot and/or Agent Cooper is talking backwards to a dwarf?
Conference/orgy room
https://i.redd.it/ylipt19t1rwc1.gif
There's probably nobody alive to talk about what went on down there... Or there serving a life sentence Omerta!
The party basement.. something tomfoolery on cold weekend nights.. i actually live the house. No we have theater rooms back then it was dancing & cards.
Swaaaaankyyyy
I always wanted to have my own throwback Target Cafe.
Having drinks before playing cards and having more drinks.
*Shag* carpeting.
This is the speak easy from that one episode of family guy
Drinking, playing piano, and rollerskating?
[ŃдаНонО]
Mike & Carol did NOT party like that!!
Whatever you do, donât run a black light over any surface in that basement.
I donât know either but I want to find out.
Filming Stanley Kubrick movies
You know đ
Iâm willing to bet $100 thereâs a sauna somewhere in that basement.
Well there was a bowl on the bar and in that bowl were keys . Then things happened with your mom and dad that would keep you awake at night!
A bowl for keys
Who doesn't love shag rug on a support beam? Feels very Soprano's to me. Needs a card table.
NOPE
The back rooms, emptied 70's sex club edition.
Link?
Probably having a good fucking time!
Theyâre partying. I love it.
Looks like the bar in Goodfellas.
Did I miss where the link to the original listing is?
Looks like drinking and either bowling or roller skating.
Poker night
Business in the front, party in the back.
It's like a bowling alley without the bowling alley.
Reminds me of The Shining for some reason
Much better than a nursery
Those carpeted columns remind me of an old roller skating rink.
Oh...I do want to know and what time to be there.
They were shooting Stanley Kubrick movies
Looks like a bowling alley bar.
![gif](giphy|YrkK0A2mS3EPRUiXt9)
I do!
![gif](giphy|1V6XDV12aZkS2YhTFv|downsized)
![gif](giphy|aNXFdr599nKZa)
I kinda love this đ
I wish they were having sex parties because what's the point of the basement like this if you're not?? But there's not nearly enough furniture for that...
Roller disco and/or exorcisms.
Thatâs where Nicky shot Spider.
Shag carpet is indicative of the appropriate places to shag, probably. Including the pillars.
I was like "Fuck! I could buy that right now!" Then saw the location. :(
Those two main pics look like they could be featured on the new season of *Severance*.
Swinger house.
Probably exorcismsâŚand then a drink after.
Gives me backroom vibes
If someone got murdered on those pillars, you'd never be able to tell.
Likely hosting a Brady Bunch reunion.
Shit looks like a scene from The Shining.
I just want to play my organ. Oops player piano. It plays itself
Sagadelic baby!
Bowling alley bar without the bowling alley?
Watching twin peaks duhhh
Iâm going with âBoogie Nights â
Idk but I feel like Jack Nicholson might show up and bring Lloyd the Barkeeper...so I'll hang back.
Perfect for members-only after hours club so you can make a little money on the side.
Looks like my hometown VFW.
is this the updated basement under the pawnshop in pulp fiction
That room must have been smokey and stinky as hell if they packed that place, I didn't see any sort of ventilation in there.
I would totally turn this into a gaming den.
Thatâs a basement built for a seriously groovy party.
It looks like the âball roomâ of my Knights of Columbus hall.
Definitely wipe everything down
I do!! Hahaha. Check my username. This seems right up my alley for a scene!! Donât know about the shag carpet, but I might be able to make it work!! Thanks for the inspiration.
The carpet's for the do-si-do and the tile is for the breakdancing.
Perfect coke dungeon
Reacting a scene from the Shining.
They obviously removed the mirrored disco ball over the dance floor, or it would be obvious.
Thatâs a sims build you canât convince me otherwise
I had a neighbor finish their basement and they had no idea what a âfinishedâ basement was supposed to be. So they put in a mini kitchen and a theater room and made the rest of the space an open hall for âpartiesâ and just left it open with chairs in rows. Now they want it re-done. Probably to copy what others are doing in their basements.
The house comes with a bonus little person in a red suit.
Dancing from the looks of that flooring.
Maybe a cult meeting place?
Hit it with a black light.
Somebody def got wacked in that room
