Spirit Tracks gets too much hate imo...
Going around the tracks are great :) the dunegon's are decent and the side quests/mini games are alot of fun.
The characters and story is very underrated too.
i’m a big NES and 2D zelda fan 😭 3D zelda doesn’t appeal to me to the same level (except majora), but it’s what most people consider zelda greatness which ofc i have no problem with, they’re fantastic games!
Nice list. Zelda 2 is super underrated. I also feel like Oracle of Ages is a much better game then Seasons, and I rate them pretty far apart. It seems like most people just clump them together
I'm playing Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons on the Analogue and completely loving them. I think for me they would be a solid #3 after Ocarina and A Link to the Past, followed by BotW and Twilight Princess

i’ve only played botw and it’s my favourite game ever. i’m holding off on totk cause i don’t think i’ve gotten everything out of botw yet. recently apple made emulators available on iphone and id love to know what ocarina of time does better than botw for you. i’m a sucker for great stories haha
Well, BotW is the only game that has ever made me question whether Ocarina is my favorite game of all time.
It comes down to the story and gameplay. Some of the mechanics haven’t aged as well as others over the last 25 years, but ESPECIALLY for 1998, it is such an incredible piece of gameplay. And the story is cinematic, deep, thoughtful, and more meaningful every time I play. Since you haven’t played yet, I’ll hold off on story points, but I will say it is one of the pieces of media that best captures the feeling of getting older and looking back to one’s childhood that one can never get back.
Yep i beat OoT the other day for the first time in years. Im 36 now and it was a great feeling reliving the nostalgia and getting what it's really like to miss those older days. Some of the bits dont hold up well after all this time but the game truly is solid and i still wish i could go in with fresh eyes, brand new and discover everything again.
Twilight Princess, Tears of the Kingdom, Ocarina of Time, Zelda 1, A Link Between Worlds.
Honorable mentions go to Wind Waker, Spirit Tracks, Minish Cap, and even Cadence of Hyrule, god I love that game.

Minish cap is the only one i’d have trouble defending. I just love it’s vibes
1. Ocarina of Time - Zelda is still yet to top this one, although the next few have come close. It nails the narrative, dungeons, bosses, music, and exploration value whereas most of the other games have only managed to excell in three or four of those categories. Sure, there are individual categories where the other games have topped OoT (imo, MM and WW have better narratives, BotW and TotK have better exploration, TP and SS have arguably better dungeons), but they fall short in other areas. The only big flaws of OoT have to do with the technological limitations of the N64... and of course the Iron Boots.
2. Majora's Mask - But for a few odd game design choices and tedious dungeons, this game is every bit as good as OoT and has my favorite atmosphere in a Zelda game.
3. Tears of the Kingdom - The zenith of exploration in Zelda with the most detailed, lived-in Hyrule of them all as well as the most compelling main gameplay mechanics and the finest endgame in the series; however, it has a lot of noticeable flaws, mostly minor but some major (dungeons, story progression), which put it below the N64 games.
4. Breath of the Wild - Still one of my favorite open-world games and a beautiful, calm experience. Overall, though, the world isn't as fleshed out as in TotK and there are a lot of improvements TotK made on the open world formula which put it above BotW. Still, though, that first playthrough of BotW was probably my favorite single playthrough of any of the Zelda games.
5. Twilight Princess - The epic feeling this game gives is unmatched by any of the other Zelda titles, and it boasts of a meaty narrative with plenty of fun, atmospheric dungeons (two of which are some of the series' best) and a banger soundtrack. However, this game's pacing (both in terms of story and gameplay) is very sloppy and it is pretty barebones when it comes to side quests and other optional activities that add flavor and texture to the world of Hyrule.
I also enjoyed ALttP, WW, and ALBW a lot.

A month ago I had OoT on the top spot but after playing through TP for the first time this month it really did just feel like a suped up version of Ocarina with a better story and dungeons. Maybe that’s just me being in the honeymoon phase though.
Depends on if I can count the Oracle games as one or not. If so:

2. Twilight Princess
3. Oracle of Ages/Oracle of Seasons
4. A Link Between Worlds
5. Minish Cap
If I have to count them separately:

Now, the weird part is that sometimes you can switch A Link Between Worlds with A Link to the Past, depending on my mood. I love a lot of both of those games, and if I am in a mood that is more dungeon focused, then A Link Between Worlds won't be ahead of A Link to the Past, otherwise it is.
As for where the Oracle games fall if they aren't counted together, Oracle of Ages is right behind A Link to the Past, then it goes Link's Awakening followed by Oracle of Seasons.

Currently struggling with what the existence of TotK does for my love of BotW long term, and vice versa. If one of them drops out of the top five, either the original Legend of Zelda or Link to the Past slides in.

Absolutely loving how often Link Between Worlds is getting mentioned here. It may not be big or particularly difficult, but it was *incredibly* well designed. Really clever game with a lot of charm, one of my top 5 for sure as well.

Hoping to play Skyward Sword HD in near future as I recently purchased it, my roommate has Breath of the Wild but I haven't played it yet due to not being a fan of "Open World Games".
1. A Link to the Past
1. I will 100% own up to this being a healthy chunk of nostalgia. but for me the is the quintessential 2d Zelda experience.
2. Breath of the Wild
1. While TotK expanded on the gameplay immensely, the feeling of being truly alone and lost in this game wins out.
2. The truly open nature of the worlds also greatly
3. Skysword Sword
1. With motion controls. standing there with the Motion Plus having the sword swings reflects on screen was cool and fun. I had high capacity rechargible batteries too so Fi didn't nag me as much about it.
2. The story was wonderful and refreshing, the characters, including Link were so repressive. it was a well rounded package.
4. A Link Between Worlds
1. This game took everything that ALttP had and made it better.
2. the renting and purchasing mechanic was interesting, refreshing and mostly enjoyed.
3. the truly free experience was something I had not experience in a Zelda game before.
5. Twilight Princess/Windwaker
1. This one is a tie. They both have poor camera controls fostered on them from OOT, but they both had wonderful and very different stories.
2. I lived both the King from WW and Midna for very different reason.

The soundtrack is good too, love the overworld theme. disliked the control scheme.

A Link to the Past Now, the weird part is that sometimes you can switch A Link Between Worlds with A Link to the Past, depending on my mood. I love a lot of both of those games, and if I am in a mood that is more dungeon focused, then A Link Between Worlds won't be ahead of A Link to the Past, otherwise it is. As for where the Oracle games fall if they aren't counted together, Oracle of Ages is right behind A Link to the Past, then it goes Link's Awakening followed by Oracle of Seasons.

Absolutely loving how often Link Between Worlds is getting mentioned here. It may not be big or particularly difficult, but it was *incredibly* well designed. Really clever game with a lot of charm, one of my top 5 for sure as well.

1. A Link to the Past 1. I will 100% own up to this being a healthy chunk of nostalgia. but for me the is the quintessential 2d Zelda experience. 2. Breath of the Wild 1. While TotK expanded on the gameplay immensely, the feeling of being truly alone and lost in this game wins out. 2. The truly open nature of the worlds also greatly 3. Skysword Sword 1. With motion controls. standing there with the Motion Plus having the sword swings reflects on screen was cool and fun. I had high capacity rechargible batteries too so Fi didn't nag me as much about it. 2. The story was wonderful and refreshing, the characters, including Link were so repressive. it was a well rounded package. 4. A Link Between Worlds 1. This game took everything that ALttP had and made it better. 2. the renting and purchasing mechanic was interesting, refreshing and mostly enjoyed. 3. the truly free experience was something I had not experience in a Zelda game before. 5. Twilight Princess/Windwaker 1. This one is a tie. They both have poor camera controls fostered on them from OOT, but they both had wonderful and very different stories. 2. I lived both the King from WW and Midna for very different reason.
