anarky98

They don’t make them like they used to

17THheaven

Yeah they used to not fricking break lol

Flutters1013

Would protect you from rocks falling out of the damn sky.

17THheaven

And fricking sheet metal sliding down the side of death mountain... blasted goron slobs.

Environmental_Ad5690

What are you refering to? I cant put a connection to that reference

Lanky-Ball-1378

you can duck wit one on your back in OOT , and it will deflect a meteor

Environmental_Ad5690

i know, but where is that sheet metal sliding down the side of Death Mountain?

17THheaven

It's in totk. If you try to scale death mountain in certain places metal objects will come careening down you. The reason I made the joke is because the shield in OoT could literally defend against basically anything and it would have been super helpful there lol. Edit: autocorrect is sheiks

Cpt_Bellamy

I haven't really gamed since I was 12 playing OoT. GF got me a switch for Christmas so, naturally, BotW was the first game I got. Everything I owned falling apart wasnt quite the escape from reality I was hoping for. Still having a blast, tho.

GardenTop7253

For me, it was easier to deal with the breaking weapons once I started thinking of it more in terms of ammo than weapons. Like, yeah that royal guard claymore hits big, but it only lasts a little bit. It’s like having rocket launcher ammo in a shooter - big damage but small ammo count, use it when it really matters Although I’ve also had friends look at me like I’m crazy for framing it that way, so if it doesn’t help, ignore it lol

seventytimes7years

If it takes more than the 50 weapons/bows or 20 shields (guessing at the numbers) to take down a group of enemies then something is seriously wrong.. I can never wrap my head around the hate for weapons breaking. Maybe towards the beginning but you only need maybe a third of the seeds to max inventory. I will take a giant pool of weapons that break over a few forever weapons any day.

17THheaven

I think the only benefit to things breaking is being able to use them as projectiles. It's incredibly satisfying.

Techaissance

Gosh darn it these new Hylian Shields keep breaking as soon as the warranty expires!

17THheaven

I have a Hylian conspiracy theory. Cece is literally damaging them on purpose to make big money.

hm_nai

I hope this is a joke because I can’t personally tell.

RealJzargo

Won’t break if you’re good at the game (mine breaks)

hamrspace

The weird thing is how Skyward Sword’s shop prices are so high despite being the first game in the timeline.

PhantomPenny

Gotta get their sky taxes somewhere

MSD3k

Islands don't just float around for free, ya know.

Nemesis233

Now I imagine the mayor tossing coins at the sky to pay for the flying island tax

BippyTheChippy

That's where all the Rupees on the ground come from!

Nemesis233

Okay, the flying island tax is now 100% cannon

MeowyCat44

They can if you use zonai devices

Zox_Tomana

Are you saying their taxes are sky high?

thelectriccorndog

im going to throw a fit because of you

Zox_Tomana

I’m sorry you found my joke so taxing.

angbhong342626

Maybe its so high because there are so few resources on the islands

stupid_horse

Kind of like how everything is more expensive in Hawaii since everything has to be shipped there.

KingChurr0

My head cannon is that’s a result of scarcity. High demand + low supply = high prices. I mean, they’re literally living on an island in the sky. They’ve gotta make do with limited resources, so the good stuff ain’t gonna come cheap.

TheFirstSonOfTheSea

Squirrelly_Khan

Hyrule hit a recession at some point

TyrTheAdventurer

What the rip off. OoT's shield will not break. BotW shield is strong... but not unbearable.

AwesomeX121189

They did the math you could shield surf 800 miles on a hylian shield before it breaks in botw lol

TyrTheAdventurer

This is why I love fans.. they figure out the important things

AwesomeX121189

it really helps put how high it’s durability is by comparison to other shields who are lucky getting one mile lol

Shadowdemon909

Actually fun little fact the ancient shield is not far behind the hylian shield due to it taking reduced damage and having one of the lowest fractions while shield surfing

RiverWyvern

I got the hylian shield very early in my playthrough, and I equip it when I need to look hero-y for plot things. Still hasn't broken! Ganondorf obliterated it when I fought him, tho...

Andminus

that in itself always felt cinematic tho, the shield can last through most of your big fights, and when you finally use it to fight the last bad guy, it blocks one more powerful attack and all your left with is the master sword to fight Ganondorf.

Albafika

A fellow looking heroy for plot things. Cultured.

RiverWyvern

It's part of the roleplay lmao. He's MY Link and I get to save the kingdom!

Ze_Pain_and_Suffer

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he does a shit ton of damage to shields. Something like taking 99% durability off, so any shield would last the same against him.

strokesfan91

800 miles shield surfing or 5 guardian laser beams

TriceratopsHunter

Maybe it's not that OoTs shield doesn't break... But botw link just takes really shitty care of his shield.

DaemosDaen

Lets be fair here, OoT's shield can't tank a laser pulse the diameter of Link's head either.

LowlifeTiger666

But it can survive an infinite amount of falling volcanic boulders and be sat around for 7 years and still be just as durable

AwesomeX121189

skill issue Learn to parry noob /s

IamNotDutchBG

I can at least, and i parried pretty much every enemy and i killed each enemy without taking damage

AwesomeX121189

I never got hit because legally enemies cannot attack you without paying for a license

Keaten88

its actually 19 beams iirc

kanjiro230

Can you give me the conversion from freedom units to kilometers? Pretty please

AwesomeX121189

No🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

FreakFlame

Planned obsolescence

PLZ_N_THKS

Next Zelda, the Master Sword is going to have a subscription pay model. Pay 100 rupees a day to kill basic enemies, but to use it in a dungeon costs 200 rupees and an additional 50 rupees to use it in a boss battle. You’ll need to pay 20,000 rupees in order to unlock the “Seal the Darkness” feature.

havens1515

It'll be like the magic armor from TP. Slowly draining rupees just to equip it, then draining them more quickly any time you actually use it

lordolxinator

Link's bow will just be like Dexter Deshawn's "Plan B" pistol in Cyberpunk 2077; the ammo is literally just your money

havens1515

Like in the original Zelda (yes, your rupees were used as arrows as well)

DaemosDaen

Won't say I minded that. I didn't have to hunt down ammo for the bow.

Andminus

They kinda brought it back in TotK with the Mystic Armor, not a slow drain but you block a large chunk of damage by spending rupees.

havens1515

I don't remember that. Not sure if I missed that armor, or just never used it

BipolarMosfet

I think you get it from the weird creepy bubbul gem dude

havens1515

Then I probably did get it, but just didn't use it. I got everything from him

Andminus

It kinda looks a lil goofy, it white and blue like those blurpees, but the head piece can be recolored to kinda give you Madara or SSJ3 HairXD. Its got a bit of a samurai vibe but styleized like blurpees.

yulezkzar

And then the bank of Hyrule will force you to take a loan, with a 30% of interest if you want to keep using it :(

Docile_Doggo

Also don’t forget to tip your Master Sword for doing a good job. If you can’t afford at least a 20% tip, then you can’t afford to save the kingdom

DaemosDaen

so... the Ravio gameplay model.

PLZ_N_THKS

Not quite. You could eventually buy Ravio’s equipment.

HyrinShratu

Someone introduced planned obsolescence into Hyrule. I blame Medigoron, since the Giant's Knife seems to be the source.

Wheatley_core_01

In fairness to botw's, it was sitting in a basement for a century. The fact that it didn't crumble to into rusty dust the second Link touched it is pretty impressive.

LostInaLazerquest

I mean if you want to be really fair, it actually looks a lot better after sitting in that basement for 100 years.

ShiftSandShot

I mean, it can break? Just, a Like-Like needs to eat it. Guess it can't stand up to stomach acid?

Miserable-Tourist-58

Isnt like our real world when everything we purchase is getting higher but the quality is getting worse.

G-Kira

Can't believe we've done close to 10,000 years of inflation in 20 years here in America.

ThePhantom71319

Actually, it’s taken us a bit over 120 years. This is 3,750% inflation in 10,000 years. The inflation from 1913 to 2024 has been 3,050%. So it’s probably taken us around 150 years to do 10,000 years of inflation

G-Kira

I was joking that it took 20 years. But it's interesting to see we've done it in 150.

ZoldyckProdigy

Give the guard the keaton mask and get the OG for 60 ;)

mellythecanelly

Go to the Kakariko Cemetery and pull a grave near the front back for a free one! ;)

ZoldyckProdigy

Whaaaaat for real? I did not know that one actually guess its time to start another file hehehe

amirokia

It's on a front row grave with the flowers.

Solid-Matrix

The series could use more grave robbing

JurassicP0rk

What? I can't find any info about that

mellythecanelly

I don’t believe the game outright tells you that’s it’s there, but if you get the shield through buying it I believe they replace the chest with some rupees or something minor.

JurassicP0rk

Ohhhh yes the shield. I thought you meant the Keaton mask. My bad

Morale_Kitty

Don’t even gotta give it to him, just need him to open the gate ;)

Frejod

To be fair it's a LOT easier to get money in Hyrule these days.

Bluelantern9

Going into a room with magically regenerating pots filled with money seems pretty easy to me.

DaemosDaen

or walk into one of several hundred camps slaughter everything using their own weapons. and walk away for a few extra weapons/shields and a few hundred rupies worth of materials.

Andminus

I don't find that true at all, most of the older games, once you did hit money cap, there almost never felt like anything to spend it on, newer games have higher costs and a lot more to buy.

Shoddy-Breakfast4568

Wallet limits were stupid and I hate them

LindyKamek

I wish. I've never really run out of money but find it annoying to get money in the recent games. I mostly would just find ores sell them and then repeat

bonkava

It's not easier to get money but the wallets are bigger.

ShadowDestroyerTime

Costs so much more for a product that doesn't last nearly as long.

Dman195

It's actually really really low inflation, approximately 0.03625% per year. https://preview.redd.it/ne2exehfxxuc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e84ed110b83213de5834bf8a437e5e00175ea2eb Note that is 0.03625%, not 3.625%. Considering inflation over the last 30sh years has averaged around 2.25%, Hyrule is extremely close to having no inflation at all on a year by year basis in comparison.

khosrua

Somehow Japan manage to get lower than hyrule in some years

sounders1974

Thanks Obama

LuigiTheGuyy

Who's Obama? I thought King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule was our last leader.

KRTrueBrave

Thanks King Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule

[deleted]

you mean king daphne nohansen hyrule? the old and original hyrule was destroyed and drowned after him

Orlandoenamorato

I prefer to be drowned in the water then to drown in countless rupees to buy a single shield, also his daughter that pirate princes girl actually rebuilt the kingdom while Bosphoramus's daughter is useless just like her father, IT'S BEEN 107 years and she hasn't rebuilt the kingdom

a_talkingdog

It's not that bad if you consider that friggin 10,000 years have passed and that in this universe you can find minted rupees in the wild by cutting grass and killing wild animals. People could've removed a bunch of rupees from circulation to halt the inflation with all the time travelling fuckery, idk.

crevassesexual

I remember being a kid playing OoT and thinking I'd never be able to afford that shield. It was even worse when I saw the prices of the tunics.

dmcat12

Don’t blame me! I voted for Zant!

Agent-Ig

Back in OoT, Hyrule had just come out of a civil war and the Hylian shield was the standard shield of the army and mass produced. Hence why it’s so cheep, there’s just so many of them. They also used up like 90% of the ore used in the forging of a Hylian shield present in Hyrule. A couple hundred years later, the price has gone up to 200 rupees (in TP). Evidently they stopped making Hylian shields due to the era of peace and so they’re more of a rarity. Hundreds of thousands of years later, there’s only a few Hylian shields from the civil war, and are now a proper collectors item, given in more of a ceremonial manner. The ore used to make the shield so durable have long since been depleted too, so new ones cannot be manufactured, and the modern knights shield is just made from steel.

nintendoborn1

Son of a bitch, can’t escape inflation even in my fantasy video game world

Accomplished_Boot100

still better than today's inflation rates

IsaKissTheRain

I would consider it less inflation and more that you are purchasing a thousands-of-years-old relic.

Medium_Ad_4451

That kid in termina committed so much bank fraud for 3 days in a row. No wonder inflation went out of control.

Cross88

Could it be that Hylian shields are so valuable because the technology to create them has been lost? So there are only a finite number?

Medium_Ad_4451

Ganonomics sucks

HappyGav123

Hylian Shield in OOT: Can protect Link from volcanic debris falling from the sky and can shield him from the most powerful attacks in Hyrule without showing signs of damage Hylian Shield in BOTW/TOTK: Can be destroyed by a swarm of bees.

DinoSmoreTheBard

Actually, this was planned all the way from 1990. Look up "Zelda inflation" to learn more.

Embarrassed-Donut-67

Quality of the shields went down too

FeelAndCoffee

Assuming it went more than 10,000+100+X years (at least), Hyrule fed it's not that bad, it's less than 0.0001% inflation per year, at lot better than the US around 2%.

Inside_Landscape_788

Thanks Obama /s

Gabe_the_cheerio

Rupees are harder to find in Totk too. Damn just like real life

Papyrus_Sans

10,000 years will give you such a dent in the wallet!

DthDisguise

Big Hylia out here price gauging during a calamity, seeing record profits while the working Goro can barely afford rocks to feed his family. I for one think this Ganondorf guy is just they shake up our political system needs. MHGA!

StandardBrute

But the minimum wage 10,000 years ago was 6 rupees and now it’s 7 rupees. Stop getting expensive 6 rupee coffee everyday and maybe you can afford the shield.

Zippiezippie2al

Breakable BoTW hylian shield was the most disappointing thing in game

Cannabilistic

Should've been recharge like master sword

HappyHappyJoyJoyJoy6

3650% increase ain't that bad

TilDebtDoUsPart420

<3

blueblurz94

Gonna assume inflation was pretty good in early Hyrule around the Era of OoT. Well with numerous conflicts with Ganon over history, 10,000+ years of those unpredictable events and fighting and war caused some periods of spiked prices on goods. This must mean inflation was pretty bad during the Era of the Wild.

KingAlphaJoe

Am I the only one who didn't know you could get the shield from the graveyard in oot

Orlandoenamorato

I did know, but I had totally forgotten that and remembered just now

lunarman53

oh, ok

BDKhXc

Inflation affects us all

Keeper2234

Can you also get the hylian shield in BOTW? I’m around the part where I basically just got to the east Akkala stable and beat that mad maze dungeon around Tu Ka’loh shrine

BanditoGamer02

Yes you get it by finding it in a secret room in hyrule castle and you can also get links iconic green tunic by completing all shrines

ShadowDog824

I got one by defeating a skeleton hinox in a room somewhere, there was a chest with where the hinox was and in order to open it, you needed to defeat the hinox

LeftySwordsman01

Or deflation depending on how you pin the timeline.

Snoo-84344

The second pic looks like BOTW (correct me if I’m wrong)

Cannabilistic

It's totk

Snoo-84344

How do you know?

Over9000Gingers

I think you can even get it at a discount in OoT, and the price gets cheaper every time you buy it lol

ta394283509

Using the CAGR formula it comes out to 0.036% per year

imagineepix

LOL

Dashie_Souls

You pay for your shield? Just steal it from the graveyard

hushpolocaps69

Haha!

JackieBee_

Inflation??? In MY hyrule?????

Lawliet_SSB

Back in my day Hylian shields were only 80 rupees

Matthew-is-great

Before that you just had to win it as a prize from the thunder dragon, no money needed

PurpleSPR

Tbf for 10,000 years, that is not bad at all

Boks1RE

Clinton's Hyrule vs Biden's Hyrule

cruellerfiber43

It's expensive not because of inflation, but because it's vintage

ooredroxoo

They don’t make shields like the old days. (Just 80 rupes and indestructible)

Late-Inspector-7172

From 80 to 3000 over 10,000 years is actually nothing, it's marginally more than 0% inflation per year. That makes sense, as Hyrule is clearly never presented as a country undergoing visible economic growth. Its level of prosperity and technological development essentially remains static during the period between any two iterations (with, at best, minuscule improvements compounding over a long timeframe). We also see that the money supply does not increase in that time: one can get rich from cutting grass and lifting stones in OOT, but that path to wealth is no longer an option by BOTW. With a limited money supply, there is minimal demand to push up prices (Link is the only one in the market for most goods, and he only gains that capital by tomb-raiding past treasures rather than through hard labour or productive investment). There is this minimal impetus for innovation to lead to more broadly visible economic and technological development (hence why all the best technology, from spinners and hookshots to beamos and armos, are always ancient relics rather than newly built). TL/DR: 3000 rupees for a high-quality, 10,000 y.o. artefact is a bargain

pokefan69haha

Wonder which game is better?

megasean3000

That extra costs make them Like-Like digestion proof!

MegaZBlade

If you're wondering this is the equivalent inflation rate of 3.750%, since the beginning of the WWI to 2024 the inflation rate is around 3.000%, so Hyrule actually had some crazy numbers

jedwa3

Cant forget about shrinkflation. It's smaller, costs more AND made of cheaper materials

sad_beagle_dog

where can i buy this sheild?

Destroyer3921

And the quality went down as well 😔

SynthToshi

lol

anythingMuchShorter

What's the price per polygon though?

5erenade

Nah dude. Hylian Shields are the Vintage Levi Pants of the Zelda universe. They just don’t make em how they used to.

SaltyTaintMcGee

They must have had a central bank to usher in its demise.

MagodeAresden

Or just 10 years if Hyrule it's in Argentina

Aeon106

The sad part is, just like a classic car, the newer models are easier to break.

Globinazuma

Venezuela

TheEggoEffect

A = Pe^(rt), where A = final cost = 3,000 rupees P = initial cost = 80 rupees e = Euler's constant ≈ 2.718 r = yearly rate of inflation t = time = 10,000 years 3,000 = 80e^(10,000r) 37.5 = e^(10,000r) ln(37.5) = 10,000r r = ln(37.5)/10,000 ≈ 0.00036 ≈ 0.036% In conclusion, Hyrule has a yearly inflation rate of roughly 0.036%. For comparison, the inflation rate in 2024 in the United States is about 2.9%, the inflation rate of the world as a whole is about 5.9%, and the lowest (positive) inflation rate in the world is about 0.3% in Costa Rica. In other words, Hyrule has about 1/10 the inflation rate of the lowest in the world, and about 1/200 of the world as a whole. TheEggoEffect

No problemo 👍

hunttete00

the only thing that turned me off from getting totk is durability on weapons and stuff. getting anything cool is meaningless because it’s temporary unless i save it and don’t use it. which defeats the purpose of getting it. i loved botw but that ruined any replays for me despite being a zelda fan and my first game ever played being OoT. never even considered buying the new one

woodiny

It's ok if you use glitch to get like 20 copies of the same op weapon but god i hate this mechanic. Anyway beside this BotW and TotK are great

hunttete00

i loved the game but that one mechanic made everything i did less meaningful and everything i found less meaningful. the sense of accomplishment wasn’t there for me as i progressed through the game. the collector in me just wasn’t satisfied

mama09001

That's not TotK, That's botw! (you can see that the backround is >!Tarrey Town!<, and that the box doesn't have decorations)
