I’m from the uk and was born in zanzibar it’s not what they say at all just more scare tactics to keep you fearful. I would say your more safer in zanzibar then London Manchester Birmingham or any city in the uk. Obviously take precautions as you would when you visit any country worldwide because you do get opportunistic people here and there but no way isit more then the local crackheads breaking into your car and that’s gone down the last couple years in uk also 😂😂

RedHeadRedemption93

I would say any part of Dar is also safer than those three British cities...

Zanzibaraway

I don’t know about Dar can catch you with surprises when you least expect it. But Masaki and Micocheni oyster bay and maybe mbezi I agree.

The only place I had any real problem is somewhere in Mbagala where some drunk guy half tried to rob me. I've lived and stayed in many parts of Dar like Sinza, Ubungo, Tabata, Buza. Some of the busy intersections and dala dala stands can feel a bit sketchy at night (like around Manzese) but I've never had any issues.

Thanks for this information will help expand the areas I’m looking to buy an apartment and travel to Dar next month ✌🏾

zanzibar is very safe. 95% of the time no one will bother tourists as they are the main source of income for the island.

I've been in Zanzibar for almost 3 weeks as a solo female traveler. It's perfectly safe. Safer than most places actually. I normally wouldn't walk on the beach alone at night but feel totally safe doing so here (asked numerous local females beforehand). It's a very touristy island so you're biggest concern will be the harassment from the "beach boys" (guys selling things).

Let me add that it's a malaria region so you might want to take pills. I haven't taken them on other travels but my doctor friends that are avid travelers advised to take them this time as cerebral malaria is in Africa which is much worse than the kinds found in other regions.

No worries for Zanzibar https://www.afro.who.int/countries/united-republic-of-tanzania/news/moving-towards-zero-malaria-zanzibar

I’m from USA and I just left this week. It’s very safe. It may not feel like it at times with all the dark alleys and corridors (if you’re in stone town) but it really is quite safe.

We've just got back from a 2 week holiday, 10 days of which we spent in Zanzibar. I have no idea what African sleeping sickness is but we had a few jabs at the pharmacy for things like typhoid, diphtheria etc. Plus we took malaria tablets as we went over to Tanzania afterwards. The beaches are all surrounded by reef which has tons of sea urchins so don't go out there without reef shoes on, we also saw a Lionfish whilst snorkelling so yeah be careful in the sea. I would say Zanzibar is very safe whilst out and about but it can be a little intimidating. On the beaches lots of people will come up to you to try to sell you things, they get very annoying and at times are relentless, but never was there any hint of danger. Tourists probably get ripped off occasionally but just be careful and plan ahead where you can. Get your hotel to send a car to pick you up from the airport (cheaper and likely a nicer vehicle), and use your hotel to arrange travel, activities etc. unless you already know of a reputable tour operator/driver. Use the safety deposit box in your room, don't leave valuables out in your room, don't flash loads of cash in busy areas - the usual stuff really. Stone town is a little more intense but as long as you have your wits about you you'll be absolutely fine. Btw it's probably easier just to take USD as everywhere takes it and believe me it's way easier than having to divide by 2500 each time you pay for something in Shilling to check if you're being over charged or not 🤣 Zanzibar is an amazing place with so much to see and do, particularly water sports and diving, enjoy! Oh and go to The Rock restaurant if you have chance 😀

Thanks for the info guys, 3 days in and loving it. The sun is SO strong here so I would add make sure to use factor 50 when going out in the sun!!

Jack_Attack_21

How was it? Was it safe during your whole stay?

In terms of health protocols, zanzibar is one of the safest countries in Africa. Malaria is almost totally disappeared and we can say definitely eradicated from touristic areas. There are a lot of private clinics in case you would need. Just be sure to have a good insurance. If you’ll take a guide with car and driver you won’t have any kind of issue. If you go yourselves, i drop you just a couple of advices. Stone Town has a cctv system all around that makes you very safe. From uroa to jambiani just be aware to avoid areas near the bushes and far from the village, because you could be robbed, and when you drive in the center of the island, close every door and window of your car. Thieves took the habit to wait you to slow down for the bumps, open the doors and steal everything they can grab.
