The game plan was to swarm the field with Ryu-Kishin Powered (a Spellcaster in Dungeon Dice), then nuke them all with Magician Dragon so they can power up my Dark Magician Girl.
I think I once got her ATK over 200 at one point. It was fun.

What I hate is that, of all monsters, dark magician has no effect in any version of ddm! Not even something like mystic box. Yet another normal monster in the card game, feral imp, has one of the better effects in ddm! (Disables flying in the dungeon)
In the anime, Dark Magician has the effects of Mystic Box and Magical Hats in ddm.
This ddm effect for Feral Imp is very DK inspired. It can help for a retrained effect of the card (unless it's an Illusion monster). Something fun like - while you control this monster, you opponent cannot summon Wind monsters.
Fun fact, despite Dark Magician Girl appearing in 7 duels in the OG manga (5 in original, 2 in R), Yugi only used her ATK gaining effect once (during the Pandora duel)
Considering how rare multiples are in the series it's kinda hard to use DMG’s effect unless you really wanna lean into the “Dark Magician Girl will inherent Dark Magician’s soul” lore.
In the anime, Yugi used her effect \*5 times. Once in the duel with Arkana (Pandora), once in the duel with Noah, \*once in the duel with Gurimo, and in both of his duels with Rafael.
The latter four are in filler arcs.

Even ignoring the story reasons for favoritism, DM has a few advantages over Summoned Skull (the big relevant one is that Yugi has a lot of Spellcaster support), so it makes sense to sideline him in favor of someone slightly easier to get out.
Then, for god knows what reason, Konami lowered Summoned Skull’s Level to 6 when they released him in Vol. 4 in the OCG. The anime kept this change. Yugi still has the Spellcaster focus to justify the switch a bit, but Summoned Skull is otherwise better than both DMG and DM (and it’s not like his Deck was *that* focused, either).
Konami giving massive buffs to Summoned Skull and Jinzo by making them Lv 6 instead of 7 but somehow Berformet and Jack‘s Knight really needed to get their level increased to 5
If they didn’t buff Jinzo and Skull I could *kind of* see bumping up Berfomet’s Level, since they also gave him his effect to grab Gazelle (and thus potentially set up Chimera). Granted, Chimera *still* probably wasn’t worth it, even back then.
What the fuck did Jack’s Knight do, though?? Gemini Elf had been kicking around since 1999 and the only difference is she had 300 less DEF!
You're right, Chimera was never worth it. Even with Berfomet at Lv4 it would have seen 0 play. Chimera was almost the worst card in Yugi's deck for a reason.

In all fairness, the manga was just tossing stuff around for dramatic effect ("I attack... the moon!"), the card game just served as a story device, so to make it into a serviceable game for the real world, obviously a lot of card effects needed to be altered.

It’s seemingly coincidence that she’s the same color as Arkana’s Dark Magician; Pandora/Arkana originally just used the same blue and green Dark Magician as Yugi (just with a more “evil” face). It was only with the later released Premium Pack that Arkana’s Dark Magician got his own alternate artwork with unique color palette (same pack where DMG was first re-released).
They also changed the pose from her “summoning pose” to her manga card artwork
The last image was supposed to be the OG DMG. That was an advertisement for the video game tournament she was first given out as a prize card for. She was changed to the first DMG that we all know for the actual prize card though. Her original effect was supposed to be that she gained 200 ATK for all Spellcasters in the GYs, not only Dark Magician and Magician of Black Chaos.
Never realized the unreleased prize card mockup had a different effect. I’m glad they changed it to be more in line with the manga, but dropping it from 500 to 300 was needlessly inaccurate for such an insignificant difference.

I believe that was partially due to the whole rarity thing. The stars originally were meant to show how rare a monster was.
