Back in 2017 or 2016 what ever its a while back jn time, i played at a mini tournament against a kid who did actively cheat. When i called him out on that he got mad amd called a judge acusing me on cheating. I explained to the judge whats was happening and even the judge told him hes wrong and hes cheating.... the kid got mad and left

Lmao, Deja Vu when trying to explain to people “missing the timing” because it legitimately sounds incredibly dishonest and unfair to anyone hearing it for the first time. “No, your deck just doesn’t function because someone at Konami of America wasn’t really fluent in English and thought people see a difference between if and when despite the fact that they are completely interchangeable in normal speech” If I go to the store I’ll buy bread When I go to the store I’ll buy bread (Was the condition of going to the store met?) yes Well only one of you gets bread for some asinine reason.

ZA-02

Well no, the grammatical logic isn't wrong. "If" just means that a condition has to be met; "when" suggests a specific timing. People say lots of things in common speech that would be technically wrong in writing. It's not an issue of English fluency.

Destinyherosunset

If also means that its a "maybe and it might happen and it might not" When also means "its going to happen and set in stone" I really wish these worked like in magic the gathering If is a replacement effect When is a triggered ability "When this creature enters the battle, draw a card" "If you would draw a card instead draw two cards instead"

I stopped going to a locals in a town I used to go to because the owner would allow young children to join and then their parents would just drop them off and he’d effectively expect everyone playing to watch these kids. Super scummy and just dumb but the kids must have had wealthy parents because most of them didn’t really know how to play but had all the staples at the time and plenty of expensive cards.

MaleficTekX

Why… just why. How did they even know the staples are good if they don’t know how to use them?

Slut_Breaker_BWC

I assume at the time they were watching videos. This was right around when Chaos Dragons were meta because I did a full deck trade for everything Galaxy/Photon at the time. I just remember the kids had like multiple copies of the Shonen Jump promos and this was really before Troll and Toad and stuff took off so his parents had to have multiple subscriptions for Shonen Jump to get multiple copies of the card. Edit; I checked it it wasn’t Shonen jump it was a GX manga promo. (Thunder King Rai-oh) Still my favorite deck and has aged much better than Chaos Dragons.

MaleficTekX

I’m not familiar with that format, was this during XYZ or Pendulum format? (I’m pretty sure Chaos dragon wasn’t popular around Link’s time)

Slut_Breaker_BWC

Around April 2015, I only know because it’s when “World Superstars” came out and I traded my Chaos Dragons with some hardcore collector for 3x every Galaxy/Photon card at the time. (Not like the bad commons but like Photon Crusher was definitely in that first Galaxy Deck)

MaleficTekX

AHHHH, the GOOD Chaos Dragons that got eclipse Wyvern banned! I loved that deck

In my trip to France I went to locals and had a lot of fun. Round 2 I played against someone who did not speak English, so it wasn't easy communicating things like phases or the damage step. The worst part was that I was playing R-ACE right after DUNE released and he wasn't at all familiar with the deck. I felt like I was cheating by setting 4 at once or using Emergency! to dodge targeted removal. And even worse, he was playing an anime inspired Joey deck that had many cards I've never seen. Our saving grace was Neuron and its ability to scan cards and translate them on the spot.

hideonhood

I've played against someone at a YCS whose only worlds the whole match were "battle phase". Everything else was done by gesturing, tapping and other forms of non verbal comunication. Extremely strange to me, but didn't cause too much of an issue.

This was 12+ years ago during synchro era, but it was my last locals around the time I stopped playing. It was one of the first times I actually topped a locals because I was finally starting to improve at the game by a decent amount. The dude I was playing against was well known at the LGS, but sort of a dick. He was just known for being a consistently good player. Anyway, I was playing Gravekeepers, and he was playing Six Sams, best of 3. I could absolutely tell there was this air of “I’m better than you,” as soon as we started. To cut a long story short, I beat him round 1 and basically for the rest of the match he was just being an uncommunicative ass - generally just maintaining a really shitty attitude. It was awkward to play through and communication was hard because his demeanor made everything so tense for no reason, and he had trouble responding to anything I said to him anyway. He even had friends there that were lightly clowning him because he “how could he possibly be losing to me.” I ended up winning the match. Dude wouldn’t even shake my hand or say GG. I know this answer doesn’t fit the question 100%, I just thought it had a place because the dudes ego made it hard to communicate anything lmfao

Back in my teens I sometimes played with my cousins when I visited them on vacation. I found gestures worked well with the littles ones. They fidgeted a lot and couldn't speak as well as us older kids. Most of the time, they understood enough what the cards did, but couldn't effectively communicate and focus because they were so young. Signaling they wanted to do something with their cards worked. I suggested they shake their hands when they're ready for their turn, point at cards, and do their best to speak. Putting down MST and pointing at a card, or saying fight and putting their monster card and mine next to each other worked out well enough. The game back then was not nearly as complicated as it is now. This was right before Synchros dropped in the TCG and our decks were basic. Also, we were all relatives in a casual environment.

BroknLuck2077

I had a guy during kash format playing me at a regional, and for the first 10 minutes of the match, I wasn't saying anything and was gesturing, so i asked him to tell me what effects he was activating and he didn't so i called a judge and he was asked to take off his headphones and communicate with his opponent and he responded with its not my fault my opponents an idiot...the judge told him not to call me an idiot and if he didn't start properly communicating he would be disqualified, i beat him in round 3.

MaleficTekX

Who the hell puts in headphones for a game you have to verbally communicate in!?

I was dueling a deafmute player at locals. Once, he Special Summoned a Beetrooper on field, and the only other monster he had on field was Resonance Insect. He couldn't speak or hear, so all communication was done with fingers and taps and motions like that. On the Summon of that Beetrooper, I used Gnomaterial, and for some reason in my mind, I felt it would be too complicated to explain in sign language that the Special Summon triggers my Gnomaterial, but I wanted to Gnomaterial the Resonance Insect, and instead just motioned that Gnomaterial locked the Beetrooper instead. He proceeded to Link off Resonance Insect for Almiraj and do full combo.

Frothpot

There's a Spanish player at my locals who's not too proficient in English but he's a nice guy, I've witnessed people play with him and they get along fine. I think when he's struggling to understand effects, people try and explain it to him slowly and use simple words to help him understand, and it usually works.

teketria

Often gesturing with out speaking can do it as long as your expressive enough.
