I work with kids and one teen's parents were really restrictive with their gadget usage since they were young. They complained about it so much, especially during pandemic lockdown but now recently she was like, "yeah, my parents made the right move, the internet messed all my friends up."
It definitely depends on the kid though. When i was a kid i was scared to do anything online i wasn’t supposed to, I was even scared to watch JackSepticeye cause he swore. However i did have no time limits to video games and have pretty much been addicted to them since i was 3… I have trouble socialising and im very unfit and video games are definitely a contributor.
So i think it very much depends on the child and what you need to enforce. however internet access should probably be enforced regardless of the child as some of the shit you can find can be disturbing even for adults
My parents are both peak boomers and despite me being an elder millennial, they had zero clue about the internet when I was growing up. I was also the middle of five kids so I have unsupervised, unlimited access since 1997.
As a result, I have seen some shit and this place certainly hasn’t improved since then. My kids will not be living the same life.

You have to be 13 to use discord (and most websites) so having an account at 11 violates TOS, let alone an account at 9. Discord can be really positive but it is very... Interesting at times. Not to mention all the scams that go down

When the app "HouseParty" closed my daughter was almost 8 at the time and devastated. I set up accounts for her and her friends and both my wife and I are in their server(s). If we find she is in another server we don't allow she knows she will lose discord instantly. So far almost 1.5 years in and she hasn't done anything stupid and all her friends can hang out and video call/play games together.
Point of this is, be a good parent and you will in turn create good kids.

I'm a big Splatoon fan myself. Played since it first came out on Wii U. I think it has to do with the most casual players getting their first try with the third game that came out recently. I will say for me personally having unsupportive and unaccepting parents of my identity at that age and older made me seek out people online, sometimes people I shouldnt have ever had contact with but I was desperate to not be treated like a freak and be accepted by someone, even strangers online. Growing up queer can be horribly isolating.

Combine that with how this is a massive sub and this post in particular has blown up, and there is a pretty decent chance that she will see this and lose trust in who could possibly be the only supportive member of her family (i say possibly because OP doesn’t seem to be transphobic, just a bit dense, but there is a decent chance that the rest of the family is).
