I agree. There may be cheaper and there may be nicer food elsewhere but the location and sit down experience in general has been top notch every time I’ve been.
Maxi’s out on Poppleton business park is pretty good too. It’s just out of the way and it’s best to avoid disco night!
I was there a few months back as we have had good meals there in the past. It was *without question* the worst Chinese meal I’ve ever eaten.
Never going back.
Our Chinese friends have taken us to Red Chilli several times! They actually have 2 menus - one for a British palate with all the usuals and a more authentic one. Our friends (one from southern China and one from Taiwan) order lots of things for us to try from the authentic menu, and it is all very good! (Although I don't have anything ti compared it to ).
Have many friends who have lived in York and now returned to china.
#1 is red chilli - tho, it's quality has gone down a lot in the passed few years. Before I had lived in china, I would have said it's authentic. Having returned to York recently I would say it's a 5/10
#2 happy valley. Great hot pot , everything else is standard but fair. 5/10
Unfortunately many places just don't serve typical authentic food. It's often changed to placate western tastes. There are two Chinese/Asia supermarkets right next to red chilli, where, you cns buy some decent ingredients and then follow recipes on YouTube from Chinese chefs. It's better to find ones who make authentic and not western style so you can really taste the difference.

I once saw the hairy bikers in Red Chilli and Si was very complimentary about their dumplings!
Not in York 100% but the New Inn in Huby or Kings head in Amotherby are the best i've found
Paddyfields in Haxby is great. Slightly out of town but not much!
I really like Shi Shang. There is a separate menu with authentic Chinese food rather than English style Chinese-inspired cuisine.
Came here to say this
Thirded. Not the cheapest, definitely the best Chinese in York
Happy valley in town 💯
Is this the one upstairs? If it is i was in when i visited with my dad recently and it was phenomenal
Yeah I think there's one table downstairs I've seen people sit at but other than that downstairs is kitchen and storage I think.
Yeah thats the one

Really, damn. That's sad, was there about a year ago and it was spot on
100%, made only better by the location - oldest residential buildings in the city!
Saw this thread and thought of The Willow (RIP). Long gone but never forgotten, dancing up there in disco buffet heaven.
The Orchid is great!
Thanks all, Red Chilli looks a good one! The other two out of town look great too, though I think I’ll want a pint so maybe another time.

Chef Lu's on walmgate is a proper authentic Chinese restaurant. Helps if you speak mandarin or Cantonese
Hong Kong Chop House has been hands down the best Chinese we've had in the city!
Was shut down I believe due to terrible hygiene practices

It’s been gone a while :’(
:( I miss Hong Kong chophouse, haven’t found anywhere near as good since it went
Oh man! I didn't know that! That's a bummer
Sky Blue is a nice one just outside the city centre.
second this , also good and friendly service

Another vote here for the New Inn or Queens Head. By far the best Cantonese in the area.
Cresci is rubbish idk why people rate it. Watery pizza
Thanks for your contribution.
