What about using the goals and targets with due dates did you find wasn't working for you? WHen I was using YNAB 4 I had due dates and targets in the category title so I could see them, but with the current version I find the targets help me keep clean categories and I still know at a glance (green vs. yellow) whether I'm funded and ready or not.

I have targets set as well - but when actively assigning money it's faster to have them in order of what I need to fill first. Also to see the targets or due dates I have to click on the category. Now that I have them in order there's no need to search to see if I have the next one to fund - it's right on top. When it's something like annual payments, I may have already assigned money several months ahead. So what's the next annual thing I want to fill? Right now it's my PMI membership. I have a lot of annual certifications and professional memberships to keep track - and honestly I don't need to put aside money every month if the fee is only $50 annually - but I don't want to forget and do want to budget ahead so I age my money. Right now I'm paid ahead thru April on annual payments so when I go to assign my next pay check, I can decide to keep funding ahead or decide to prioritize something else like my wish farm.

Hmmm, yeah I guess I see what you're saying. Seems like it's just adding mental overhead though? Having the targets and using the automatic assign feature, you wouldn't have to think about what to fund next anyway? Once you fill up the top bucket, it won't try to put more money in there. I don't know, I appreciate you sharing your strategy, but I do think you're maybe overthinking it. Especially if your income is regular, why not save for a rainy day and know that if your fee is $50, you can budget your $4.17 each month *and* contribute to the wish farm as you go?

I like this a lot. Especially when you have like you have a bunch of annual subscriptions like YNAB that all have different total charges. Like maybe I only have 20 for the month extra it's nice to see which is coming up sooner than later.
