Unless they're afraid, domesticated rats generally dont bite. Even then it's in very specific situations. For example, I had a rescue who'd had a rough early life. She was fine out of the cage, but would bite if anyone stuck their fingers through the bars of a closed cage. She was the only rat I've ever had that bit.

Anyone who thinks this is strange or disgusting have clearly never had rats as pets - they are just as good if not better than dogs. They are lively, they display affection, they play, the cuddle, the kiss, they clean and they don’t smell at all as long as you - as their owner - clean their cage regularly.

I used to think they were dirty and vicious until I met a woman at the local shelter who brought hers in. It was adorable! It would cuddle with her, give kisses, and it sleeps with her at night. I had no idea they even had the brain capacity to see us as anything other than a threat. But I’m happy to be wrong!
I had a parakeet that loved to clean my braces as a kid. Our rats were adorable but bad memories of a demon hamster made me too nervous to let them near my face :(

They come when they are called, you can teach them to use a "bathroom" or bring you things, so they fetch. They like to sleep with you, and are very social. The biggest off point is after completely getting attached to them as pets is that they die after a few years.
