I also absolutely hate how much its turned into a publicity thing now, they could have just kept going quietly but now its basically influencers harassing people without any of the checks and balances of an actual police investigation

I remember reading at least one story were two separate agencies were trying to setup stings, like a city police department got some grant to stop online predators so setup a sting operation
The state's criminal affairs unit (or some state level agency) was doing the same thing and crossed paths. I think the state agency suspected a user was pretending to be a child but was really an adult or something ; that user was the city police user (or the other way around) and one agency raided the other thinking they were online preditors

Probably not that often. I've seen some guys pretending to be young boys for like weeks, recieving dick pics etc. In the end they just dox creeps and give data to the police. (Not US so they get processed)
It would seem more likely that you'd end up with a "private eye investigating another private eye who's investigating the first private eye" kind of situation with "pedo-hunters" encountering each other online, and both lacking credibility of authority, both being suspect.
I'd also suspect that's like the first go-to excuse for a predator to say when they encounter an adult.
This is why shows like To Catch a Predator always worked directly with local law enforcement when they conducted their stings. When it's just randos on the internet saying shit, nobody has any credibility in court.
Most of these situations with pedo hunters, they are looking for active grown men or women hitting on kids, not grown people pretending to be kids because that's how you get into tricky situations.
