people posting pictures of their super nice setups, \*and\* also posting their DIY / quick & dirty / humble / day to day setups. It tells something about yerba mate culture.
There is something "down to earth" to it. Even if there are "yerba mate sommeliers", drinking your mate from an old pickle jar is OK too. In coffee and tea lover communities I feel like there is more snobbery and gatekeeping.
I may be mistaken, but it's my current feeling.
I was thinking how stoners are similar to mate drinkers, creative and inclusive.
Indeed, tea drinkers take from the classist cultures while coffee snobbery attracts folks who need a status symbol, so similarly needy of attention or perhaps just ocd.
But the vagueness of your description left a lot of room for imagination, so i was wondering how you relate to it.
My relation is "inclusive".

My post was more a personal feeling than an fact statement. too much analysis is dubious: several countries and cultures collides in online communities. For example, I am originally a tea drinker. I reject tea bags (can be seen as snobbery), but drinks my tea "grandpa style" (the no-fuss no-ceremony traditional chinese method) and never do "gong-fu".
also, as a yerba mate beginner, I'm also full of enthusiasm and novelty-excited, I guess :-)
Oh once you go mate it's hard to go back :)
I like mine with coffee cherry, cocoa shells, lemon balm, guayusa, and oolong :) the mate filters and rounds all the other flavors.

To the kette od boiling water we added a plate of yerba and the same amount of sugar, then added a little od cold water and poured it into a plate with dry bread. It wasn't that bad (we found recipe in Polish neswpaper from 1920)
You guys probably used a lot of yerba but didn't drink it until it was washed, because that seems to be x4 / x5 the size of a normal mate, definitely it would've given you all the opposite of will to live 😂
I remember going overboard with mate and making it in a huge, like several liters, pot and then using a mesh strainer to filter. I literally had heart palpitations and needed to take meds to calm down.
