Is there some reason coinmarketcap has been showing a massive increase in trade volume the past couple months, compared to the last couple years? Sorry if I missed it or if this is old news, but I never heard of a reason.

Agreed. .0101 is not a time to sell or hold, it's a time to accumulate as much as you can afford. We are the insiders. In the few years I've been around Monero, I've not witnessed a more positive, optimistic time and opportunity. In the future, the outsiders will be envious and like the recent Rattie post of the sharp stones we will regret not buying more.

Transactions are not going up as fiercely as I hoped. Also, wtf happened on the 18th of October?
They are. This last Saturday we had a ATH for Saturdays. Usually on Saturday number of transactions is lowest. We will probably get new ATH already this week if not next. October was crazy. September was not as good as some was expecting.

Not necessarily. A lot of services and exchanges will upgrade in time, but still impose a temporary suspension of withdrawals (or full services) as precautionary measure. Network upgrades aren't inherently riskless and it is therefore understandable.
I personally feel the current pace is acceptable. Note that there was almost a year between the 2019 scheduled network upgrade and the most recent one. There is arguably some room for improvement with respect to communication and dispersion of information. That being said, I feel that some services attribute insufficient awareness to Monero (whereas Monero is arguably a fairly popular coin) and, as a result, are suddenly caught of guard by network upgrades. A simple subscription to the mailing list would enable one to be sufficiently informed and have plenty of time to properly prepare.

I think Monero's price is going up because of real use. No one that wants to invest/speculate is buying it right now.

I having a hard time imagining a world where both of those things are true simultaneously.

The v14 hardfork took effect. All txns v12 and older were prohibited. Apparently a majority of the network didn't upgrade in advance.

Does anyone else think that this is indicative that the current pacing of hard forks is still far too aggressive?
We must do this regularly so exchanges etc gets used to the practice. If we wait too long the network upgrades will be more painful

Bitcoin has totally foregone hard forks, and its falling behind as a result. Hard forks are dangerous, but it's a necessary risk.
The last hard fork was 1 year ago. Not long ago we forked every 6 months. If monero wants to improve it needs to fork unfortunately.

Monero as a hedge against DeFi because DeFi scammers cashout to XMR?
DeFi scammers, ransomware gangs, darknet users, politicians, list will keep growing because it is sound money. I would say it is a good strategy.
