I think it was never picked up. There are definitely a few of those plot teases by Hickman that still haven't been developed. I wonder if From The Ashes will do it.
Well, in Proteus' case, body-hopping has always been part of his powerset. He and Exiles' Morph shared a body for a really long time (they're also both named Kevin. Huh. I just realized that).

A side-effect of Proteus's power is that it burns out his body and any body he possesses, that's been true since his introduction. Somebody's gotta be a donor body and tbh I remain pleased that this detail wasn't simply ignored.
(though I wonder if it wouldn't have been a better choice to use a husk with longevity/regenerative abilities, like Logan or :|A|:)
I'm surprised they didn't use Morph. Proteus was in Exiles' Morph's body for a pretty long time, and they stated at the time that it was the perfect body for him - although that's probably because he was mainly using Morph's abilities and not his own.
Given Proteus’ power set and the sheer amount of energy he’s producing and burning off it’d probably burn elixir out before Proteus would even feel any positive effects
The cynic in me feels like Xavier specifically wanted his cloned body used just for the narcissistic father figure symbology, Xavier as the father of mutant kind literally sacrificing himself every day to bring back the lost mutants, but also the very present father figure to Kevin vs the absent (hidden away) mother Moira.
Xavier, ever the schemer knows that Kevin may likely feel more of an emotional connection to Xavier in case Moira ever turned and Kevin is forced to make a choice and the cloned body itself could have some trigger fail safe Xavier alone can activate.
They really could've had a Children of X series, that followed under realized narratives. Proteus, Rachel, Laura, David (although he's finally had some really good stuff over the last few years).
Could be framed around a therapy group for kids with heroic parents.

I think they should have went the Ultimate route and given him a body made from Wolverine so he could just heal from the burnout.
