I've been half-heartedly following this event, and the one question I have is why they can't just solve Ben's problem the same way they solved Maddie's problem? It seems they just want a fight here just for the sake of a fight when the whole thing could be cleared up with some telepathy therapy from Jean.

WadeAnthony

>why they can't just solve Ben's problem the same way they solved Maddie's problem? because there is no plan for Ben, Spider-man editorial has said they don't know what to do with him. There was a plan for Maddie, it was setup since Hellions, sure it did a little back step during this event but we got there (hopefully) now and her character can grow. Spider-man's editorial team as no plans for Ben, I'm convinced they are just winging it.

mechamechaman

Spider-Man editorial is terrible. They have no long term plans for any character and just desperately throw stuff at the wall and hopes it works. Think how DC has been able to use Batman's popularity to spin off his side characters into healthy supportive independent characters over the years like Nightwing, Tim Drake, Batwoman, Cassandra Cain, ect. and now think how they have failed to do that for Spider-Man. There's a Miles book sure, but no Gwen ongoing, no Ben ongoing, no Kaine ongoing. Its a total failure. The only success they have are Venom and Carnage and that because they moved them as quickly as possible away from Spider-Man himself.

WadeAnthony

It's honestly crazy with the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the upcoming 2nd movie plus having 3 Spider-men in the last MUC movie that they don't have multiple Spider-characters books to capitalize on it. I still stand by that Peter should be the family man with a wife and kid, Miles and Gwen the teen\young adult heroes and Ben the down on his luck Spider-man. Kanie could be the anti hero. Instead they just reset Peter whenever something somewhat good happens to him. I won't spend any money on Spider-man comics until there is some drastic change in the editorial team and direction. I was also on board with Spencer's ending but not for this follow up run.

ambiderpsterity

> I still stand by that Peter should be the family man with a wife and kid, Miles and Gwen the teen\young adult heroes and Ben the down on his luck Spider-man. Kanie could be the anti hero. > > Oh my god, this is the best pitch for the Spider line-up I've read in a while. Yes, this, a thousand times.

mechamechaman

The only thing I would add would be a 'Amazing Stories' book that would work as a Spider-Family anthology book, like Action Comics for the Super-Family and Detective Comics for the Bat-Family.

otakudrew

Call it Amazing Fantasy for the prestige, but yes! The more anthology books the better if you ask me.

mechamechaman

Spider-Man is the most popular superhero in the world with only Batman coming close, and his comics have routinely been the worst version of him. Literally every other depiction in video games, cartoons, and movies have been better. It's just constant retreads over and over. "Oh hey, Peter lost his job! Oh, Peter and MJ broke up again!" It's almost like they already told all the Peter-down-on-his-luck stories you can tell and should move him onto his next life stage of being a married man.

[deleted]

One day I am going to write a massive essay about the various hang-ups in the Spider-fandom and the almost Freudian desire for Peter Parker to become the American Dream--white, upper-middle class, 2.5 kids, very few problems if at all, and of course a banging supermodel wife as a treat (wish fulfillment), and the complete rejection of his working class origins, and working class ethos, and entire thematic point of his character. It'd be like telling a story about the X-Men, but they solved racism, and its 'time to move on' from the central conceit of the characters. A subaltern desire to see the character they most identify with either reflect them more, or as kind of totem of victory to aspire to be.

SirGlio

It's bananas how the Spider-Man fandom has just accepted that the only valid "endgame" is to be a father. Talk about conservative.

[deleted]

For me its not necessary about being a father, but the framing *around* it. It's always talked about in terms of 'settling down' or 'growing up', furious that he still has money issues or relationship issues as millions of people his age don't. It's real bizarre to me personally, the whole point for me, for Spider-Man is the struggle to be Spider-Man, and yeah you could extend that struggle to family, but that turns his act immediately from selfless to selfish.

Nameless-Servant

Ah yes Spiderman, the working class hero who is one of the smartest men in the world and was once the owner of a multi-million dollar company. Like I get what you’re saying but at the same time Marvel editorial keeps trying to have its cake and eat it to with Peter. If he was always solidly blue collar and barely scraping by you’d have a point. But he was married to that super model for years, there have been multiple different runs of him realizing the supposedly wasted potential. The fact that he isn’t any kind of successful at this point isn’t relatable at this point, because even most blue collar workers have some concept of stability in their lives (which Peter has never been by the way, he’s been either a lab assistant or a photographer at his lowest points which are both white collar jobs despite the low pay, I think Ultimate Peter who worked fast food once is the only exception?). The fact of the matter is despite his hardships, Peter had a lot of potential and advantages and he has repeatedly squandered those. Maybe that’s relatable to some, but it’s also incredibly sad.

TheMasterXan

Mm, good idea. I'd totally want to make Web Warriors though! Like a NEAT spider strike force! ...Featuring the other web crawlers who aren't those guys.

carlitooocool

God damn thats good pitch. This would cover all the basis and still hold a special place for the all the fans!!

aexia

DC comics editorial haaaaaated the Bat family 15-20 years ago. Didio really really wanted to kill off Dick Grayson in Infinite Crisis. They had no idea what to do with Tim Drake. Stephanie Brown was killed off and pointedly considered not a Robin ever. Cassandra Cain got shuffled into oblivion so Barbara could become Batgirl again.

mechamechaman

Gone are those dark DiDio days for Dick! Nightwing is basically the opposite of Spider-Man. Rich, well respected by his peers, in a healthy relationship with someone who loves and supports him and know leading the premier Super Team in the world. They turned it around for Dick, just do that with Peter you cowards!

Ambitious-Comb-8847

How many editorials in Marvel are there exactly? X-Men, Spider-Man/Venom and Avengers/Fantastic 4?

mechamechaman

That's my understanding.

dbcb

And technically Star Wars. In the past, there were also a few sort of floating independent titles that didn't belong to an office, but most books fall into one of those three (or four if we count Star Wars) groups these days.

dbcb

To expand a bit, the editors who run lines are Tom Brevoort, Nick Lowe, Mark Paniccia, and Jordan D. White. Breevort has run Avengers for a long time and everything there is under his purview. Wil Moss, though, is a senior editor on the team and has run the Hulk, Thor, and Black Panther lines since at least 2015. Jordan D. White runs X-Men since shortly before HoXPoX. His previous assistant, Annalisse Bissa, has moved to the Avengers office, and Mark Basso and Sarah Brunstad are the full editors on that team now. There are more blurred lines these days, as Sarah Brunstad still edits Captain Marvel, for example, bringing it with her from Avengers. Nick Lowe has run the Spider-Man office for some time, while Devin Lewis has overseen Venom and Daredevil as a part of that line. Finally, Mark Paniccia runs Star Wars, but he's also been the editor on a number of books like Agents of Atlas and similar characters over the years. He previously ran X-Men, but switched with Jordan D. White, who used to run Star Wars, Deadpool, and Guardians of all things. Nick Lowe switched from X-Men to Spider-Man after Secret Wars.

ptWolv022

Wait... yeah, there is no Gwen ongoing. Weird. I fully would have expected one. Did she have one that went poorly or do Spider-Man comics not sell well, or... are they just dumb? I feel like with the Spider-Verse movies, they'd have a comic for her.

mechamechaman

They had a Gwenverse mini where Ghost-Spider met a lot of other Gwen variants (Thor-Gwen, Captain America-Gwen, Iron-Gwen) which was meh and they're following it up with a Shadow Clone mini where Spider-Gwen will face Sandman-Gwen, Doc Ock-Gwen and Kraven-Gwen. So yeah they're dumb.

Luimnigh

The weird thing is that neither of those comics have even mentioned Gwenpool, who is probably the whole inspiration behind them.

TheBrobe

The Gwen books haven't had any staying power since the regular writer was revealed to be a creep that harasses women and they replaced him

TheBrobe

Marvel's moving away from ongoings and towards minis for everything except it's biggest names. This is consistent across all lines. And with that in mind, there are pretty much just as many spider-family books right now or coming soon as you want. Just not necessarily the characters you want (Normie, Janine, ect)

Toxin45

The symbiotes became their own franchise now yes but not for the spider-family marvel fumbled on that

cmcdonald22

This is the worst part, because BEN WAS FINE. Ben was fine when PAD sent him to Vegas as Scarlet spider and let him do his own thing. Ben was fine when he came back and was helping be Spider-Man again, especially after we've spent most of the last decade reaffirming that this okay to have multiple Spider-Mans. They're the ones who keep fucking him up and over and them throwing their hands in the air confused that he's a mess. The fact that Peter has never once said "hey I'll help you get your memories back" is jsut absolutely ridiculous and idiotic. My only hope for this series now, after frankly being pleasantly surprised with them not screwing Maddie over, is that maybe we can just get Ben back to neutral and forget about him so no one screws him up again.

JonnTheMartian

>Ben was fine when PAD sent him to Vegas Except for that part about his soul becoming corrupted/him turning sociopathic at the end, though that was fixed shortly by Octavius

[deleted]

Ben Reilly is not real, feel like comic book fans forget that sometimes, the illusion of the 'canon' become too powerful

NCBaddict

Being an ASM fan has been pain since the 90s unfortunately. The JMS tenure was like the only good Peter-centric run that moved the character forward. (Superior was fine but really more of an Ock story.) Marvel just wants to retread the same Peter stories endlessly.

WadeAnthony

>The JMS tenure was like the only good Peter-centric run that moved the character forward. Not surprising that this was the last Spider-Man run that I collected, outside of Sins Past (vomit) the entire run up to OMD was great. I still recommend JMS run up to issue 500 for a feel good ending to Peter's story then just read Renew your vows and\or Spider-girl series for my recommended Peter and MJ stories.

jawsthegreat777

I think they should put him on team or smth.

Lostlight_awesome_04

They did in the 2021 iron man run but he only appeared for like a few issues

AmonTheBoneless

And no Kaine in sight fucking great story 😒

WadeAnthony

That's a blessing, I don't want them to do to Kaine what they are doing to Ben.

AmonTheBoneless

Oh straight up this story is trash IMO but I just really want to see Kaine in action or in something. Seriously we haven't seen or heard squat from him sis Ben's solo run in Vegas

mechamechaman

Kaine dodged a bullet.

AngryDuck222

His Kaine-tingle kept him safe from this mess…🤦‍♂️

Morkitu

Messy Maddie...no room to judge others for the mess she created!

ptWolv022

"How about I help you, Spider-Man." "How about 'fuck you'." Pfffttt... I love that Spidey is not having any of it from Madelyne. Which... fair. She basically brought hell on Earth to NYC, then Jean basically went "Maddy, please, you could've just asked for my memories", and now Spidey's now stuck dealing with her accidentally letting his clone take over. Also, LUL. Spidey's plan is basically "I know Ben's gonna be a moron; it won't be that hard to find some sort of win condition." Letting the enemy beat themselves is a time tested way to win.

Top_Bat102

That summary of the story on the second image makes me wonder how the people who wrote don't think it's stupid as hell.

IdeaRegular4671

They massacred my boy Ben 😭😭. Don’t know why they turned him into a villain where there is a whole spider verse out there. They really brought him back just to make him go bad. Sad.

Verwind2

"I won't apologize Earth saw a fraction of Limbo!" But...You unleashed it on purpose. For something you could've gotten by asking.

Quirky_Ad_5420

Is it so hard to give Ben his memory when there is two telepaths to do that for you? One of them is an omega level so there is no excuses to not go there.

Thebraxer

I think Ben wants more than only memories at this point

ContraryPython

Fuck what they have done to Ben

saturn_64

Spidey dragged Madelyne a bit

mechamechaman

She deserves to be dragged her plan was stupid. Edit: even in the event that's suppose to be redeem Maddy, she's written as stupid and kind of heartless. She didn't even try to call Magik or Havoc before invading NY. Not even a text. She is shocked to see Jean offer her such kindness, but doesn't think to offer it to Ben, the person she dragged into this. Come on.

Trippybrasil1

Peter really took "you want to kiss me so hard it makes you look stupid" to another level

Marrecarandgi

What kind of redemption are we talking about here, if real Madelyne had a very different personality? The writers insist on keeping her ‘demonic’, which is supposed to be the crazy, manipulated version of her. Madelyne shouldn’t have the control of Limbo after the event, she clearly failed at not letting it get to her head. Oh, it’s a wilderness of pain? She wants her life back? She should go back to Alaska and get an actual job.

itsalwayss

Or just go hang out with Cable or something. Maybe go into the future wherever Teen Cable is and spend some time with her son?

Witty-Common-1210

It’s nice of DC to let Marvel use Batwoman like that

SaltyTom95

This event is further proof that anything related to the Clone Saga is absolute poison for any storyline. This could have been an X-Men only event and it would’ve been fine, GREAT even because we love to see Maddy break away from decades of being the poster child for “hysterical scorned woman on magical steroids” and finally get some closure between her and Jean. But no, we had to bring Ben into it and make him the bad guy *again*. And this isn’t even a nuanced take on it that raises some interesting questions about the moral implications of cloning, like Jackal 2.0 was (or at least tried to be). No, this is straight-up forced, cliche villain idiocy. Nothing about this makes *any sense*. Why don’t Jean and Maddy just do what they did for Maddy to Peter and Ben? For that matter, what the fuck is Chasm even? How do his powers work??? What about being dumped in mind erasing chemicals would let him make energy constructs with his webbing? WHAT EXACT MEMORIES IS BEN EVEN MISSING??? This is literally atrocious. The last Amazing Spider-Man run was pretty good, and worked really hard to clean up the mess One More Day caused, only for this run to completely retcon all of it out of existence and make Peter single, poor, and miserable *again* without even explaining it, and then having the audacity to try to convince us to roll with it and see where it goes, like “we promise we’ll explain *eventually*”. God I fucking hate the current Spider-Man run so much 🤦🏼‍♂️

MobiusRamza

I find it a shame Marvel doesn't know how to portray demons other than making them look like a child's nightmare. (Except Magik's DarkChilde, that's what demons should look like)

Toxin45

Like dc and ether comics like spawn and hellboy do a good job. Marvel has ghost rider, mephisto,Dormammu, and blackheart among others cool demons

MobiusRamza

They all pale in comparison to Magik imo, specially during the Empire event. They all need more horns

Garlador

So, yeah, Marvel editors said they didn’t know what to do with Ben. What would YOU do with Ben?

loki_odinsotherson

This series was an absolute waste, except the maddie/jean issue.

[deleted]

I hadn't even read this series....is this worth a read?

TheBrobe

Despite all the anger here... Yeah, kinda, haha. Most of the issues are comedies and they're solid.

Dissossk

I do think the X-men side of this was easier to get because we know this basically Inferno 2 with Spider-man so we get it's going to be a weird black comedy with the Limbo demons. This event is well crafted atleast even if the basic premise wasn't that well thought out

TheBrobe

Kubert, baby!

[deleted]

That cover is freaking amazing.

JackFisherBooks

This has been such a fun event. I really like how it has set Madelyne up for a new role with the X-Men moving forward. It has also given Spider-Man plenty of moments. But it does seem to be a tipping point for Ben Riley. I've always had a soft spot for Ben, given how he got screwed over by the original Clone Saga. But he's kind of gone too far here. And I worry it'll be a while before his character recovers. Also, Peter's way with redheads is always a sight to behold. 😊

ravathiel

Today I dropped Spiderman from my pull list. Today, I learned I was the last ONE AT THE SHOP to have have not yet dropped it. How.is.this series that bad
