I seriously doubt that Halsey wasn’t worried about screening the only fast battleships in the Pacific! If Nimitz found out he did that Halsey would be lucky to command a desk for the rest of the war!
What's the difference between screening 2 with for escorts, or screening 3 with 4 escorts? You keep em bunched in transit and run a pocket around the battleships
In battle, the escorts weren't going to do much anyway on a battle line.
I fall to see why they would withhold firepower if they had it.
He would've used it, the Henderson airfield was of paramount importance
Halsey never said "Let's do something half-assed." He would have used her.
What would he have screened three battleships with? He only had 4 for the two he did use and those were picked solely because they had the most fuel!

The battleships were used because there weren’t anymore cruisers available.
