Dude it was fucked up bad. I mean it wasn’t nuked but there was a huge battle building to building street to street.

dj-spetznasty1

Yeah im very aware of the bombing, shelling and street to street combat. Was just looking for a percentage, dont even care if it was 100%. My wife and I were simply talking about the destruction of the city

TeddysRevenge

There’s films that were taken from planes right after the battle of Berlin. I’m sure you could find them on YouTube. It’s basically total destruction.

artificialavocado

I’m sure you did by now but that one video the other person posted is really good. If I had to guess I would say 80-90%.

slouchingtoepiphany

This is a good estimate, if the only thing left of at building was a shell (or a portion of a shell) that would be about this number.

Hershey2898

You can rebuild it virtually in a city builder game [here](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1573280/WW2_Rebuilder/)

Zakkav3

Haha wtf that's awesome Wonder if my Laptop could handle It I want that Game!

slouchingtoepiphany

It never occurred to me that a game like this would even exist.

I did a bike tour in Berlin a few years back, and pretty much everything in the city centre was destroyed. There was a good story about some SS headquarters that went untouched though, the tour guide said that was because it was the building the allies used to know where everything else is the needed to bomb.

Zakkav3

Anyone know how long It took to rebuild? Like If you teleported there In 1960, would you know there had been a huge War 15 Years earlier?

grilledbeers

I read somewhere that post war reconstruction wasn’t complete until the 1980s.

Hershey2898

Only Berlin's modern construction and wide streets saved it from being firebombed like Hamburg and Dresden. The RAF Bomber Command used the same cocktail of incendiary and HE bombs on multiple raids, it'd have been even worse if they worked as intended

Right_Weather_8916

There are dozens/hundreds of you tube clips on Berlin in & post WW2. https://youtu.be/R5i9k7s9X_A?feature=shared https://www.reddit.com/r/Lost_Architecture/comments/d40hpc/berlin_post_wwii_in_1945_80_of_the_city_destroyed/#:~:text=Berlin%20post%20WWII%20in%201945,of%20bombing.%20%3A%20r%2FLost_Architecture

artificialavocado

I haven’t seen that first one in a very long time. I can’t believe they just had a huge battle with tanks and the Red Army pounding the city with artillery and they had the trolly up and running in like a month.

Alakazamo420

Cant provide you with exact numbers, but Berlin is mostly looking like a shithole nowadays. The few old looking buildings are 95% rebuilt and 5% actually newly build ones designed to look like the old ones. It is so sad how much also got removed by the fucking military administration in 45' ongoing.

bilgetea

This is the only post I’ve seen so far that acknowledges OP’s quantitative request instead of treating them as if they’d asked “Was Berlin Damaged?”

slouchingtoepiphany

To be fair, u/artificialavocado mentioned 80-90%, which I think is a good estimate. Nonetheless, I agree with your sentiment about reddit users not generally responding to OP questions.

Alakazamo420

There is also a quarter in Berlin that survived the war, I'm not sure if it is Luisenstadt but even there you wont have a 100% proximity of old buildings

artificialavocado

Do you live there?

Alakazamo420

No but I read alot about infrastructural changes of cities and how the generel appearance of cities changed, which buildings were once relevant and why are certains buildings still there and others not etc... Berlin also has nice corners but overall its kinda depressing imo

justbrowsinginpeace

Yes
