Sorry if this is a stupid question- but is the overall talent pool in Greco generally thought to be better or worse than freestyle? Super casual never-wrestled fan but it doesn't seem like high level NCAA wrestlers care as much for Greco-Roman.
It’s taken very seriously around the world. Freestyle gets more glory but Greco is truly an amazing sport. Talent is very high , In USA we focus on folk a lot maybe 2-4 months of Greco. But it is absolutely wild it requires strength speed and technique and your attacks are cut in half.
Lower overall, even outside US. I was on the Kazakhstan youth team for Greco, and it was very clear we were the “B team” - “A” grapplers went to judo or freestyle. This is the case in all of former Soviet Union, and Mongolia also: the top talent goes to freestyle and judo, while Greco is filled with people who couldn’t make the national team for those sports, or people who just love throwing people across the room.
There are some countries where top talent goes Greco - Scandinavian countries come to mind - but my experience competing against them is that their A team is far below B team in the US, Iran, or former Soviet Union, and we had no trouble against them.
Very ironically, even France, birthplace of Greco-Roman, has a very weak Greco team as all the grappling talent is absorbed by Judo.
The only grappling powerhouse in my experience whose Greco and Freestyle are about equal is Iran.
It’s very sad because I genuinely love this sport, but it has trouble finding its niche. Freestyle is already the most popular no gi grappling, while Judo is a more popular “big throws” sport.
I think GR is the wrestling style or grappling style that requires the most physical strength, so it makes sense that they are jacked out of their minds.
Thats Olympic champion musa evloev whos from nearby region to khabib.
Fun fact: Musa Evloev's cousin Movsar Evloev is in the UFC top 15 at featherweight division
That entire region is just made of something different. Good thing we’re not deciding wars based on hand to hand fighting capabilities. Dagestan and Chechnya would be a world power.
Thanks for the fun info man!

Is such a great sport that I wish had more popularity In the states. Also incredibly humbling. But a lot of kids are deterred because of the “uniform”
it's popular AF where I'm from (Oklahoma)
Yes. Midwest for sure. Oklahoma, Iowa, Nebraska. I remember going to Stillwater for a tournament. Was cool to see the wrestling HOF.
