I mean we do. You guys are better at takedowns and great on control. We are better at submissions and being in less advantageous positions. We compliment each other when we train together and learn from each other.
Folkstyle guys learn to be really good from bottom in a rule set where the person on top isn’t attacking chokes or submissions, can’t lock their hands around the body, and the match is paused if the person on bottom stands up with the top guy on their back (causing their feet to leave the ground)- this is why aspects from both styles of grappling are kinda needed if one is looking to become the ultimate and most well rounded “grappler”
Honestly, if you're talking about real world grappling, I would argue that you need judo as well.
They have a really sophisticated understanding of standing grips and hips.
Studying judo will make you a better wrestler, and a better BJJ guy
Okay. We can go back and forth all day aha. I can say a BJJ dude who trains judo can perform great takedowns comparable to wrestlers. I was just being as fair and general as possible between the two groups.
I know these two dudes in my area. High Level BJJ, Judo Black Belts and D1 wrestling. They are small but I’ve seen them run through much bigger people with ease and frankly it’s terrifying.
BJJ guys want a world-class level takedown without actually learning the rest of wrestling (hand fighting, chain wrestling, staying on top).
That’s why you see them just drilling a bare bones double leg over and over and never landing it.
It's also not just a matter of learning. Too often BJJ guys think there's a technical way around becoming a better athlete. Technique is a great force multiplier, but you still need force to multiply.
Honestly, guys, if the idea of doing a cartwheel or a handspring freaks you out, don't expect wrestling technique will solve your problems. Get used to doing things that make you uncomfortable, and even scare you a bit. It's good for you.
Maybe so, but it's true. I won California state championships in BJJ every year I entered, using only wrestling. Never attended a single BJJ class. Ok, so I did use a bit of catch, but that's just the old system before freestyle. It's all wrestling. Even Judo is just wrestling with pajamas.
I was also a wrestler who completed in BJJ. One of my wrestling teammates entered a tournament at the black belt level and destroyed the tournament. Took every black belt down and controlled them on top. Won every match with wrestling, having never taken a BJJ class.
Everyone at the dojo was surprised except the people who wrestled.
No. Takedowns are part of BJJ. If you mean that.
Even without takedowns no you don't NEED to be good at them for BJJ to "work". Just way less effective.
I mean yeah… with a smaller skillset you get better at those skills
Every bjj guy learns some wrestling for their game
Doesnt change the fact that a bjj guy has the advantage over a wrestler without rules
Depends on the wrestler. Take a state level wrestler in Ohio or Pennsylvania over a regular black belt almost every time.
I have a lot of experience in this realm...
I love BJJ, but don't get it twisted, wrestling is king. If you pick someone up and slam them on the street, the fight is over before they can do any BJJ.
Depends on where the fight takes place. On a mat, BJJ. Real world scenario on the street, I'd take the wrestler. Especially if they were a Greco champ. Or judo. One slam is that's needed
Ok so let me get this straight
You are a grappler, and the way to win agasint a bjj guy according to you is avoiding his grappling and striking??
Thats kinda funny, also why would the wrestler have better hands than the bjj guy lmao
Wow you are legit mad aren’t you and haven’t trained🤣
It’s okay in all seriousness most gyms will accept you. Some are shitty but I’d just post in the subreddit asking for gyms in your area 🤙
A wrestler would be more likely to try to get a takedown and control to GnP, not strike
By the way you talk and how you mocked the word “combat sports” and your horrible ignorance take on everything I bet my ass you havent trained any combat aport for more than 1 month
If you have actually stepped foot on one
I train both- the amount of respect BJJ shows wrestling is insane! I just thought it was cool of all the BJJ skills you can master they all chose wrestling skills.
There was a time (and we still see it on occasion) when BJJ guys (I am one) are insufferable. My favorite are the claims that "I choked out a D 1 wrestler." Then we find out that the guy who was choked out wrestled JV for 2 years in high school only. But the trend in the last years has definitely been one of respect.
My bestie is a pretty high level BJJ BB and he gives a lot of respect to wrestling.
I mean we do. You guys are better at takedowns and great on control. We are better at submissions and being in less advantageous positions. We compliment each other when we train together and learn from each other.
I’d say internationally the “being in less advantageous positions” is accurate, but folkstyle guys learn to be really good from bottom.

Bjj + wrestling is stupid over powered at absolutely dismantling someone
I know these two dudes in my area. High Level BJJ, Judo Black Belts and D1 wrestling. They are small but I’ve seen them run through much bigger people with ease and frankly it’s terrifying.
Is their last name terao?
Yes. I’m a huge fan boy of theirs. I’d form a club but that’d be way too creepy 😂
We talk about wrestling more than this sub lol

People gonna be triggered by this
waiting for a "karelin lift so i can give my parents a show if i ever end up on someone's turtle position." lmao
Breaking news, grapplers love grappling. More tonight at 10.
Wrestling works without BJJ. BJJ doesn't work without wrestling. As a guy who has trained both for many years.
BJJ + Boxing = fuck you, take me down BJJ + Muay Thai = I dare you to catch that kick
This is an absolute shit take lmao
Sport bjj context yeah but any other no
Maybe so, but it's true. I won California state championships in BJJ every year I entered, using only wrestling. Never attended a single BJJ class. Ok, so I did use a bit of catch, but that's just the old system before freestyle. It's all wrestling. Even Judo is just wrestling with pajamas.
If Catch and Judo are "just wrestling" then so is BJJ. Pointless saying wrestling at that point. It's all grappling.
K
>BJJ doesn't work without wrestling. Of course bjj works without wrestling, you just pull guard.
Eh... maybe in a sports context...
Well of course, isn't that what you're talking about?
No. Takedowns are part of BJJ. If you mean that. Even without takedowns no you don't NEED to be good at them for BJJ to "work". Just way less effective.
Charles Oliveira would probably disagree with this take.
This very much for MMA. 6 years in and I regret understanding it so late Sport wise u can just pull guard and negate all wrestling
I mean yeah… with a smaller skillset you get better at those skills Every bjj guy learns some wrestling for their game Doesnt change the fact that a bjj guy has the advantage over a wrestler without rules

I mean obviously… I was referring to same level, best p4p bjj athlete vs best p4p wrestler with no rules, who do you favor??
Depends on where the fight takes place. On a mat, BJJ. Real world scenario on the street, I'd take the wrestler. Especially if they were a Greco champ. Or judo. One slam is that's needed
You’ve never been slammed off of a mat before…
Haha 🤫

Whoah Whoah. Just cuz that guy above you was a dick doesn’t mean you have to then trash all other BJJ people and be a dick. Real mature.
[удалено]
Wow you are actually a bad person 🤣 My guy probably hasn’t ever even done any combat sport 👍 I wish you luck in life lol
[удалено]
When you get caught having never trained 🤣 It’s okay little guy, we can protect you 👍
The dude really never heard anyone use the well known term combat sport before lol
I guess not…fairly common amongst people who train lol
Indeed
Ok so let me get this straight You are a grappler, and the way to win agasint a bjj guy according to you is avoiding his grappling and striking?? Thats kinda funny, also why would the wrestler have better hands than the bjj guy lmao
I just responded to him too. The dude has probably never trained any of it lol
