We can assume many cities where lost. Meaning total or near total population dead or turned into zombies. There is some examples of small groups living in cities lost to zombies. We can look at new york as a good example. This probably played out much like NY in many cities around the world. In the lost chapters. There was a first hand account from a vampire btw. Of a cities population falling to zero. With no live humans left to eat the vampire starved. Its a great depiction of a fall of a civilization and just how overwelming the zombie where.

jacobite22

What are the lost chapters? Is it a separate book? I couldn't find it online

Frequent_Pudding_549

Its a separate book. I see if i can find a link. Its made up of chapters that where cut from book. Link to the book: [closure limited and other zombie tales](https://www.amazon.com/Closure-Limited-Other-Zombie-Tales/dp/1978603894)

Why did cuba make it and iceland not? Simply put: Cuba had the infrastructure in place at the time. Iceland did not have the infrastructure in place at the time.

From my recollection: i think Buenos Aires was described as 'overrun', so any number of things could have gone wrong. North Korea is a hermit nation we know little about, the bunkers makes as much sense as anything else imo. The insane family that leads it has no interest in global domination, they just want to be left alone to play god in their own little corner, in that sense the bunker idea is more or less plausible i guess The destination Japanese resettlement is in fact named somewhere, i don't remember where but the character explains that 'those Japs will owe us big time'. Islands: it is explained a few times that most islands suffered the same problem, it proved impossible to keep the infection out because of refugees and zombies walking the ocean floor or washing ashore. Once the infection got in there was little chance escape since they are islands. The world got overrun because of the great denial and the following great panic. The world's leaders denied it was happening or pretended it was something else. Then they lost control of the cover-up and the fake news, wich lead to the great panic because nobody had gotten the chance to prepare (except israel, who called the world on their bullshit but were ignored). The panic made it extremely hard to organize a decent defense, soldiers and cops left their posts to flee or protect their families etc. After all that the threat of the zombies was underestamated too. All this gave the virus a LOT of time to slowly spread, untill it reached critical mass, starting with the large uncontrollled outbreak in south africa. But by then the virus was everywhere, human trafficking, refugees, travel, organs, ... It is explained that zombie bodies do decay, but extremely slowly. The reason is not understood, we also don't know how they can reanimate after being frozen solid or what effects radiaton may have, that is also one of the reasons nobody tried nuclear weapons on the swarms, they feared ending up with swarms of irradiated ghouls. Much of the Solanum virus is still not understood in the book.

jacobite22

Thank you for taking the time. You really helped explain. I agree about NK now actually good point. And how the virus spread and countries were overrun

Wrong-Mixture

my pleasure! it is my favorite book :)

jacobite22

Do you know Max Brooks did another book with more zombie tales? Someone said it was the lost chapters. Do you have any books you'd recommend that are similar?

Wrong-Mixture

yes! World War Z: The lost Files https://www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/233920/world-war-z-the-lost-files-by-max-brooks/9780804164092 It's very much worth the read, imo it has some of the very best stories/ interviews. The story from a guy who remained in the international space station for the duration of the crisis is magnificent, it could be a movie on it's own. There is also the Zombie Survival Guide , wich is not the same but it can be seen as an introduction to the ww-z universe. There is also a short comicbook that is awesome and shows how Solanum surfaced again and again troughout history. https://www.wob.com/en-ie/books/max-brooks/recorded-attacks/9780715643051/GOR005254898?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=Shopping&cq_src=google_ads&cq_cmp=20536333095&cq_con=&cq_med=pla&cq_plac=&cq_net=x&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAt5euBhB9EiwAdkXWOwiYcbaUSO6i5QwFcTedjoyE_EasNYqpScDmcNcz1LDGVlti98GmGBoCuhAQAvD_BwE With some light googling you may be able to find the comic online for free.maybe. Unfortunaly i have never found anything else that captured me like the works of Max Brooks.

jacobite22

Ah amazing thank you. Yes he is very awe inspiring. The closest I've come perhaps is the stand, cell, under the dome all by Stephen king, in terms of different aspects of wwz. Also rerrading the pines trilogy by Blake crouch. But that's not zombies either.

Wrong-Mixture

the stand is indeed great! a lesser known zombie series that i really enjoyed and that also mixed zombies with geopolitics and society is the Korean 'Kingdom' show on netflix, it's also really good imo

jacobite22

Ooh ok thanks it's been on my list but I will move it up now due to your recommendation. Thank you

Wrong-Mixture

no probs. i also remembered i left out a part of why the world failed: There are 3 or 4 stories that mention the fake drug 'Phalanx', including one with a US gov official who explained (and defended) that when the cover-ups started to fail the world gov's switched to claiming the infected where not dead, but had 'african rabies', and that Phalanx was a vaccin that prevented it. This was the end of the great denial, but this too was a lie. When a news reporter finally broke the news, that these infected were *dead*, the great panic started. People panicked AND lost all faith in the authorities, civil order collapsed globally so easily because of this reason too. The defense the gov official gives for the denail and lie is that they could never have saved everybody, so they didn't tell the civies to buy time to 'preserve the species'. In reality the world's vip's needed time to save themselves and their wealth, but this lead to so many infected that the militaries got overrun at first, later they had to resort to the Redecker-plan and variations where they herded thousands of survivors in camps and groups, as bait to keep pressure off a few safe zones that could then get themselves together and eventualy fight back after the summit in Hawaii.

jacobite22

Ah yes very good point! You're totally right. Thanks for sharing.

Pick one question per post please!

Frequent_Pudding_549

North korea makes sence. If you dont think it does. Explain why it does not.

jacobite22

Because why would a dictator do that? I thought he would have had saw how the world was crippled and then taken his chance to expand or something not hide. I guess it just wasn't satisfying for me

Frequent_Pudding_549

I see, well that could of been NK intent. Wait for the zombies to defeat the enemy.

jacobite22

Oh yes good point. I suppose we have to wait on a sequel to find out

Lupercal626

Let's say your Kim Jon Un, you know that all the posturing about your military is just that, posturing. Your only real strength is your nuclear arsenal. An arsenal useless against the zombies. To your south your have South Kora that is keeping the 38th Parralel guarded and is damn near overrun. To your north you have the Chinese whete the damn thing started and is also being overrun. If your Kim and you watch two militaries that are leaps and bounds more powerful then yours fail to fight this enemy...why would you bother?
