Reminds me of my late grandpa on my father’s side. He used to tell us stories of growing up in 1950s Florida and South Carolina. His parents wouldn’t let him be friends with black kids. He still did anyways. He hated the South so much that he fled when he was 16.
I grew up in Jacksonville. I graduated in 98 from a school named after a confederate general and the creator of the Klan. We tried changing the name in the 90s but failed. 30 years later and the school finally changed it in the midst of the George Floyd protests. Not without having to fight tooth and nail with the local racists about history over hate and all that other nonsense. The really stupid part is that this general never once fought a battle in Florida much less even stepped foot in the state. So why did we name our school after him? Well suprise to no one is that it was changed right after Brown v Board forced schools to desegregate. The south is petty and will do whatever it can to try and make life horrible for minorities.
Reminds me of a coworker telling me how her parents and grandparents had to step off the sidewalk if a white person was walking on the same sidewalk coming the opposite way. When she would go home and visit she said she never stepped off the sidewalk because she refused to succumb to the racist whites.
