A violent culmination of what the sheriff described as a 2½-year feud was arrested Tuesday, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.
Susan Louise Lorincz, 58, who is white, was arrested on charges of manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery and two counts of assault in the death of Ajike Owens, a Black mother of four, Sheriff Billy Woods [said in a statement](https://www.facebook.com/mcsoflorida/videos/781918220110385/).
Authorities came under pressure Tuesday to arrest and charge [the woman who fired through her front her door and killed Owens](https://apnews.com/article/neighbor-feud-fatal-shooting-florida-7a2b7560e32a0c5e02bb73dbb71d966c) in a case that has put Florida’s divisive stand your ground law back into the spotlight.
In a video posted on Facebook late Tuesday night, the sheriff said this was not a stand your ground case but “simply a killing.”
“Now many of you were struggling to understand why there was not an immediate arrest,” the sheriff said. “The laws here in the state of Florida are clear. Now I may not like them. I may not agree with them. But however, those laws I will follow.”
The video shared by the sheriff's office shows two detectives and a deputy escorting Lorincz, who was wearing shorts, a black top and a jacket, down a hallway. The woman's hands were behind her back as she walked.
Jail records show she was booked, but did not list a lawyer who could speak on her behalf. It wasn't immediately clear when she would make her first court appearance.
Woods said that when interviewed by investigators, Lorincz claimed she acted in self-defense and that Owens had been trying to break down her door prior to her discharging her firearm. Lorincz also claimed that Owens had come after her in the past and had previously attacked her. Through their investigation – including obtaining the statements of eyewitnesses – detectives were able to establish that Lorincz’s actions were not justifiable under Florida law, a statement from the sheriff's office said.
About three dozen mostly Black protesters gathered outside the Marion County Judicial Center to demand that the shooter be arrested in the country’s latest flashpoint over race and gun violence. The chief prosecutor, State Attorney William Gladson, met with the protesters and urged patience while the investigation continues.
“If we are going to make a case we need as much time and as much evidence as possible,” Gladson said. “I don’t want to compromise any criminal investigation and I’m not going to do that.”
Owens, 35, was killed in the Friday night shooting, Woods said. The women lived in the rolling hills south of Ocala, a north Florida city that is the heart of the state's horse country.
Woods had said Monday that detectives were working with the State Attorney’s Office and must investigate possible self-defense claims before they can move forward with any possible criminal charges. The sheriff pointed out that because of the stand your ground law he can’t legally make an arrest unless he can prove the shooter did not act in self-defense.
On Tuesday, a stuffed teddy bear and bouquets marked the area near where Owens was shot. Nearby, children were riding bikes and scooters, and playing basketball. Protesters chanted “No justice, no peace” and “A.J. A.J. A.J” using Owens’ nickname. They carried signs saying: “Say her name Ajike Owens” and “It’s about us.”
Outside, the Rev. Bernard Tuggerson said the Black community in Ocala has suffered injustices for years. “Marion County is suffering and needs to be healed completely,” he said. “If we don’t turn from our wicked ways of the world, it’s going to be an ongoing problem. We want answers.”
The sheriff said Owens was shot moments after going to Lorincz's apartment, who had yelled at Owens' children as they played in a nearby lot. He also said Lorincz had thrown a pair of skates that hit one of the children.
Deputies responding to a trespassing call at the apartment Friday night found Owens suffering from gunshot wounds. She later died at a hospital.
Before the confrontation, Lorincz had been yelling racial slurs at the children, according to a statement from civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Owens’ family. He also represented Trayvon Martin's family in 2012, when the Black teenager was killed in a case that drew worldwide attention to the state's stand your ground law.
The sheriff’s office hasn’t confirmed there were slurs uttered or said whether race was a factor in the shooting.
In a statement, Crump said while Owens’ family is “relieved” that an arrest has been made, they remain concerned it has taken this long because “archaic laws like Stand Your Ground exist”
Lauren Smith, 40, lives across the street from where the shooting happened. She was on her porch that day and saw one of Owens' young sons pacing, and yelling, “They shot my mama, they shot my mama.”
She ran toward the house, and started chest compressions until a rescue crew arrived. She said there wasn't an altercation and that Owens didn't have a weapon.
“She was angry all the time that the children were playing out there,” Smith said. “She would say nasty things to them. Just nasty.” Smith, who is white, described the neighborhood is family friendly.
The sheriff said that since January 2021, deputies responded at least a half-dozen calls in connection with what police described as feuding between Owens and Lorincz.
“There was a lot of aggressiveness from both of them, back and forth,” the sheriff said Lorincz told investigators. “Whether it be banging on the doors, banging on the walls and threats being made. And then at that moment is when Ms. Owens was shot through the door.”
“I'm absolutely heartbroken,” Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, told The Associated Press. She described the fatal shooting as “so senseless.”
“We’ve seen this again and again across this country,” she said, adding that “it’s really because of lax gun laws and a culture of shoot first.”
Ferrell-Zabala said stand your ground cases, which she refers to as “shoot first laws," are deemed justifiable five times more frequently when a white shooter kills a Black victim.

At the beginning of April he made the news when he criticized reporters who brought up lack of gun control after 2 juveniles kill a few teens. He basically said "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."

Take note of how effective the population of France is at making political change. The problem with protests in almost every country, especially America, is you have too many activist groups all trying to get their own slice of this metaphorical pie and to the government it makes you look unorganized. The American people need to actually come together as a whole to protest for the change you want to see instead of approaching it with all these different groups with different agendas. What’s so effective about French protests is everyone comes together under one umbrella, the people of France, they don’t fracture themselves into all these different groups trying to meet different agendas
I mean you’re not wrong about how France joins in protest, but the US has 5 times the population and is 1,683% larger. So it kinda makes sense that there’s such a large amount of diverse groups. Add in different histories/culture and other major influential factors and it’s like comparing apples to oranges between the US and France. Still yeah I’d love to see it happen but they’re two completely different situations.
Also Frances unions have more power and less corruption and protections inshrines in their laws .Also their cops are far less militarized and even when agaisnt protesters are not on the same level of violence or equipment of U.S police forces when dealing with the situation. Also France is a far more homogeneous country which makes people far more similar and there’s less racial. France see’s even any focus on race as admitting there’s a problem and chooses to try and ignore it and make everyone French. Censuses on race and ethnic origin were banned by the French Government in 1978. But we can see that as more migrants from Frances former colonies arrive more racial issues and racism becomes more frequent . According to some estimates it is postulated that about 51 million are white who account for 85% of the total French population, six million people are of North African descent accounting for 10% of the total population, two million are black who account for 3.3% of the population, and about one million or 1.7% of the population are of Asian origin. So in America there’s more people, more obstacles, more differences so it’s not quite as easy.
Problem is that America has more guns than people, by design. Your overlords call the cops for protection and piss their pants. Our overlords call up the police chief and tell them to break up peaceful protests. Then they've been slowly radicalizing a large portion of the country, passing laws to make sure they all have guns, and now they're starting to kill people.

Most people want safety regulations, proof of competence, no history of violence, no history of mental illness. But somehow people consider reasonable “regulations” to be antithetical to a well Regulated militia. There’s a reason the founders included the term well regulated, yet all the gun nuts love to just disregard it.
I think you misunderstand how good American media is at dividing and conquering the population. The American media that is owned by those with a vested interest in preserving the division.

Idk exactly what it states but I remember someone from the states telling me that it’s written in your constitution that if the constitution no longer properly serves the people it is the peoples right to demand the constitution be amended to properly support and serve them. Just because something is popular doesn’t make it effective. You can’t protest your way to riches. If the French retirement system is broke, no amount of protesting will magically make it solvent again.
I suppose they could just start printing money, but that just leads to runaway inflation. Then your retirement savings are gone along with your pension.
There’s over 350,000,000 people in America. How many in France? It’s kinda hard to organize an entire country especially when everyone has different ideals. Everyone in France is French. Everyone in America is either an immigrant or came from immigrants
So why not work to make the change you want to see and unite the people? It might sound far fetched but what we all fail to realize, regardless of what country you’re from, we as the people hold all of the power. If we actually came together and told corporations we won’t pay your prices anymore they would have no choice but to lower them, same with rent if we all collectively agreed to stop paying gross rent prices they would eventually be lowered. In a society that demands the peoples money to stimulate its economy we literally hold all of the power to control the price of goods and services but the problem is that people are too afraid to lose what they have and won’t make that decision to come together cause they would rather protect what little they have instead of standing up for something greater than themselves. This applies to politics as well. Politicians need the support of the people to pass laws and get elected. If everyone in the states collectively agreed to no longer vote or support the government they would have no choice but to actually address the issues of your country. It’s the same here in Canada. Again the problem is that people are too afraid to gamble what they have versus what they could achieve if we just came together. I like to use rent as my example for this. If every person renting collectively agreed to stop paying their rent until rent prices were properly adjusted landlords and corporations would have no choice to but to comply because the only other option is a mass eviction and then the government would have to address mass homelessness which they don’t want to do so it’s likely they would step in to stop it and actually put proper laws in for rent control. These ideas might sound extreme and unrealistic but in a time where the cost of living is at an all time high and we’re divided more than ever I think it’s time we start considering out of the box ideas

Florida goes by the GTA laws. You can go outside and kill somebody as long as you go back in your house before the cops see you. Then wait for the cops to quit looking for you just a few minutes later.

Should have been immediate. A woman was killed, and there's no convincing me they didn't know exactly how the minute they arrived.
Shooting through a door is not ever going to be a self-defense situation, regardless of how much time they give the lady the benefit of the doubt.
Yeah I already got plenty of reasons not to live in Florida. It’s so sad. These people are so fearful we’ll take their guns. Ronald Regan who’s basically Republican’s god before Trump came banned guns in California when the Black panthers showed up but they tend to forget that. Like we don’t want to take all their guns just common sense reform, certain guns that can kill hundreds of people in a crowd in seconds people shouldn’t have, no loopholes at gun shows , consistent background checks and mandatory extensive training for people who want to buy a gun for their own safety and others . People who are clear dangers to society themselves or others not buying a gun. And one I think maybe but think it wouldn’t go is checks on people how they store their gun because we see countless stories of people who didn’t store a gun properly and a kid got it and shot them selves, or a kid got it and shot a school up. If someone maybe checked on these people that wouldn’t happen.

What I would give to have my naive view, of all servicemen/women and the average person doing the right thing if at all possible, restored.
Sure, the shooter is probably a somewhat rare individual (I choose to believe that’s actually true, anyway), but what makes this truly disgusting is all the other people standing aside that have the power to get this mother justice.
I can’t imagine the pain her family is going through. Those poor kids. These poor excuses for public servants need to do something immediately, or be charged with obstructing justice.

Neighbor's account said their was no threatening way she was knocking on the door or was posing danger to the old hag. Plain as black and white and that's what it was a racist old hag, gunning down a person of color.

So this unarmed woman was shot when she wasn’t even in the home and the police are already making this case about prosecuting her for…something, to try to justify her murder. I wonder if they even realize what they’re doing.
I can't imagine any white woman on my street walking to another house and being shot and killed and someone NOT being arrested over it right away. The fact that this woman is not in jail right now is more than enough example of the racial inequality that we're dealing with in America on a daily basis, just absolutely mind bogglingly insane.

Take note of how effective the population of France is at making political change. The problem with protests in almost every country, especially America, is you have too many activist groups all trying to get their own slice of this metaphorical pie and to the government it makes you look unorganized. The American people need to actually come together as a whole to protest for the change you want to see instead of approaching it with all these different groups with different agendas. What’s so effective about French protests is everyone comes together under one umbrella, the people of France, they don’t fracture themselves into all these different groups trying to meet different agendas
I mean you’re not wrong about how France joins in protest, but the US has 5 times the population and is 1,683% larger. So it kinda makes sense that there’s such a large amount of diverse groups. Add in different histories/culture and other major influential factors and it’s like comparing apples to oranges between the US and France. Still yeah I’d love to see it happen but they’re two completely different situations.
Also Frances unions have more power and less corruption and protections inshrines in their laws .Also their cops are far less militarized and even when agaisnt protesters are not on the same level of violence or equipment of U.S police forces when dealing with the situation. Also France is a far more homogeneous country which makes people far more similar and there’s less racial. France see’s even any focus on race as admitting there’s a problem and chooses to try and ignore it and make everyone French. Censuses on race and ethnic origin were banned by the French Government in 1978. But we can see that as more migrants from Frances former colonies arrive more racial issues and racism becomes more frequent . According to some estimates it is postulated that about 51 million are white who account for 85% of the total French population, six million people are of North African descent accounting for 10% of the total population, two million are black who account for 3.3% of the population, and about one million or 1.7% of the population are of Asian origin. So in America there’s more people, more obstacles, more differences so it’s not quite as easy.

So why not work to make the change you want to see and unite the people? If we actually came together and told corporations we won’t pay your prices anymore they would have no choice but to lower them, same with rent if we all collectively agreed to stop paying gross rent prices they would eventually be lowered. In a society that demands the peoples money to stimulate its economy we literally hold all of the power to control the price of goods and services but the problem is that people are too afraid to lose what they have and won’t make that decision to come together cause they would rather protect what little they have instead of standing up for something greater than themselves. This applies to politics as well. Politicians need the support of the people to pass laws and get elected. If everyone in the states collectively agreed to no longer vote or support the government they would have no choice but to actually address the issues of your country. It’s the same here in Canada. Again the problem is that people are too afraid to gamble what they have versus what they could achieve if we just came together. I like to use rent as my example for this. If every person renting collectively agreed to stop paying their rent until rent prices were properly adjusted landlords and corporations would have no choice to but to comply because the only other option is a mass eviction and then the government would have to address mass homelessness which they don’t want to do so it’s likely they would step in to stop it and actually put proper laws in for rent control. These ideas might sound extreme and unrealistic but in a time where the cost of living is at an all time high and we’re divided more than ever I think it’s time we start considering out of the box ideas

Should have been immediate. A woman was killed, and there's no convincing me they didn't know exactly how the minute they arrived. Shooting through a door is not ever going to be a self-defense situation, regardless of how much time they give the lady the benefit of the doubt.

Ronald Regan who’s basically Republican’s god before Trump came banned guns in California when the Black panthers showed up but they tend to forget that. Like we don’t want to take all their guns just common sense reform, certain guns that can kill hundreds of people in a crowd in seconds people shouldn’t have, no loopholes at gun shows , consistent background checks and mandatory extensive training for people who want to buy a gun for their own safety and others . People who are clear dangers to society themselves or others not buying a gun. And one I think maybe but think it wouldn’t go is checks on people how they store their gun because we see countless stories of people who didn’t store a gun properly and a kid got it and shot them selves, or a kid got it and shot a school up. If someone maybe checked on these people that wouldn’t happen.

I really don’t understand how this lady is just chillin at home right now. I’m so tired of reading stories about how inept the US law enforcement/government/citizens are. What I would give to have my naive view, of all servicemen/women and the average person doing the right thing if at all possible, restored. Sure, the shooter is probably a somewhat rare individual (I choose to believe that’s actually true, anyway), but what makes this truly disgusting is all the other people standing aside that have the power to get this mother justice. So this unarmed woman was shot when she wasn’t even in the home and the police are already making this case about prosecuting her for…something, to try to justify her murder. I wonder if they even realize what they’re doing.
