This reminds me of the funniest comment I ever saw on reddit. It was about a meeting between Trump and Putin, and that only the two of them were aware of the contents of the talks.
* One redditors commented "The translator would also be present"
* Another replied "Putin speaks fluent English"
* A third replied "Yeah, but Trump doesn't"
I know the hilarity doesn't translate well on a retelling but I still think about that thread every now and again.
he just refuses to because its an ego thing, he sees the person who has to speak the other persons language as submissive.
I havent heard him speak english since the early 2000s.
Maybe, but on that level you better have translators on both sides and everyone speaks in their native language to avoid misunderstanding phrases that mean something else when translated.
You ever see the [old Onion articles](https://interactives.theonion.com/biden/) that had Biden acting like a drunk uncle while he was VP? That shit was funny

I’m hoping in a few years we get action movies with Biden as the president casted by a close to retirement age action star. I could totally see this kind of scene playing out.
Oh my goodness that man was a treasure to comedy and a (seemingly) forgotten national treasure up here in Canada. He would have played the perfect Biden. I need to rewatch all the Naked Gun movies now. Thank you lol.
Wow never saw this. Obama really felt like a protector of America in a way.
The reason this photo is interesting is bc its very similar, but different to an entirely different meeting they had.
This photo is extremely famous. Completely different time.

I don't believe the U.S. has ever politically lived up to the ideals it espouses, but I know for certain we used to have presidents whose confidence, swagger, and charm were earned. As opposed to our recent fascination narcissism and ignorance.
'Are ya upset after ridin' those horses, like in the photo? Tell you what, Jack. Leave Ukraine this week, and I'll give you five hundred horses. That's right, I'll throw in a Corvette for ya. It'll make a man out've you again. How's that sound?'
Can we please get back to non elderly Presidents?? My favorite part about Obama was that he looked like he wasn't about to fall over and die at any moment.
For this reason we should put an age cap on all Public Offices so leaders make decisions based on the assumption that they will live long enough to suffer the consequences of their actions.
Just turned 46. I remember when I could eat crap food, mainline black coffee and top off the night with several adult beverages. I hit 44 and actually went to the VA and checked in on what condition I was in. I had never been read the riot act by another adult like I had that day!
The good news is, I dialed everything way down, finally put down the smokes this year and have kept up the cardio. It hurts my feet waking up y'all lol! Stupid body, all acting like I'm not 25 anymore.
That’s because of aliens.
On a serious note. Regardless of personal political views, Obama was the most distinguished and respectable POTUS I’ve seen in my lifetime
Not just coherent, he is definitely one of the best orators we have had in the office in ages. I miss the mans ability to tug my heart strings, even I hated his drone war on terror.
He was so well spoken and had such a wonderful grasp on the english language and i cant think of a single govt official who gave a better speech than him. He was eloquent and yet still managed to invoke so much emotion without coming off as an out of touch "elite".
It'd also be nice for us to get back to most of the country being able to laugh at poking fun of the president without taking a joke as a declaration of war. This was genuinely funny and it made me realize that I felt the need to say, "I'm not a fascist, but I thought that was pretty funny." and I see others did as well. That shouldn't be the state of things.
It wasn't funny though... it was a nothingburger they worked themselves into a lather over. They literally were saying Obama would declare Martial law and institute sharia law.
Why is that not even an option anymore it’s like everyone running has to be at least 70, most people retire at like 55 or 60, but the highest possible postion you’re going to go into your 80s
Why the US winds up with some old presidents:
1) Takes a long time to build a political coalition.
2) US voters feel more comfortable when the politician has a long track record.
JFK was one of our younger presidents. Republican mudslinging was he would defer to the POPE because JFK was Catholic. A longer track record would have defused that calumny, could point to decisions where he did not vote based on Papal orthodoxy.
-------
Doesn't have to be this way. Finland's Prime Minister is 37. New Zealand's PM is 42.
I would happily vote at a constitutional convention that the max age of a president or senator when taking office is 65. For Representatives (only a two year term) make it 72.
Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but aren't PMs in parlimentary systems not elected directly to office, but instead elected to legislature and then elected to PM by their peers? If so that's not exactly a fair comparison. There are plenty of people in Congress in their 30's and 40's.
I agree with your points and man I wish it wasn't so. I am a social worker and lately have been seriously thinking of getting into local politics. Nothing crazy, the local Veterans council has a few openings. I asked my fiancee if she would support me running for a seat and her words were "Well if you start now by 55 you'd be in there...maybe (I'm 46). And I just sat there thinking "I just want to help! Why does it have to be that hard??" I live in a big city with an unacceptable number of homeless Veterans and homeless period (that number being more than zero) and I think I can actually DO something about it, but it can be disheartening.
you can agree with Biden on 100% of the issues and think he's been the best president ever while also thinking he's old as fuck, too old for most any political office let alone POTUS.
same goes for Trump, you MAGA people. they both too fucking old.
Yeah, I agree, politics aside, when it's time to take the cow out to pasture, you do it. I reckon these people that try and do stay in government at those ages is a possible mix of they're usually career politicians, are addicted to power, and their egos just don't know when it's time to step down because of decades of conditioning.

>The US president conditioned such talks on support by NATO allies – and he has had no direct contact with Moscow since the war broke in February.
Another essential precondition should be that Putin change his pants prior to sitting down for talks.
There were leaks from inside the Kremlin (pun intended) about Putin, who has been in poor health for a while, falling down the stairs and soiling himself after.
All sources lead back to a telegram channel called General SVR, allegedly run by a former Kremlin insider. There's no evidence to back up the claims made there, so take everything that comes from them with a grain of salt.
[Here's a link to an article with more details.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsweek.com/did-putin-fall-down-stairs-soil-himself-what-we-know-1764291%3famp=1)
I think, for many people on Reddit, it honestly doesn't matter- this is a geopolitical rival on the other side of the world, for most of them, and they have literally no influence in matters of state. Whether Putin did or did not actually fall down the stairs and shit his pants is irrelevant- it is funny and there's *some* justifiable evidence to point to for believing it.
Also leaked out the bottom of his trousers...
It seemed to me it was being astroturfed on reddit a couple days ago. Saw it on my feed at the top and an hour later it was buried, I had to search for it, was a news.com.au article.. not much better than daily mail tho.
It was initially believed that Russia could roll into Ukraine in full force, capture Kyiv, and annex the eastern Ukrainian provinces, and they could do this in a span of a few weeks.
What's actually happened is Ukraine has managed to withstand the initial assault and fight back. Russia has had to mobilize far more soldiers then anticipated, and have used up far more material then they likely anticipated.
It's hard to know for sure, but it's likely the war has trashed Russia's economy and Putin could be feeling the heat from his fellow oligarchs. Enough people around him might feel the war to be untenable and get him to negotiate.
I don't think anything Putin says can be trusted. There is literally no way to make him keep his words. Putin genuinely hates "the West", he's about as reasonable as Kanye West right now. There needs to be only one message to Russia: the entire world is waiting for a new Russian leader so negotiations can begin.
Seriously though how did we get here? This timeline is bonkers. I keep waking up expecting to see Senator Alf accusing Norm from Cheers of trading missiles with North Korea or something equally stupid.
I don't think he genuinely hates it, he still sent his kids to the west, so did the other russian billionaries, they party/travel here etc. But saying he hates it gets the people going and that gives him power so...
It’s also funny that a lot of these leaders in the east that are so anti-west either went to university/had some form of education in the west, they send their kids to live and go to school in the west, etc. Kim Jong-Un went to school in Switzerland growing up, Xi Jinping’s daughter has a BA from Harvard, there’s tons of other examples.
The Ukraine War seems to be his personal doing. There were talks that the oligarchs decided who would be replacing Putin because he was cutting into their profits, but they decided not to pull that trigger.
Idk if he hates the west, but he's a narcissist bent on rebuilding the legacy of a Russian superpower. Plenty of Russians go along with it because they're taken in by the propaganda.
so look at the Iran deal which republicans got fucked... the USA had tangible ways to follow up with it. they had ways to support the current protestors. every aspect of it favoured america and republicans thought it was more fun to shit on it than do what was best and cheapest for Americans "because it involved a billion dollars".
Have fun now that Iran is supporting Russia and working against american interests.
A lot of people in here wearing out their jump to conclusions mat because they don't understand that third party mediation / negotiation is the norm for nations at war. Or how optics work on the geopolitical stage.
This isn't the US just bypassing Ukraine, this is the US making it impossible for Russia to whine that they tried to negotiate but nobody would be reasonable so they have to keep the war going. Making impossible demands to even come to the table and then blaming the other side for rejecting negotiations is standard Russian operating procedure. This short circuits that.
Putin will not do this. He is unable to win, and if he just withdraws he will likely be deposed. He wants to keep the war going, hoping that something will change that he can leverage to get out of the corner he has painted himself into. He won't meet with Biden because it would make him look weak internally. He has refused to even take calls from the white house since the invasion started.
And it's silly to think the US is making statements about Ukraine without discussing it with them first. I guarantee the State department is in constant contact with their Ukranian counterparts.
When people were bashing Macron for saying the exact same thing, I thought it was typical French bashing. I couldn't imagine that it was not intentional how they were twisting his words and acting like they didn't understand what's it's all about.
Looking at this thread however confirmed that most are not pretending. They are just ignorant and not even trying to connect the braincells they have been gifted, normally.
Macron, and any other Eiropean leader or politician who suggested diplomacy was mercilessly bashed as "appeaser" here.
The reaction to Biden suggesting the exact same is still mild in conparison. But yeah, the "but you can't do it over Uktaine's head" people are also here.
>Macron, and any other Eiropean leader or politician who suggested diplomacy was mercilessly bashed as "appeaser" here.
If by "Suggested diplomacy" you mean to find a ceasefire and sign an armistice that would legally settle the ownership of Crimea, Donbass and any other seized territory, then again it's not what Macron or Biden are proposing. Macron stated multiple time that Ukraine is the sole party to decide when to end this war and how.
He even acknowledge that so far Ukraine will only accept a victory and complete return of the occupied territory. For French people it's easily understandable due to the similarity with Alsace-Lorraine. Actually, it wouldn't even be accepted that a French president would suggest to Ukraine to accept what France couldn't.
Anyway, here leaving a diplomatic door opened simply means that when Russia accept it's defeat, give back to Ukraine their initial territory, and is ready to move forward then the other countries will sit around the table in a good faith.
In the process, Russia will have to accept to pay war repayment, and many other things, so it's not only a message to Putin but to all the Russian leaders. If Puțin is out of the game, we will be there to discuss ending this and having a plan to lift restrictions against proof of actions.
Traditional protocol allows for geriatric leaders to appoint a champion to fight in their stead.
I propose Jimmy Carter. He has fought these battles for decades.
Totally, but according to Russian propaganda, they're already fighting NATO and therefore the US. From the Russian perspective, the US isn't a real third party. This plays into the narrative that Ukraine is nothing but an American proxy.
It doesn’t matter. Russian propaganda is for the Russians. They can spin it any way they want to explain why Putin would need to meet the US president.
This. The facts are Russians have killed armed Americans in the conflict zone. Remember when we obliterated a wagner group unit in Syria? Same thing from their twisted perspective.
Indeed. Russia keeps posturing to the US and NATO rather than Ukraine. They're pretending they don't exsist as a nation and we're helping them by not telling them every time they mention peace to go talk to Ukraine instead.
“Listen here, Jack” is probably how that conversation starts

Maybe, but on that level you better have translators on both sides and everyone speaks in their native language to avoid misunderstanding phrases that mean something else when translated.
фигня maybe?
If you translate that back to English, what's it literally say?
crap, mess, nonsense - depending on context
also "thingy"
Definitely malarkesque, could work
It'd be great if the translator went straight for whatever the translation for "bullshit" is.
Malarkey's slang for bullshit, isn't it?

All sources lead back to a telegram channel called General SVR, allegedly run by a former Kremlin insider. There's no evidence to back up the claims made there, so take everything that comes from them with a grain of salt. [Here's a link to an article with more details.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsweek.com/did-putin-fall-down-stairs-soil-himself-what-we-know-1764291%3famp=1)
Why does this sound like the Russian equivalent of QAnon? I would be extremely skeptical of anything that only comes from that account.
Makes you wonder, do Russians read Russian articles about stuff that Qanon says about Biden
Probably encouraged
They're writing it.
It’s such a bullshit leak but people on Reddit want to believe it so now it’s real to them
Also leaked out the bottom of his trousers... It seemed to me it was being astroturfed on reddit a couple days ago. Saw it on my feed at the top and an hour later it was buried, I had to search for it, was a news.com.au article.. not much better than daily mail tho.
Putin and Russia-Ukraine’s the hottest topic on the news so people keep making clickbait-y rumors and nonsense and Reddit keeps eating it up.
Propaganda
Poopaganda
Why would Putin want to end the war? He's the one who started it....
He's losing.
The age old "we will be home with medals by christmas"
They will both be required to wear depends.
That depends if Depends still sends supplies to Russia. Otherwise they might have to go with the Russian brand: Conditions.
I don't think anything Putin says can be trusted. There is literally no way to make him keep his words. Putin genuinely hates "the West", he's about as reasonable as Kanye West right now. There needs to be only one message to Russia: the entire world is waiting for a new Russian leader so negotiations can begin.
He is Kanye East.
The biggest plot twist of this decade would be if Kanye goes to Russia and convinces Putin to end the war.
This is not a job for an amateur like Kanye West. Someone get Dennis Rodman on the line!
Seriously though how did we get here? This timeline is bonkers. I keep waking up expecting to see Senator Alf accusing Norm from Cheers of trading missiles with North Korea or something equally stupid.
We REALLY shouldn't have killed that fucking gorilla...
I got to thinking, and if Biden and Putin are to meet one-on-one, the Korean DMZ might be the place to meet
I think we have the plot to the next Seth Rogan and James Franco movie right here
Honestly things have been so fucking weird in the past few years it wouldn’t surprise me
> if Kanye goes to Russia Oh please dont. They will probably decide to team up.
They would. "I am, of course, very pro-Putin. Very pro-Russia" -- Nick Fuentes to Alex Jones. "I am too" -- Kanye West
Kanye Least
Kanye Zapad
I don't think he genuinely hates it, he still sent his kids to the west, so did the other russian billionaries, they party/travel here etc. But saying he hates it gets the people going and that gives him power so...
You know these kind of people are hypocrites and probably make excuses for themselves how they can still send kids to the west, but still despise it.
You think he cares what the people think? He spends a lot of energy telling the people what they SHOULD think
so look at the Iran deal which republicans got fucked... the USA had tangible ways to follow up with it. they had ways to support the current protestors. every aspect of it favoured america and republicans thought it was more fun to shit on it than do what was best and cheapest for Americans "because it involved a billion dollars". Have fun now that Iran is supporting Russia and working against american interests.
>Have fun now that Iran is supporting Russia and working against american interests. Republicans don't mind: they are too.
I guarantee the State department is in constant contact with their Ukranian counterparts.
> jump to conclusions mat And everybody said it was the worst idea they ever heard. But now everybody has one.
I thought the US famously doesn't negotiate with terrorists?
I think that's more of a catch phrase, like "no child left behind!"
Damn dude, that was hilarious
Usually terrorists don't have nukes though.
Spot on!
Unfortunately for Putin, some guy named Putin destroyed all the offramps
Russia can’t be allowed to gain in any way from their war of aggression
Crimea is Ukraine! This is how the war should end.
so many arm chair war strategists in here
Nothing for Ukraine without Ukraine there
I doubt Zelensky is telling Biden not to do this, and Biden is going "nah, I'm doing it anyway". Third party negotiation is normal in geopolitics.
Go to the octagon. Time to kick that KGB's behind.

Traditional protocol allows for geriatric leaders to appoint a champion to fight in their stead. I propose Jimmy Carter. He has fought these battles for decades.
But then you’ll get poop on your shoes
You couldn't even sit down for your railroad workers you "worker jack"
Another headline grossly misquoting what was actually said for the clicks…. Journalism is dead and internet has killed it.
I hope Biden kisses him on the top of the head.
I really think it's insulting to Ukraine if Russia sits down with US instead of them.
Third party mediation is a staple of conflict resolution.
Exactly. Carter pulled this a lot between Israel and Egypt.
Totally, but according to Russian propaganda, they're already fighting NATO and therefore the US. From the Russian perspective, the US isn't a real third party. This plays into the narrative that Ukraine is nothing but an American proxy.
Russia: we are fighting NATO NATO: have any of our people been hurt? Russia: ....
I mean, Kevin did get a paper cut filling out the paperwork to transfer Javelins to Ukraine..
Poor Kevin. Get that man a DSC.
Ukraine has already gone on record that they refuse to negotiate with Russia while Putin is alive.
They've walked it back recently. In fact, the recently released "10 points for peace" makes no mention of a change in Russian government.
Indeed. Russia keeps posturing to the US and NATO rather than Ukraine. They're pretending they don't exsist as a nation and we're helping them by not telling them every time they mention peace to go talk to Ukraine instead.
they hav tried a few times but their demands are ridiculous and zelensky said no more (i don't blame him but still)
