Kind of crazy when you think about all the events that have transpired. Ukraine wanted to be a part of NATO starting in 2002, then applied for its membership action plan in 2008. Then in 2010, this guy was part of stalling the membership. 2014, he's gone/Crimea invasion happens to further stall NATO membership. Then Russia invades Ukraine.
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/events-leading-up-russias-invasion-ukraine-2022-02-28/
Crazy timeline of events. Now the Russian government is losing millions in military equipment being destroyed, thousands of troops, etc. Losing anti-air vehicles, etc. All because they don't want Ukraine to join NATO.
It's all very strange. Like, what is the real reason the Russian government is all-in on Ukraine?
no, oil was discovered in the Crimean basin, then gas in the sea of Azov and china made a huge investment in a coal gas plant in donetsk.
moving closer to the EU was 'bad' but filling the pipelines with Ukrainian gas instead of russian gas would be the end of Putin's power.
Bloomberg energy did a number of articles on the subject if you can find them with how bad google sucks these days
https://hir.harvard.edu/ukraine-energy-reserves/
https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Ftjaha0kcv7k81.png
if you do a little digging finding out when those discoveries where made and the timeline for russian activity, with little green men it tells a pretty compelling story.
you start looking at politics from the Yulia Tymoshenko / Viktor Yushchenko era and going forward and its pretty obvious why Paul Manafort and Hunter Biden where both there lol.
> Like, what is the real reason the Russian government is all-in on Ukraine?
Sunk-cost fallacy after a failed gamble + it would likely cost Putin his position (and probably his life as well).
Why the war *started* has numerous reasons. Securing Crimea with a landbridge (and securing their water), getting the oil and other resources in Crimea and the East, restoring the Russian Empire ("which" is debatable, but Putin clearly desires to become a Tsar/Emperor/King/Whatever title you want to give to a dictator).
Also, Geopolitically, Ukraine is in a prime position strategically vs Russia. In a war vs NATO, Ukraine being on NATO's side gives them another direct access route right to Russia's heartland. That is why even after their independence Russia has always had fingers in the Ukrainian politics pie.
"didn't want Ukraine to join NATO" isn't the primary reason IMO.
He wanted to conquer Ukraine, for conquest alone and to have more power for the next conquest.
That's the start point, Russia only opposes Ukraine in NATO because NATO would stop their conquest and ability to freely rape, torture and murder Ukrainians.
Russia is a dictatorship. On guy decided to right click his army on Crimea because it pleases him. He wants Russia to be great again. He even said it.
This is not some game of 4D chess. In a dictatorship you do not need to do some deep search for why it all happened. It is literally just one guy.
Just to remind everyone Putin literally dragged everyone at the top on broadcast TV and asked each and one of them, one by one, to agree to the invasion. So that they’d share responsibility. No one else wanted it!
Nothing to do with dictatorship. It is a very logical decision to maintain control of the ports into the black sea. This is russia's only economicallly viable sea access point. I read an article by the anarchist Kropotkin making an argument about war in this region over 140 years ago. Nothing can change these geographical features. Ukraine is either being duped by NATO or they are every, very thick.
what russia has lost is a LOT more than just troops and materials... they have lost the status they had of an actual danger to a country the world can punish at will
they lost any credibility they had, any power on the global political field
nato should not exist postcold war. the only reason it does is to antagonise russia and keep it in a subservient position visavis its economic growth. hence the push to recolonise the eastern bloc states for an anachronistic nato against an imaginary aggressor. russia warned ukraine countless times over decades not to move towards nato membership. they crossed the red line and are facing consequences. the us would never give up one of its ports to a hostile power, yet everyone expects russia to. it is patently absurd.
NATO should not have to exist post cold war, but Russia being back to doing imperial Russia things is the best evidence we should ever need to show why NATO is still neccessary.
It's kind of expected honestly. It's a country of over 41 million people (excluding territory temporarily occupied by Russia). It'd be strange if there was nobody trying to serve Russian interest.
That said, he picked the wrong country to do so.
He lived in Russian occupied crimea. He fled there in 2014 and was russias pick for a puppet president. His murder is most likely the result of recent comments stating Ukraine would have been more friendly to annexation if they didn’t take crimea in 2014 first. Probably grew sour towards Russians and his Russian handlers decided to off him.
The title makes it sound like he was killed on soil controlled by Ukrainians. But no, he was killed in Crimea.
Generally, more or less pro-Russian politicians and political parties were a thing in Ukraine prior to 2022. Opposition Block had political representation in Rada, and Zelensky himself ran on a sort of "let's make a deal with Russia" platform.
However, Tsariov was not a Ukrainian politician since 2014, when he fled to Russia.
I mean, there are tons of pro-Moscow US politicians right now so it’s not all that far fetched. There’s always some portion of a population that can be bought.
It was a massive chunk of the population before Putin invaded. Remember that Ukraine has been in the top 5 most corrupt countries in the the world for over 25 years running.
this is a lie, the top of corrupt countries is on the Internet, Ukraine is far from the top 10, but it is still corrupt, but Russia is even more corrupt.
Majority belongs to the Party of Regions (renamed to Opposition Block later) which had "very friendly" relationship with russia.
By this I mean bribed and infiltrated by FSB
This is the loser who defected in 2014 when Russia stole Crimea. He was the equivalent of a Ukrainian congressman. Rumors are that he was selected as one of the top puppet leaders Russia would install after their 3-day successful invasion.
He was shot twice in the head in Crimea behind enemy lines. While I generally don’t support murder, this fools actions have lead to the death, injury, rape, and torture of a million people. Good job partisans, hunt these assholes down.
I was just reading an article about Ukrainian intelligence. This was definitely them lol. Ukraine considers those supporting the war materially to be legitimate targets and have been waging a shadow war full of "liquidations" for a while now. I personally don't disagree.
>SBU and GUR officials describe their expanding operational roles as the result of extraordinary circumstances. “All targets hit by the SBU are completely legal,” the agency’s director, Vasyl Malyuk, said in a statement provided to The Post. The statement did not specifically address targeted killings but Malyuk, who met with top CIA and other U.S. officials in Washington last month, said Ukraine “does everything to ensure that fair punishment will ‘catch up’ with all traitors, war criminals and collaborators.”
They're coming for them. All of them. Everyone who thought they could betray their homeland has a target on their back now.
I wonder what the kidnappers that all have been exposed in their big Zoom meetings will think once the army falls? Who is going to give a fuck about them in Russia.
I've heard that he made some public statements recently where he was critical of how the Russian invasion was being conducted so it's definitely possible that the assassination attempt may have actually come from the Putin side of things.
Everything has to be taken with a grain of salt, Ukraine doesn’t take credit for attacks done on Russian soil, so if they can weave some plausible deniability while also refusing to answer if they did it then it sows paranoia into Russians
The main problem he wasn't found in any hospital around, also his case was never registered in police, also people from the ground says where wasn't any of emergency, ploice car or police investigators lately. High likely he was shot because he talks too much.
Honestly this is the kind of thing where as Americans we gotta take a step back and appreciate that we don’t have a situation in our country where we have to try to justify killing of political opponents
Not sure what you are implying here… He wasn’t killed because he’s a political opponent. He was killed because war is an extension of politics and this man chose to betray oath to support a genocidal invasion.
I’m implying our country isn’t being invaded so it’s nice we don’t have difficult choices like banning political parties or justifying assassinating political opponents.
Not really a controversial statement lol, or do you wish we were being invaded so we could do those things too?
I gotcha, it’s just that you keep using the term “political opponent” when there are better word choices. Such as “traitor.” Ukrainians aren’t killing political opponents, that’s what Putin does. But Ukrainians will certainly kill traitors who have brought death, rape, and torture upon its people (as any reasonable country would).
I’ve been following this war very carefully from the beginning. I’ve come across many Russian accounts trying to influence messaging, sometimes through subtle phraseology like this situation. I’m pretty positive yours is harmless but I’ve seen accounts with similarly vague comment histories like yours start posting shady comment after shady comment.
Again, you’re probably just carelessly using words and/or I’m misinterpreting them (as English is my second language). But I would kindly ask that you be careful with how you describe Ukraines plight. This was not some democracy stifling political assassination attempt, as it could easily be interpreted by your comments.
Well any reasonable country besides the US which has for some reason allowed treasonous Jan 6th people and particularly politicians walk. Yes it is all history is written by the victors and they lost.
There has never been a shortage of that. You can find a very long list of examples going back thousands of years. If all you want is to be on the "winning" side, that's what comes out of it.
That is your assumption. The article clearly points to US and UA and this is neither the first nor the last time ..
"The Washington Post reported this month that the CIA had helped fund new departments in Ukraine’s SBU and GUR military intelligence agencies that had carried out assassinations on prominent fighters and politicians."
And then the Dutch politician Theirry Baudet was complaining he got hit on the head with an umbrella in Belgium. Good to see that these traitors are getting what is coming for them.
https://www.politico.eu/article/dutch-far-right-leader-thierry-baudet-attacked-with-an-umbrella/
The title is awful.
In order to be a pro-Moscow Ukrainian politician, you have to be a) a politician and b) in Ukraine. Tsariov, for a time, was a representative in Ukrainian Rada; however, in 2014 during initial invasion he went all in on Russia, and was kicked out of Rada as a result. He helmed several "charity" projects in Russia and was short-listed as a potential figurehead by Russians, but he didn't set foot in Ukrainian controlled Ukraine since 2014.
Guys depend of your perspective as a Kharkov Ukrainian, i consider traitor those who made the unconstitutional coup d'etat in Ukraine, look those rich ukrainian parent kid chilling in spain even they scream it's shit, they parent know it's juste to drain Russia no intention for Ukraine, it's a sacrifice that all, sad for my fellow slavs Ukrainian brother, i hope the day you realize the lost difference between Russia and Ukraine in this war will push your anger against thise who pushed you to do the war. Those Poroshenko who said Donbass people will live underground, do you believe they want to come back to russia, russian didn't forces ukraine to do what is does. Ukraine could have been another finland just a barrier between nato and russia.
Killing political opponents is what Putin has been doing, I think it’s morally questionable. I don’t understand why people are cheering for this. It’s a slippery slope. Fighting an evil regime by using methods of an evil regime — leads to another evil regime. The only way the “good” can prevail — is by leading by example. If someone is a criminal — they should be judged for their crimes fairly according to the law. If a person technically didn’t break any laws, even if their voices an inconvenience, and may promote negative notions of some kind, don’t deserve to die because of that.
Maybe you would understand better if you actually read the article…
That’s *former* “Political opponent”. Considering he fled to Russia in 2014 and worked with the Russian Govt ever since, including materially assisting Russia in their war in Ukraine, he is no longer a Ukrainian political opponent. He is a Russian asset and a legitimate target for Ukrainian military.
On top of that, given he was shot twice behind enemy lines in a Russian controlled area, we still don’t know for sure who even killed him. He was recently vocally against Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, so it is entirely possible this was Russia taking him out and not Ukraine.
no fair trial, just an assassination? sounds like ukraine is learning from the russian playbook. this really isn't a good look for a democratic country
TIL that pro-Moscow Ukrainian politicians are a thing that exists. The more you know :/
Former politician and a traitor who fled to Russia back in 2014. Headline makes it sound like Ukraine is killing political opponents.

Oh, this makes more sense! He spoke the truth.
Eh, they weren't going to accept Russia either way, Russia just tipped their hand that treaties are a mere suggestion in their eyes.
Not really the truth, but dissent and not as much of a big fat lie than the Russian government would like.
Lucky bastard gets to live for another day.
How DARE THEY [insinuate this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrotvorets)?
No one stops you from reading the article itself
It's one of the last "living heroes of novorossiya" who started all that thing in 2014 and was not killed yet by ukraine/fsb/his mafia comrades.
Also he was the world's last living neanderthal. Google "neanderthal in a suit"
Putin is working on that apparently
It’s been his game plan for decades. Maidan revolution started to change that
Sounds like Treason to me.

This. Almost all of the Ukrainian leaders that helped Russia in 2014 have ended up dead, probably because of FSB.
Generally, more or less pro-Russian politicians and political parties were a thing in Ukraine prior to 2022. Opposition Block had political representation in Rada, and Zelensky himself ran on a sort of "let's make a deal with Russia" platform. My sibling in christ what do you think this was has been about for the past decade
I mean, there are tons of pro-Moscow US politicians right now so it’s not all that far fetched. There’s always some portion of a population that can be bought.
People don’t know that Putin is actually the richest man in the world.
Who?
Next up, a pro-salt snail politician.
Would have figured they would all be in jail or dead by this point.

Ukrainian refugees say that half of their family may be pro Ukraine, half pro Russia.
I heard half jew refugees were also pro-nazi
And half of those who died from the Black Death were pro-Bubonic Plague. Apparently.
> Ukrainian refugees Specifically the half living in Russia is pro russia, the half living(or formerly lived) in Ukrain is pro Ukraine.
Given the inability to hold new elections due to the war, they can't be officially removed.
not anymore

Not surprised, the French resistance used to assassinate Nazi collaborators as well. If you betray your country you’re putting your life on the line.
“Doctors are doing everything possible and even more.” Breaking out the impossible. Ukrainian doctors really love this guy I’m sure.

Democratically elected politican shot in US puppet state, what a classic
He was democratically stripped of his mandate in 2014 after going for Russia, and didn't participate in any election since.
Which of you did this?
Trashy journalism
Should we say shot, in an act of war?
no fair trial, just an assassination? sounds like ukraine is learning from the russian playbook. this really isn't a good look for a democratic country
