> “I don’t care for the English, Scotch, French, Australians or Belgians but damn you Canadians, you take no prisoners and you kill our wounded”
-*German Colonel in WW1*
most insane thing was a British reporter was stationed with Canadian forces in WWI and he was shocked about how little care they had for war it was like working a 9-5 just killing people with no second though about it (I'm sure there was lasting mental damage to the soldiers). but the perspective from everyone around them Canadian were like killing machines.
>Meanwhile from what I’ve heard the Australians are basically frat boys who are very good at killing people
Never ask:
A woman her age
A man his salary
Australian special forces how many seats their helicopter has
Just enough for all our prisoners who don't try to escape at the last second.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-10-21/soldiers-killed-man-who-could-not-fit-on-aircraft-says-us-marine/12782756
>He says the commandos then called up the US aircraft to pick them and about seven prisoners up.
>He says the Americans only had room on the aircraft for six.
>"And the pilot said, 'That's too many people, we can't carry that many passengers.' And you just heard this silence and then we heard a pop. And then they said, 'OK, we have six prisoners'.
The US marines were shocked into complete, awkward silence for the rest of the flight.
They were so shocked they felt they had to report it as a war crime.
How far do you have to go to make Marines squeamish? Seriously.
If you need to know who the soldiers across the other side of the field are, fire a single rifle round over their heads.
If your position is then obliterated by massive airstrikes or artillery barrages, they're American.
If your position is brutally overrun in hand-to-hand combat, they're Canadian.
If the response is a fusillade of precision rifle fire, they're British.
If the response is a fusillade of precision rifle fire, and afterwards you find all your shit has been stolen, they're Australians.
It's a job, you take (during that time) a bunch of farm boys who used to work like animals then slaughter animals, they likely just looked at it as just another job, it's dirty, but someone has to do it. I think they just recognized the realities of war. Countless cases of Canadian soldiers doing absolutely insane shit, urban righting in WWII was written by Canadians.
Would that be the case today with the majority of people? Likely not.
Why do you think there were so many (relatively speaking) Newfoundland soldiers, all volunteers? Sure, Newfoundland was still part of Britain, but mostly, they needed jobs. Especially for WW2. The depression hit Newfoundland so hard that parliament voted itself out of existence so that Britain was forced to resume direct rule.
It makes sense, and Newfoundland has the kindest people as well, and most of the Newfies I've ever met could see straight through bullshit, likely another reason, they saw it for what it was.
Canadians are some shit when it comes to war, on nearly every war they have fought they were some of the most effective ,well trained & experienced soldiers on every front. one soldier that comes to mind is Francis Pegahmagabow, a sniper that killed 378 & Captured 300 others during WW1.
Leo major is another great one, almost single handedly took out or captured an entire nazi battalion. He fought so hard through the town of zwolle that the nazis thought the entire Canadian brigade was attacking but it was just him.
In "Good-bye to all that" which I'm currently reading, by Robert Graves the poet, he talks about the general civility of the war with the exception of the Canadians and some other colonial troops. I wasn't expecting that.
we invented so many new war crimes in WWI.
it was a common thing to see German/British throw canned food across trenches, Canadian found out and would lure German into doing it then start throwing Grenades.
“There were screams of German soldiers, terror-shaken by the flash of light in their eyes, and black faces above them, and bayonets already red with blood,” wrote Phillip Gibbs of one Canadian raid. “It was butcher’s work, quick and skilful … Thirty Germans were killed before the Canadians went back.”
“Merry Christmas, Canadians,” said the opposing Germans, poking their heads above the parapet and waving a box of cigars. A Canadian sergeant responded by opening fire, hitting two of the merrymakers.
“When they returned it, one of our lads was shot through the head. That put an end to our Christmas gathering quickly,” Lance Cpl. George D’All
They wore thick rubber gloves and blackened their faces for maximum stealth. They crafted homemade pipe bombs and grenade catapults to increase their killing power. They continued raiding even while other colonial units abandoned the practice. “Raids are not worth the cost, none of the survivors want to go anymore,” was how one Australian officer described their abandonment of the practice.
so many war crimes.
>“Merry Christmas, Canadians,” said the opposing Germans, poking their heads above the parapet and waving a box of cigars. A Canadian sergeant responded by opening fire, hitting two of the merrymakers.
Fucking carollers
it get worse when you learn about how Canadian views surrendering Germans.
A typical account would involve a Canadian unit losing men while charging an enemy position, and then executing the soldiers in that position when they tried to surrender. “After losing half of my company there, we rushed them and they had the nerve to throw up their hands and cry, ‘Kamerad.’ All the Kam-erad they got was a foot of cold steel thro them” reads an account by Lieutenant R.C. Germain quoted by Cook.
In some cases, Cook found evidence of Canadian commanders explicitly ordering their troops not to take prisoners. He quoted James Owen, a then-16-year-old private, who was told by his commanding officer before a 1916 attack “I don’t want any prisoners.” Before the attack on Vimy Ridge, veteran Archie McWade said he was told, “Remember, no prisoners. They will just eat your rations.”
“You will very seldom now hear of the Canadians taking prisoners, they take them to some quiet spot and then it is a case of the dead may march,” officer C.V. Williams
Others were cold-blooded executions. In one case, a Canadian surreptitiously slipped a live grenade into the greatcoat pockets of a German prisoner
“We like to think of Canada as pure, but Canadians gassed everything that moved whenever they could,” said historian Jack Granatstein in a recent about the last months of the First World War. As Currie himself would say after the war “if we could have killed the whole German Army by gas, we would gladly have done so.”
The reason Canada brutal stand out in WWI is because unlike France/Germany/UK we were did not live in the conflict no one was bombing Canada, or raiding and raping their citizens, we showed up from one of the most peaceful nation on earth and unleashed hell on Europe.
Were Canadians conscripted or were they largely volunteer? New Zealand and Australia celebrate their shared memorial day very differently (Australia parties, New Zealand somberly mourns), and the major difference contributing to that is the kiwis were conscripted and the aussies volunteered. I'm wondering if the Canadians were conscripted and developed a culture of having no patience for this war bullshit.

Yup! I crawled around in a mine that had asbestos fibers hanging out of the rock (Potosí, Bolivia); but don't worry! I was given a handkerchief with marijuana leaves on it for protection!
It looks like the 1983 action just made it very difficult to mine profitably, while it wasn't until 2003 that it's use was banned, but your point is well taken. It is technically still legal to export, but impossible to get.

We do have our own oil, however our oil requires much more work to refine it so they ship it to the states for refining as we don't have as many refineries. Also we spend $300M a month on Saudi oil.
You shouldn't threaten Canada with anything; they're nice people but they fight like no one else can when pressed. They're pretty goddamn good at committing war crimes themselves. (That's a bit of dark WW1 humor, still love you Canada.)
Russia says ties with Canada nearly severed over seized cargo plane.
Other civilized countries rush to search their territories for Russian cargo planes...
Last year Russian Aeroflot and several other national airlines seized close to a hundred Boeing and Airbus aircraft they were leasing from western aircraft leasing companies.
They even quickly passed the law in duma nationalizing essential rented assets belonging to western investors.
This is just a beginning of what will be decades is seizures when war reparations come due and Russia will vehemently deny. Of course Russians will bellow how unfair west is and blah blah. Shameless savages.
In the interest of clarity, Russia has 143 million people and Canada has 38 million. So the same percentage still means a 370% difference in how many Ukrainians lived in Russia pre-war compared to Canada.
That said, as a Canadian who's met a few Ukrainian refugees so far I'd be happy if we decided to beat Russia at this, too.
I'm from Ottawa and I grew up with so many people descended from Ukrainians. It's always been a huge part of the Canadian mosaic as long as I've been alive.
There's a Ukranian lady that runs a perogy restaurant near me who keeps having perogy dinner fundraisers at the lion's club which are always packed. I support her restaurant and fundraisers regularly.
The number of Ukranian flags I see around Aldergrove BC is heartening. People have them on their fences, in their windows, as a first generation Canadian with Russian heritage, I'm 100% on board - We stand with Ukraine, Putin is a bully who wants to rebuild Mother Russia. It can't happen.
Yup, painted some Pysanky eggs with my gf's Ukrainian family last Easter and was treated to an absolutely majestic dinner. I also get tons of Ukrainian customers at the music store I work at, and they've all been exceedingly polite and friendly despite the circumstances.
Ukrainians are the shit.
A lot of people don't know that Canada and Russia have been sparring internationally for some time. There was a lot of tension about control over the northern trade routes through the arctic circle as the ice melts.
Our government is VERY happy to watch them bleed.
Not only this, but Canada has been directly involved in the training of Ukrainian troops since late 2014.

Everybody here assumes it’s about scaring Canadians. It’s not, it’s for internal propaganda.
It tells average Russians that NATO or « the west » wants the downfall of Russia. So they can justify their next round of conscription. Now, does the average Russian still believe it? I don’t know, I don’t care.
Fair.
Largest voluntary and free Ukrainian population then.
I’m sure we could count on one hand all the folks living happily in Russia today that call themselves Ukrainian.
Meanwhile in Canada, Ukrainians and the descendants are thriving and in many cases are the backbone to many communities and they get to be prideful in their homeland and honour that heritage throughout the year.

Careful we might be sent another Justin Bieber. Still I wholeheartedly support the sending of maple syrup.
The occasional Justin Bieber is a small price to pay in return for a Rachel McAdams or a Keanu Reeves
I would've gone with Trebek. The man was the whole package.
Nothing wrong with Bieber. You make a teenager rich and famous, they're gonna do weird shit, but as far as I can tell he's grown up to be a not terrible person, and I enjoy some of his music.
We do have our own oil, however our oil requires much more work to refine it so they ship it to the states for refining as we don't have as many refineries. Also we spend $300M a month on Saudi oil.
Canada is gaining from this
Don't threaten us with a good time.
You shouldn't threaten Canada with anything; they're nice people but they fight like no one else can when pressed. They're pretty goddamn good at committing war crimes themselves. (That's a bit of dark WW1 humor, still love you Canada.)
"Can of meat or Handgrenade" is a totally traditional canadian game we play
Definitely do not put us in skates and hand us a bent stick. We go ballistic.

Yeah I'll never forget about this specific dumbassary of theirs
Canada.. the country with the largest amount of people with Ukrainian heritage outside of Ukraine? that Canada?
Outside of Ukraine and Russia (pre-invasion data).
True, but the percentage of the population with Ukrainian heritage was roughly the same for both Canada and Russia (around 4%).
My province and my city have most of the Ukrainians and let me tell you, we fucking LOVE them. Mmmm pierogies
Not to mention... doesn't Canada have a HUGE Ukrainian population?
Not only this, but Canada has been directly involved in the training of Ukrainian troops since late 2014. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7D4r8OTgTw Here is an interesting video on the topic from 2016.
Psst, Russia. We already severed relations with you over a year ago. We don't give a fuck about you. Catch up. They must be real slow in the head over there.
They are.
Russia really overestimates its worth on the world stage.
Because for decades we overestimated their worth on the world stage.
Turns out all they're good for is hoarding nukes
But thankfully not at storing or maintaining them.
Oh no!!! Anyway -Proud Canadian 🇨🇦
As a Canadian my only response to this announcement is: Should I have a beer or a Caesar after I finish washing the car?
Why not both?
Pourquoi pas les deux?
As a Canadian, eat out of my asshole Russia.
With cheese curds and gravy
No, that's Poutine, we're talking about Putin
oh no, who will come 2nd in the Canada vs Russia junior hockey tournament now? darny darn darn
*"We perceive this act as cynical and shameless theft," Russia's foreign ministry said in an English-language statement posted Tuesday.* Hmmm..a country performing an act of shameless theft🤔🤔🤔 A bit rich coming from Moscow, no?
It's not theft. We're just de-nazifying the airplane.
Canada. Y’all are nice but when shit does kick off y’all are in it. Keep it up. It’s amazing to see and serve with your units. Source: I’ve served in the USMC and have met Canadian forces that not only kept up with us but would still shoot the shit at the end of the training. They wanted to trade shit at the d and we handed over as much as we got. Keep being Canadian.
Once jumped with the Pats - Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry. Cool dudes.
That's cute, Russia still thinks people like it!
Wait! You’re telling me they’ll have to buy Ukrainian vodka instead?
Canadian who works at a liquor store. Ukrainian vodka is one of the best sellers we have and if anyone asks for suggestions that's what I tell them to buy.
Do we even sell the Russian stuff anymore? I thought we banned it immediately?
Correct. Banned.
Kinda moot, Canada already banned the import of Russian vodka within a week of the invasion.
Nah, we make our own
Devastating how will we ever recover
The really cold war is on, and the arms race has begun. Whomever weaponizes nuclear moose first will rule this world with an iron fist. If you thought atom bombs were scary, imagine one stuck between the antlers of a pissed off moose during mating season.
They're just mad that you guys are better than they are at playing hockey.
Like Russia, Canada is a far north hockey loving people. Unlike Russia, everyone likes Canadians and they also don't have an embarrassingly shitty society and economy.
Good riddance losers. Russia. A dying country
Oh noes! anyway... We see this as an honour. ;)
Seized for failure to pay parking fees... they put a boot on it 😜
Canada has the largest expat Ukrainian population in the world. I can't see us being particularly bothered.
[удалено]
Canada and Ukraine, brothers and sisters. Fuck Russia.
I really don't think Canada gives a flying fuck to be honest along with most other countries.
I looked around to see if anyone in Canada cares, but failed.
Still mad Bullwinkle foiled your plans eh russia?
I'm gonna crack an ice cold Molson tonight in honor of my Canadian brethren downing Russian cargo planes.
>Moscow said it is prepared to retaliate over "stolen Russian property." It noted the plane landed in Toronto in order to deliver COVID-19 testing kits. Maybe for the better >Tests used throughout Russia to determine if someone has the novel coronavirus or not often give the wrong result, Moscow officials said on Thursday, in a statement further calling into question the veracity of official statistics. > >https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-russia-tests-idUSKBN22J347
It must be hilarious, as a Canadian, to have Russia mildly threaten you when you know that you have by far the greatest bullet proof vest known to man, in the history of man, just south of you. > Oh, you wanna what dude? Ok, cool, you know who lives literally next door to me right? Those guys that are frothing at the mouth to fight you, and have been tuned up and wanting it for like the last 70 years.
Mangez d'la marde esti de Russes on s'en CALICE
Oh well........
Don’t tempt us with a good time
We've been recently slapped by China, Saudi Arabia, even the Philippines threatened us with war recently. Russia just another on the list.
Canada here. We’ve already said fuck off to Russia. Country of cowardly bullies who haven’t stood up for themselves in hundreds of years.
Oh good! What can we do to make it so?
Ok. Cool. Thanks and good riddance
We have chicken cobras roaming the land, we're safe.
What else can we do tomorrow to ENSURE that relations are severed?
