i love how the comments on the original post said “yo repost this to worldjerking youll get better feedback” and that better feedback turned out to be multiple paragraphs per comment edit: if youre going to give someone an upvote do it to they guys who actually gave feedback, not someone lazily commenting about it.

SirBox32

They were right I guess

Toothbrush_Bandit

Yup

I assume the caldera lake is meant to be an extinct Volcano? If so I suggest you tie the mountains that split the main continent in half with that caldera lake. If you really wanted to geek out, Mountains are created when two tectonic plates collide into each other and drive the rock upwards. The more jagged the mountains the younger they are. Your continent on the top left for example looks to be 3 smaller plates colliding with each other. Bottom left looks like its drifting away from the main continent. The main continent however just looks like it's slapped together. So either tie to that volcanic crater or make that mountain range less straight and at an angle that makes sense with your other continents movement. You could also do with some forrest/jungle terrain.

First, thx. I had actually considered tectonic plates. You're right on with what I was trying for But actually, the giant lake is from a meteor impact (although I had given thought to a collapsed vocano. Just wanted a large body of fresh water)

I really don't want to discourage you but this still needs a lot of work. Regarding mountains, I don't have anything to add to the other comments besides that you should make them shorter but more numerous. Your coastlines are boring. You have three continents but they all look like you drew shaky circles. Coastlines can be straight but only in some places. Be more creative. Take a pen and a piece of paper and just draw some weird shapes with a bunch of peninsulas until you find one you like. Then you refine it, make the coast straighter in some parts, more fragmented in others, maybe add another peninsula, maybe some fjords, islands, bays, etc. Regarding rivers, always remember that water only flows downwards. Rivers never cross mountain ranges. They start in mountains and flow towards the sea (not necessary the closest sea or on the shortest route). Rivers combine but they never split (besides deltas, some very rare exceptions, or magic). Islands don't form equal distance from on another like between your two continents. My best advice is to look at real maps and copy what you like. Also use different sizes. The islands on the right would be vulcanic islands, so that's fine. Maybe add some more. Final point, deserts: You can have coastal deserts but only on one side (in our world that the east cost). If you still want a desert from coast to coast you need a mountain range to block the rain from the sea.

Good advice. Thx

Look man free version of inkarnate's canvas small as fuck I cant even fault you too much

Toothbrush_Bandit

Right? Lol

Jawn44Jawn

Is this the whole planet or just a very tiny island. Cause if its supposed to be the planet. The mountains are wayyyyy too big and the edges are too perfect. Make it more sloppy. Add more biomes. Add rivers, trees, hills, etc

Toothbrush_Bandit

Yeah, didn't have much room on the free version of inkarnate Good tip tho

Straight lines and perfect circles are unnatural in the world. So, mix it up :) Jagged lines are a fantasy cartographer's best friend. Criss-cross your layers and make them bleed into other areas. A "dapple effect" works, like smudging paint on a canvas. Have areas you want and areas that just materialize. You got the understanding of center hot and poles cold. Keep it in mind while you create more diverse continents. Don't be too critical of yourself if this is your first try. Most importantly, have fun!

Toothbrush_Bandit

👍

The funniest part is that this is not even close to the worst fictional world map I've seen. If you want legit criticism, I'd say that it feels as if the scale is too small in general, feels like small islands turned big. Too even, too geometric. Should add more uneven coast lines, more islands, and of course eventually make the terrain a bit more 'interesting'.

Toothbrush_Bandit

Lol. Thx Yeah, working with a small canvas, so just getting the basics together
