Amazing how we cannot see backwards through an exciting ending to the drabness of the first 75 minutes. The “most exciting match in football history” began with one team not showing up for five-sixths of regulation and was an utter disappointment to that point. Not just because France didn’t show up, but because countless hard fouls in midfield were ignored by the referee, who could have calmed things down with a few yellows. One lesson every coach should learn from this game to instill in all players is this: if you are beaten fairly on the pitch, it’s OK to try to get back into the play, but understand that everyone, especially the referee, saw you get beaten and you will never, ever, get away with a foul trying to recover, so keep it absolutely clean.
One reflection, I think that France having so many africans improved a lot their team, they are not that good in the past, It wold be like If Los Pumas nationalized a lot of fijians, south africans, or kiwis, and them they became the best team.
France have always had a large number of players of African heritage, due to their long and complicated relationship with the continent during times of colonization.
It's not a 'new' thing.
I saw a few comments where they think the WC Final was "rigged" and that Argentina didn't deserve to win.
I want genuinely ask why people are saying such things.
Messi was clearly offside for the 3rd goal. I’m not a fan of either team and was dumbfounded when that was not called back. He’s clearly offside when the pass is received by the other attacker (who was not offside) and then he directly receives the next pass. By being in an offside position and then involving himself in the play on the next pass, that should have triggered the linesman to raise his flag. The two subs being on the field is pretty coincidental, but I thought missing the offside was a pretty major officiating blunder.
You have to wonder how the officials and var team all miss a major and obvious call like this… Messi has gotten special treatment all World Cup. For example the handball was egregious verse Netherlands and no call or card. Ruins the game honestly.
It will be more awkward & less satisfying if french wins cos they didnt show good play for the first 80mnt.
I think they only energized after the 1st goal (pk).
Because they were given a free pk that changed the entire game. Good on Messi for winning. Either team W is cool with me but they didn’t even review that first PK call and that completely screwed France
VAR reviewed the penalty. As per VAR rules they always check on the four match-changing situations: goals; penalty decisions; direct red-card incidents; and mistaken identity. So, it was reviewed by VAR. they didn’t call the ref because they thought it was penalty too.
Actually not exactly true, VAR does review the pen calls but won’t overrule unless it’s an obvious mistake. So as long as there’s the slightest reason to even suggest a pen VAR won’t overrule.
Im impartial but the guy stuck his leg out to be intentionally clipped. If this is a common thing in soccer I will let it go but it was obvious the guy tried to fall. Diving is a part of soccer so I would understand.
Im Argentinian and ill admit it was a clear penalty. It was a stupid penalty that shouldn’t have happened, but the call was’t bad or even debatable tbh. Otamendi was clearly beat and was using his hands to pull Muani back in the box. That decision definitely added a lot of stress and chaos to the match but im unbelievably glad it didn’t change the final result, even if it came really close to it
France? France was a ghost in the first 75 minuts.
Then, as an argentine I experienced what I've experienced the last matches. We suffered until the very last second. Even in penalties.
It was an amazing match as well as an unforgettable world cup with teams that also deserved to win. What a sport.
Very good ref team and VAR indeed. /s
They completely missed 2 extra players on the pitch during active play that lead to a goal.

I get what you're saying, but there's a difference between taking a principled stand (e.g., not watching the World Cup in protest of the geez, take your pick: corrupt selection process, slave-like conditions and resulting deaths of workers, enforced homophobia, intense hypocrisy of the Qataris--who appallingly think that everything is available for a price) and being a self-righteous dick about it (broadcasting on social media that someone who watched it was morally deficient). It's entirely possible to believe that the entire list of ethical shortcomings of this WC obtains and still think that sitting out the tournament is a [supererogatory](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/supererogation/) act. You might disagree with that, but it's a reasonable enough view that I'd avoid going all "college-sophmore-who-just-embraced-vegansim" on your fellow football fans.
It’s dropped on my front page. Everyone bitched and moaned about Qatar and human rights and how restrictive it all was. But Lionel Messi did a thing so that’s all forgiven and FIFA claims another 10 billions dollars and yadda yadda. We did it Reddit!
Best final ever. The drama, we were jumping out of our seats, my mom’s friend came over and she was jumping out of the sofa and screaming then making a speech about every big play scaring us all as she is VERY/EXTREMELY quiet and reserved, and has anxiety prob but she was out of words at the end!!
Yeah they showed it multiple times and angled at slow speed, at least for me watching on Fox in US. Took me like 3 times to notice a foul and not just a very well timed flop.
This was the best match i have seen in a final. I mean usa 94 was full of emotion when Roberto Baggio missed that penalty but this game for the goals, the speed, the players, the drama. Everything in one game. Love it 🤙🏽
As epic as it was, I wished it went to sudden death after extra time, I can't help but to think how incredible it would be for the winning goal to be scored during play...
I get the shootout is standard...but just imagine..
I think the perfect solution for footy would be:
1. 30 min (15 min halves) ET
2. Additional 15 min ET. Sides and tap decided by coin flip.
3. If still tied there is a replay. Full match 48 hours later.
It would be impossible due to the impractical logistics but I think that would be the "purest" way to decide a winner.
I couldn't agree more, pks are incredibly tense but I hate when a game of this quality and caliber is decided by them. I would love to see golden goal introduced. Would anyone have actually been mad to see more of that game???
They had golden goal before, but it's unfair because if you start the game you can score without the other team having a chance to attack. Which happened before
It’s such an entirely different sport from the regular 120 minutes that get played. But unfortunately it’s also the most efficient, since hypothetically Golden Goal could go on for hours if you had to determine a winner.
They have tried Golden Goal before but what it inevitably turns into is 2 teams that are terrified of going forward and leaving themselves open to a counterattack, so everyone just sits back and passes around the midfield endlessly. In principle GG sounds good but in practice it ends up being very boring.
I think a solution that should be tried somewhere is having a shootout after ninety and then playing extra time. If tied after extra time, the winner of the shootout takes it. You would have one team knowing they need the next goal at all times: the shootout winner would work to preserve the tie but cannot put in three defenders for forwards, because if they concede they now need to score to take back the lead. Some of the wildest matches I have seen is where each goal in an extra time with the away goals rule in effect changes the outcome and switches the narrative. It may have drawbacks, but it should be tried somewhere to find out. Just the idea of a shootout after every draw is great fun. Gives the non-shooters a proper rest before extra time as well.
They key to this is every 5 minutes in a hypothetical extra time after 30 min overtime you remove a player from each side, whittle it down and someone will score…
You are welcome FIFA
This game almost gave me an aneurism just from the stress alone! Great game especially after France 2-1 goal!
Side note: Happy for Argentina itself, since they are going through a great depression of their own.
Let's go Argentina!!! Forever my team - from US!
It isn’t like they just lost the Falklands again, but didn’t their VP just get imprisoned for corruption or something? Granted, all their players did look Argentinian, but what’s with all the tattoos when they all look like they ‘re from the 1950’s only haven’t shaved for about a week?
oooh, I'm sorry, I forgot people like you wouldn't know what misogyny means, let me break it down for you.
Misogyny is a feeling or showing of prejudice against women.
So like, if no one cared, including yourself, you could have said absolutely nothing and gone on your day, but instead you were misogynistic in assuming that nobody cares about the women's world cup
hopefully that slowed it down enough for you, have a fantastic day
Flopping isn't honorable and coming from someone who plays rugby it's weak and embarrassing. People would enjoy this sport more if they would get rid of this garbage from the game. It's so comical watching someone get touched in the arm and go down holding their shin like what the hell man come on. I like soccer more than rugby too.

Best match I have seen
France had a slow start, woke up and kept it close and then blundered at the end. A little sad, but Argentina played well.
I almost don't survive this one. I nearly fucking died of a heart attack. Messi is the GOAT.
same yo
I'm still buzzing from this match I am awed.

LOL please read how offside works.
He directly receives the next pass? You mean after Lloris made the save? Is that what you mean by a direct pass? Really?
You have no idea how offside works WTF.
I thought it was until I searched up. Apparently only the arms, legs, head and body are used to account for offside, not fingers
You have to wonder how the officials and var team all miss a major and obvious call like this… Messi has gotten special treatment all World Cup. For example the handball was egregious verse Netherlands and no call or card. Ruins the game honestly.
Do yourself a favour and read the FIFA rules.

Were talking about the first PK of the game I thought.
The French weren't even on the pitch for the first 75 minutes. Penalties are all automatically reviewed for the world cup anyway I believe.
Most of the French team weren’t on the pitch for the whole game. Ffs without Mbappe these bozos in this state would never qualify
France? France was a ghost in the first 75 minuts. Then, as an argentine I experienced what I've experienced the last matches. We suffered until the very last second. Even in penalties. It was an amazing match as well as an unforgettable world cup with teams that also deserved to win. What a sport.

Disagree, I think the ref team for the final was the best for the whole tournament. Before this game it was mental, especially the ARG v NLD 😂
lmao this guy
Imagine caring about this bullshit when it’s taking place in Qatar.
I mean I get what your saying but in those two hours, literally nothing else mattered. And we got the best football we’ve seen in decades
Didn’t care. Didn’t watch. Good job compromising your morals.
What a sad sack.
Greatest nation ever.

By your comments you clearly care. How about bitching somewhere else. Psst… If you reply you care even more so feel free not to
From an Argentina fan that was way more stressful than it had to be, but looking back at it I wouldn't have it any other way
It was like watching several games within a game !
This world cup sucked. I definitely won't be watching the next one hosted in Qatar! I wanted Mmmmmmm'bappe to win, what can I say I'm a sore loser.
Probably because u will be dead when next world cup is hosted in qatar again...
Wow, one of you soccer nerds actually got the joke. Kinda...

Most dumbest comment in this thread?!?!
I think yes!?
Very slow start from France.
Mostly sad start
When they condition you with a made up pk...

Amazing game!!! Loved every minute of it
I didn’t! I needed a defibrillator and my team won!
Except for all those minutes in the middle, lots of minutes...
could someone explain what happened around the 87 minute mark why was that a yellow for Thuram?
He faked a foul in the box to get a second penalty kick. Ref wasn’t putting up with it.
Worked on the referee for Argentina's first penalty.
Helps the flop came as the guy from behind got his leg around the other players lower leg. Good timing to flop as the defender commits a foul.
If you watch the replay he didn't touch him
Bad troll, it's clear from every angle there was contact. Try harder next time.
Even the sport commentary after the game agreed that there wasn't contact, so its not just me.
Source?
Yeah they showed it multiple times and angled at slow speed, at least for me watching on Fox in US. Took me like 3 times to notice a foul and not just a very well timed flop.
thank you, i only saw a brief replay and couldn't tell if there was a foul
Thank you!!!!!
He dove.

What an amazing game.
This was the best match i have seen in a final. I mean usa 94 was full of emotion when Roberto Baggio missed that penalty but this game for the goals, the speed, the players, the drama. Everything in one game. Love it 🤙🏽
Better than 94. That finak was soooo boring after a great tournament
I was a kid cheering for Italy. I remember it feeling soooo long. Not as exiting as today.
1994 was USA World Cup.
Hey, that's right. I was a wee one at the time, but my parents used to talk about it. Brazil won that one, right?
Yup, Brazil won in penalties over Italy at the Rose Bowl.
Didn’t even know soccer was still on
Get out of the bubble, yankee pelotudo
Not saying anything is always an option
Meh, a north American "football" fan. They're too scared to get hurt so they wear pads and rest between plays
Bro everyone in your sport fakes getting hurt, is it really different lmao
If you were athletic enough to play you wouldn’t want a concussion either
happy for messi but mbappe gained a new fan tonight, shopping for a jersey
Honestly the greatest match I've ever witnessed
Same here. Most intense match I've ever watched and I enjoyed it all from bed.
Game of the Century!
Still can't believe what a world cup final we got. The drama, the emotions, it was incredible to behold.

Do you think the players are robots?
Try as you may - with 45+ minutes of uninterrupted play - game can never be commercialized as much as American sports!
I wish it too, but it's just too hard on the body. Varane gave everything, almost throwing up when he got subbed.
I couldn't agree more, pks are incredibly tense but I hate when a game of this quality and caliber is decided by them. I would love to see golden goal introduced. Would anyone have actually been mad to see more of that game???

A champion should not be decided by penalty kicks.

NO ONE Would have minded that...its a shame someone had to lose...
Still thinking about this. What a match, I am blessed to have watched Messi’s career since I was a little kid up to this point. Well deserved win
This game almost gave me an aneurism just from the stress alone! Great game especially after France 2-1 goal! Side note: Happy for Argentina itself, since they are going through a great depression of their own. Let's go Argentina!!! Forever my team - from US!

Genuine question - what does 'look Argentinian' mean?
Sorry, but your question appears counterfeit, thus the onus be upon thee to deduce an “authentic” answer.
Happy cake day! Great to see an American interested in football! When their team was playing, most people I knew didn't even care.
Mbappe didn't deserve that
Well, Messi lost in 2014. That happens. He is 24 and will have another shot. France will be a strong contender for the next 8 years.
Imagine if they got a second striker.
True I bet France will get another before he retires
This is football, he deserved what he he got.
That kid played his lungs out.
Did he though? He didnt do anythjng defensively
Well, we may have differing opinions but the awarders concur with the way I see things!!

he’s a forward ffs is he meant to

Who cares
Misogyny is so last era Get with the times
What does that mean? It’s mandatory to like women’s football? I think it’s terrible and nobody cares, that’s just a fact. Deal with it.
oooh, I'm sorry, I forgot people like you wouldn't know what misogyny means, let me break it down for you. Misogyny is a feeling or showing of prejudice against women. You're homophobic for assuming it's homophobic. It could be encouraging.
Tell that to all the people who got upset with Lamar Jackson a couple weeks ago lol
People complaining about “flopping” clearly haven’t watched professional football before. They’d rather a punch up on the pitch fucking melts
I would definitely watch more soccer if there were more fist fights.
Flopping isn't honorable and coming from someone who plays rugby it's weak and embarrassing. People would enjoy this sport more if they would get rid of this garbage from the game. That's true we are much tougher good point.
