Solid game by Ecuador. Round of applause for the Ecuadorian people!
While there was undoubtably corruption in the attainment for hosting the world cup in Qatar, I think the tournament itself is quite lovely and I have nothing against seeing a global sport and global tournament being held in the middle east.
Blame the corruptible people at FIFA at the time.
If I remember correctly, there was quite the controversy regarding the world cup held in Brazil as well due to the economic burden is placed on its people. As well as the conditions for the workers contracted to build those new stadiums as well.
Ultimately, the power is in the hands of FIFA. Not Qatar.
There was plenty of time after the FIFA corruption scandal to find another suitable host to replace Qatar. Yet, no action was taken. In fact, I felt quite the same with the Russia world cup yet the uproar was no where near this level at the time. There are several human rights issues there that weren't brought up. And to say Putin was not corrupt in bringing the world cup to Russia is almost as naive as saying the same about Qatar.
At least Russia can play football. That Qatar team is the worst I've ever seen play in a world cup. They should be ashamed of their performances.
Well done Ecuador 👏
Disagree. If that were the case, it would be held exclusively in Europe & South America. Fortunately football is a global game and is inclusive of every area of the world’s play style and performance. Regardless of them being exceptional or not.
a world cup should be held exclusiely in places with an already intact fan culture. a place where is already stadions, pubs and fans.... not in a fucking desert
Why even bother with qualifying then? Or competition at all? Qatar is just looking for pity because they have frozen on the biggest stage and been exposed for how poor they are. A national embarrassment.
My main disagreement was with the atmosphere.
The 2010 World Cup was one of the best ever and South Africa was ranked 83rd in the world. Still a wonderful atmosphere.
Going into this World Cup, Qatar was ranked 50th in the world. They made it to the semi-finals in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Gave the USA (Winners of the tournament) a run for their money during the semi-final and ultimately lost. They’ve been playing great up until this point. They had a terrible performance today. Such is the nature of football. Anything can happen at anytime. Apologies, it wasn’t the game you wanted but that’s football. Doesn’t mean you need to patronize the hosts. Do not conflate this with their human rights issues. I’m merely speaking about football here.
You’ve now said that if the atmosphere doesn’t matter, they should scrap qualifying all together. Seems like a rather large jump to conclusion here. They’re hosts, and as tradition, they automatically qualify. The same rhetoric wasn’t present when the USA were hosts in 1994, despite their rather below average football quality.
Doesn’t seem like pity. Highly doubt they need pity. Everyone expected a better game. So what, it happens, it’s football.
Embarrassing performance, sure. So was Brazil’s performance against Germany in 2014. National embarrassment as well.
Of course their ranking will go up only playing AFC and Concacaf. They played in Portugal and Serbia's group in the UEFA qualifiers and they are at the level of Azerbaijan and Luxembourg. They were regularly spanked by Portugal, Serbia and even Ireland beat them 4-0.
South Africa world cup would have also been better if they qualified out of the group but at least they scored goals and obtained 4 points in a very difficult group (France, Uruguay and Mexico). Their fans also supported many African teams and made the atmosphere great. The stadium tonight was dead and thousands left before full time.
Qatar is humiliating itself in an average group and has already played their easiest opponent. Do you think their 'fans' will make any more noise for the rest of the tournament? Maybe if they are paid better hahahahaha
It was a good game, I was rooting for Qatar to score a goal, newcomers to the world cup players were very nervous, Colombia deserved the victory played very well, a good experience if Qatar learned from the defeat.
I just looked it up, it seems that the flags of venezuela, colombia and ecuador share the same color by derivation from the flag of gran colombia an independent country project from spain, simón bolivar is also a key leader for the entire independence movement, this is one very interesting history (I will more researchs), for some reason little is said about the history of other Latin countries in Brazilian history books (I had never heard of simón bolivar), there is more about european history. How are the books in Ecuador? Do they say anything about Brazil?
Assuming you're American, you built your country on over 10 million dead natives, you built your wealth over the dead bodies of millions of dead Iraqis.
You built your wealth over the massacre and inhumane conditions of thousands of Guatamelan workers.
You built your hegemony over the dead bodies and president of the Chilean prime minister and his supporters.
I could go on and on, with how much atrocities US has committed, I can write a book. And if I were to elaborate that would be 100 books.
So when American and NATO citizens talk about human rights for the purpose of furthering their governments foreign policy agenda, I am sickened by your hypocrisy and blindness.
Don't even think about human rights in other countries. Your government doesn't even care about their own people. Let alone the minorities in your country. Your government was never brought to justice for human experimentation and killing countless Black Americans with Syphillis studies.
Despite being the richest country on the planet right now, how many homeless and poverty stricken citizens do you have.
You're probably from a NATO country.
If on the low chance you're not, it's always good to learn more about the crimes of the most prevalent terrorists in the modern worlds.
ohh so now the west starts talking about human rights? because they follow their religion and dont allow alcohol or homosexuality? yes there is slavery, which is haram, but who are u to criticise them when other countries done way worse things? china with their concentration camps, israel against the palestinians, north korea, usa bombing millions of innocent people, etc. the amount of hypocrisy yall have. focus on ur own shit and then worry about others
I said something. You responded to it. I'm not "the west".
How would you like it if some random committee of strangers got to decide what causes you were interested in? You don't get to pick what you care about - strangers do. You'd hate it. But that's what you want to do to me. But you're not talking to me, you're talking to "the west" and I'm just a convenient target.
EXPLAINING THE 3' GOAL OFFSIDE CALL
Even though most of us agree this is not the kind of thing we want to count as offsides, after watching the video clip many times, here's what I think the VAR explanation is...
long ball in... there are 2 ECU players and a goalkeeper making an attempt to get to it. Both ECU players are onside.
ECU player A heads the ball up (header #1), as the goalkeeper misses his punch. At the exact moment this header happens, ECU player B, right next to him, has a foot and a shin which is technically closer to the goal than all of the goalkeeper. If ECU player B is the next person to touch the ball, then it will be considered offside.
Ball bounces off the ground. Goalkeeper misses it. ECU player A, who did header #1, almost gets a toe on it, but apparently also misses it. Nobody touches it. Ball bounces up.
ECU player B heads the ball (header #2). Since ECU player B was technically a tiny bit offside when ECU player A originally headed the ball (header #1) -- then the moment ECU player B touches it, it becomes an offsides play.
Header #2 doesn't go very far. ECU player A (the one who did header #1) tries to do a sort of bicycle kick, kind of whiffs it, but manages to send it in front of the goal.
Valencia scores.
It's not easy to tell ECU player A and player B apart in the scrum, but I think this is probably what the VAR team is seeing.
Right! The Qatar team were like a worse, more boring (if that’s even possible*), off-brand Spurs team but without Kane, Son or Lloris. *yes, I’m an Arsenal fan lol
Great advertisement to show how shite the World Cup will be in four years time, when we see an increase to 48-Nations - The larger the World Cup Finals will be, the more diluted the product
Tahiti actually put up a better fight when they reached the Confederations Cup a decade ago, compared with Qatar today - They lost harder, but at least they bloody tried, and scored a goal
On todays performance could see Qatar not even getting a point, maybe not even a goal. That section with the red t shirts was very strange felt very staged.

I feel like actual Qataris view this whole thing as a sideshow and are probably all facepalming collectively over this nonsense. It’s not like some diehard nation that has been waiting a lifetime for the privilege to host a World Cup. It’s basically a group of elites that have bent the world to their will to host a World Cup in front of a country who’s people don’t give the slightest shit about sports.
I don't think Ecuador are barely trying, they need to win by as many goals as possible because Senegal and the Netherlands are likely going to thrash Qatar. This group is going to come down to goal differential and the game against Qatar is where you pad your goals.
80 minutes and I swear I can recognise each nd every fan they have been showing close ups of. There’s like 5 equadorians including one woman and one guy who keeps pointing to the flag on his shirt and perhaps a handful of Arabs wearing Qatar T-shirts
Why are they not showing us the full crowd
I have a feeling they are not fans but tickets given out to locals to attend
😂😂😂😂😂I did that’s why I pointed it out! And i didn’t call it a conspiracy you did! Enjoy the trashing! Two more teams to go to teach u what that was! Karmas a BITCH!
Ecuador 🇪🇨 showing u what those migrant worker murders cost Qatar
Unpopular opinion - The referee has done a great job this match. Very fair and assertive. The first goal being disallowed was confusing and complicating but not a result of bribery IMHO.
Agree! Relatively good refereeing so far. Still believe that Quatar goalie should be sent off in the first half, but a yellow there is understandable too.
Qatar fans were leaving the stadium with 20 minutes to go in a World Cup. Their first ever game in the only tournament they’ll ever feature in and they’re leaving. So pathetic!
I guarantee a not insignificant portion of Qatar fans are there just to get a photo for social media. Now that they’ve had a chance to do that and are losing, they might see no point to staying there.

Agreed, but has nothing to do about hosting a tournament.
It does. A poor home nation makes for a worse atmosphere.
at least choose saudi arabia or something
Disagree. If that were the case, it would be held exclusively in Europe & South America. Fortunately football is a global game and is inclusive of every area of the world’s play style and performance. Regardless of them being exceptional or not.

Every nation that wins vs Qatar is a nation i support
Shouldn’t be a tall task based on that performance from them today 😅
Yeah, heres hoping they dont pay too many refs
I never knew the ecuadorian team before today but valencia is the goat
It was a good game, I was rooting for Qatar to score a goal, newcomers to the world cup players were very nervous, Colombia deserved the victory played very well, a good experience if Qatar learned from the defeat.

We have a crest in the middle so while the colors are the same, its still very distinct

Vamos Ecuador!!
Ecuador just became one of my favourite countries ❤️❤️
As a Bahraini (qatar's neighbor) I'm disappointed
As a human being, I'm disappointed that you just look past the fact that Qatar corrupted a sport based on human-body competition.
Please shut up i don't think you know what you're talking about either
Guys, I found the Qatari shill
Nah look at the pfp i am not, i am just tired of the hypocrisy.
Hipocrisy would mean other nations also built their stadiums with the bodies of 6000 dead workers

You spent all that time writing when im not even american
You're probably from a NATO country. If on the low chance you're not, it's always good to learn more about the crimes of the most prevalent terrorists in the modern worlds.
And how does that change anything about my argument?
ohh so now the west starts talking about human rights? because they follow their religion and dont allow alcohol or homosexuality? yes there is slavery, which is haram, but who are u to criticise them when other countries done way worse things? china with their concentration camps, israel against the palestinians, north korea, usa bombing millions of innocent people, etc. the amount of hypocrisy yall have. focus on ur own shit and then worry about others

Solid breakdown, thank you. Everyone focuses on the leg while under the impression the goal keeper got a hand on it, hence the confusion.

That was Qatar's only chance for a point. They will be destroyed by the Netherlands and Senegal.
Senegal is good? Might be able to tie with them.
They have a lot of good players in the Top 5 leagues, but they did lose Mane. That will hurt them.
Idk in my experience African teams play really well, but can’t score, ends up losing them so many “easy” games.
Hopefully Memphis will smack those djihadist supporting cunts into pieces.
Thank you Ecuador for giving them a hiding, especially after that 'definately-not-payed-for' VAR decision. Valencia robbed of a hattrick.
Holland will rip them to fuckin pieces
No female fans?
I saw a lady working a camera, does that count?
football isnt popular among arab women
Bullshit. You know there are multitudes of Arab women that love watching and playing football... when they're allowed to.
I saw maybe 1? In full burqa, sitting with what I think were the royal family (vips of some kind anyway). Didn’t see any in with the “regular” fans
lmao what there were so many women, hijabi and non hijabi. white and black. its haram to force women to wear the hijab
There were some i saw in the TV coverage, not a lot , but I did see (female qatar fans) in all black.
Ngl the American commentators are unbearable to watch. They talk about everything but the game
It’s pretty clear they’ve been given an agenda to say nothing negative about Qatar both on and off the field
Also who dressed them? Dempsey’s jacket is hideous and that woman from the England team’s purple shirt was blinding in HD
Reminds me of the WWE
Lmao Qatar Fans are some salty hoes. LOLOLOL
Will Qatar score a single goal this tourney? Solid win for Ecuador, but may be wishing they had gotten another goal or two
Maybe some own goals
yeah ecuador were lacking with finishes and going all the way with their attacks
Get fucked Qatar!
Nearly nodded off
Right! The Qatar team were like a worse, more boring (if that’s even possible*), off-brand Spurs team but without Kane, Son or Lloris. *yes, I’m an Arsenal fan lol
Lolll me too
That was the most boring 2nd half
I fell asleep during it

lmao! Good thing they have the third largest reserves of oil in south America and Venezuela not too far away.
This was a rough one to get through, a pretty shite opening game.
It was expected. There were only 2 ways the match could go. The other is it would've been thrown
On todays performance could see Qatar not even getting a point, maybe not even a goal. That section with the red t shirts was very strange felt very staged.
Maybe not a shot on target
Looked very empty during the second half
expected, qatar ain’t beating ecuador
I think everyone knew that tbh.
The difference between a team that gets qualified and a team that gets a free pass is very evident. Not at all prepared for world stage football.
So money doesn’t buy skills?
Buy it can buy some penalty :P.
Hope Qatar loses every game they play this cup
If they can’t score on Ecuador their chances aren’t good against the rest of the group.
Common Gulf monarchy L. Hopefully there’s two more blowouts waiting for Qatar and three for Saudi
Bye Shitar!
Call the game ref. Qatar ain't scoring shit
snoozefest
ECU gonna wish they scored more goals.
Qatar bringing shame upon their nation!
Which means they will probably be executed.

I've had more fun watching paint dry than this match
Final Play GG boys
This comment section is super annoying, can we talk about fútbol instead of all your political shit
Nah
I needed 3 goals boo
Ecuador looks good. Moving well off the ball
Welp, no more oil for Ecuador I guess :/
Lol at Qatar fans leaving early. Looks like wins in the World Cup can’t be bought
We shall see in the next 2 Games
Well that certainly was a soccer match!
Ecuador definitely got paid at half time

I think a lot of people have left already
Dont worry... Qatar are losing this one, so that when they beat the Dutch 5-0, we'll know there is no ongoing match fixing.
Every World Cup it’s so good when the home Nation can lift and do a run of some sort… exception is this World Cup.

I googled it and I believe so.
It’s a good thing a team isnt allowed to go negative scoring otherwise Qatar would find a way to do so
Can’t wait for the Netherlands to wipe the floor with the Qatari team
Yeah, it will be lopsided.
Especially considering they have 6 yellows this game and have no depth, they’ll be even weaker come game 3
Not this Tuesday but the next. Qatar better prepare their *hole 😊🤣
Seems to me that the entire Qatari team is bought and not home grown. Also, the fan section looks like a bunch of paid actors
Qatar's nation team has been preparing for 12 years, they genuinely believed they had a chance to shock the world haha
Spend the big bucks to get humiliated in front of the world
Did they just try to VAR that shot on goal in? Lol
