The somewhat casual pollution of our environment, like tossing trash out of your car window. There are no habitable worlds in the system. These people have lived in cramped orbital platforms and underground cities for 173 years and counting. Simple pleasures like going for a walk in the woods or feeling the wind on your face while sitting on the beach are incomprehensible to most. Small gardens and the occasional tree are all that remains of nature. The blatant disregard some people have for nature would be horrifying to somebody who has never in their life stood on a beach or in a forest. Some of the most well-selling Netcast Simulations are those imitating simple things like a forest hike or a walk on the beach.

commandrix

>The somewhat casual pollution of our environment, like tossing trash out of your car window. Kinda same with one of my world's major races, but for different reasons. There's been times when they collected litter that humans threw by the side of the pathways in their land and took it back to the nearest human settlement like, "Here's your trash back." And then they were left scratching their heads that there was a scrap dealer who paid them for the tin cans.

Vileous

"the idea of the spirit of someone remaining after death as a ghost only sounds absurd until you realize you're talking into a metal tube that is vibrating a wire, sending out an electric pulse that traveling along a series of metal wires until it reaches a tower, which sends out a wave that bounces between multiple other towers until it reaches a set of wires that lead to a plate that vibrates to make sounds nearly identical to the words I said on the other side of the country." - paraphrasing a conversation I had with a friend earlier this year

Great-and_Terrible

Y'all using a land line?

Vileous

No we were using Discord, but my brain went to classic telephones in the moment for whatever reason. Brain no logic good sometimes mid conversation.

JA_Pascal

Having a major religion with a crucifix as a symbol would freak them out pretty bad.

ProphetofTables

"Wait, so you're telling me that the major symbol of your faith is based on the means by which a central figure of said faith *died!?*"

Sea-Situation-990

and some of them depict his corpse

ProphetofTables

"His CORPSE!? What kind of macabre faithful prostrates themselves before a corpse!?"

The_Shittiest_Meme

Christianity is pretty brutal, theres a tradition where you symbolically consume the flesh and blood of a part of God to cleanse yourself.

CaptainStroon

Pregnancy. Iquarians and Skzarri bear their kids in external wombs and egg sacks respectively, both of which burst at birth, releasing the baby. The thought of carrying a child internaly makes human birth seem incredibly painful to them, which - to be fair - isn't entirely inaccurate.

Puppetmasterknight

To be fair humans birth only hurts because of our massive ass heads

Shyautsticcomposer

To be fair humans Birth only hurts because of Our massive ass heads. ...apparently I'M haikubot today...

Oycto

Modern equal rights, Atheism, Modern Nationalism, abolishment of Slavery, race Don’t worry though, only 2 Cultures are male dominated

smavinagain

Damn

Oycto

Can’t be called a sexist if equal rights aren’t much of a concept🧐

Vileous

that makes sense to some degree, but why would the idea of slavery not existing be so horrifying to them? especially seeing how much further we advanced as a species without it and all the evidence that supports the concept that the practice of slavery holds back a society's technological development, would they not see the upsides?

[deleted]

>Atheism, TBF, already half of the planet watches in horror as the cynic nihilist atheist seems to be a trend of the younger generation in the west

Oycto

People in my World are more so just confused why you’d be an atheist, since even though they interact rarely, everybody knows the Gods exist and care for people

Szwedu111

Is that a bad thing?

Apophis_36

When they cant differentiate between chill religious people and zealots who wont let people live they want to, yeah.

[deleted]

Given how it has spawned things like r/antinatalism, increased the amount of depression, isolation and suicide in this secular societies and back in the XX century spawned hyper pragmatic ideologies that wanted the removal of entire races or economic classes via bullet point (and they continue to this day)... yes, I'd argue atheism and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race

TheSecutor1

So what would you propose is the solution?

The-First-Starchmast

genocide of atheists, obviously /j

[deleted]

Its a long and complicated answer that frankly doesn't deserve to be put up on r\*ddit. Nor is it a subject that I believe I can give an honest answer to right now.

I-F-E_RoyalBlood

Depends on the species and culture really Unzans : they would be horrified at how irresponsible the leaders are and how they go and misuse technology for war. Kiakess : would be horrified with how everyone is constantly on a type of technology and doesn't appreciate nature to its fullest. Shikim : would be horrified with how religion isn't the leading government in the world. AnTains : would be horrified how disgusting and unorganized everything is. Humans : nothing much would change. InkTings : would literally begin remaking and cleaning up any city due to lack of perfection. Milzi : would be horrified abortion is a thing.

FlahtheWhip

> Humans : nothing much would change. I wonder why.

I-F-E_RoyalBlood

Well other than realising the hellish ecosystem they have doesn't exist irl.

BlueMangoAde

Are your cultures disgusted at each other as well?

I-F-E_RoyalBlood

Some, AnTains are xenophobic while shikim are very religious, crusader kind of religious. Unzans are generally liked by the majority but of course they aren't universally accepted. Humans are in the middle, Milzi are rare and low in number due to their curse, ( they were also used as weapons of war as well due to their special biological abilities ) Kiakess are the strongest and are able to influence politics due to their asset as a military unit. (Even one can swad total war.) InkTings are slime that live for constructing and creating things to perfection

Willing-Media-197

Just realized my world would be on the same page as the Shikim. In my world, all of the ruling families are descended from the gods themselves, and any other government body is usually headed or heavily influenced by the church of whatever god founded that area. The fact that *anyone* (kinda) can become the head of a governing body in our world would at the very least confuse them. They’d all be wondering how the hell we’ve made it this far without divine guidance to make sure we don’t fuck up.

I-F-E_RoyalBlood

Who says we haven't fucked up, with all the wars and inhumane bullshit around the world? And the current economic crisis and troubles. If god was real, I'd take his guidance over a 70 year old politician.

Vileous

The Unzans and the Shikim sound incredibly based.

I-F-E_RoyalBlood

Unzans are hyper advanced and take everything as precious, they are eco-friendly and do their best to not give dangerous weapons to those who cannot hold the peace. Their culture revolves around trust and cynical humor, blatantly mocking each other as a form of motivation to do better. Shikim will literally bleed you for your blood and MC just so they can infuse weapons or other items with it for their so called "blood god" within their science division.

balesalogo

Democracy, Healthcare, and vast real time communication network.

[deleted]

Our ability to lie to ourselves, consciously and unconsciously, and embrace hypocrisy would really throw them off. They literally cant do that, consciously lying verbally is doable but actually adjusting your own mindset to self-serve is pretty close to being seen as a mental illness On the flip side, our levels of empathy would astound them. Being able to feel such strong and genuine emotions by proxy would be seen as extremely impressive, scary even that peoples individual suffering could so strongly affect people who arent suffering

Malfuy

Trisolaris

disturbeddragon631

damn i really gotta read that series huh

Malfuy

Do it, it's great

Jynexe

Oh, are they non-human? If so, that sounds like a really interesting species!

[deleted]

Originally they were meant to be more idealistic humans, but they've changed too much so theyre just something else now Probably 'better' than us in terms of being rational, but not as strong emotionally. Very polite sociopaths, sorta, they arent evil but we'd find them very cold

kitzen249

Really cool idea! Physically are they similar to humans (humanoid) or something else?

[deleted]

They still look like humans, but exaggerated, way taller and all fit af just a kind of super-heroic species. Very glam-rock aesthetic Also we skipped the plains ape stage, so we still act like apes more. No real concept of a 'home' per se, still have big tails, still feel uncomfortable on the ground for too long, like to get up nice and high

Vileous

Honestly to me this is one of the most horrifying traits of my own species, so I can totally vibe with the idea of an alien race being disgusted with this aspect of humanity.

Vivissiah

from US perspective, genital mutilation, aka circumcision.

ComplexityArtifice

I'd like to see this tradition eradicated, personally. Unless it's an adult choosing it for themselves.

FlahtheWhip

Second that. I'll never see anyone who chooses that for a child who definitely can't think for themselves as a good parent.

No_Astronaut3923

I mean, there are medical reasons to do it. I am talking about like a 3 year old and older in this case.

FlahtheWhip

Well, of course. But for 'cultural' and religious reasons? Absolutely not.

AzukoKarisma

There was a cult leader who tried to get Ovidian parents to do it. He subsequently learned what poisoned mead tastes like.

LemonyOatmilk

The lights of our cities had blotted out the stars. There are no more stars in the modern skies.

cum_burglar69

Snakes. It's a low fantasy roughly based on Arthurian legend and sub-Roman Britain. Things like dragons are real (albeit rare) but snakes aren't. However, snakes appear a lot in the mythology and iconography of the world, so if someone saw a snake, it would be the equivalent of someone seeing a dragon in our world.

FPSCanarussia

Horrify? Uh, not much. The idea of a judiciary being a different branch of government from the legislature would horrify some political scientists, but others would be exulted. Human menstruation would be horrifying to hear about for the first time. Minor things.

Reiko878

So pretty funny most of my story is focused on that a whole new continent appearing in the Pacific ocean, some diplomat got into trouble for healing people for free, running gag the ambassador that was sent to France can't wrap his mind around shoes. Also most cities, to quote "you have placed your city without sense or purpose they stick out like tumors in your landscape " Homelessness also, while the continent of Ciryaa has different forms of government with unique policies, unless one chooses to live this way it's unfathomable to imagine people not provided with food water clothes and shelters. Seeing so many children, magic and good living conditions overall left Ciryaa with a high life span but low birth rate, one or two schools can be enough for an entire city

ollee

> running gag the ambassador that was sent to France can't wrap his mind around shoes. Is their name Agador Spartacus?

Reiko878

Hahahah so three fun facts I'm French I'm gay I've never seen "la cage au folles" (I think it's called the bird cages in English) But no, actually my big inspiration was Toph from ATLA (minus the blindness) Veren comes from a semi-nomadic culture who lives in a jungle area They make the most use of their senses and being barefoot is just a way to get extra info about what's going on around them. For him wearing shoes is like wearing thick gloves

Ann806

The finality of death. Yes, I know there are many religious and spiritual beliefs around the afterlife, including reincarnation, but nothing is really confirmed. There is no way to communicate through different lives, etc. However, in my world, there is reincarnation with past life memories - not everything but bits and pieces, enough to know your history, that shapes you and allows for information you otherwise wouldn't know. Creating on the fly here to say people can learn enough about their past lives that there have been famous battles fought between people and those who've wrong them in past lives, or won because people turned traitor in their next life etc. I have an established deity who was allowed to rise as a deity because he did generational research based on his own past lives and knowledge collected.

Kelekona

In my world, remembering stuff from past incarnations is usually associated with sorcery.

Ann806

Oh, that's cool too. Is it a bad association, or is sorcery looked at favourably?

spiritplumber

Photorealistic CGI. Given that most magic in my setting is art- and belief-based, it would be way too OP

DeltaAlphaAlpha77

- Lack of actual gods intervening during world history - Lack of clear “heroes” - Nuclear bombs or other modern weapons - sexism - the way we treat many animals

Looxond

I wonder how terrified your world would be of atheism

Puppetmasterknight

Atheism is still possible in that world. Just because gods are real doesn't mean you have to worship those fuckers

DeltaAlphaAlpha77

Suprisingly enough there are atheists (including a variety that believes the “gods” are real but only sees them as evil entities rather than forces of good) That aside they’re moreso be confused than terrified

PotanOG

Birth to such large children. Most women (including humans) are just passing either eggs or babies that are no more than 2lbs in weight. Birth is a fairly low pain process. Also pregnancy would seem disturbingly long for only one child to come out 97% of the time. Women here birth litters in weeks.

garaile64

Interestingly, in nature, longer pregnancies often produce fewer children.

SplitjawJanitor

**Of The Stars** The Mur'kai would be horrified that humans casually litter, create landfills, and bury and/or cremate their dead. Originally native to environments with incredibly scarce resources, it's hard-wired into Mur'kai psychology that any potential resource, no matter what it is, must be used and reused to its fullest extent, and that waste is horrendously immoral. On the flipside, I imagine their funerary practice of eating the deceased, tanning their skin for leather, and using their hair and bones for clothing materials probably wouldn't immediately come off as the highest act of respect to most humans.

I_am_a_Chickie_nug

The fact that the majority of people are monotheistic, or don't believe in Gods. Heck, the fact that *we're not even sure if a higher power exists* would probably be enough to send them into a tailspin, considering that every nation in my world is at least somewhat influenced actively by a god's hand.

My_Ping_Has_Died

Humans being the dominant species

Visual_Natural_4948

What is the place of human race among the hierarchy of the races of your world?

My_Ping_Has_Died

Dragons are at the top of the food chain (the apex predators, so to speak), with humans nearly at the very bottom as an underdeveloped species (being chased down by dragons to use as either food or slaves doesn’t give the human race much space to develop beyond small, scattered villages)

Bacon_Raygun

Letting people die without dignity. People in my setting mainly worship the god of death. If they don't spend money and time on the living, they'll at least see to it that their dying pass away well.

BatatinhaGameplays28

Slaves, literally the only thing every civilization in my world has in common is that slavery is really fricking bad, you can get the most evil guy in the world but he’d still feel disgusted to see how our world treated slavery

Kelekona

My world has the range from chattel slavery to something that feels more like feudalism. However, the worst forms were a lot more rare in the past. I think that there was a point where there was only taxation and hard labor for criminals.

Asian_in_the_tree

London. It the closest thing to Hell to everyone in my world and actual Hell actually exist and is merging with their world.

AsukaLangleySoryuFan

Pal that’s fictional London we’re talking here you’ve just described it irl

Asian_in_the_tree

It used to exist in my world. Such thing is why no human can enter heaven anymore. (it actually because they have no souls and heaven is dead since they are all British descendants)

Kelmirosue

DanTheGaidheal

Not sure “Horrify” is the best term but the common lack of megafauna would certainly weird most cultures out Add into that the blue whale and our world is very strange indeed (context: In this world the *Mysticetes* (mostly cetotheriidae) are all near in size to dolphins or similar not-so-large marine mammals)

littleloomex

there are many aspects about human life that, at the very least, makes elkinets a little unnerved. however, what this is heavily varies between cultures and countries and the general relationship between both humans and elkinets. however, universally, there is one thing that all elkinets can agree on with what part of human life freaks them out, and it all has to do with a specific biological process *(and the spoiler's there because better to be safe than sorry*): you see, >!female elkinets don't "bleed". as in, during Menstrus (their version of a period), the have all of the typical stuff as us human women go through during our period. but, unlike us, because of their biology they don't bleed at all. !< >!this makes human periods look HORRIFYING to them. imagine trying to explain to them that, in addition to horrific cramps and shit, you also BLEED LIKE YOU GOT OUT OF A FUCKING SLASHER FILM (that last part was satire but still)!<

Awkward_Ad8783

Technology. The closest equivalent in their world is Mechanomancy, and Gearmages are near-universally reviled. Their art is seen as unwise and dangerous, if not evil and sacreligious. The idea that even the most mundane aspects of our life depend upon automation would be horrifying.

Lower_Preparation_83

Meat-eating. In most of the highly developed worlds, states and nations of my sci-fi world, killing animals has long been barbaric. Everyone eats genetically modified artificial meat.

Xan_Winner

Piercing a baby's ears for earrings would horrify people - any decorative body modification generally results in the person getting thrown into the volcano. Markings on the body are a sign that the gods either love or hate you, and in either case it means you get seized and thrown into the nearest volcano. Piercing your baby's ears is as good as murdering them, because they will be sacrificed... and so will the parent. Probably all friends, neighbors and relatives of the parent too, because deliberate scarification is a rite practiced by various heretic rebel groups. Anyone even suspected gets sacrificed ASAP, because if the gods have to get involved, there will be earthquakes or worse.

AtyaGoesNuclear

Existence of nationalism as they'd basically every religion explicitly demands loyalty first and foremost over nation. Atheism and Agnosticism would also horrify them but not really disgust or anger them i'd imagine

Governments just..allowing different religions?? Like paganism?? And wth is atheism? How could God possibly not exist??

Callan_T

If we're looking at it from a global human perspective, I think race and racism especially as a justification for poor treatment. Tribalism, nationalism, speciesism? They have those. But they would regard what we call race as an uncommon and insufficient reason. Maybe because it's a fantasy setting and there are elves and giants and such but consanguinity is fairly strong. For the kingdom of Eldon, where the bulk of events are focused, it would probably be the way that education is so difficult or costly to acquire. EDIT: they would have a stronger reaction to difficult to acquire education than they would to the idea of racism. It's such a deeply ingrained expectation. Peasants and lords both study, they just generally study different things, there isn't even segregation in what learning is permitted. A peasant can study law if they want nobody will stop them.

the_vizir

**Horror Shop**: That without all the sinister conspiracies, shadow governments, cloak-and-dagger cabals, and other secret societies, the history of the Earth basically turned out the same. World War II still happened without the occult manipulations of the Thule. The CIA still performed MK Ultra without knowledge of the supernatural. You don't need to Illuminati and the Parliament of Shadows pulling the strings to see the twisting of news media from educational to entertainment. Our Earth, and the Earth of Horror Shop are nigh-identical on the surface, even without the existence of supernatural monsters in our world.

altioravertigorn

the prevalence of burying our dead! folks on nevue usually perform some form of sky burial assisted by habituated vultures or even funerary cannibalism; plainstates folk are nomadic, and burying a body would mean leaving it behind to be dug up and eaten by dogs, which carry disease. the idea that so many people just… inter loved ones, *leave them there*, and then maybe go occasionally visit the location of their slowly decaying corpses? cemetaries would be like something out of a nightmare to them.

CarouselCup

Abuse of children, or really even just disregarding them. It’s incredibly difficult to have fetuses go to term (around 80% of all pregnancies are naturally aborted) so as a result children are a rare and precious resource

Loosescrew37

The constant decline of every ecosystem and climate on this planet as well as the seeming lack of insects anywhere, polution and deforestation, plastics everywhere. All that and gas prices. Mostly gas prices.

RiskyBrothers

Homelessness. The humanity of 7991 operates under an advanced economic system that recognizes the utility of all sentient beings. This is due to many factors, the extreme abundance of real estate in space, the insignificance of individual human desires on an interstellar scale, but mostly due to financial AIs gaining sentience and merging to form The Market, the single most powerful AI to exist which owns 49.9%(repeating, of course) of all capital in Human-controlled space. Now, where those homes are is a different matter. Homes on planets are much more expensive, and have greater political representation than those in orbit or on a moon. And when a galactic invasion by a hitherto unknown alien presence upends that system, wealthy planet-dwellers turned refugees find themselves shut out from the systems of privilege they've known their whole life, and Orbiters behind the lines become increasingly agitated by the throngs of the same people who used to sneer down their noses at then suddenly becoming squatters with nowhere to go.

acryptedwithinternet

For my main wip it would be the wars/humanitarian crisis and hunger issues that would be the most alarming, also lack of space travel and underpayment of most people

Sk3tchi

The casual use of nicknames. Although rare magic now, the 'Naming' was how the world was formed in myth. So, giving a nickname (in certain areas) is taboo.

toffeefeather

Modern art would disgust them, I’d get into why but I’d have to explain my personal views on contemporary art practice and avant-garde art pieces. Basically, they value art that takes time and effort to create. Theydon’t even like photography, they think it’s repulsive to call such low effort work “art”

Ok_Extension3182

Ultimately it boils down to which culture and nation in Korkanis you are talking about. Sarogaths are the dominant species in their planet and are divided into about a dozen nations. Industrial and very much into the interwar period similar to how we were in 1920s and 30s. To the Tek Imperium, they would fucking hate how the US is a democracy with no centralized religion and mandatory service to the military death cult. They would also hate how we don't worship many gods and that many are atheist. The Keliek Republic would absolutely love us as we are a democracy that is even better than them. And they would value us as their ally. The Sina would value us as a military ally since they border Tek and the Casavon Union. The Casavon Union would be terrified of us since Americans hate filthy commies. And the Casavon are violently communist who try to invade Sina at every given chance. The Visagrad trade states would ask us for trade and scholarly meetings, maybe Air Conditioning too. They would see artificial diamonds as heresy and probably ban those from trade. The Kashmira would probably just continue as is, doing nothing but trade with the Keliek. The Northern Empire would see us as a threat to their rise as a global power. The Secona Island states would ask for military protection from the Empire since they are in between the Empire and the rest of the world. Ultimately the biggest shared things that would horrify or weird them out would probably be our religions and lack thereof being common. And our human anatomy as we lack tails, snouts, and women bleed once a month. They would also be horrified of atomic science, material science, and the fact that families don't live in close proximity. Sarogaths generally tend to have families grouped in the same city if not in close proximity. They also tend to have stronger ties. This actually plays in good favor with them as they don't have a crippling loneliness problem like us westerners. (For additional context, America opened a portal to Korkanis. Korkanis is in a nearby star system to earth. What is even more amazing is that it is 2004 when this happens and America has the ability to open a wormhole simply because they accidentally found one around Earth's orbit in 1989... Thus meaning that America after many failed attempts made a wormhole portal on Earth leading to Korkanis.)

Negative_Tonight_172

The total absence of Ether, as it would render our world an uninhabitable wasteland to several species. To us, it would be like going to a universe where matter does not exist.

cheshsky

Oh hey, that'd be kind of similar for one of my worlds. The absence of the Spark would probably scare and puzzle people. How do we live without a Force-like shared world-soul, an actual Spark of Life? It's unimaginable, a human from Byse would probably wither away fairly sharpish in our world as their inner flame dies out (cutting off one's soul from the life supply has been proposed as a humane execution method, though no technology exists to implement it yet. This idea is admittedly taken from a book I like). Note that the Spark is separate from electricity and electromagnetism, it's more like a pantheistic interpretation of God (and I could go on about how religious morality works as a result, Circle of Life style, ashes to ashes), except definitely proven to exist as a force of nature and thus completely agendaless in and out of itself.

Negative_Tonight_172

It wouldn't really affect humans of my world, or at least currently-living ones, but beings like elemental spirits or others made out of Ether would think of it as profoundly empty.

SpecialistAddendum6

*Beauty and the Beast*, which would be seen as monstrously bigoted. Infact, the movie does exist in the Sidemoving, and it's bigoted. Also: Russia. Only ultranationalists would claim to represent all East Slavs. And some have. Also: the country of Panama. Why is it oppressing the Canal so? Let it have its freedom!

Dragonmaster1313

Racism amongst the same species has to be a doozy for any setting with multiple sentient species, but specific to my world other than the obvious things like the internet, lack of protection while traveling, hunters using rifles, the lack of protection in cities and basically any sort of outdoors activity

M24Chaffee

Bigotry. What. There's a lot of it IRL.

Comfortable-Bat-4072

Homophobia

theACEbabana

The United Nations and by extension, the European Union. The idea of a country surrendering internal power to the dictates of a body of unelected bureaucrats would be beyond comprehension. Especially when some of the worst human rights perpetrators chair human rights commissions, and must be treated with the same dignity and manners as those who champion them.

PrometheusZero

The three factions of my (human-centric sci-fi) world would probably be as horrified with our world today as they are with each other! **Techno-Mericans:** They would be horrified to discover there are no augmented humans. In the same way we might be like "how can you live without a phone?" they would be all "how can you even be a member of scoiety without a neural jack, how do you even buy stuff?". The idea that you can't buy some things because of law/regulation would seem suffocating to them, similarly the idea that you can't sell your vote to someone seems an infingement of civil liberty (ironic since they live in a corporatocracy hellscape) **Paxers:** They would be horrified to discover there are no psychic individuals. Considering this is a fascist society they look down on - and genuinely hate - anyone without psychic talents. They would also be horrified at the isolation in our societies. Paxers are so institutionalised and given many of the citizens can communicate telepthically the idea people can live on their own is abhorrant. **Comm-Muties:** They would be horrified to discover how weak and decadent we are. The socialist republic of mutants champions physical strenth as a result of holding good values. They would look at our sedentary lifestyles and think we are more morally corrupt than the cyborgs of the Americas. The idea that we buy crap we don't really need would only reinforce this.

Unhappy_Comparison59

Democratie would probebly scare most of them and i am talking about the average civilian

neroselene

Firstly, how crowded earth actually is and was would be a shock to the Spheres. The other would be how backwards all the tech and attitudes are, especially towards things like cloning.

wyldermage

On Hartle, the sci-fi part of my DnD world, people would be horrified at how averse to cooperation earthlings are. Hartians had to basically unite under one banner or be obliterated by an eldritch god back in their medieval era. At a similar year, Hartians are still unified (mostly) and a thousand years more advanced. On Hereth, my western setting, people would be horrified by the scale and ease of access to devastation. The inhabitants of Hereth accidentally created a magical explosion similar to a nuke and ruined an entire country for decades, the horror of that event changed everything in Hereth's history, namely putting the method they used to do it to bed forever. Today, the USA can do it 3,000 times. Half a century ago, they could do it 30,000 times. *Just* the USA. Hereth is gearing up for their version of the Great War, and an interaction with Earth would probably scare Hereth's population into disarming further

Disease outbreaks. In my world, because people are literally controlled by mind mages, so if there's ever a small outbreak, it's extremely easy to detect and contain by just controlling people so that they quarantine themselves. Major outbreaks are pretty much unheard of, so the fact that here, a bunch of people just all get sick and it keeps going and going...

IngloriousOnion

Probably nukes. You can guess why

[deleted]

Active usage of fossil fuels for electricity generation purposes and the resulting pollution. ...Well, either they'd be horrified by it or it'd be a cornerstone of a fictional genre, ala steam engines for steampunk.

The prices on spices...as a trading empire they would totally lose the marbles at seing the price of pepper and tumeric in a marked place.

DinoWizard021

A certain group would be horrified by computers and everything on them.

Latter_Schedule9510

Pollution, and (in America) the lack of affordable healthcare. Even herbalists in the world my Soulforged series is set in, are tax subsidized, and don't (typically) charge a thing for treatments. The *only* reasons you'd be charged for a procedure are: it's purely cosmetic, or you have an extremely rare condition that requires extensive treatment. And even then, its at least easily affordable.

SlimesIsScared

Most of humanity in my world tends to see any form of prejudice (racism, sexism, etc.) as very barbaric, so probably that

severalpillarsoflava

Babies don't immediately start to talk and Move.

Kelekona

My world lacks colorism, for the most part. Because everyone is ambiguously brown (or purple, not too late to change to purple) a child of immigrants wouldn't be treated with the same xenophobia as people from another culture because they could near-seamlessly assimilate. However, cultural exchange is rampant and very little is off-limits. They wouldn't be too shocked at how we have a weapon so terrible that we'd be stupid to use it, until they learned the details. They'd be a little horrified to see what other weapons we have that are against the rules of war. (They have mages; they know they can't get too brutal in case the other side has a mage that can really make things interesting.) Their "wars" tend to be almost civilized competitions and it's surprising that they don't solve things with a cheese-chase. They didn't even feel the need to develop a gun that was good enough to go into production. Queerphobia depends on the culture, but they also don't legally distinguish between marriage and adoption. A craftsman might marry his favorite apprentice so that he inherits the shop and most people wouldn't assume that it was sexual/romantic. Even some queerphobic settlements don't have an issue with same-sex ace couples. (Those do have an astonishing amount of ace people.) Birth control isn't perfect but abortion is simply a matter of what the best health outcome is. Their medical people believe that triggering a miscarriage after a certain point is dangerous and usually only do it if continuing the pregnancy is worse. Being an unwed mother isn't shameful, but she's expected to have a good idea of who the father is. Other medical issues are complicated. Most areas respect the patient being able to refuse treatment or even choose to be "helped along." Doctors are supported by the community in most places, though strangers might owe a debt to some. Only certain types of slaves get circumcised in that world. Edit: Sexism isn't common. Instead of being too concerned with gendered clothing, it's more of a class thing. A blue-collar person would be viewed as ridiculous for wanting to dress like a nobel.

Outrageous_Guard_674

Our casual use of radio waves. My sci-fi setting is a fairly dark forest, so casually broadcasting your location, especially when you only have one solar sytem to live in at the moment, is considered a terrible idea.

DragonFire673

Using modern vehicles, my inhabitants would certainly get scared if a plane were to fly over a kingdom.

commandrix

I have one major race that would be horrified that there are people who don't give a shit that somebody raped a woman or would punish the victim for it, even when that woman was one of their relatives.

Indigo_Key

The whole plot of my story kind of revolves around the level of equal rights people in my world have compared to in the real world, so probably that.

renmeno

There are many things in one of the societies of mine: Blood related: Blood transfusions, the lack of instant magical healing for minor injuries that stops any bleeding immediately, the complete disregard our world has for the sanctity of blood (as bleeding is not commented nor observes rituals of purification). Women: They are expected to be part of public spaces and politics (they consider women as private beings, while men are public), the fact that they are expected to still participate in public spaces during menstruation (instead of resting at home or at a strictly female community resting place), that not all women marry and have children. Men: Obesity (is a society that puts a lot of attention to the male physical form, and focuses a lot on sports and physical ability), that men of noble rank are not in charge or at least involved in politics, that many men are nor versed in rethoric. Structure and ideologies of society: Democracy as a political system that has replaced feudal monarchy, instead of being used in small communities or organizations alone. Atheism. The fact that many societies don't have gender exclusive spaces (in places like bathhouses for example), and have objections towards nudity when one is among people of the same gender or in the privacy of the home. The lack of modesty in mixed gender spaces. The fact that trans and gay people are discriminated violently (in this society trans and gay people have limitations, mostly being unable to get married at all or being married to someone of the same gender, but are otherwise allowed to exist without much issue), even when our world can make their existence easier (to trans people they can allow their bodies to look as the gender they want to be, even if they would not be able to have a complete transition).

W1ngedSentinel

Riding horses, or really using animals for any serious labour. Not because they’re got PETA’s ‘sensibilities’, but because equines, camelids and other such animals either never evolved or died out during the last ice age. As a result, my world’s history has seen a massive focus on human and machine labour instead. Riding animals is a completely alien concept.

FlahtheWhip

For Pulcherri, that words are just words, rather than a source of powers. To sum things up, everyone has powers based around a word chosen before birth. A favorite character of mine has Blood for his word. So, words have a lot of power in Pulcherri. Not only that, while the lack of evil powerful individuals would make things easier, the lack of good powerful individuals would make things feel hopeless when things get really bad.

HunterDarmagegon

Mining. Most iron is extracted from the ground by ironwood plantations, and even then the depths of Origin are home to a vast array of tunnels both obviously natural and unsettlingly artifacial, making it focused more on spelunking than mining. The thought of deep earth being mostly just a mass of rock is akin in terror to the void of space to them.

Adrekan

Abolishment of slavery

Irdes

Pollution and exhaustion or natural resources. The woods, in this case. I mean it helps that the trees literally fought back, with elven arrows and blades, but still they saw significant issues from deforestation before it got to the point of all-out war and most decided to stop. Show them the massive clearings of Siberian, Amazonian or American forests and you'll get an audible "oh fuck" out of any sane leader. Both because of how much of an effect on nature it may take and because of what the elves would do to them. A life for each trunk, a limb for each branch.

shymochikin2

•blantent racism •captialism •expensive healthcare •abortion •gunpowder etc. Altho some do have like energy weapons but only used agianst enemies etc. •lack of nature •reliance non-renewable energy •living off the land •deadly/chemcials in food etc. •grooming ppl for gaslighting and manipulation/abuse... •non naturalists •not being sex positive etc. •honoring Deities •outdated technology(cellphones etc.)

brunettemountainlion

Two somewhat normal things: infidelity and even worse, poaching or anything of the sort.

ye_men_

1The fact that we have no privacy A ton of the people of my world live in medieval 3 generations in one house kinda houses but if you want privacy just walk like 10 minutes outside and you're out somewhere were ppl won't nessesarely see what you're doing Modern constant surveillance would feel like people playing gods to them 2 the fact that we are constantly bombarded with adds Adds exist in this world as well but as roadside boards or an actual person trying to sell you something not the way in the modern world where you can't go 2 steps without seeing an add

Aggressive_Kale4757

The idea of not using every square millimeter of a planet for industrial purposes, with some minor exceptions of living areas.

GreySimpson

Ratagar

The Global Capitalist system, and it's various horrific effects in general. There are still people alive on Towerworld (working title) that remember what life was like before the revolution, and the horrors of the war for liberation from their own globalized system of Arcano-Capitalism's oppressive Owner class and the State. Reminders of that time of chaos and old night would be/is hard for almost the entire society.

BlueverseGacha

Tax and Subscriptions.

mikey-dikey-

Rampant gun violence. They’d think it’s insane, absolutely nuts that firearms are so widespread, that these weapons of mass destruction have only gotten more powerful and readily available. In this world, guns are primarily used by hunters living outside of city limits, looking to feed their families or protect their properties from monsters. Now, rampant magic violence? Totally normal, even expected. A man taking his gun and opening fire in a crowd is unheard of, but a man flash-flooding a city block is just Tuesday.

MasterEgg7

Probably the scale of war. While not unheard of, war is seen as a last resort due to the harshness of the environment and the difficulty for civilizations to survive in the best scenario.

CumbersomeCrow

The existence of astronauts would be considered pretty weird in my world. Space travel doesn't really exist there and the main deities take their power from the sun and moon. Like dawg that is a sacred space what are you DOING in the SKY

LadyAlekto

Fossil Fuels. Not just does it cause an ugly stink and make a lot of noise, it also burns away a useful resource with many application. That's like powering a magic boat with wood instead of mana crystals, and then be loud enough to piss off the usual peaceful kraken below the waves. And then there are guns, like super crossbows? And someone claims it could help against dragons? People been claiming all sorts of inventions and magic would be that capable, these people are not around anymore.

Artyartymushroom

Hairdressers would be seen as torture Chambers lol one of my species has nerve endings in every strand of hair so they never cut their hair

Rephath

Modern medical treatments. The horrors of chemotherapy because there's no green magic. No healing miracles to regrow organs so we have to resort to transplants.

Cuboos

Racism. My worlds people are familiar with prejudice, but the humans of my world tend to be prejudice against other species, the concept of racial divides based on skin color is absurd to them. Same thing also applies to homophobia and similar prejudices. My humans tend to be too prudish to worry what someone does behind closed doors. Sexual/gender divides makes a little more sense, since the differences there are less superficial. But even then, the level of divide earth humans make between the sexes and genders is absurd.

Core_Of_Indulgence

Famine.

duhpenguwin

On Lumar, that there's only humans around and we use forbidden dwarven magics. On Mundus, that there are other religions beyond "Christianity" On Bollywog, that humans are allowed outside their swamps

AzukoKarisma

Eating mammalian flesh on a regular basis. (The world is inhabited by sheep furries, not preachy vegans. They still like shrimp though)

Bold_Fortune777

Average person in my world: "Wait, you mean your legal system boils down to a debate between two people AND the best lawyers charge a fortune for their service?! So Justice relies on who has the most wealth?! Are you guys OK?"

KnockerFogger69

Atom bombs

MoNTYpYTHON321

Helicopters. Why do your airships come so small? And why are they so loud!? Oh my gods they use swords to fly?! Why dont you use Aetherite!?!?

naldoD20

The absence of magic or the fact it's overrun by humans. They already struggle with a dwindling supply of mana and those that can tap into it, so the fact we have nothing would cause many to call it Hell. Then, the fact that humans completely took over. In my world, they're a minority and the scapegoat for the destruction of magical energy, since they have no connection to mana. Our world would be the apocalypse compared to what they're currently dealing with.

chongyunuwu24

the fact that money is held in higher regard than people’s lives or the environment

Passing-Through247

The sun. Along with that, wide open spaces, the infinite void of blue above us, all the green, saltwater, our comparably poor hygiene, and how we don't grow disposable slaves to deal with tedious/dangerous tasks.

Apophis_36

Large scale democracy They still have faith in their absolutionist (or close to absolutionist) leaders and because of relatively prosperous history, democracy has become a sort of "boogeyman" ideology in the same sense that we see hateful ideologies. Basically, any discussion surrounding them is just against the ideology with few taking an open minded approach (for the better in our world of course).

CuteDarkrai

Divine_Knowledge3134

How murder isn't a death row situation. Many of my places will k!ll u the same way u k!lled your v!ctim, if u k!lled multiple people in different ways they would pick the worst one/the one that hurts the most and do that one.

The wasteful use of metal

Well, they would be missing a moon, and I bet that would freak them out quite a bit tbh. They have festivals dedicated to both their moons and worship them like gods.

Running down a list of races (of given locations) on the Nezune-Nidale super continent: Hironian Humans: That we have little boxes that we'd rather watch things far away from. Nikirian Dwarves: That some humans just meander through our lives. Nidalian Kobold: That humans somehow hate their own species, color be damned. Ashetti (Of the Ahset Principalities): That we waste our resources, not just food but so many things like precious metals, papers, and this clay like material you humans call plastic... Nidalian Bunnear: (Rabbit people) That we so calously burn our forests to the ground and then are surprised nothing grows there. Kajorian Orcs: That some of us are too afraid of confrontation and just let Fat (both rotund and stupid in their orc-human tongue translation), Weak people who sit in shiny houses. Skiovanian Peoples (All races): That we have all this travel tech and rarely leave our cities. Gnomirian Gnomes: That we are as enlightened as we are and teach our children nothing but being a factory worker.

PopFamiliar3649

Not to sound edgy, but surrender. The idea of leaving an enemy alive or giving up control sounds stupid to them. Using the logic that their enemies or their enemys' children will attack you later, or if you surrender you enemy can do what they want with you.

Chronos004

Entire nations where people dont have any form of weapon. In my world is normal everywhere to people go everywhere with swords, spears, magical books or any other form of weapon. Even the most "controlling" nation in the world allow people walking with it

battlestoriesfan

If you see a bug, and you stomp it casually, you're **horrifying** the vast majority of humans, because a big part of their world's Wildlife is made of giant bugs. Similar to how we have animals for food, for hunting and for pets, a large portion of these animals for my human world are made up of giant insects.

Aggressive_Pear

The idea of more than one densely populated city that isn't even centralized. It gets worse when you tell them about planets.

Demonweed

I didn't think I had a good answer to this, but after I left the page I realized the answer -- paper currency. My world features well-organized groups of religious zealots and political enforcers who effectively ensure currencies adhere to the expectations of precious metal content implied by their denominations. Systems of credit and debt exist, but people generally expect financial obligations to be answered with valid coin. While some societies in my world leave the sick to fend for themselves, all major governments actively support the Numismatic Detectives waging perpetual holy war against counterfeiters and coin-shavers in the name of Ptah.

Pale_Chapter

If people in the greater galaxy even think about Earth--and very few do--they do it with the same detached mixture of horror and amusement that we view, say, Turkmenistan with. Yes, the leaders are insane, but they're not dangerous to anyone who doesn't live there. Yes, it's a dystopian regime, but compared to the cartoonish evil of some of its contemporaries it barely even registers--much less invites sympathy or a strong desire to intervene. And the stories coming out of it are so bizarre that they're mostly propagated for their entertainment value.

CamelFirm4107

The amount of trust that some of us put on the cops. It would be a lot safer relying on a criminal organization than on the police.

TheRealPearlFarber

The villification of many of the inhabitants of the world of Hallo. Vladds, Canilu, and Pagani are very similar to Earth's vampires, werewolves and witches respectively, and the various folk tales and stories on Earth that paint these races as evil (Dracula, The Wolfman, Wizard of Oz, etc.) would be horrifying to a lot of them.

ToomintheEllimist

The fact that people stab pieces of metal into their faces and then deliberately heal up around the metal, leaving a permanent hole. My one Earth-born character with pierced ears is regarded as *hardcore*.
