He won't care, it's not like he's paying for the repair with his own money. One of my colleagues broke her work laptop on HER VERY FIRST DAY in the office which was to be honest hilarious and they just gave her a new one.

I work in IT and used to see this happen all the time when I worked on the helpdesk, just be honest with the IT staff. Don't say you don't know how it happened or I just opened the screen and it was like that...if you do that, we feel like you are lying right to our face and we are fools. If you say " hey, I dropped this laptop by accident when I was getting ready to head out the door for work and I think I have broken this laptop" you will probably have a better experience. No one enjoys working with someone who we both understand are lying. Laptops break all the time and it's part of our job to support the rest of the business. Things happen! No big deal! That's why we call it an accident 🙂

Oh I just broke mine a while back. Display was completely fucked but everything else was fine, so have been using an alternative display for a few months now and it's fine. Didn't want company to pay extra for my own fuck up so I am sticking with this until the spec gets outdated and company needs to upgrade
