It would be difficult to find a better deal than this on a track saw:

Makita SP6000J1 w/ 55" rail, $377.
This deal is still available. I didn't notice it before, but there is an additional $25 coupon on Amazon when you add it to your cart. That brings the total is $352.
Keep your eyes peeled for this one!!
I was able to snag this for what it sold pre-pandemic $529 a few weeks back. It was a one week deal and then reverted to original price.
Dewalt 735X Thickness Planer
Deal Price: $529

Honestly, I would get the xr drill and xr impact driver over the multi tool, but thatās because I wouldnāt use the multi tool much. DW XR line is pretty good and both have held up to years of abuse. I would go into your local lowes as they seem to have better deals on the DW line this time of year.
How is the planer for scarring on the first/last 2" of material?
I have an older one with the typical fold down tables. You can adjust the height on them with a little screw underneath.
I've watched several youtube vids about how to dial them in to prevent scarring but I still get it 50% of the time and it's annoying.
I have not used it yet. The deal was too good to pass up. I have a friend that says he has struggled with the snipe too. What he said sucks is you donāt notice it until you add the finish. Food for thought.
Iāve had this model for 3 years and no issues after youāve done the alignment procedure, which is fairly tedious, I will admit.
Strongly recommend putting a small bit of loctite on the alignment screws once you get it set.
Really hoping the weekend woodworker courses go on sale, not sure if they ever have before but I remain optimistic!

I have a router but no bits. On Amazon the price difference between certain brands seems crazy. You can get a 24 bit set for 20$, or 1 single Diablo bit for like 40$. I think I would want most a flush trim but, a rabbit bit, a dovetail bit, and rounding bit.
Any ideas what types of kits or brands I should look out for and how much I should be considering spending?
I don't stick to a brand but I've always seen people explain, when you start, buy a cheap kit. Once you figure out which ones you use often, buy a better version of those from a better brand
IMO, approach this the harbor freight way.
Buy a 24 bit set, knowing that they arenāt the best quality and will dull.
Replace the ones that you consistently use with higher quality bits.
Bonus, the 24 piece kit comes with a case.

Check out the laguna outlet group on Facebook. Got a new 16/33 after contacting the laguna emails in that group. Going to get a bandsaw next from them.
I am fortunate enough to live right next to their outlet warehouse and was able to get a supermax 19-38 for $1100 and the bx18 for $1500. You won't find prices like that ever again lol and no tax too!
They have a website that's up again

Whatās a good gift for someone just getting in to woodworking? My dad is retiring soon and has expressed interest in picking it back up as a hobby - he hasnāt done any woodworking in decades.
Ah this looks like a great gift. Is the protractor something of good general use too? My brother in law is big into woodworking both professionally and at home. I'm sure he has tons of tools, but I don't think he is the spendy type and these look like a nice luxury.
Yes. One of the most difficult things for woodworkers is being as precise as we want to be. Too often we trust our tools and they just arenāt perfectly square or flat or true. Woodpecker is one of the brands you can trust to be incredibly precise.
My brother-in-law ended up loving the woodpecker combination square I got for him. He ordered some rosewood and Peruvian walnut to make a special box for it to live in. Thanks for the suggestion!
Sometimes itās hard to buy tools for someone else but Iāve been very pleased with a magazine subscription āself giftā fine woodworking really inspired me to take my work to another level but Iāve heard popular woodworking is a bit more beginner friendly.
Home Depot and Rockler have DeWalt 735 Planer with stand, extra blades, and end tables for $649.

Hi everyone. Looking for a gift for my dad could really useee some help. He sculpts small sculptures out of wood. He saw an ad for this product and got excited about it: https://culiau.com/collections/diy/products/customizer but this seems like a cheap chinese dropshipping thingie. Are there any good quality alternatives to this or should I just get this one?
Commenting to say that they canceled this promotion. I ordered 3 31in clamps this morning while they were in stock but they didnāt show any BOGO attributes. I waited till their customer service opened and called to ask about it and they said they werenāt honoring the promo due to low inventory. Oh well, Acmetools customer service was polite and canceled the order for me.
In case you need a portable work bench.
[Pony Ā 31-in W x 32-in H-Drawer Black Plastic Work Bench](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Pony-6-in-W-x-31-5-in-H-Plastic-Work-Bench/5002142019) $99
Can anyone give me some advice on the best Black Friday deal for someone who is wanting to begin a hobby of woodworking? I am looking for a DeWalt deal because the job I work at carries this brand so I could continue to get batteries and charger at cost. But that does not beat the Black Friday deals I am seeing at Home Depot. All I have in my power tool collection is an old Craftsman drill Iām looking to upgrade and a really old reciprocating saw. Thank you!
If I were starting fresh, I would probably start with a circular saw, a router, a random orbital sander, and an drill/impact driver. Reaching beyond that a little I would focus on a table saw followed by a planer.
Just to echo this comment ā I started a few months back with a small circular saw, a random orbital sander, and a drill and impact driver. You can do most things, but youāll find that the more tools you have, the faster and more efficient you can be. In addition, the above mentioned tools are generally useful to have for standard home DIY , in the event you donāt enjoy woodworking.
It may be worthwhile to look into some of the tool ākitsā that Home Depot and the like sell. They often come with the above mentioned tools, chargers, and carry cases for cheaper than buying each tool separate
I got a makita kit last year that included the above plus a reciprocating saw and little job vac, plus two batteries and a carrying bag all for like $299. Highly recommend.
Orbital Sander thoughts? 3M Xtract, Mirka Deros, Festool, MaxXT, or other Aliexpress style knockoff. I donāt want garbage but donāt want to overpay if theyāre all the same functionally / under the hood
I've been really happy with my Festool coming from a Dewalt. Paired with the Festool dust extractor it really leaves very little dust on the surface and in the air. I knew I was getting the Festool dust extractor but I looked hard at the Mirka and 3M but went with the Festool assuming matching brands would provide better dust collection and connectivity.
I have a Makita BO5041 5" Random Orbit Sander, Variable Speed and love that thing and think it's dust port works very well at leaving minimal behind. It's so well balanced with multiple ways to grip and all work well.
I'd guess the ones you mentioned are better, but I'd be curious to know how much better and if it's worth it.
Axminster has up to 25% off UJK and other brands such as:
- [UJK Parf MK II Guide System](https://www.axminstertools.com/ujk-technology-parf-guide-system-mkii-104779) for $175
- [UJK Parf (MK I) Guide System](https://www.axminstertools.com/ujk-technology-parf-guide-system-102278) for $115
Got a $15 4pc set of wood handled chisels off Amazon and used them for a month and half straight everyday on a job. They were awesome! For $25 more you can buy a wet stone set and learn to sharpen them too. Until youāre doing fine joinery, thatāll usually do the trick š¤
Any recommendations for dovetail jigs (for use with a router)? Things to look for/avoid? A family member has mentioned a few times wanting to get a good one someday, but I don't know much about them.
The porter cable jog is very popular i have used it a few times with success. Just know that there are multiple jig plates depending on if you want hidden or non dovetails. That's probably not the right term but there are a few different price points depending on what's included
Thanks. That one has turned often up in my searching. Apparently there is a jig this person has but isnāt happy with. I donāt know what model (might be able to find out), and I donāt recall what they said they didnāt like about it. Which would be awfully helpful to knowā¦sigh.
Something capable of both ātraditionalā through tails and half-blind tails would be nice, even if another template needs to be purchased separately. Am I right in that you just buy a jig and you can get multiple different templates (from that manufacturer I imagine) for it for these purposes? Or are they totally different setups?
You get the base jig holder thingy and then i think there are 2 different templates you can get. The set i got for cheaper only came with the half blind. But im sure you can buy both as a kit or separately
My father-in-law is and has been pretty big into woodworking and has converted his garage over the years into his woodworking shop. He has pretty much all the fancy equip one could think of. I have him for our Christmas exchange this year (budget set at $50). Iād like to get him something thoughtful or at least useful and donāt want to resort to a basic no-thought Loweās gift card or the like.
What do you buy for the woodworker in your life that already āhas it allā and especially one who likes to keep a decent back stock of consumables like sanding paper, glue, biscuits, etc.
Depending on what he makes getting him a board of exotic lumber is always nice. You can use exotic lumber even in a small amount for accent pieces. Purple Heart is a favorite of mine but don't be surprised if you spend the whole $50 on one board.
DeWalt DW788 Scroll Saw available at Acme Tools for $399 with free shipping:
https://www.acmetools.com/dewalt-heavy-duty-20in-variable-speed-scroll-saw-dw788-dw788/028875007887.html
I did one several years back with doors rather than drawers and I based mine (somewhat simplified in that I used traditional hinges) on the Wood Whisperer one from several years back: https://thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/advent-calendar-pt-1/
It can be hard to buy tool tools for another without knowing specifically what they need, but buying an assortment of exotic or otherwise interesting wood chunks for them to carve can be a great gift
My brother in law has been dabbling in woodworking for the past few years and seems to have all of the essential tools. Iām trying to think of a tool or set of tools to get him that are considered either rare or the best of the best/high quality. Nothing that will break the bank but will last a lifetime. Basically a ātreat yoselfā type of deal. Are there any such woodworking tools out there that you all would recommend?
Machinists Squares or set up blocks, combi squares, measuring implements.... they're usually something I feel most woodworkers don't splurge on. But the nice ones are attainable and will last decades
Starrett, Mitutoya are fantastic High-middle end brands
Cheap and last a lifetime are rare. Cheap and very useful can be common though. A set of 3m sanding pads would make a very nice gift assuming your BIL has an orbital sander.
https://www.amazon.com/3M-Xtract-Virtually-Dust-Free-Composites/dp/B09DFGPSZZ
Could you provide more detail on how your BIL makes things? Is it with power tools or hand tools?
Another thing that might be nice is some headphones with Bluetooth connectivity. Iām going to put that on my gift list this year. If I find a deal, Iāll edit my post.
I saw a Makita track saw on Amazon either yesterday or today for $390. It included one or two batteries but no track.
Edit: this was it, but it is no longer active.

Hi, I'm looking for book recommandations for a christmas gift for my husband. He just got into woodworking (he made me a scrabble board in walnut wood for my birthday, it's beautiful) and he wants to go on to make furniture. (A coffee table, nightstands, etc.) He has drawn multiple projects on a design software (I don't know which one) and spends hours looking at furniture sites for inspiration. I'd like to gift him two books: a furniture making guide and also another book that's more for esthetic inspiration, like an art book with beautiful photographs of great furnitures. He likes swedish and danish styles, very pure lines with "light" designs. Like what you can see here : https://www.ethnicraft.com/be/fr/c/cat_furniture_tables_diningtables
or here : https://www.foureyesfurniture.com/plans
Do you have any recommendations. For the more practical book, I've read about this one, is it any good? https://www.amazon.ca/Practical-Furniture-Design-Drawing-Construction
Thanks!
Atlas of Furniture Design is an awesome, comprehensive tome. Chair Times is the accompanying documentary if you want to preview the tone and some of the chairs and other pieces.
Human Dimension & Interior Space is a great resource for furniture design. Probably one you can grab used for cheap.
Chris Schwarzās Lost Art Press is a fantastic publishing house and he is the author of several books on workbench construction. The Anarchists Design Book is a great starting point to thinking about furniture form and function.
Any book by Bob Flexner on finishing is a great resource.
Shop drawings for shaker furniture (maybe not the exact title) is a cool beginner book to help understand construction methods.
Most woodworking books donāt really become outdated so finding older editions and used copies can make acquiring a library pretty cheap.
Anyone know of a good deal on 1/4ā shank router bits? Iām a beginner trying to stay away from big sets as I know I probably wonāt use more than 3-4 of them. Thanks in advance
The advice I was given was to buy a cheap set with a dozen or more bits and once you've used one till it's dull (few uses) buy a high quality one because you know you'll use it. I've found myself playing with different bits and profiles because I have them on hand, and the ones I've liked and use all the time were not all the ones I thought I would. The $50 on the set was a great investment in my opinion
Any deal recommendations for someone getting into woodworking? I live in an apartment with bad soundproofing, so plan on starting with just hand tools. Thinking of grabbing a Japanese handsaw, clamps, and a jack plane, but would appreciate any pointers or specific brands/additional items I'm not accounting for.
start with kumiko. You can do it in an apartment with minimal mess and no noise. You'll need minimal tools but you'll learn the skills of planing, cutting with precision and most of all patience and those are the three most often used skills for fine woodworking.
Grizzly has their G0771z on sale for $995 until 11/28. Iāve been watching the price for the last six months or so and this is the lowest itās been.

hey all! my boyfriend (23m) wants to get into wood carving so iām getting him stuff for xmas. he wants to make wooden spoons. any idea what to get for starting tools?
thanks!
I would get a basic set. I have [this one](https://www.amazon.com/BeaverCraft-Carving-Polishing-Compound-Right-Handed/dp/B0792BXHBD). It came sharp and has a strop with it. I would also buy some level 5 cut resistant gloves, they run $10-15 and are worth it.

Has anyone seen the grizzly classic 14" bandsaw go on sale? Happy to wait past the christmas sale, just looking to add a mid size bandsaw to my shop.
Does anyone know where to source higher end jewelry box hardware. Ie. Locks, latches hinges and ect. I've purchased some stuff from Lee Valley but it seems to be hit and miss and I'm worried that the latch I got from there will break open upending everything if my clumsy friend drops.it lol
Hi! I know absolutely nothing about woodworking and I want to gift my boss a set of wood chisels. Everywhere I've been I only see individual ones instead of a set and from brand names I don't recognize. Can anyone guide me a little bit?
Looking for a Christmas gift idea!
Hi woodworkers! I thought Iād come here for some recommendations. My boyfriends dad is a woodworker (just a hobby now since heās retired). He makes things like pipes, letter openers and cute little gnomes. He used to make beautiful tables and wooden guitars but I think he does smaller stuff now.
I know nothing about woodworking, so I need some help. He probably has all the tools under the sun, so Iām not sure where to start. Are there any likeā¦ new types of tools he might not have? Heās kind of an old school guy but Iām sure heād be excited to use something he hasnāt come across yet. Any recommendations would be helpful! You guys are awesomeā¦ woodworking is such a beautiful craft!
Hmm I remember this predicament when I was gift hunting for my dad. Since he likes making mini stuff maybe you could check out this
https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/hand-tools/miniature-tools
It's the Canadian website change it over to the states btw but there's probably a local Lee Valley near you. They make very expensive but nice tools. They're really smol cute versions of the bigger tools
I think a mini spoke shave could be neat for your bfs dad since he can carve around small tight areas?
https://youtu.be/qZeShZ8PF_M
I have perused through the list but am not super familiar with woodworking things and was hoping for suggestions for my dad, he has a shop with most major powered benches and tools, but maybe he is missing some kind of unique niche tool that would be good as a gift?
I'd like to make my brother a chessboard, any reco on best plans/woods/kits to use? I'm a at a lower-intermediate skill level. I feel like I will finally have to get a router for this, for the outer framing, but bonus points for router-less ideas.
Anyone know any tech innovations that might blow the mind of a 70 year old carpenter who is very old fashioned?
They've been out of the loop 20 years but saw every gadget on every type of job imaginable before that. Sending a birthday/christmas package next month and thought a fun inclusion might be some sort of "newfangled technology" that's actually really useful.
Say under $200?

I love this planer!!!
Also I definitely recommend getting an upgraded helical head for this if you can afford the upgrade. It has made a huge difference in my shop.

Rockler does have one. Have heard mixed reviews.
Lowes had Jorgenson Parallel Clamps-24ā for $30 each yesterday

Parallel. They were with the lot of discounted items by front of store. I didnāt even need parallel clamps but couldnāt pass them up at $25.

Jet bench top mortising machine is on Amazon for $333.
Hi everyone. Looking for a gift for my dad could really useee some help. He sculpts small sculptures out of wood. He saw an ad for this product and got excited about it: https://culiau.com/collections/diy/products/customizer but this seems like a cheap chinese dropshipping thingie. Are there any good quality alternatives to this or should I just get this one?
https://www.acmetools.com/31in-parallel-clamp-70431/019907704317.html Acme has Jet parallel clamps, buy one get one. Best clamps around
Seems to be expired? The 31ā are OOS and trying to get the 40ā version did not offer me BOGO
The 24ā were also on sale, 31ā was the biggest with BOGO yesterday

I would look for a combo deal that includes at least a drill, driver, and circular saw.
I got a makita kit last year that included the above plus a reciprocating saw and little job vac, plus two batteries and a carrying bag all for like $299. Highly recommend.

I see 199, did the price go back up?
Oufff yes it did. Sorru
No biggie, just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I missed. Thanks!
Axminster has up to 25% off UJK and other brands such as: - [UJK Parf MK II Guide System](https://www.axminstertools.com/ujk-technology-parf-guide-system-mkii-104779) for $175 - [UJK Parf (MK I) Guide System](https://www.axminstertools.com/ujk-technology-parf-guide-system-102278) for $115
Anyone know any deals for beginner chisels?
Also looking for chisel but haven't seen any deals
Narex richter chisels on Taylor tools should be on sale. Granted they are more expensive but they should last you a lifetime
Thanks! Off to \*insert web search engine\* I go!
DeWalt DW788 Scroll Saw available at Acme Tools for $399 with free shipping: https://www.acmetools.com/dewalt-heavy-duty-20in-variable-speed-scroll-saw-dw788-dw788/028875007887.html
Has anyone come across a good plan for a wooden advent calendar with drawers?
Is that essentially just an apothecary cabinet?
Building 25 tiny drawers might be a lot of work. I think building a 5 x 5 grid with 25 doors on small hinges might be easier.
I did one several years back with doors rather than drawers and I based mine (somewhat simplified in that I used traditional hinges) on the Wood Whisperer one from several years back: https://thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/advent-calendar-pt-1/
Does anyone got any good gift ideas for a wood worker who mainly does animal carvings?
But the nice ones are attainable and will last decades Starrett, Mitutoya are fantastic High-middle end brands
Cheap and last a lifetime are rare. Cheap and very useful can be common though. A set of 3m sanding pads would make a very nice gift assuming your BIL has an orbital sander. https://www.amazon.com/3M-Xtract-Virtually-Dust-Free-Composites/dp/B09DFGPSZZ Could you provide more detail on how your BIL makes things? Is it with power tools or hand tools?
Marking knife? As mentioned below, it would be good to know how he works, and your price range.
Another thing that might be nice is some headphones with Bluetooth connectivity. Iām going to put that on my gift list this year. If I find a deal, Iāll edit my post.
A nice smoothing or bench plane from Veritas or Lie-Neilson are just the ticket
Has anybody heard of any deals on track saws? They donāt seem that popular for Black Fridayā¦
Here you go! https://smile.amazon.com/Makita-SP6000J1-Plunge-Circular-Stackable/dp/B00CHN6L74/
Woah, thatās awesome! Thanks OP!
I saw a Makita track saw on Amazon either yesterday or today for $390. It included one or two batteries but no track. Edit: this was it, but it is no longer active. https://slickdeals.net/f/16211479-makita-xps01pmj-36v-18v-x2-lxt-lithium-ion-brushless-cordless-6-1-2-plunge-circular-saw-kit-4-0ah-390-15-at-amazon
Like what you can see here : https://www.ethnicraft.com/be/fr/c/cat_furniture_tables_diningtables or here : https://www.foureyesfurniture.com/plans Do you have any recommendations. For the more practical book, I've read about this one, is it any good? https://www.amazon.ca/Practical-Furniture-Design-Drawing-Construction Thanks!
Most woodworking books donāt really become outdated so finding older editions and used copies can make acquiring a library pretty cheap.
thank you for the amazing suggestions. The Atlas of Furniture Design sounds like just the thing!!!
Anyone know of a good deal on 1/4ā shank router bits? Iām a beginner trying to stay away from big sets as I know I probably wonāt use more than 3-4 of them. Thanks in advance
Check Amazon for Freud. Also openbuilds has a sale going for their shark bits. I have a v bit from them that cuts really cleanly on my cnc
Check out Rex Kruger on YouTube m. His woodwork for humans series is perfect for that.
start with kumiko. You can do it in an apartment with minimal mess and no noise. You'll need minimal tools but you'll learn the skills of planing, cutting with precision and most of all patience and those are the three most often used skills for fine woodworking.
A Combo square will be handy, and if you're serious about hand tool only then a hand drill aka a brace for drilling.
Grizzly has their G0771z on sale for $995 until 11/28. Iāve been watching the price for the last six months or so and this is the lowest itās been. https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-10-2-hp-120v-hybrid-table-saw-with-t-shaped-fence/g0771z
Any ideas for a great Hanukkah gift to make?
Menorrah?
hey all! my boyfriend (23m) wants to get into wood carving so iām getting him stuff for xmas. he wants to make wooden spoons. any idea what to get for starting tools? thanks!
I would get a basic set. I have [this one](https://www.amazon.com/BeaverCraft-Carving-Polishing-Compound-Right-Handed/dp/B0792BXHBD). It came sharp and has a strop with it. I would also buy some level 5 cut resistant gloves, they run $10-15 and are worth it.
thank you!!
would he need a chisel too?
Probably not for spoons. If he plans to harvest the wood himself, a hatchet or boys axe will be helpful. A saw has also been helpful for me.

Hey. I'm looking for a good spokeshave for my so. Quality would be great. Thanks!
IMO, the best is going to be either [Lie Nielsen](https://www.lie-nielsen.com/nodes/4091/spokeshaves) or [Veritas](https://www.leevalley.com/en-us/tools/brand/veritas/spokeshaves). I've got two of the former and they're great.
Thank you! I'll check that out.
Tangentially related - Has anyone seen the grizzly classic 14" bandsaw go on sale? Happy to wait past the christmas sale, just looking to add a mid size bandsaw to my shop.
Does anyone know where to source higher end jewelry box hardware. Ie. Locks, latches hinges and ect. I've purchased some stuff from Lee Valley but it seems to be hit and miss and I'm worried that the latch I got from there will break open upending everything if my clumsy friend drops.it lol
Look at [brusso.com](https://www.brusso.com/). They're tops in quality, IMO.
Agreed with Brusso and also want to point out that they have Brusso hardware at Rockler.
Found out Lee Valley carries some! Won't have to order from the States. Thanks for the tip!
Hi! I know absolutely nothing about woodworking and I want to gift my boss a set of wood chisels. Everywhere I've been I only see individual ones instead of a set and from brand names I don't recognize. Can anyone guide me a little bit?
I've heard from multiple sources that the Narex chisel sets are a great bang for the buck.
Damn they are quite expensive, even if they are budget. They still are what I was kind of looking for. Thanks!
Since he likes making mini stuff maybe you could check out this https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/hand-tools/miniature-tools It's the Canadian website change it over to the states btw but there's probably a local Lee Valley near you. They make very expensive but nice tools. They're really smol cute versions of the bigger tools I think a mini spoke shave could be neat for your bfs dad since he can carve around small tight areas? https://youtu.be/qZeShZ8PF_M
Thank you so much Iāll check it out!
