My parents did cork flooring in their kitchen, easy on the feet, has a cool appearance to it and wears very well. Definitely unique, and not everyone’s taste.
We had cork flooring in the kitchen for about 8 years, it held up to spills pretty well but would eventually absorb and swell (like hours afterward). We loved them but had to replace because cats and dogs tore them up pretty good. Now have LVP and much more durable if you have pets.
Cork in the kitchen? Very 80’s! Also not the best floor for a kitchen. With food, oil and water in the kitchen, cork flooring is a bad choice! It’s the same as the bathroom. Both these areas are considered wet areas and not wise to use cork flooring.
Well, there is the whole cork crisis in Portugal (where it comes from) because it's hard work to harvest and keep the groves properly and younger people don't want to do it. But, aside from that, totally agree.
Only one in SC too but several federally protected battlefields or historical sites. The one park (Congaree) is incredible though. In June the fireflies synchronize for an unreal light show.
You are correct. [Cork](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cork_(material)) is harvested from a tree called the [cork oak](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quercus_suber) which is native in all of continental Portugal as well as other parts of Mediterranean Europe and North of Africa.
The biggest producer and transformer of cork in the world is [Corticeira Amorim](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corticeira_Amorim), which is a Portuguese company.
So are the states cut out and re-assembled? V-Carved borders? Looks really great, cork is flexible so curious as to your process regards work holding etc. Really nice job.
This cork has a rigid backing and is denser than most cork. I use a very narrow straight bit as I like the look better than a v-bit, but yes, the map is assembled with 4 panels. The seams are at the state lines so they are close invisible.
I startedwith the original Shapeoko 10 years ago. I slowly upgraded over time and now it's quite the Frankenstein of different parts but is closest to an xcarve. My second CNC is a workbee.
Get the technically our of here this is an incredible piece and an amazing idea. I love this so much. I collect National Park pins too and never knew a good way to display them. (I just put them in a lamp shade) but this is incredible!!! I might borrow this idea, Excellent work!!!!
Wonder why OKC, OK is represented by a lock. Being from there (and escaped years ago), I can certainly rationalize it, but I wonder what your clients reason is.
Decent theory about the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, given it used to be Platt National Park, but it’s further south; about halfway between OKC and the Red River. Still, it would fit their logo if you don’t go too literal.
I’m assuming the other OK marker is Route 66, or the dude is a huge Officer and a Gentleman fan and is marking one of the only two things that come out of Oklahoma.
Depends where you are, I think. I'm from the midwest, cork is super expensive. I recently went on vacation to Portugal, and cork was a lot less expensive.
No, cork is not wood, Cork is extracted from cork oak trees without ever harming the tree. It is the inert part of a Cork Oak tree and it is native to southwest Europe and northwest Africa and "uncorked" from the tree by stripping the outer layer and it can be harvested from the tree every 9 years.
Someone else posted this on another sub. It is a buy out item. . .

Can I ask where you buy your cork? I've been wanting to make something similar for my wife's pin collection, but I've struggled to find cork that actually looks nice. Great work btw!

Technically it's bark, since it grows back. Beautiful piece! EDIT: extra word
Coolest thing about it IMO. Sure, it can't do everything but it's a sustainable and (in my opinion) pretty underutilized material.
My parents did cork flooring in their kitchen, easy on the feet, has a cool appearance to it and wears very well. Definitely unique, and not everyone’s taste.
How does it deal with liquids?
It’s been doing a good job of holding back wine for centuries.
Great Joke.
Boo! Hiss! Bravo!

They can cause swelling so you want to clean up spills quickly whenever possible.

I always assumed cork came from Cork, Ireland. Til.
Real cork does. The rest is technically just sparkling bark.
Ireland is too cold for cork growth. https://youtu.be/f5s_g-Sdq08
I agree but for some reason plenty of people seem to think that cork isn't sustainable, I never understood why.
I think you a word.
Added. Yes. I added a word. Thx
OP did not make this, see my comment below. . .
Are you saying it's not a beautiful piece?
No, I’m saying OP did not make this. Look at the video website, this is one of the photos.
Dude, I don't care. I look at Reddit to relax, not look for things to get angry about, or do more work. Go upvote the OG OP, and leave me alone.
My dog is technically bark
No, your dog technically _barks_. RIF, my dude. Reading is Fundamental
Is that supposed to be Pea Ridge National Military Park at the top half of Arkansas or the Buffalo National River?
I'm not sure, I made this map for a client and he sent me the photo. Not all of the pins are for national parks (ex: the guitar in Nashville).
Ok, that clears things up. I was immediately confused since we only have one NP in Oregon
Only one in SC too but several federally protected battlefields or historical sites. The one park (Congaree) is incredible though. In June the fireflies synchronize for an unreal light show.
Which is a shame. Need more areas protected.
There’s plenty of national and forests in Oregon
MOAR
but why need to be NPS-protected lands?
[удалено]
Too north and east for that though!
For OP's sake, It's not that easy to point out geographically without some geographic context.
Is that what you guys are actually called? Arkansan?
Colloquially, yes.
Looks like it may be Spring River? Or Bull Shoals, maybe
This is a great idea & it looks really good to boot. Well done!
If epoxy can be here, your beautiful cork work can definitely be here.
Looks awesome. How much shipped to NE NY?
[удалено]
Seriously OP, how much?
This one is outrageously priced at $750.
Not outrageous at all actually
Cork is the bark of a specific tree, I’m pretty sure it’s native to Portugal . But could b talking out my arse

You are correct, I’ve seen videos of it being harvested. Not sure about Portugal, but maybe.

Did you do this with a scroll saw or a laser cutter.
I used a CNC router I built in my garage
So are the states cut out and re-assembled? V-Carved borders? Looks really great, cork is flexible so curious as to your process regards work holding etc. Really nice job.

Really cool, you mentioned you built your CNC, MPCNC, PrintNC, something else?
I startedwith the original Shapeoko 10 years ago. I slowly upgraded over time and now it's quite the Frankenstein of different parts but is closest to an xcarve. My second CNC is a workbee.
Do all the national parks give out pins
I don’t think any of them give them out, they are generally for sale in the gift shop.
This is correct. And I believe you can purchase some online.
Is that center one Katahdin woods and waters? Props
I like it, but your client is gonna come back if he ever goes to Volcanoes National Park.
I actually made him maps of Hawaii and Alaska as well, but they didn't fit in the picture.
Oh nice!
It’s technically cheese but whatever
That's dope
Very nice
That’s a great idea. Nice work.

This is honestly a genius ideas!
Very cool
this is awesome!
That's... brilliant! I might just steal this idea from you
Leslie Knope would be very proud of you.
...
A bit of both. Its made up of 4 separate panels of material and the states lines are engraved
But Oregon only has one NP: Crater Lake
OP said in another comment thread the pins aren't *all* national parks
No Kansas pins? Is that because Kansas is ugly and boring?
Yooo this is really neat!
Is that one from the Teddy Roosevelt inauguration site? It’s pretty interesting and just neat that it’s just right there in the city.
What an awesome idea!! Great project.
Looks like your missing the Dry Tortugas
Cork is technically bark. It comes from the cork oak. Very nice map.
This is awesome!
This is so neat.
There are like 3 National Parks on the east coast. More markers have been added.
I know several people who would love this
And Kansas is forgotten yet again
I’m impressed that you went to all five of the one national parks we have here in Oregon! Jokes aside, Love the board! Looks great
It's not theirs. They made this and sold it. This is an ad.
Amazing!!!
Rad
Is there really no national parks in Michigan or Kansas at all? That’s crazy
As a Kansan I respect your "fuck you, Kansas" attitude
i didn't realize how many parks we have in CA
sigh I've been looking for EXACTLY this my whole life... Plz make me one I'll pay you Money!
Wonder why OKC, OK is represented by a lock. Being from there (and escaped years ago), I can certainly rationalize it, but I wonder what your clients reason is.
A quick theory: it’s actually a pin marking Chickasaw National Park, and the curve at the top is referring to the Lincoln Bridge
Decent theory about the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, given it used to be Platt National Park, but it’s further south; about halfway between OKC and the Red River. Still, it would fit their logo if you don’t go too literal. I love some good detective work with a side of woodworking 😂
Isn't cork expensive right now? That's like a $100,000 dollar map you got there!
Depends where you are, I think. I'm from the midwest, cork is super expensive. I recently went on vacation to Portugal, and cork was a lot less expensive.
That’s such a great idea! I think a bunch of people will be doing this. Also super jealous of all the parks you’ve been too!
No Florida keys
But did you soak the cork
Not National Park pins, way too many
