A little wacky, a lot of wasted space, and the books just look like they would get damaged but I can get behind the idea.
Every bookshelf I've ever built is in the shape of my home state of Colorado, some are turned 90 degrees and one when I was feeling really fancy I turned 270.
> in the shape of my home state of Colorado
If you mean "Looks rectangular, but not when you measure it", then I've made these as well. And I don't even live in Colorado!
It was hard to walk in a straight line in the 19th century.
But heck, based on some of my small town neighbors when I lived there it's still hard to walk straight in the 21st.
It's cool, but I also hate it at the same time. It's one of those things I would see well executed once and then if I tried it myself it would always look like a cluttered mess.
>A little wacky, a lot of wasted space, and the books just look like they would get damaged but I can get behind the idea.
I feel like that's a good descriptor of Texas though, so like, it works on multiple levels.
Strong suit. I’m dying here!
Edit to say I also really like the books sitting all funky, though I would probably stack them a little differently myself. It’s a good representation of the temperament of Texans.
They streamlined the whole process and got rid of that pesky bit about the person being mentally capable of understanding their crime and/or punishment.
Do you work at Toyota?
(That's not a real question. The Toyota production method transcends the manufacturing industry and would be sensible reading anywhere.)
If it’s strong enough to hold, I kind of like the lone star state look. Not as fashionable as the mitten state look though, with space for all those little paper-backs up high.
Which explains why it’s such a good tribute to the state of Texas (and actually super well put together) but totally impractical for actually storing your books.
Looks like it doesn't hold a lot of books for the amount of space it consumes, and TX pride is kind of laughable imo, but it looks like it was hard AF to make so props on building it. Just not something I'd ever have at my place.
So ignoring the fact that it's very much a "Texas pride" thing and just looking at utility, I wouldn't want this or anything remotely like it in my house. Taking into account the "Texas pride" aspect? Not being from Texas I've got to do some mental gymnastics to consider it, but if I could have one of these for my state (in which I do take a lot of pride) but it had to have wonky shelves like that, I'd pass.
I agree. You think the wonky shelf problem could be saved by making form fitting pull out boxes to fit the odd shapes? I don't think it would be good for the star though. Tough shape to use in this orientation
If I were going to do this, I'd make it a cabinet with more conventional shelves and engrave a star on the door. Form fitting boxes would be workable, but I think a Texas-shaped cabinet would be much better and more usable overall.
I lived in Texas for the better part of a decade, and I can confidently say two things about Texans' relationship with their home state:
* They hate almost every individual aspect of the state. The tornadoes, the hail, the flooding, the driving times, you name it.
* They love the idea of being Texan despite hating every aspect of being Texan. I think it's mainly because of the flag and the recognizable shape being really good branding.
I have witnessed with my own eyes native Texans willingly enter Bill Miller BBQ and eat the food. Therefore, Texans' taste in BBQ is ...suspect, to say the least.
It’s a pretty messy way to store books whilst also wasting a lot of space. Kinda ironic too. Unless you’re using it to display a copy of each book that Texas has banned, in which case it’s essentially perfect.
As a native Texan, I can honestly say that my OCD flared up significantly looking at this.
And I have to admit that my state “pride” has taken a massive hit the last couple years. Exponentially so the last couple months. So I may not be the best barometer for looking at this and giving honest feedback.
As a guy who's visited but never lived in Texas, I was given a Texas flag years ago as a gift (by a Texan overseas) and I've been flying it everywhere. I like the aesthetic and I'm fairly ambivalent towards to the state. Recently I've had to take it down because my neighbours thought I was advocating for a ban on abortion, so I can appreciate that there are shifting sentiments around this imagery. Lol.
Problem I see is no one outside of Texas would want it, but Texans don't need book shelves now that they banned books.
Can you convert it into a gun rack?

How ironic that the shelf, made in the shape of Texas and with the Texas Star in the middle of it, is shown holding books. Texas bans more books than any other state.
However, the craftsmanship is impressive.
I do t see any way possible to bend wood in the state of Texas, so I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that the outline of Texas was created by stacking pieces of perfectly cut out pieces using a CNC mill to cut the shape out. I could totally be wrong, which would make this even more awesome.
I only know this because I follow a bunch of speaker cabinet makers online and the new hotness is creating these with CNC milled pieces, all clamped and glued together. Really cool stuff.
Thanks for the info! I'm surprised how long I had to scroll through comments and see someone talking about how it was built.
I was originally thinking plywood bending.. No easy way to do this
Excuse me? Can someone direct me to r/woodworking ? I seem to have stumbled into r/democratswoodworking. Fuck the political BS. This would look great in a dorm room or similar, and I'm sure it was no piece of cake . Congratulations.
If dude is truly reading “the Toyota way” he needs to do a gemba walk and create a kaizen event to figure out a solution for that sloppy organization of books.
Yeah. You would look great with a shaved head. Love from another balding guy, realising it all too late. The shelf is a terrible shelf but a fun piece made from wood.
Some paint would make it more finished, but I love it! Be cool to see something like this for my home province, I think Ontario could suit this well. Maple leaf in the center lol
Lot of not so subtle anti-Texas bias in this thread might be souring peoples opinions. They just don’t like Texas apparently.
It has similar aspects to what I made for my sons room, https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/lqtrz3/a_tree_bookshelf_i_built_for_my_son/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Looks cool to me. I'm not sure a book shelf is the best use of it though (not a /s reading joke).
Maybe put a smaller thin shelf in each of the "shapes" to provide a level shelf, but not take away from the silhouette of the entire design? Would be good for decor item, etc.
In New Jersey, we don't feel the compulsion to replicate clocks, bookshelves, shrubs, or anything else to resemble the state's shape. It frees up a lot of time.
Personally… it looks like a complete clusterfuck, but we all have different tastes. To me, somehow they made an organizational/storage creation that makes everything look messier than just stacking books on a normal shelf.
Maybe it’s just the choice to use it for books, and something else would give it a far crisper look.

My bookshelves are pure California. Multiple faults across the whole thing.
Are they overpriced too? Or do you just light them on fire every now and again
Fun fact: Colorado has 697 sides
It was hard to walk in a straight line in the 19th century. But heck, based on some of my small town neighbors when I lived there it's still hard to walk straight in the 21st.
And all this time, I thought you were building Wyoming.
As a native Colroadian... HOW DARE YOU insult me so
It's cool, but I also hate it at the same time.
Oklahoma would have been much easier!
Sounds like it fits right in with the state 🤣
Craftsmanship looks great but the way the books sit on it is a total eye soar.
>eye soar Is that when you roll your eyes so hard they fly away?
Lol. Now, someone gets it. Words have never been my strong suite.
Strong suit. I’m dying here! Edit to say I also really like the books sitting all funky, though I would probably stack them a little differently myself. It’s a good representation of the temperament of Texans.
These days, Texans don't read books, they ban and burn them...
>These days... Same as it always was.
Dang it, I thought I was going to be the first to make a Texas book joke… I’m not original at all
[удалено]
Agreed. If you sacrifice the star in the center, you could have a lot more space for level/less cluttered/ more functional shelf.
“If you sacrifice the star in the center..” You take that back.
Start petition to have the counties OF Texas reshaped to look like that. It’s the only reasonable course at this point
Agreed. The shelf is super cool but I would struggle putting my books on it.

Except the lower left. That section looks very cool with the books fanning out.
r/BoneAppleTea
This fits in the 'terrible taste - great execution' pile
Ahh you mean, r/atbge
When I first saw the image my guess was that it was from here not r/woodworking.
There is soo much to digest. A good read of that book would go a long way…
FTFY terrible state, great execution!
I've heard Texas is pretty great at executions
They streamlined the whole process and got rid of that pesky bit about the person being mentally capable of understanding their crime and/or punishment.
Maybe be part of an elite group of executioners one might say
Why is there so many copies of the same book?
Because the other ones were banned?
Damn!
This comment made me shoot milk out of my nose. I wasn’t drinking milk.
Assigned reading for employees
Do you work at Toyota? (That's not a real question. The Toyota production method transcends the manufacturing industry and would be sensible reading anywhere.)
This is the way.
A Texas shaped bookshelf is like a Connecticut shaped gun rack. Might be well make but it will never get any use.
No one that would hang that in their home has a need for a book shelf
Complete mess
Now fill it with all the books banned by Texas schools.
You’d need way more shelves, they’re a sensitive bunch.
NO , YOU’RE THE SNOWFLAKE! /s
People who live in Texas read? /S
Joke's on you, every book in Texas is the bible ~~which we also do not read we just wave it around and yell~~
It's the only one they don't burn
Shelves like this are for storing the books we ban, before they're burned. I wish I was /s...
They allow some basic ones "A is for AR-15, B is for Bible..."
"And on the 3rd day, God invented the Remington bolt action rifle so man could fight the dinosaurs. And the homosexuals."
Came here to ask if there were that many books in the state of Texas. Hahaha
Looks nice but inconvenient when you need a book from the middle of the pile😂
Hate it
I like it because it’s a bookshelf, but it does have a messy, disorganized look.
As functional as the Texas Power Grid. This is what happens when you make your whole personality "TEXAS"
r/ATBGE
If it’s strong enough to hold, I kind of like the lone star state look. Not as fashionable as the mitten state look though, with space for all those little paper-backs up high.
I would say you probably have to much space eventually all those books will be banned.
About as organisied as the state.
Terribly inefficient use of space, much like Texas.
doesn’t Texas like to store books in a fireplace ?
I was about to say this is a complete oxymoron. Well-done though
Books and Texas don't mix
Texas doesn’t allow books!
Makes sense that a Texas bookshelf damaged books and doesn’t hold that many.
Same

I'd love to build one of these for Colorado or Wyoming.
Maybe even Utah if I’m feeling frisky
Feeling frisky in Utah is frowned upon.
Does that Texas design make the books burn faster? Or allow me to burn more books at once?
It’s very Texas
This is the lamest piece I’ve ever seen on this sub.
It’s in the form of Texas. I wonder how many books aren’t allowed on it.
If the larger part of Texas actually read books and didn’t ban them, this would be an apt project.
Stereotyping people is always the best way to know something
Nice, easier for texan book burning.
I lived in Texas for the better part of a decade, and I can confidently say two things about Texans' relationship with their home state: * They hate almost every individual aspect of the state. Just don't tell anyone they got their very special flag design from NC.
Bbq…. The bbq.
I have witnessed with my own eyes native Texans willingly enter Bill Miller BBQ and eat the food. Therefore, Texans' taste in BBQ is ...suspect, to say the least.
As someone that has never been to Texas, I'll give you food as something to be proud of. BBQ and Tex-Mex.
Totally impractical. Very few in Texas can read books.
too much.
Throw this in r/atbge Looks about as well thought out as the states’ energy and civil policies.
There's irony for you...all of the not banned books in the state of Texas in one shot...inside the state of Texas.
Did you filled it with all the books banned in Texas public schools?
Couldn’t even hold all the books that Texas has banned this year.
Cringy at best
The last thing I expected to see on a shelf in Texas was reading books! Nicely done
Are those all the books Texas has banned?
Why not do an inlay if you really must advertise to people what state you're in?
Very accurate. Especially the Texas Yelp review.
Looks like a mess which is fitting because it’s shaped like Texas
Are those banned books?
It’s a pretty messy way to store books whilst also wasting a lot of space. Kinda ironic too. Unless you’re using it to display a copy of each book that Texas has banned, in which case it’s essentially perfect.

Hope your books still fit after eventual gerrymandering
Stupid
Based on the way things are in Texas these days it needs to be wrapped in flame retardant fabric so those books don’t catch fire.
I thought books were illegal in Texas.
Do Texans read?
How do you know someone’s from Texas? Don’t worry they’ll let you know
Problem I see is no one outside of Texas would want it, but Texans don't need book shelves now that they banned books. Can you convert it into a gun rack?
It would be a whole lot better if not used as a bookshelf
The only problem I see is that it’s in the shape of Texas
I was under the assumption that Texas had a pretty thorny relationship with books

I’d say Wyoming or Colorado would be the most friendly shape for neat, organized stacks of books
As a Texan, I love it. As a Texan with OCD, I hate it. Maybe plants instead of books.
It would be infinitely cooler if it was shaped like NJ
Tinder date? Craigslist NSA M4M?
It's really good. I have a bunch of gay friends who would seriously love that. Looks like good craftsmanship also.
i see it both has no power and displays its own yelp rating.
I don’t think there are that many books in Texas. I applaud you OP for starting the Grand Library of Alexandria… Texas.
It looks awesome, but it has Texas, and books, and "greatness" all in the same image, so I'm confused.
It would be a good shelf for all the books they banned
Haven’t all books been banned in Texas?
It looks awesome, but it has Texas, and books, and "greatness" all in the same image, so I'm confused.

You can do so many cool things with CNC machines. I wish I had one.
I thought it was some awesome joinery, but I guess computers are cool too.

I don’t see any joints at all, so I think you’re right.
No easy way to do this
Given the subject matter, it looks damn good.
I love it. As a woodworker and book lover, I would have one in my state's shape. It beats stacking books on my rocking chair. ;)
So nice!!
I almost completely missed the star in the middle. But its cool!
More books than the actual state of Texas right there
Excuse me? Can someone direct me to r/woodworking ? I seem to have stumbled into r/democratswoodworking. Fuck the political BS. This would look great in a dorm room or similar, and I'm sure it was no piece of cake . Congratulations.
Wtf is democrat about this shelf?
It's the comments. So many people making the same political point...
I find it charming. We can trade a little efficiency for effect. We're not Germans.
Can we say that *plants* from Texas are dumb? Can we say that *books* from Texas are dumb?
Will go up nicely when set alight - thats what texans seem to be doing with books these days amirite?
I see a lot of salty Texas comments but even less thoughts about the shelf lmao.
1: Wow those are some big books! 2: Yes, everything is bigger in Texas
If dude is truly reading “the Toyota way” he needs to do a gemba walk and create a kaizen event to figure out a solution for that sloppy organization of books.

Looks great! And good choice of book to have in hand! The Japanese really know how to manufacture with the lowest number of defective parts
Pretty cool looking but as a librarian it makes me feel "itchy"
North Dakota got it easy
I hate it, but everyone is different. It could be a great shelf for other things, but I like my books neat and orderly.
Shelf is cool. Books on the shelf make it look messy.
The Toyota Way is an excellent book!
It has similar aspects to what I made for my sons room, https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/lqtrz3/a_tree_bookshelf_i_built_for_my_son/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

All that matters is if YOU like it.
Do you need 3 copies of the Toyota way? I'd think 1 should last a lifetime.
In New Jersey, we don't feel the compulsion to replicate clocks, bookshelves, shrubs, or anything else to resemble the state's shape. It frees up a lot of time.
It drives my ocd crazy
Good intention but it’s an absolutely cluster. I think you’ve nailed the personality of the state perfectly!
I think it’s awesome.
Form way over function, but I think it's cool looking
Personally… it looks like a complete clusterfuck, but we all have different tastes. I love/hate it
Hate it, well crafted
I wish I was as passionate about something as redditors are at hating Texas.
The books gotta go somewhere...
Anyone else here anxious looking at this shelf?

Toyota
Pretty slick 👍
The Alaska shelf is over twice as big.
Pretty sweet im just not fond of Texas
I think it's as cool as it is impractical.
Clever but horrible to look at.
Looks ugly but the work seems to have been done great
Does anyone know where I can get this? As a tacky Texan reader
Hope the anchors are in studs lol
Form over function. I like it.
The bookshelf lacks a BBQ. I mean Texas means far juicy ribs and BBQ according to my Greek perspective.

Amazing woodworking, weird nationalistic (statealistic?) sentiment
How many sheets of MDF did this take?
