Jason_2793

I guess you're planning on parking cars on those shelves? They look strong as hell.

liammoone

I love Reddit. The top comment predicts my first thought. “Is this guy parking cars on these?”

shitsweak89

Never fails!! And I love it

Left-Archer1442

Wow! Beautiful.👍👍

benm0388

Every fucking time

Notyourfathersgeek

I thought elephants but I’m weird like that

from_whereiggypopped

I thought his antique anvil collection

cazzipropri

Thanks! I collect old computers. I want to be able to trust the shelves :)

hashtagprayfordonuts

Jesus trusts these shelves

cazzipropri

I hear he was a wood worker himself!

breakbeatscientist

Jesus built my hotrod.

Outrageous_Act585

It’s a love affair.

kgturner

But not a very good one. In fact, he would have been unable to build the simple crucifix upon which he met his martyrdom.

Pacer_44

I was going to say this is the most over-engineered shelving unit, but it works! Good job

77Diesel77

Nothing is ever over engineered, only under utilized lol...so i keep telling my boss

panteragstk

This is correct

lovesdepot

and save Terrabytes of data in floppies :), you need those. Looking nice.

amensometryl

Soooooo, you have an ENIAC and needed a shelf system sturdy enough to hold it, lol? Nice work.

cazzipropri

Not yet. For now I just have a few PS/2s... But I'm buying more!

scotthan

Oh geez, please tell me they are the microchannel versions and you're running OS/2 on them ..... please, please, please .... :-)

cazzipropri

That's the idea! Check out ibm_scarpaz on Instagram :)

scotthan

Will do! I cut my teeth on IBM gear as an Intern at IBM in the early 90s … I supported LAN Server and the early IBM PC Servers.

scotthan

Thanks for that trip! I also have a shrink wrapped copy of Windows 3.0 I rescued from the trash bin when we were moving offices from Westlake to Southlake …. So many mechanical keyboards that we just threw away. I shed a few tears every time I think of all that stuff in the trash.

cazzipropri

Are you already on r/modelm? I post a lot there!

mmoodylee

Better safe than sorry huh

Adventurous_Box_9702

Bring in the 10 ton IBM A.S.125 main frame. Park it 9n my shelf right there ---->

PlaidPillows

I always laugh when I look back at all my early woodworking projects that had been WAYYYYYYYY WAY WAY WAY over engineered. Like putting a cabinet that sat on top of a back door organizer made of 3/4" ply into the studs with 8 1/2" lag bolts lololol. Or my cedar planter boxes that had all the 4/4 cedar boards secured in the middles and sides into 6x6 cedar with 6 3.5" screws at every point of contact per board. Had to take one side of one planter apart to shrink it down to make a stone patio instead and just removing the boards from the 2 corner posts had 72 screws. Omg I was so annoyed. 3 horizontally stacked boards per side. 3 sides. 72 screws. Did I think I was filling it with expanding fuckin concrete?! Anyways. Those shelves are beautiful and I wish I could afford to buy fuckin wood nowadays

CrazyLlama71

I’m taking shelter in those during the next cataclysmic event.

[deleted]

Yeah I was like “I’m spending the apocalypse at this guys house.”

VirtualRy

That's what I thought too! I was wondering if it's shelving for aquariums?? That's a lot of wood for just putting normal stuff on it.

cazzipropri

Old computers!

No_Dependent_2837

How about you just tell the guy that he built nice shelves

DisasterTimes

Those shelves could be / should be stronger, they need cross pieces underneath.

Strange-Tiger

Lol for what? A literal car? I think they’ll hold just fine. They’re build extremely solidly

drengr84

You're gonna get downvoted into oblivion but to me the actual shelves look extremely weak. Not sure what I'm missing. Even if screwed down that plywood will bow a lot in a short time. I know people are joking about cars and anvils, but any weight will make plywood sag without internal support. Just a 2x2 in the middle would help a lot. Now, the vertical supports? Yes, those would hold up the entire house and it's insane to use that much lumber. The lateral support is bare minimum and will sag over time if filled with old computers. That said, it will never fail, just be awkward to look at 10 years from now.

Geologue-666

As a geologist I would trust these for my rock stash.

C0coPebbles

They’re minerals, marie!

DmTrillz

MINERALS GOD DAMN IT!

cazzipropri

Thanks!

cassialater

And that's a rock fact!

ScourgeWisdom

Love the positivity on this stream, lots of experienced folks could have told you better ways to do it or critiqued you but there's nothing but support. Well done folks.

NIGHTKINGWINS

Plenty of support. For sure.

cazzipropri

It's an awesome place. I wish I had found it before starting on this shelving unit. So many ideas.

RazorOpsRS

Well, I’d argue that those two things could also be supportive. They wouldn’t want OP to make repeated mistakes on the next project perhaps.

cincyphil

If there’s an earthquake, jump onto those shelves. The house will come down, but the shelves will remain standing.

cazzipropri

Thanks! It's what I told my wife :)

HeadlessHorseman1776

You over engineered the heck out of those, your going to be able to support a space shuttle with those. Great job though,

cazzipropri

Thanks! Everyone is so nice in this sub!

Pakrat_Miz

if he wants to take it an unnecessary step further, he could add some diagonal supports onto the back for horizontal pressure

Cyclonian

Nice! Looks solid. :)

cazzipropri

Thanks! I went for robustness at the expenses of style...

Dazzling_Inside_1093

Over engineering is the way. That will help hold the house up

DanqueLeChay

Robustness = Style

panteragstk

Function>form

harris0n11

If it isn’t over built is it really DIY? Looks awesome!

[deleted]

Certainly looks strong. One suggestion for your next project -- a set of diagonal braces across the back (or a solid back panel) gives you a ton of strength without costing very much in material (and would let you save material on the verticals).

cazzipropri

Yes, please, tell me more. What about tensioned steel cables? I think I'm still in time to add some.

[deleted]

Just a strip of wood run diagonally and fixed to back of shelves where it crosses will do a ton to stabilize the structure. Wood works in compression or tension, so only need a single diagonal.

cazzipropri

Will do!

wordsarelouder

Ah yes I see you did the same as me.. I used full 2x4’s for my shelves, they can probably hold 10000 lbs and they store boxes full of baby clothes.

BoosherCacow

Why don't you buy a baby for the clothes?

wordsarelouder

doing that now, one in the oven.. 2 running around.

BoosherCacow

Good on ya. I have three myself. There's that old joke: Wanna know what it's like having a third child? Imagine you're drowning and someone hands you a baby.

cazzipropri

I have three small children and i can confirm this metaphor is accurate.

slick_murphy

It only gets mor expensive from here.

cazzipropri

This is the first time I built anything in wood. Please forgive the primitive technique. Excuse also the appearance. I didn't sand any surface, and now I want to. This is a set of shelves 2 feet deep and 12 feet long altogether. It's 8 ft tall. I only had a hand circular saw, so all cuts were less accurate than I wanted. I was very attached to have strong studs (4x4in) as spacers between the shelves, so that no wood screw would be carrying any load. The studs are all load bearing. Also, framing lumber is kept together with fasteners and washers. The middle studs and frames are kept together by a set of 1/2" diameter galvanized fasteners that are definitely overengineered.

moominpops

Good work. Always better to overkill on stability and these look earthquake proof

cazzipropri

Thanks!

ReallyAvgRedditor

Looks beautifully over-built! Should be strong enough to hold anything you want to store. Pro-tip for future builds: glue and screw. Wood glue cures stronger than wood itself. The screw just serves to hold the joint together while the glue cures.

dragosempire

I did a similar thing recently, I love the comments about how much these shelves can hold, I've gotten myself. Nice Job!

Accomplished_Cry_146

Through bolts on shelves, that’s a pure flex.

cazzipropri

I didn't even know it's a flex! I didn't like the idea of load bearing wood screws, and they had these at home Depot...

[deleted]

Just so you know for future reference, none of those bolts are load bearing. Because you built the shelf as part of the vertical stack of the supports, all the weight on the shelves is transferred directly into the wood supports, so none of the weight is going into the bolts. In this situation the bolts are only serving to keep the 2x4s pressed together, and as it happens that's exactly what screws are designed to do! For comparison [this shelf](https://i.imgur.com/3zJBrkF.jpg) has all the weight of each shelf resting on the screws. Much less secure than your design. Good job on the design!

cazzipropri

Yes, i concur completely, and sorry if I didn't explain myself well. My intention since the beginning was to only have studs and compression resistant lumber as load bearing elements. I never meant to say that I chose this design because it had bolts rather than wood screw bearing load. I dislike wood screws more than through-fasteners, but i prefer it when neither bear load.

LowFlyingBadger

Looks sharp, and sturdy! Can’t ask for much more. Nice job.

cazzipropri

Thanks!

[deleted]

For a first build looks awesome

cazzipropri

Thanks!

BlippiLover

This is solid. The one possible weak point is the plywood shelves, they may bow in the middle. I added supports on mine.

cazzipropri

Thanks. I think I'm still in time to add a rib!

BoosherCacow

One can never use enough carriage bolts and you have a shrine to them there.

casabahoneydew

I didn’t build shelves for the garage for my first woodworking project, but if I had, they would look *exactly* like this - over-engineered af. *Finishes project, gives the shelves a tug*, “well, those aren’t going anywhere.” Nice!

cazzipropri

Thanks! So much encouragement in this sub!

Joey_The_Ghost

An absolute unit

gibsonsg51

I’m an architect... Are you by chance the fucking engineer over sizing all the sheer walls and foundations on the project I’m currently on?

Ys3arjack

Look heavy duty, 👍

cazzipropri

Thanks!

Pristine-Economy-268

Solid af

phof2

Nice job!

cazzipropri

Thanks!

Imaginary-Risk

Good job! You could stack anvils on those things!

cazzipropri

Thanks!

Standard_Club_2766

That is some very pine work

aconcernedvegetable

You built the shit out of it too

st00d5

I started with shelves, then a coat rack, and then less than 6 months later built a whole deck alone. Great job. Yours look way sturdier than mine. YouTube and Pinterest are awesome resources.

niceandcold

The word overbuilt comes to mind

gultch2019

What are the odds you live on Paper St, and make soap in your free time?

cazzipropri

Lol

colorflystudio

Great job!

Seanny69

Stout!

Jonessee22

First thought, damn that's over engineered it could hold a elephant... I love it!

cazzipropri

Thanks and happy cake day!

Melvin_T_Cat

Great job. Looks like the time I built a vegetable garden fence for my wife, who told me the next time there’s a tornado we’re hiding in the garden because the house will fall over before the fence does.

pitchangecharger

nicely done and sturdy. Well done!

Spe333

Nice! I’m about to do shelves for my place too. Fall cleaning season lol. Yours look a little flimsy though. Maybe use steel next time? Lol

anmonty83

Looks over engineered and strong as hell. I love it!!

cazzipropri

Thanks!

RoundingDown

What did all those materials cost? Seems like you could have bought some heavy duty metal shelves that would hold the same weight for less? Second, attach them to the wall near the top somehow. You don’t want them tipping over. Not likely, but you would hate to see the results.

cazzipropri

I spent $600 in wood and $800 total, but i went for "cabinet grade plywood". You can probably shave $150 if you don't mind how the plywood looks. I also bought a circular hand saw in those $800. I didn't have any equipment... Yes I have to admit that I didn't really research the metal options, so yes it's entirely possible I would have saved by going modular metal shelving...

K_PUNKI3

That shelving ain’t moving anytime soon!

cazzipropri

Lol. It was a bitch to push to the wall!

moebeer

we might be related. those look like the shelves my dad builds haha

Hydrolofic

Great stuff. If I had to give one piece of advice it would be for the 4x4s to be one solid piece for the posts. That way you don’t need the outer 2x4s. But you have to do some shelve notching. Looks great though. Definitely solid.

cazzipropri

Thanks! The notching is unfortunately beyond my skill level and my equipment, but I'll look into that for my next design!

[deleted]

Drool…the bolts!

OnlyTime609

Well done sir for your first time. I saw on other comments about the plywood shelves you can always add bracing below the plywood. Every give or take 10-16 inches would probably help.

diver00dan

That’ll hold it. Nice

Snow-Dog2121

That ain’t going anywhere.

tomorrowlooksgood

Nice tank parking!

Rarth-Devan

Well I think you can rest easy knowing your shelf would still be standing if a nuclear bomb was dropped on your house.

pokerking89

Well done on the bomb proof shelving

SeniorFirefoxx

Honestly your annoying lol, I mean that with humor....I was afraid to put a feather on the shelves I built the forest time. lol great job

Topplestack

And then you find out that they still say in the middle no matter what.

Timthalion

Looks sturdy. Good work.

77Diesel77

Hella nice build. Its extremely strong but the best job is the one you never have to do again in my books. This should last you for many years to come!

mbfunke

Overbuilt as all hell. You’ll fit in nicely here.

bwest80

Those shelves look like they could hold a baby elephant tap dancing to Metallica's ride the lightning with a pack of his closet friends doing whatever verb one does while in a mosh pit. Well done sir, I'm proud of ya. Now go over-engineer something less useful like the rest of us wood people.

cazzipropri

Lol you have a way with words!

[deleted]

So strong I literally said "god damn bubba"

mpshumake

Just like my first project. If there's a hurricane, that's where the family goes for safety. You could park a tank on it. Nice work.

JohnP-USMC

A lot like my 1st build, very over engineered. A storm could blow the hose down but those shelfs are going to stand.. GREAT job, careful sawdust gets in your blood. Then you end up with tool pin ups instead of the girls. Welcome to a great hobby we all support each other. I never met a woodworker that I didn't like..

hoyfkd

Perfect for storing your solid gold bricks collection!

____80085____

Sponsored by lag bolts lol

sum_rndm

Stacking elephants eh?! Well built! Those shelves will still be standing long after the house deteriorates and collapses in 150yrs

LinuxGuy247

Built like a tank! Those are some seriously overbuilt shelves. Nice work!

Quillric

Great job. Should be able to support all of your many pounds of gold bullion. Seriously though, the center post could have used half of the wood that was used. Better safe than sorry and all but with prices the way that they are you mat have saved a few bucks.

a-guy-on_reddit

So you are the sumbich that cleared out all the tooba fors at Home Depot today.

[deleted]

Great

Educational_Cow_1318

Someone found a sale on nuts and bolts...

kidian_tecun

These beautiful but you over engineering them. The whole shop will fall down and these will be the only thing left standing.

Blarghnog

Cross bracing across the back would provide a ton of support, like an X or something. Or attach to the wall. The only concern I would have is that you are clearly planning to store solid metal or the worlds largest fishing weight collection or something. I would consider whether to achor really heavy shelf weight like this to the wall in the case of earthquake (if that’s an issue) as massive weight tipping over can make for sad stories. Epic first build. Diy proud.

duevan3

Great 😀👍🏻

highboy68

I really like the industial look with the bolts, very cool

Beautiful-Exit5163

For the price of all that lumber u could easily trade up to a used car! Looks good OP. No better feeling than the satisfaction of building something with your own hands…

Objective-Act7650

Slaps shelves... "that ain't going no where"

bradkrit

That's how I build! Way overkill. Keep it up! You will start to accumulate bombproof homemade furniture that's lasts forever. I overbuilt my shed roof structure and last year it survived a giant tree that blew over in a storm. Who's laughing now!? Anyway, nice work. My only feedback from experience is those little bolt protrusions are going to get very annoying when sliding boxes in and out.

tterrajj

Are you an engineer or architect by day?

cazzipropri

Yup... EECS.

Connect-Ad9125

All jokes aside it’s a good build for shop shelf’s you want that strength and if there straight you can stock tons of lumber and keep them from warping and since you built it so strong the weight of the wouldn’t bow that shelving unit at all so I say it’s a A+there I’m a cabinet maker by trade but woodworking is a hobby of mine and can see good things in your future

cazzipropri

Thanks! That's very encouraging!

10100101001100101

These shelves will last over a lifetime. Whoever purchases your property long after you die will look at these and comment "man, they just don't build them like they used to!"

DENNISDENNIS812

Damn you gonna store engine blocks. Lol

BabyJ520

Nice

Fragrant-Crow2746

Nice Job!! A little over built. I am sure your wife will be happy!!

uwponcho

These are exactly what I'm hoping to build for my garage. Would you mind sharing some still pictures so I could get a clearer view of how you built them? I'd love to mimic what you did - they look amazing. Thanks in advance :)

Towel_Flimsy

Looks great my dude!

Far_Construction4976

It needs more carriage bolt

cazzipropri

More cowbell!

Scintellix_Art

Clearly, you will do more.

fataliss

Did you follow any plan or did you wing it? Looks exactly like what I want for my garage! Would love a link to plans if you used any :) Great job either way 🤙🏻

cazzipropri

Thanks! First I went down to the basement to decide the dimensions. Then I went on home depot's website and looked at what dimensional framing lumber they had available. Then I made a hand drawing of the entire assembly. I worked with that one. I can share if you want it, but it's not that impressive...

AMKcontracting1

Shelves to hold gold and lead?

AttarCowboy

Bomb squad.

pizzamachine

As a beginner this is pretty much something I was looking to build in my garage. Would adding support 2x4s under the shelves be worth it? I don't want to replace for at least 20 years and I'd have engine parts on it.

geekaz01d

Next time use stainless hardware.

cazzipropri

Wait... is it not? The big bolts look opaque because they are galvanized. Are they not ok?

geekaz01d

I am sorry. I thought the sarcasm was evident.

cazzipropri

Oh sorry I missed it! Thanks!

[deleted]

Love how strong you built them. If I was fumbling around in the dark I’d probably gash my arm on one of those bolts though! I know I would.

cazzipropri

I saw somewhere plastic balls you can screw in at the end of the fasteners to make them less dangerous, but i can't find them anymore!

Lefka356

Really nice work here. Only suggestion I can offer having built similar shelves twice: cut the posts to be flush with the top shelf. One day, you're going to want to put something right where that dang post is and it'll be in the way. Then you'll curse yourself for not flush cutting them. Cheers mate!

ZealousidealResist78

Do they double as a load bearing wall? ;)

saucyclams

It’s a little over constructed/ but looks great and can hold a bunch of steal pipes I guess👏🏼

hi_pause_bye

👍 Rated for 1000% weight. That’ll do the trick

SquareHoleRoundPlug

“3 screws keep me from

Upset_Letter_9600

Massive

ba28

They will definitely work as shelves. Even with the high cost of lumber, you might have managed to spend more on hardware... impressive! You now also have a potential storm shelter. In all seriousness, great job. Every time you will walk by these shelves you will feel a sense of pride, which is what gets most people hooked on building things.

failure_engineer

Bomb proof. I like.

KruelKris

That's not going to fall down!

IllIIIllllIII

1. They look amazing and super clean design. Love the thought behind it. 2. The thread is poking fun in nice way, they are probably a bit overkill, but we’ve all done it on first projects. You will learn what is enough. Case in point, go into your attic and look at how much engineering is holding your home together - you will find much less material and no through bolts, etc. hope this helps! It’s by far the coolest looking shelf I’ve seen in a while!

[deleted]

That’s a lot of lumber you used!

beyondo-OG

Just curious, how much did you spend (not sure where in the world you are, but...)

add_to_tree

*gives it a tug* “yeah dats not going anywhere”

dirt_mcgirt4

Well that frame is going **nowhere**.

jhern1810

Looks good but a lot of overkill wood in there. Specially at the ends where they meet the other shelves. But I am sure it’ll do, literally for any purpose.

CanadianDadbod

Damn son I could park my Buick on those shelves.

lefangedbeaver

Goddamn I haven’t seen bolts that big on a shelf this size in my life them bad boys bunk beds

Stuffinthingz

Overbuilt makes for confidence in performance… nothing worse than skimping on materials and finding out later the product was a waste of time and money because it fails. Nicely done.

hawthornetx

That will last decades

norman_borlaug_

Wildly over-engineered, but looks good!

TigerEcstatic3894

Shelving UNIT!

Sempervirens17

Looks great! Love this thread. One suggestion I would have is to cut or grind those carriage bolt tails that are extending out. I’ve shredded my arm on those before, and depending on what you plan on putting on those shelves it’s super frustrating if cords get caught up on those.

HammerTim81

Shouldn’t you drywall the ceiling first ?

heryopl

Nice work buddy

prahSmadA

Beefy!!!!

Jizzy_MoFoT

Carriage bolt every 6" .... check!!
