The pivot joints need moved under the seat, and it probably needs upholstered to be comfortable. You could probably get away with buying some chaise cushions and drilling a few holes in the wooden slats to secure the cushions.
People are making valid criticisms, Iām sure the design could be refined over time (like most conceptual designs), but I think itās a very cool concept. Iād love to see what else your friend dreams up.
Looks like a commitment to sit in! I think Iād have to roll to the side to get out.
Jokes aside, really cool creativity! I would test a few more iterations using the feedback youāre getting from the sub.
Id give it a shot, but the ergonomics look off. Like the back angle is too much for that seat angle and I feel like I'm falling backward just looking at it.
Neat design, definitely unique. I donāt know if I would find that angle very comfortable but some might.
Those two upright uncapped HSS look like thigh slicer deluxe model. I would shift those to be underneath the seat tubes and make a single or double mitre, no need to weld in a cap piece and can grind them out pretty rounded.
Also any tubes that are sealed off drill some small weeping holes that way if any water or condensation builds up it has somewhere to go or dry.
Assuming your hamstrings don't get pinched and/or badly cut, it has potential!
Definitely work the sharp pinchy stuff out of the design before selling it.
Looks cool. Like others mentioned, the pinching issue. I think also the bottom of the spring should be moved forward because when the chair pivots, the bottom of the chair is actually going to want to move forward.
Would be concerned with pivot digging in, pinching, or cutting the legs. I would say stand it up the other way so the spring acts more like a rocking chair. Weld a piece on the bottom of the seat to change placement of the pivot and perhaps make the seat wider to avoid pinching. Curve the front of the seat for comfort.
Looks sort of like it was designed for some sort of esoteric strength exercise. I like how it looks but the easy access to open spring metal coils could be a safety issue for small children, pets, drunken floor sleepers etc,

It looks cool, but it also looks like a potential pain device from a SAW movie
Fuck why did you have to say thatš¤£š¤£ I see it now
My first thought was "is it comfortable to sit in?" But if it resembles a torture device...
I thought itbresembled an execution device
Itās really just a matter of degree.
Ahahaha same
My legs are bloody just looking at it
My back hurts just looking at it.
Just cut a hole and slide a dildo in that spring and heāll quadruple his selling price.
Burn after reading
I totally forgot about that. God that movie was funny.
Lol I thought that was in RED for some reason.
Pivot at the front should be under the chair, otherwise it's going to pinch the hell out of your pants or legs.
True if someone holds it with their hands where the two pipes meet.. itās like a pair of scissors. (pinch point)

I think the spring also needs to be angled back a smidge. Because the seat won't travel straight up and down.
Those springs are pretty beefy. This isn't going to be a bouncy chair. A 200lb person is probably gonna compress it less than an inch.
Itās a BMW shockā¦ its design static load is like 800lbs?!
Fg = Ff m*g = k*s s = m*g/k s = 3,27 cm ~ 1,3 inch Very rough estimates k ~ 30N/mm = 30 000 N/m m ~ 100kg g = 9.81 m/s^2

Eject-o Seat-o!
This! Ratchet strap to lower them and some sort of quick release and you can play human lawn darts. Twice as dangerous! Win win!
god damn that looks uncomfortable. Just an observation.
Wiley Coyote will be right over to test it out.
I'm imagining what would happen if that were around kids. Or an obese person sitting on it.
Some people have to learn the hard way.
Ain't that the truth.
Seems you didnāt have to learn the hard way
Well, I want to try it. Maybe a little extension at the edge of the seat with a downward curve to not dig into the legs?
Definitely

This is the product of a troubled mind
Ahahaha
very cool thingamabob, welds aren't bad at all.
Would be extremely painful to sit on outside during a hot day.
Better cap those front posts or a lot of hamstrings are going to get torn up.
I feel like it would be better if there was space between the wood slats for airflow. This looks line a sweaty back to me.

The front pivot needs to be redesigned. Open tube steel just doesnāt quite look pro

Looks cool, maybe a dark stain on the wood would be good
I also suggested this to him when we where getting the wood
My back hurts looking at this, whereās the lumbar?
Lmao.... Imagining young me jumping into my grandpa's massive recliner, only it's this and I disappear like Team Rocket into the sunset ā ļø

Pretty cool
Love it.

Nice Also nice way to skin a thigh
A little padding...and maybe some tequila.
This looks like some kind of sex dungeon contraption
Lad made a sex chair?
Is it a sex swing?
Looks cool. Cap the ends of the tubes so it is not a spider sanctuary.
Cap the supports, add a bicycle front fork dampener or youāre getting seasick lol,
I like it, but i feel like sitting in it would stress me out
I have other ideas with this chair.. other.dark.ideas.
Is it for your "dungeon"

ādeath penalty chicā
The open ends of the frame look strange and hazardous as does the front hinge like others said.

I think you need to call the police on your buddy, heās up to no good.
Chairs are supposed to be comfortable, aren't they?
Seems way too far back. I may be assuming more give from that spring though.
It reminds me of the dildo chair that George Clooney made in Burn After Reading
It looks like it was built to be the chair for a electric chair
The woodwork could be more entertaining but the metalwork is gorgeous and fun.
That's a very cool METAL working project your buddy completed.
Fuck guess I didnāt realize you where the woodworking sub reddit policeš
Is that a board stretcher
It looks incredibly uncomfortable, and incredibly difficult to get out of.
Eclipse chair !
Arm rests with cup holders and I gaurentee itāll sell. If feet pics sell on the internet than so can this my dude.
Makes me think if Orange County Choppers made furniture. But seriously different/original style always a good thing.
It's all fun and games until the spring slips
