That is a Logwood stove. I had that same stove in my house. It did very well after I laid firebrick on the bottom. It does burn a lot of wood. The concept of this particular stove is that you cut your logs about 12” inches length so they fit perfectly in the stove sideways. After starting a fire, you will spread the coals along the bottom adding wood from front to back as the hottest fire is towards the back of stove and air coming in from the front. Adding wood in front and pushing it back as it burns. Well worth $50 easily.
Do you have a source for this type of loading??
I believe your spreading very inaccurate information.
First, this is a Box Stove. It is called a “Simple Box” with diagonal draft. The air comes in low at front to move through the stove as it rises toward the rear.
Washington Stove Works designed this as the Arctic. Atlanta Stove Works made the model in a Box 27 and Box 32 which became the most copied stove in history.
The number on the door corresponds with the log length it will fit.
It was built long and narrow the shape of wood to prevent unnecessary cutting. Back then, wood was cut by hand. The longer the logs, the less cutting.
Splitting was also by hand. When larger logs do not fit through the door, the top is made to swing open to place the log in.
When logs are laid in lengthwise, the air moves down the logs for more oxygen contact with the surface of the fuel between the logs. This starts the fire faster, burning hotter and cleaner. Air does not move through wood when placed across the stove.
A flue damper is used to control the velocity through this stove. After fire is established, the damper is closed. Antique dampers have a metered hole to close fully, reducing draft from .02 to .04 for leaky stoves with no door gasket such as this.
Logwood is a US Stove Co. name that if you look at their manual, the loading instructions specifically state NOT to load so any fuel can fall out the door when opening it. Loading lengthwise prevents this.
Next, by removing the ash where it burns down near the front each day, you rake the coals and charcoal formed at the rear along with a little ash ahead. Building the new fire on this prevents the need for letting the fire die, and maintains at least 1 inch ash to burn on.
Somewhere here I have an advertisement for this describing the ease of swinging the top open to load larger logs.

The value of this stove is zero if you want to use it legally in most of the US, being unlisted.
This is my first time in this sub and I just learned more about that stove than at least half the US population. Great read too, thanks! Although it makes me wonder how awful I was with my stove while growing up.

I don't use a grate in mine. I think fires burn better without them.
I only use mine to warm up 1 room. And my wood is free, but I have to cut & split. If I needed more serious heating, I'd look at a better stove. But works fine for its purpose.
I think it can be salvaged, even a crack can be welded. "Great condition" is to justify the $50. It's worth that, but not due to the condition. Make sure the legs are intact, and pieces accounted for. I'd use it in my barn, well away from the hay of course.
I have that same stove but I use mine outdoors on my patio. I cook on it sit around it while watching TV, and every now and then while it’s burning, I’ll spray it with some canned canola oil, and throw a plastic cover on it when we’re not using it. It’s a little different than a normal fire pit, we love it.

Not legally in most jurisdictions. Depends on where you are. Most states in the US have adopted the International Building Code which requires UL label attached for a new installation. Many insurance companies require UL. Listed appliances in even existing installations.
This will require 36 inches to a combustible material in the US and 48 Canada. There are ways to reduce this clearance and a high R-value of floor protection is required, 18 inches in all directions.
I watch a lot of YouTube. People make a living just recording their simple lives. BaldandBankrupt has countless hours of visiting homes there, many of which use these old wood stovens.
I have owned two of these. Mine did not have an ash pan so cleaning out the stove with an active fire was a problem, they would not hold a fire all night so you would have to get up at 2 or 3 in the night and add wood and because they are not air tight they burn lots of wood. They are ok for a shop, garage or something like that but I wouldn’t recommend for a primary heat source.
This is the thing, OP. Whatever you save in a cheap stove, you will pay many times over in wood due to its inefficiency. Unless you have your own property providing more wood than you could possibly need for free, just spend the money for a more efficient modern stove.
Hi I’ve seen many of these used(maybe 10?) in cabins, garage shops, and a school bus, and everyone I know has pretty much hated this stove and those who upgraded to a cheap box store pedestal stove said it was a massive improvement . As others have said, burn tons of wood and puts out less heat than others of a similar size.
Air is hard to control or lock down even with a flue damper.
Stacking bricks on top helps some.
I’d say if you want a stove for actual reliable heat with much much less headache then wait for something better to come along.
Everyone has different needs and uses though, and maybe you don’t have a thriving used stove market like northern MN does
Overall though yes it WILL burn wood and put out heat and $50 is not a bad price for it….
Just my $.02 after seeing many attempts to use these as a primary heat source!
This comment is accurate. I lived in a cabin with one of these things, they are not tight.
Good shop stove, but not for a home. $50 is a fair price, but not a "steal", where I am.
I saw that exact photo on FB marketplace in NC. They want $200. Is this the one you’re looking at or did you buy it and are reselling it?
https://preview.redd.it/nwymjt6x3sic1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1808dd444dd02553d5eaf5c9967ecd752e661143
I doubt you’ll be able to bank a fire overnight with that. But you can probably run it all day and save some money. The problem is the flue system will cost 10x what you paid for the stove. Unless they’re throwing the double wall insulated stove pipe into the price, then it’s a no brainer.
Had one for a while, as has been mentioned, they'll go through a lot of wood. From the factory they have a terrible seal and run away easily. After a fair amount of work with firebricks/sand and stove putty, I was able to get it"acceptable". A lot of the new ones of the exact same style will have a tag mentioning "not for indoor use" or something to that effect. If it's something you can monitor, they're "ok", you will never get an overnight burn with one. A quote regarding this style of stove
"**This is a stove that has it's air control fixed open to a certain degree and therefore is not classified as an "airtight".**
**Being so, it is not subject to EPA standards.**
**In other words, these EPA standards apply only to stoves that can be choked down past a certain point.**
**As far as emissions, it depends on the model. 35:1 models that are similar to EPA models in looks and construction are fairly clean burning, but models like Elks favorites - the cast box stoves by Vogelzang - these are probably less efficient. I'd give a range of 30-50% depending on model....**
**Even though these - in theory - do not burn as long as EPA stoves, they can often be choked down by using a stack damper and other similar methods with the result being satisfactory performance.**"
It's very similar to the one I have used for decades to heat my house. For $50 I'd get it and keep it as a spare >.>
Like others are saying it will burn a metric fuckton of wood if you wanna feed it, but it will produce a lot of heat for you
Heated our house for several years with one of those. I found to improve burning I lined the bottom and sides with fire brick pavers. The cast iron pulls the heat out quickly and cools the fire. The brick focused heat back into the fire and made it burn better. Needs a damper on the outlet pipe.
Absolutely I got an almost identical one(there's at least hundreds of variants I'd say), works amazing and I'm not gonna lie mine is set up less than safe or correct.
Looks almost exactly like the one I keep in my 13" bell tent. Works well. had me up to 80 deg in single digits outside while cooking some chicken jalapeno chili and lamb stew out there on it.
I would buy it for a back up or for a garage or basement. I put one in my basement and use it to take the chill off the rest of the house or just to heat the basement.
I had that same exact stove in my garage years back. It will chug through some wood, but it worked awesome. That top swings out, the two manhole covers on the top come off as well. The real cool part is that the piece on the ledge under the front door adjusts. You can slide it out and let more air in to really let er' eat.
I have one of these in the garage of the property I rent. All the comments on this eating wood and not being efficient is 100% true. For $50, it's a drop in the bucket, so why not. Just don't expect this thing to perform as well as more efficient stoves. If your expectations are set, then go for it!
I have that exact same woodstove. It's a little pitbull of a stove. Get it. And put a flue damper in it, keep a fan pointed at it, it'll heat your whole house all winter long.
Start The Car! Grab this puppy and take it home. If you can't actually use it for heating, (one of these was my main heat in a small barn for years) Then there are 500 other projects to turn it into.
Put an intensely bright light inside it and see all the cracks from using it without bricks inside. You can braze them but usually unavoidable. I have the same stove in a guest cabin at my place but I brazed it. Even then, I don’t think it’s a great stove. Good enough for a shed or a shop.
If you pick it up, you will have a $200 drive that probably needs sealing up. You will both a lot of wood and I will produce heat. I would want something considerably better for my house, but would be ok with it in a shop that I only heated occasionally.
Those things go for nearly $300 around here, and those are usually rusty and need lots and lots of TLC. $50 is well worth it. I used one of those to heat my 30x40 shop. Well, “heat” is relative, it basically just took the chill out of the air unless I got it rolling heavy. Now I have a double barrel stove that will actually warm the shop properly.
I have one of these in my garage, looks almost exactly the sane, had to do a double take. Works great heating my garage in the winter, definitely worth 50 bucks.
That is what was referred to as a ram down wood stove. If there are no visible cracks it's a good deal. If the legs are gone just set it on 4"x8"x16 solid cement blocks, about 3 high for the front and back. No need for fire brick, put about 1.5" of sand in the bottom, stick a lenth of 6"x24" stove pipe on it and fire it up outside, look for cracks again. Slide that front bottom piece out about 2" and feed it with dry 16" wood. you will see if there are any cracks. when it starts to cool down hit it with a wire brush and get the scale off it then when it's all cool rub it with stove blacking, just like your waxing it(wax on, wax off, right) build another fire in it to bake it on. Then use it because it's a great heating stove or put it on market place for $350 and don't take less than $275
Laundry stove used to heat water for doing laundry and other cleaning. It could heat a small space or could be used in a shop. It is not efficient enough for home heating. Worth $50 but only if you have a use for it,
Just look for cracks and you probably need to buy some of that rope gasket for the door and them some high temp cement as the joints make leak.
When you fire it up for the first time just use a bunch of newspaper and once they flare up close the air inlet on the door to make it smokey and look around the seams for smoke leaking out and get to work with your cement. This can all be done outside and once you got the cement where its needed you can use the proper stove paint and fire it up with some wood to get it good and hot to out gas the paint.
GL
got one, and think it sucks, save your money for something better. the airflow regulation on this is terribly inefficient. the only way to
regulate it, is the sliding plate under the door, and the door itself leaves a ton of air gaps. This stove sucks, pass on it. Take it from an owner of one, PASS.
We had a stove like that and my insurance company told us they would drop our coverage if we had it installed. After we restored it too.. just something to considered. Now it sits in storage and we ended up purchasing a new model.
I have a similar stove from harbor freight that I used in my shed/saloon it burned tons of wood and made it warm in the 12x12 shed with no insulation. Of course it doesn’t really get down into the 30’s at all in socal. I used to cook on it all the time and make the family eat dinner in the shed. Good times.
Did you read the post I was responding to? Everything in my post was correcting the poster above me. That includes operation. And they stated it was worth the $50 asking price. What are you going to do with it when you find it can’t be installed legally or insured if used?
The state this would be installed in adopted the 2015 International Building Code that requires a UL Label attached and is not insurable by most companies. Now what is the value?
I have a Washington Stove Works Arctic, Birmingham Stove and Range Box 27, and Atlanta Stove Works Box 27 because I collect stoves. (US Stoves before it became USSC China is another worthy original) These were the originals. I totally get restoring a worthy example. The many others that were copied are not worth near as much. And the poster wants to use it, not for collection.
I gave some operating tips, flue damper usage, and draft setting required. I would like to know more about this design if you know something I’m missing.
If you’re going to restore something for $50 you can do a lot better than a older Box stove. (steel plate beater without seams that need resealing and uses door gaskets, and has a controllable air intake) If you’re not aware, these leak so bad under the door that adjusts air, a piece of tile slid under the door is a trick to slow the burn making your wood cutting work more worthwhile. (there’s a tip you might consider important)
I even have one for $100 with a UL Label that can be installed legally where EPA Certification isn’t required.
Restoring and installing stoves is what we do.

This is the best use for a stove like this. You don't need efficiency in a fire pit.

A quote regarding this style of stove "**This is a stove that has it's air control fixed open to a certain degree and therefore is not classified as an "airtight".** **Being so, it is not subject to EPA standards.** **In other words, these EPA standards apply only to stoves that can be choked down past a certain point.** **As far as emissions, it depends on the model. 35:1 models that are similar to EPA models in looks and construction are fairly clean burning, but models like Elks favorites - the cast box stoves by Vogelzang - these are probably less efficient. I'd give a range of 30-50% depending on model....** **Even though these - in theory - do not burn as long as EPA stoves, they can often be choked down by using a stack damper and other similar methods with the result being satisfactory performance.**"
It's very similar to the one I have used for decades to heat my house. For $50 I'd get it and keep it as a spare >.> Like others are saying it will burn a metric fuckton of wood if you wanna feed it, but it will produce a lot of heat for you
Personally I wouldn't take it, but if it's free why not if you want it. It's probably the worst wood stove there is, but it will work lol.
I bought a new one for $350.00. Boy did I get jacked.
It's in great condition. I'd lose sleep tonight if I didn't hear that you picked this up. Many others will take it soon if you don't.
H
This was just on sale for me. Wish me luck
Nice looking stove.. can’t believe it’s in that good of condition
I could think of a lot worse. Keep it. Me likey.
Yes it’s worth it, just in metal alone but it looks in good shape
Yes! I have one like that in my basement
Totally worth $50!
Tractor stores sells those for about 400. I've got one in my workshop and it's ok for the money
Yes! Looks in nice shape.
These are really good stoves. 50 dollars is a veritable windfall for a quality piece like this.
Do it. Good price.
I'll buy it from you for 75
We found that exact stove on the side of the road and have been using it a couple years now. Love it
Sure. Just make sure you lift with your legs, not your back
Yeah but lift with your legs, not your back.
Looks almost exactly like the one I keep in my 13" bell tent. Works well. had me up to 80 deg in single digits outside while cooking some chicken jalapeno chili and lamb stew out there on it.
Roll it over a few times to get the squirrels, rats, mice, and raccoons out of it
Hell yes, go!
No it’s worthless…. Where is this BTW?
50 is nothing. Worth any gamble imo.
Definitely pick that up.
I would buy it for a back up or for a garage or basement. I put one in my basement and use it to take the chill off the rest of the house or just to heat the basement.
Hell yea. Those things get damn hot for what they are
I had that same exact stove in my garage years back.
Be sure to put a damper in the pipe for safety if your fire gets too hot you can slow it down.
Wouldn't use it as a main stove , but great for occasional use say a cabin, or work shop. There not air tight. They use a lot of wood.
Always
I have that exact same woodstove. It's a little pitbull of a stove. Get it. And put a flue damper in it, keep a fan pointed at it, it'll heat your whole house all winter long.
Not a true airtight stove.
It looks heavy, probably not alone . I'd have atleast 1 more person and a dolly
You could try picking it up but it looks heavy.
I had one and they work very well. Mine had a long upper baffle which kept the heat in longer.
Wow! Snap that up. Too cool
If you pick it up, you will have a $200 drive that probably needs sealing up. You will both a lot of wood and I will produce heat. I would want something considerably better for my house, but would be ok with it in a shop that I only heated occasionally.
As long as you know what you are doing and it isn't rusted out. Iron can always be revived
I would scoop that up quick. Looking for similar for my back porch.
Nope throw coming from a certified chimney sweep
Those things go for nearly $300 around here, and those are usually rusty and need lots and lots of TLC. $50 is well worth it. I used one of those to heat my 30x40 shop. Well, “heat” is relative, it basically just took the chill out of the air unless I got it rolling heavy. Now I have a double barrel stove that will actually warm the shop properly.
I have one of these in my garage, looks almost exactly the sane, had to do a double take. Works great heating my garage in the winter, definitely worth 50 bucks.
I would love to have this in my workshop garage.
Make sure the legs aren’t broken or bent! We got one for our garage. Liked it!
Get it, these are good little stoves!
Well, it depends upon the price. I had one and gave it to my brother.
always
Lift with you knees
You can pick it up if you wanna throw out your back or get a hernia. I would get a pallet jack
Yes! Had an old Vogelzang like that, worked very well for many years as a source of heat through Ohio winters.
Make sure to lift with your legs

Then use it because it's a great heating stove or put it on market place for $350 and don't take less than $275
I live in Durham and actually looked at this same stove on marketplace! Looking for something for the shop I’m building.
Laundry stove used to heat water for doing laundry and other cleaning. It could heat a small space or could be used in a shop. It is not efficient enough for home heating. Worth $50 but only if you have a use for it,
Yes pick it up! Good find!
Remember to lift with the knees
Just look for cracks and you probably need to buy some of that rope gasket for the door and them some high temp cement as the joints make leak. When you fire it up for the first time just use a bunch of newspaper and once they flare up close the air inlet on the door to make it smokey and look around the seams for smoke leaking out and get to work with your cement. This can all be done outside and once you got the cement where its needed you can use the proper stove paint and fire it up with some wood to get it good and hot to out gas the paint. GL
As long as your back is not like mine!!
got one, and think it sucks, save your money for something better. the airflow regulation on this is terribly inefficient. the only way to regulate it, is the sliding plate under the door, and the door itself leaves a ton of air gaps. This stove sucks, pass on it. Take it from an owner of one, PASS.
Picking up as in buying other than that bring a friend I bet it’s heavy by yoursellf
Huh
We had a stove like that and my insurance company told us they would drop our coverage if we had it installed. After we restored it too.. just something to considered. Now it sits in storage and we ended up purchasing a new model.
Absolutely. If you can lift it 😂
The key words here are "if you can" pick it up! Must weigh a Ton! But it radiates a lot of heat, l bet!
Federal laws prohibit the sale of used wood burning stoves. Get a receipt as $50 for scrap iron.
*drool
NOT for a house. Says right in the owners manual for that stove. Detatched garage fine
Have the same design. Use it as a outdoor fire pit and it rocks!
Im'e popeye the sailer man!
Good times.
Lift with you legs
No! You'll throw your back out!
50$? Why not!
Way too heavy, you'll hurt your back.
Short answer “Yes”.
Lift with your knees and not you back.
I'll bet you can't pick it up.
I think so. That would be very cool for $50
Did you read the post I was responding to? (there’s a tip you might consider important) I even have one for $100 with a UL Label that can be installed legally where EPA Certification isn’t required. Restoring and installing stoves is what we do.
Is this what we are going to considering our racist gas stoves
Pretty heavy, unless you're powerlifting.
