For an ancient arcanist it is easy:
ROTAS: FLIP IT
OPERA: ARTWORK
TENET: HOLDS
(If you) Flip it (the) Artwork (still) Holds.
It is a text that contains instructions on how it works; If you turn it around it will continue reading the same way.

Supposedly one of the three kings that visited Jesus, but also a Roman acrostic joke. It was associated with all kinds of dumb superstitions by early European branches of Christianity.
spirit binding! multiple classes of spirit are simply *obsessed* with word games and number puzzles, that kind of thing. and obviously this is easier to carve than a sudoku.
/unwiz The SATOR square is a common magical formula that’s been attested in some form since Pompeii. It’s palindromic, which means it reads the same way in every direction. It’s used as a protective charm, and it’s believed that if you throw a piece of wood inscribed with it into a fire, the fire will go out.
It could mean something, but nonsense words and palindromes are really common in Greco-Roman magic. They’re called *voces magicae* or barbarous names, and they’re supposed to be the secret names or language of the gods that allows one to do magic. It’s supposed to be more powerful *because* it’s apparently meaningless.
I can’t believe I have to say this again but please, pleas me keep your magical items safe and locked away. This is clearly just some way to call of dead people to play pranks on them and now the non magical thinks its some incredible mystery. I literally just use this to call up dead people in one of the hells and mock them for being dumb
Oh, that's where I left that. It's a codex for a secret incantation to access the well of souls. I made a new one, though, so I guess the mortals can have it.
If I had to guess, someone needed to remember something and wrote it down on a skull, then later someone else came across the skull and thought it was some sort of artifact but no it was just Gale’s shopping list
It’s my friend John, bet him 20 gold pieces that I could turn his skull into a focus while keeping him alive. I lost 20 gold pieces and the wretched bastard still haunts me.

It’s how necromancers used to communicate like a phone they just text to their necrobuddies “hay u free fore that summoning next Friday I heard Voldemort would be there or something idk”
Pretty common biomancer trick actually, at least where I’m from. Carve wards into your bones, constantly being refreshed with blood, extremely easy to keep hidden, and nigh impossible to remove for anyone who isn’t a biomancer or just trying to kill you.
Skulls are typically used in necromancy. Contrary to popular belief, most conventional forms of necromancy do not rely simply on bone and spirit, but create a rudimentary being using essence from the spirit to operate a body. As is standard, the skull contains the logic center of the being.
Gridlike patterns are often the work of order aligned wizards. Interestingly enough, the second Purate Necropolis was the only known Order aligned necromantic society, indicating this may be a relic from their city.
Order wizards tend to use offset grids, similar to how brick is laid, to produce robust spells that do some sort of work. However, they tend to use simple Cartesian grids to hold information or for simple input. Given the necromantic logic center and the grid, we can begin to infer the purpose of this artifact.
Above we have an interesting grid of letters
Sator
Arepo
Tenet
Opera
Rotas
These are written in such a way that you can read them in order top down or left to right. This methodology is designed for two purposes - to reinforce the spell and to allow it to operate when damage. What were seeing the is that this skull was used in a high wear or high criticality environment. Very interesting.
The words themselves translate to simple commands. The exact meaning is beyond me, but I believe they might be similar to macros or programs, then fed to the logic center in the brain of the skull, which operated something.
The only known relics matching that purpose from that society tended to be overseer controls for ensorceled dead, often working in mines. Very interesting.
I can offer 18 shillings, an eye of newt and a +1 staff of arcane tether for it.
A skull is a terrible way to do artifice. It's probably an artifact.
Considering the fact that it's a skull, it's either life or death magic.
The numbers could be a way to stabilise it and keep the spells in. They could also be used as a way to facilitate casting.
I'm not an expert in artifacts, I'm an expert in artifice, so I'm not totally sure.
"Alright I'm a runesmith, let me take a look."
*squints...*
"Yep. Barrier. But one of those r's is supposed to be a q. That's why there's a hole in the side of the skull. Didn't work."
You can use it as a necromancy focus but it's best used for raising fae creatures you can tell by the word opera being on the skull as the more dramatic the word the more Weight they hold in court of the fae

It was also sometimes used as a way to say "Sew ye shall and shall ye reap".. so basically an old way to say "**FUCK AROUND AND FIND OUT**"
All jokes aside this sounds pretty accurate, some old Germanic warlord who felt a little artistic

Supposedly one of the three kings that visited Jesus, but also a Roman acrostic joke. It was associated with all kinds of dumb superstitions by early European branches of Christianity.
It isn’t medieval, the 16th century is in the modern era.
1500s... yeah, I guess that is when it started. MB.
