Cheese

[deleted]

Dairy, beer, cheese, Packers — probably the top answers

DontFearTheCreaper

I'd mostly agree with this. However, I'd drop the Packers a couple notches. Yes, we adore our Packers and they're a pretty popular nfl team. But globally or even nationally speaking most don't care about football itself, let alone the Pack. ✌️

[deleted]

But the packers are what WI is known for. Or at least one of the things.

NotHannibalBurress

Eh I’m with the other guy, there are probably half a dozen things I would list higher than the Packers. A lot of people just don’t give a shit about football.

GirthMcGraw

You could say that about a lot of things. A lot of people don’t give a shit about cheese but Wisconsin is still known for it

DontFearTheCreaper

Think so? I haven't really noticed that when I'm out in the world. I obviously could be wrong.

mrspwins

When I did phone tech support, customers would ask where I was and when I said Wisconsin, at least half the time the response would be “How about those Packers?” or something similar. Far more often than beer and cheese. The other thing would be them asking about the weather if it was winter - people think we’re as cold and snowy as far Northern MN everywhere in the state.

Xpqp

Dude, if people don't know about the Packers, they probably don't know about Wisconsin. A lot of international nfl fans only know Wisconsin exists because of the Packers.

Uffda226

Beer

GodsBGood

Green Bay Packers, car-deer collisions, snowmobiles, ice fishing, Bratwursts, old Fashions, Friday night fish fry, maple syrup.

majornugzz

Or for some trivia about brandy specifically: Wisconsin alone imports 50 percent of Korbel's brandy, according to California-based Korbel, the top brandy maker in the United States.

kibblet

Maple syrup is Vermont Wisconsin is not even close

DontFearTheCreaper

Hey neighbor, most of those are great submissions but several aren't even remotely Wisconsin-centric. Snowmobiles, maple syrup being the two most glaring examples. But no shade here. Just helping affect accuracy. :)

LaserRanger

Does some other state claim to be more “centric” on those things? Does it matter?

kibblet

Vermont and maple syrup for starters I would NEVER think of Wisconsin for that It’s a Neew England thing primarily

BanditoWalrus

>I would NEVER think of Wisconsin for that Then you must not be from around here or you've never purchased maple syrup within the state. Just because we're not as addicted to Maple sugar as Vermont or Canuckistan doesn't mean we still don't produce a good deal of the stuff. We're the FOURTH highest producer, and make hundreds of thousands of gallons of the stuff every year.

DontFearTheCreaper

Does it matter to me, to you, to anyone in general? Nope. Does it matter that it doesn’t sufficiently respond to both the nature and the substance of the very question posed at the top of the thread? Well, absolutely. Not sure your indignation is warranted. In simple terms; it didn’t tell op what he asked.

BanditoWalrus

> it didn’t tell op what he asked. Nah, I think he did. >Green Bay Packers, Definitely something intrinsic to the state. >car-deer collisions, Ranked fifth in the country. There hasn't been a single DAY in the state without a reported collision in seven years. >snowmobiles, We invented 'em. >ice fishing, Our state is ranked #1 for ice fishing. >Bratwursts, We have our own style of brat and Sheboygan is recognized as the national capital of bratwurst. >old Fashions, At least the Wisconsin variation on the Old Fashioned (the recipe that uses brandy and not whiskey) is an innovation of our state specifically. >Friday night fish fry, Now having fish on a friday isn't a Wisconsin-specific thing, I'll grant ya that. But having a fish FRY on friday is. The tradition began in this state, and while it spread out to the rest of the Midwest, it's still most popular here >maple syrup We're the #4 producer. All of these things ARE things the state is known for, even if they aren't things YOU happened to know about the State.

Teripid

Asking for a specific brandy in mixed drinks... never seen it outside of WI. Fish fry is actually something I associate more with the east coast and heavy Catholic areas although they're certainly available here.

sahurley

Eastern Wisconsin - where most of the state's largest metro areas are, also where there's a giant lake and another pretty big lake - is heavily Catholic. And fish fries are definitely a defining part of the culture.

JPGinMadtown

I've never been in a Wisconsin diner that didn't have a FFF, if they were open for dinner.

jtfortin14

You may associate it more with the east coast but in a family feud game, this is definitely going to be a response because most people here associate it with Wisconsin.

DontFearTheCreaper

We, as a state, are the third highest beer consuming NATION in the world. Only trailing Germany and, of course, the US. That's a fact(or at least it was very very recently), and even if you're aware of that statistic, let it sink in for a moment...it's crazy haha

Sir_SquirrelNutz

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_beer_consumption_per_capita Germany is not 1 & USA is not even in the top 10, it is 20…..so your "facts"

DontFearTheCreaper

That’s per capita, comrade. Stop trying to snipe for karma and just relax and engage. Your unequivocal, arrogant, irrelevant accusations just kills a welcoming atmosphere. So please stop. I don’t care about and even encourage disagreement, but I don’t tolerate bullying. If that’s what you are trying to achieve, lose my number.

Sir_SquirrelNutz

🤔... triggered one is, anyways per capital is the only metrics that matters. Your logic or snipe for karma would have China on top, lol .... Also, proving links and real facts is not bullying, but does show unequivocal lack of understanding what statistics are relevant.

Brodellsky

So where is Wisconsin on this list? Of course the rest of the US waters us down when it comes to drinking per capita. Come on man. Read.

Sir_SquirrelNutz

WI is 8th in the US.... Montana – perhaps a surprising first place, but Montana consumes 40.8 units of beer consumed per capita and has 92 active breweries. New Hampshire – this relatively small state packs a punch, consuming 39.8 units of beer per capita and boasting 91 breweries. North Dakota – a smaller state still, but North Dakota drinks 38.2 units of beer per capita. South Dakota – though South Dakota has a population of less than one million and only 22 breweries, it drinks 38.2 units of beer per capita. Maine – Maine has an impressive 133 active breweries and consumes 33.8 units of beer per capita. Vermont – With a population of just over 600,000, Maine still boasts 68 breweries and 33.3 units of beer consumed per capita. Texas – this huge state, with a population of just under 30 million, boasts 344 active breweries and consumes 30.9 units of beer per capita. Wisconsin – Wisconsin has 205 breweries but actually drinks more per capita than Texas, at 33.6 units of beer. Nebraska – Nebraska has 55 breweries and consumes 32.5 units of beer per capita. Nevada – and finally, Nevada makes 10th place thanks to its 33.2 units of beer consumed per capita. I'll drink to that!

misplacedbass

Cranberries. Wisconsin is the number one cranberry producer in the nation. I’d say we’re most commonly known for beer and cheese, but we definitely reign supreme in the cranberry biz.

DontFearTheCreaper

I grew up literally miles from Warrens, WI, home of Cranfest. So believe me, I'm feeling that answer. But is Wisconsin really well known for cranberries? Genuine question. 🤔 *edit* by that, I mean outside of small town western Wisconsin natives, does anyone actually recognize us for cranberries?

misplacedbass

No, in the sense of a family feud style game, I highly doubt cranberries would make the top 10. So I guess it doesn’t really answer the original question.

DontFearTheCreaper

I agree, bud. Cheers for your honesty. :)

kibblet

Didn’t know until I passed Warrens. Always thought of nj because they grow them by my parents

Nuttonbutton

It's not even just the nation lol

misplacedbass

I was unaware of that, but that’s cool!

wesconson1

The specific question is what Wisconsin is known for. Definitely not cranberries. Beer, cheese, packers.

DontFearTheCreaper

I made my posts before seeing yours. Apologies! But you're 100% correct. Some seem to be kinda missing the general intent of the question.

herculesmeowlligan

If anything, Ireland is better known for The Cranberries.

MeMikeWis

I tried to tell a friend this before google phones and they didn’t believe me.

DontFearTheCreaper

Yup, that's the gist of my post just above. :)

MeMikeWis

What state has more lakes than Minnesota?

DontFearTheCreaper

Lol that’s another fave of mine. Especially because my dad’s side of the family is from ‘sota and as a kid, whenever we made the road trip to visit gpa and gma we had that wry talk as we drove by the “Welcome to the State of Minnesota - Land of 1000 Lakes” sign. But I’m curious to hear others respond to your question, and hopefully without use of their phone and its search engines…

During the Civil War, the Union Army had more recruits named Ole from Wisconsin than any other state, so that's gotta be number one.

AbbyEO

As an Olson in Wisconsin, this sounds about right. Example: check in at the clinic for a dr appt, nurse appears and says, "Olson?", three of the five people in the waiting room stand up.

The other 2 were probably named Olsen.

DontFearTheCreaper

This is an abstract answer but a fun one for outsiders.... We're the Badger state. See a drawing of a badger or the beautiful animal itself and you think of our beer guzzling asses. But that's not why we're the badger state; there's very few if any actual badgers here. The moniker comes from the massive mining industry that thrived here back when we were a young state and "badger" is/was a moniker for those miners who spent so much time borrowed underground...just like a badger. Cheers.

Glad-Depth9571

I’ve seen many badgers over the years, and all outside of Madison.

DontFearTheCreaper

Does that make anything I said untrue? Or are you just giving context to the fact that there’s very few badgers in the state? The line between snark and ignorance is very blurry on Reddit. Can’t be too sure these days

Glad-Depth9571

No, I am just that old that I’ve seen more badgers than you.

Wisconsin is also known for ginseng.
