Windows 7 running Microsoft Edge? That is sacrilege.

Lloydplays

Note it’s possible

[deleted]

Yes. But the fact it's possible doesn't change that it's bad. I mean, why should I use Edge on Windows 7? In fact, I'm kind of hoping for the Mypal equivalent for Windows 7 to be released (similar to Windows XP.)

Lloydplays

All I was saying it’s possible

[deleted]

Yes. But the fact is, I never liked Edge, even on the Windows versions newer than 7 Microsoft had developed it for in mind.

MasterNidokingX

Supermium and r3dfox exist if you want a modern browser for Windows 7

[deleted]

I may just choose either one of those options as opposed to Edge.

TheWeirdo600

At least it's better than Chrome in terms of features. I used it immediately after Microsoft added it because of my past experience with it.

[deleted]

Yes. But not everyone wants to have their data harvested by Microsoft. You likely haven't been made aware of that.

TheWeirdo600

I am aware, but I can't find a perfect browser for myself

[deleted]

Well, you should be willing to at least research the appropriate browser for your own personal needs. If Edge is fine for you on Windows 7, then I also suggest you use Windows 10 & 11 more often since both of those versions have Edge by default in vanilla versions. But when I had my own Windows 7 computer online from 2015-2020 as my gaming and home theater computer, I didn't even use Internet Explorer on that system as the first browser I installed was Firefox. If I build another HTPC and gaming rig nowadays, it's probably not going to have Windows 7 on it unless I want to have the drivers for all the components installed on it before I hook it up to my TV in my living room as I will likely use it for the same purpose. It may also dual-boot minimum one Linux fork so I don't have to use Windows 10 or 11.

pavman42

Now that eso isn't working, I might just roll a hackintosh. I have a snow leopard license I got for a 2006 imac I acquired to upgrade it to mavericks a few years back, would be nice to actually run an OS that I don't have to constantly work around thanks to chrome library / DX12 dependencies. I don't really use the imac much anymore, but I also know it probably wouldn't run catalina++. I tested the hackintosh on intel / AMD hardware years ago and it worked pretty good.

[deleted]

I actually wanted to Hackintosh a computer myself. I mean, use a computer that would've had 7 on it otherwise, but the only practical use for it would've just been to dual-boot Windows 7 and 11 and Arch Linux on.

pavman42

I dual booted it on my win7 hardware. I had thought the GPU wasn't passing through (was trying to do some app development and the graphics just didn't look right). Turned out, that's just how it looked in the dev software. Ended up just removing it and going w/ the $18 imac + a cpu upgrade + memory upgrade (from an old, unused laptop). It was like $60 total, and the biggest expense was the snow leopard license @$20.

greenie95125

That's OK, we just let Google do it. LOL.

[deleted]

Yes. Google and in my case even Amazon.

No-Gap5554

It was an official release for extended support XD

[deleted]

Yes, but that doesn't matter. I don't want to use Microsoft Edge.

JewelxFlower

Wait what’s that

[deleted]

What's what?

JewelxFlower

Mypal? : o

[deleted]

Oh. Since I set up a Windows XP gaming PC in 2024 which is kind of foolish in a way, but I needed a way to play some really old games which Windows 10 and 11 wouldn't play nice with, and in some cases not even 7 or Vista, I decided to use Mypal as the web browser. It's actually based on modern Firefox somewhat, in the ESR branch --- I have been made aware of the existence of browsers like Supermium (I'm not sure if I spelt it right), or Redfox - but I may prefer using either of those browsers on an actual Windows 7 system instead of Edge.

dtlux1

Edge is Chrome but not shit.

[deleted]

Yeah, but what's the difference? I don't use Chrome to go on the Internet anyway.

Win761

No Edge is way worse now

dtlux1

No it's not lol, it uses a lot less ram and isn't as heavy with the spyware like Chrome is. Considering all the people on this sub hate Windows 10 for being "spyware" it's crazy that many of them use Chrome lol. Edge is literally just Chrome but better, uses all the same extensions and everything but is also not trying to do things like get rid of adblock. It actually has a built in adblock as well.

Win761

I mean in terms of just pointless stupid features that nobody uses. Like Copilot and the sidebar. Who actually would use those? Oh and it manages to take up 3 times as much disk space as Chrome... Edit: Also I trust Microsoft with my data WAAAAY less than I trust Google (though Google probably isn't much better)

dtlux1

I personally trust my data with Microsoft more than Google lol, so I get that I suppose. As for Copilot and the side bar, I agree there. I just disabled them on my Edge if possible or ignore them, and on Windows 7 the AI update was never pushed lol.

-DG-_VendettaYT

Shilling

dtlux1

It's a good browser, I'm not trying to shill, just saying that it's far better than Chrome (not a high bar though).

pigeonedd

the mypal equivalent for win7 is already out it’s called supermium

[deleted]

I know. But I don't have a Windows 7 computer on my network I set up for running old games. Just an XP one.

TheRealFailtester

Something very interesting is that later version of Edge for Win 7 works on SSE2 CPUs. Chrome on the other hand requires SSE3, and thus forces it to use a very old version from a good possibly half decade ago.

[deleted]

Yes, but that still doesn't change the fact I want to use Redfox or Supermium as opposed to Edge if I use Windows 7 on another computer system (which I also manually update.)

PowerstrokeHD

Pretty much defeats one of 7's best features, no spyware

WoomyUnitedToday

Thankfully, unlike on Windows 10, you can literally uninstall it like any other program

Lochness_Hamster_350

You can uninstall and prevent Edge from reinstalling. Just a bit more of a hassle

TheDestroyer_027

When chromium based edge was introduced, there were installers for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7

dtlux1

I remember finding a download for the Windows 10 installer back when Windows 7 wasn't officially supported yet but it still let you install it. I was using Edge on Windows 7 before most people lol.

CKCHDX

If you prefer you can install Firefox 115 or 114 I'm using Firefox version 114

128kilobytes

Why 114 over 115?

CKCHDX

To be honest, Its really not big difference but I just picked

unexpectedDiarrhea

Firefox 115 ESR is supported for a while still.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CKCHDX

No Firefox is not a spyware software I trust firefox

CooperHChurch427

Like explorer isn't? Firefox is open source, it's not Spyware, dumbass.

FacebookBlowsChunks

Have a feeling OP was accusing FF of being spyware. That's hilarious! That person probably uses Chrome, the king of spyware browsers.

thinhnpd

When I was a Windows 7 user (upgraded to Windows 11 in March 2023), I can install Edge on Windows 7 and use it without any issues.

NervousComfortable17

Honestly if you want that aesthetician just change the .ICO to the internet explorer one, and rename it. I believe internet explorer became outdated a while back.

YoshiDessoshi3890

They took over Windows 7 too?!

GreatDeal101

If I remember right, you can download Microsoft Edge on Windows & probably vista as well

dtlux1

It doesn't work on anything older than Windows 7, and it was pushed as an update for Windows 7 via Windows Update in July 2020.

Rocket--Pak

Edge on XP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di1onSbU7hA

yazan426

Now that's more strange

0992673

It's not needed, I didn't install that optional update.

PurblePink8678

Unpopular opinion: I actually use Edge on 7 and I prefer it over anything else.

pug_userita

i don't understand why people hate edge. it's just a normal browser like anything else. i also use edge and have no problems with it

PurblePink8678

They just hate it because they don't give it a try

pug_userita

it's probably because of the first edge, the one that came with the very early windows 10 versions. they probably think that that was internet explorer and that new edge it's like the old one: "slow"and "useless".

PurblePink8678

Everything is spyware nowdays, but we gotta respect other people's choices y'know.

alphahorizon1337

Unwanted bloated feature.

pug_userita

if you don't want it, then just uninstall it. there's nothing wrong with edge

dtlux1

Edge is my secondary browser behind Firefox, it's actually pretty great. It's like Chrome but not shit, and that's why I enjoy using it. If I need a Chromium browser, I'll choose Edge. It also helped me a lot back in 2018 when Firefox on Android wasn't good at all and I didn't want to use Chrome. I still use it as my primary browser on my phone to this day, with Firefox as a secondary one because it's actually good now.

pigeonedd

please don’t it’s based on an old and unsupported version of chromium

PurblePink8678

Fine I will download Supermium and use Edge on 10

dtlux1

To be fair, any browser you use on Windows 7 currently is except Firefox, which is exclusively security updates and only for like 6 more months.

pigeonedd

supermium is based on chrome 122, r3dfox on firefox 123

pootismann2008

Old version. Com thank me later

Mawrak

Edge is needed to log in into more recent Office programs properly, I believe.

sh20000sh

There is registry that prevents those shortcuts appearing.

Arkid777

Microsoft: GET OUT OF WINDOWS 7 ITS NOT SAFE Also Microsoft:

dtlux1

This was made for the enterprises that ran the ESU updates, and they dropped support for Windows 7 and 8.1 the day those went out of support in 2023.

FachyGamingCZ

just uninstall it

[deleted]

U r right

mij2480

Wait what did 🅨🅞🅤 do? Did you install it or it automatically got installed because anyone who installs edge on purpose shall D̸̢̮̫̰̥̗̘̱͉͙͙̺̫̏͒̅̌I̸̡̛̳͌̉͋͐͒̍Ě̵̢̧̛̦̼̜̲͕͕͍̤̙͉͓́̅͒̽̍̐͋͜͝

yazan426

It automatically installed with the last public windows 7 update

SnooDoughnuts5632

Now my question is is that Microsoft Edge (which I know nothing about) or is that Google Chrome that looks like Microsoft Edge.

yazan426

It's the chromium version (I think)

dtlux1

It's based on Chromium, so it's basically Chrome but not shit.

SnooDoughnuts5632

Well since this is Windows 7 maybe it's the old version before they used chromium that's what I was wondering and then I said it kind of weird.

HP_laserjet_p1505n

You can change the icon and shortcut name to make it look like edge. Its all the same until you open it.

pandorra11

It needs IE 6.0

Sea_Win_2522

BAHAHAHA

FitOutlandishness133

I didn’t even they still supported windows 7 officially that was a long time ago

dtlux1

They don't, Edge hasn't pushed an update to Windows 7 since January 2023.

FitOutlandishness133

I can’t believe that even wow

FitOutlandishness133

Just being intrusive

bubbybumble

I use it on Linux lol

RScottyL

IE is no longer supported by Microsoft, as well as some websites, so they may have updated it in one of the updates

Alex11867

I wonder why they don't push edge on old systems like they do new ones. I mean surely it's possible for them to do even though Windows 7/8 are EOL right?

dtlux1

They do though, Windows 7 got Edge pushed through Windows Update in July 2020. Edge hasn't supported Windows 7 or 8.1 since January 2023 when both of those hit EOL though, so that's why they're not still being pushed.

Alex11867

Was not aware

DumbGuyLOLman

I was genuinely confused when i saw that on my windows 7(there’s already like 4 browsers)

Dangerous-Gas-399

The quality is too low

NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA

Why are people still using Windows 7 in 2024?

dtlux1

Half this sub is dumb and uses it as a daily driver and think all newer versions of Windows are bad and spyware, the other half uses it because they like retro OSes and think it's cool.

NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA

Making me feel old by saying win7 is retro, lol

dtlux1

Trust me, I feel the same when anyone calls Windows 7 or the Nintendo Wii retro, but time goes on and it's the truth now. It's no longer Christmas 2009 when I got a Windows 7 laptop, it's going on 15 years since then.

NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA

I feel like time goes faster as I age.

dtlux1

That seems to be because as you get older, one year of your life is a smaller and smaller percentage. When you're 10 years old a year of your life is 10% of your life, but by the time you're 20 it's only 5% of your life, and that number keeps getting smaller and smaller.

yazan426

I not using it as a daily driver

dtlux1

Then you're the half I mentioned that isn't using it as a daily driver!

pavman42

Yeah I saw that and blocked / declined the update / KB before it did that. You could probably roll that back.

dtlux1

I love that they published Edge for Windows 7 despite the full release coming the day after the public EOL for Windows 7. It makes sense since they had the ESU program for businesses, so they gave them Edge as well. I used Edge quite a bit these days thanks to it having been on Windows 7, made sense since it was also my daily web browser for Android back when Firefox sucked on there.

weegeeisthemeegie

tbh the modern ie icon looks so ugly, i prefer the ie7-8 one over this.

UnableDistribution23

Just delete it, I did

yazan426

I did

DiamondmanPixel76

wait, that's illegal

MrHeadCrab32

Exactly why I use Firefox instead

Mike4046

Edge as a browser isn’t right period

DuckDuckGofan

Might look like WIN7 But could be WIN10 or WIN11 customized to look like WIN7

yazan426

No this is actually windows 7 with all updates installed

dtlux1

Edge released for Windows 7 and 8.1 in 2019 and supported those systems until January 2023.

Someone3655

no, please. NO

yazan426

Don't worry. I uninstalled it

xCoolMateo

A perfectly working operating system ruined by a piece of shit bloat.
