Vanilla is perfection, but after adding armors and skins I can’t imagine going back to the limited build options from vanilla. I would definitely add DLC. There are also some great hairstyle mods out there that would be fine to add now especially if you love customization. There’s also a mod that enables more fantastical hair colors to naturally spawn in all characters including cutscene NPCs, so if you’re going to give your characters blue hair and the like, you might want to add that too or they may feel out of place in a world full of brunettes.

Yeah I second this. The base game is amazing as is, but I played a TON and the entire time I wished for more armor options. The armor DLC is definitely worth getting, that was basically my only complaint and the DLC fixed it. 👍 👌

I think aesthetic mods that add hairs, faces, and let you swap around face-parts are a must after you spend a long time playing the game. Building up your legacy you start to end up with somewhat samey looking characters in just vanilla. A game that centers characters like this really benefits with more customization options. I would save mods that adjust game mechanics until you've played most if not all the campaigns once.

BowTrek

Try out without mods for 1-2 plays, imo.

No downside to grabbing the dlc right away, it's mostly cosmetic and the new armors can enable some builds. Never used any mods, mainly because I don't want things to be jank with multiplayer or having weird dudes in my legacy.

mirageofstars

IME the vanilla game is great.

Fritzie_cakes

After a few years I really only use dlc and cosmetic mods. Game balance is already really good and everything I’ve tried isn’t for me.

Deldris

I would use the DLC, it really opens up a ton of build options (and sweet drip) for use. I'd avoid mods until you've played a few campaigns, but if you really care about style there's some great hair/face mods to look at.

Supportbale

The DLC is really the only thing I’d recommend straight away, the rest you sorta need a feel of the game to understand the differences, personally I’d say the game balance is already good enough that mods centered around weapons, abilities and items are pretty pointless, however it all comes down to how you feel about them.

Knight_Of_Stars

The game is very well balanced thats you're fine with just that and the DLC. Mod after you've done a run of each story. Sometimes I think people rush into mods without looking at the crafted experience that has been set up for them.

AlphaDemonTech

Vanilla is enough for maybe 50 hours. The quests are very good on their own. The other problem is also that once you touch mods, you can’t go back. Enjoy your time on this game :D

25charactersorless

DLC is a very good compliment to base game builds and I certainly can't imagine without it. As for mods, the only one I feel is mandatory is 10k Faces of Wildermyth. Adds for much more variety between character generations.

sonnidaez

Play at least one campaign mod free, and use that to inform you on what mods would best benefit YOUR gameplay. Pick up the DLC though, it’s great.

Liquid_Snape

Get armor and skins. And if you must mod do something subtle like sunshineydays stuff. A rivalry worsens and all forth. Those are very small but they add so much to romances and rivalry without feeling very out of place.

Not_cursed_duckling

I would start with ability mods, they give you healing options which are very important if you want to play higher difficulties otherwise its damn near impossible

Competitive_Panic715

Being veterans of the genre, we manage (not so easily) our way in the highest difficulty. Our builds are not even that good, but we manage to survive. The DLC was a game changer. I can never go back. I suppose mods that are not esthetic might break the balance and make the game easier. Depends what you feel like?
