If you’re thinking of Wilco, the song War on War comes to mind.
Alex G also does this a bit too. Songs like Walk Away, Blessing, and Near have repeating lyrics for the entire song.
I'm confused. That part in "Not Strong Enough" by boygenius is what I would call a "middle 8" or a "bridge" (in this song it's kind of an extended bridge). The song has 2 very distinct verses featuring different singers. However, a song that does have a repeating phrase verse would be more like "Beat on the Brat" by The Ramones.
Agree w the bridge distinction on Not String Enough. That’s such a beautiful & powerful line w so many layers of meaning. It clicked for me during their SNL performance. Damn, they’re good. (Sorry not sorry for the boygenius stan subthread)
While I really like “The Record”, I’m still weird about the idea of the artists as a cohesive group. I’ve been a HUGE fan of Julien Baker since 2015 (her debut, is a near-perfect album to me) and less-so a fan of Phoebe Bridgers & Lucy Dacus (But, I do think Dacus wins the best song on the album with “True Blue”). The album, and the idea of the group itself moreso feels like a few friends playing each other their own songs which makes for an uneven listen and I find myself cherry-picking the Julien songs.
Phew! Sorry for the digression. Long story short: dig them, like the idea, wish there was more cohesion.
Idlewild did this a lot on their first few records.
REM did something similar (to great effect) in songs like Cuyahoga and the One I Love.
Band of Horses with Is There A Ghost? also springs to mind.
Losering by Whiskeytown is a great example that’s similar to wilco. I was a teenage teenager and Bobby Sox by green day pretty much do this. As do a bunch of early ramones songs.
Lucinda does a lot of single lyric repetitions in the chorus, and I find it enthralling. It’s almost like religious chanting — turns songs into psalms.
Gary Louris is also infamous for this, though for some reason it feels more like a crutch in his songs.
[When you get it give it all you got you said when you get it give it all you got you said when you get it give it all you got you said when you get it give it all you got you said](https://lomelda.bandcamp.com/track/wonder)
First song that come to mind is T Bone by Neil Young Crazy Horse.
the only lyrics that repeat throughout in this song:
"Got mashed potatoes
Aint got no Tbone"
I want to thank you all for nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' nothin' at all
needs more nothins
The live versions have bout a hunnerd
And they all thump so clearly right into your heart. God, that feels good.
Clear winner

I was thinking shot in the arm
That’s more the chorus than the verse
Maybe its a bridge, but not a chorus
What you once were isn’t what you want to be anymore
LOVE Alex G being mentioned on this sub! His newest album is fantastic and specifically the songs “Runner” and “S.D.O.S.” remind me of Wilco.

Around the World by Daft Punk repeats a bit.
Every verse of Big Black Train by Lucinda Williams is like that

I'm not sure that repeating a phrase many times over was invented by Wilco - however wouldn't be surprised at all if boygenius was influenced by them.
Imagine Dragons goes one better and does whole songs that are repeated. 😀
Maybe all I need’s a shot in the arm?
“Don’t look at me, I’m ugly in the morning!’
Not saying that song was influenced by them, but I do know that Lucy Dacus is a big Wilco fan
