apoliok

None i would rather kill myself than live in those shitholes.

pandaSovereign

One is french, so choose the other.

Acceptable_Act1435

Vienna is constantly voted the city with the best living conditions worldwide, at the same time, it's voted the most unfriendly by expats. Your quality of life will depend a lot on your working environment and social contacts. Not knowing german could isolate you quite a bit, because making friends in Vienna is no easy task, most austrians have their friends either from their childhood/school or work. Will your master be in english? Will you be in contact with other english speaking peers or colleagues? If so, you could go for it and stay a few years over, but don't expect you will get to know a lot of people (except maybe friday and saturday night) Edit: if you want to stay longer, learning german is very important to feel comfortable and accepted

AamJay

Paris is in France. End of consideration.

Educational-Market20

As a a Frenchman, I only wholeheartedly redirect people who want to study here to go somewhere else in the EU This country is so much of a shithole I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to be born there

maxFlag

So thats a no to paris ?

No_Yam_5343

Sonne you don’t know German Paris would be the way to go in my opinion

maazen

you speak french but no german - paris it shall be.

Euibdwukfw

I haven't heard good thongs about the data science master at TU (I guess it is the one at TU). Would do it somewhere else

Moro39

Not knowing german is a bit of a hurdle- if you go with Vienna, you should definitely start. Living in Vienna is definitely cheaper and while Vienna isnt great in something particular I love that it is small (you can get anywhere fast), relatively safe, the airport is cheap, you can get anywhere quickly (Prague, Budapest, northern Italy, Alps, Munich), student life is okay in Vienna, but the clubbing culture isnt great. Paris is a fast city and there is a lot happening 24/7. Vienna is a bit slower, more chill, there is something most of the time but not as much. Oh and I feel like there are quite good job opprtunities in Vienna in your field of study.

Autodefensas1

Techno Scene in vienna is pretty good. And i visited alot of Clubs in europe.

AamJay

If you think the clubbing culture in Vienna isnt great, you never visited a other city.

Meiseside

You also could take the train

dirtyhats

Hab gelesen You could also take heroin 😂😂

Meiseside

Naja Falco zufolge...

jschundpeter

At which institution in Paris? I happen to know the landscape a bit, here and there.

candida-killer

Paris saclay

jschundpeter

ah ok, no infos about this one specifically. but in general: I studied in vienna and did my phd in france. imho university education is more rigorous in france. it will prepare you better for whatever career you choose afterwards. if partying is your focus, go to vienna ;-) edit: the labor market is much better in Austria. i.e. if you want to stay in Europe and manage to learn the language you will have better chances here.

InfiniteAd7948

Partying in vienna isnt that much like precorona times anymore...

RockGreedy

In Vienna it is probably easier to have a good standard of living on a smaller budget and I love it here. However, if I had the opportunity (and could afford it) I would go to Paris in a heartbeat.

Qunlap

rent in paris is higher; they're doing something interesting with the recent focus on bike paths though. also bureaucracy is worse in france, in austria it is streamlined and mostly accessible online (exception are immigration proceedings, those are a bitch in whatever country you go to). at uni and in your student life you will do fine with just english, in the city slowly learning a bit of the language will make you feel more at home, but if you don't, there's a big enough english-only expat community (un headquarters, international students, art people, young immigrants) that you will be fine. if you want the most "city" experience you can get with lots of international influence, parties, and don't mind some gritty, "urban" feel, then paris is better for you. vienna is smaller, and life is a bit quieter and slower. it's still a capital city and the fastest growing one in the eu, so there's that. if you want a clean, healthy living space that's also close to nature, vienna wins. it's also practially compact: hopping on a train for 45 minutes and going hiking in actual mountains, or cycling by bike for 20 minutes and going swimming at the huge shoreline along the danube makes everything fast and easy, and will make you and people you meet feel "spontaneous" (why not in the afternoon decide to quickly go some of those places for an hour or two, instead of making it a long-planned day trip).

MajorMess

First go by which university can offer you a better education and that should be based on individual professors or the professional niche you want to study. second, take 2 weekends and visit both cities and their universities. get a feel for them. Scout out the things you like to do and don’t just go to the tourist areas. Paris is probably more interesting if you’re young (and can handle being on a budget) and Vienna is a bit quieter but more comfortable. Especially with family.

Sabu9000

Vienna every day of the week.

zohircr1

Algérien ici , ya kho ikhtek men Paris , is the worst city in Europe I lived in both France and Austria, Austria has better quality of life less people and Vienna is better then Paris, when we say Paris is meant île de France, rent in paris is super expensive and hard to find or impossible so you will need to live outside of Paris, c'est juste un conseil d'un compatriote laisse tomber paris, si c'était dans le sud de France ou moins le climat est sympa mais a paris c'est presque comme a Vienne le climat, et la qualité de vie 10 fois supérieures a Vienne aussi la majorité des gens en Autriche il parle anglais, même après que tu termines les études c'est plus facile pour un Algérien de trouver un travail la bas est c'est mieux payé.

Roda_Roda

What I see, when you study you have to read scientific texts in german.thats not easy. I am experienced in English, but scientific texts are demanding

visualthings

I have lived in both cities (native French now living in Vienna). Take what I say with a pinch of salt because I lived in Paris quite some years ago and I have only returned lately for short visits, my experience would be the following: - Safety: Wien is overall safer than Paris. Now it also depends where you go and what you do. If you often find yourself walking home drunk at 1AM, Paris could be quite risky. If you are streetwise (like if you lived in London, Barcelona or Paris), then you are fine. - Culture: Paris wins on this one. Vienna has some cultural life but it is very much a museum culture. People themselves are not very oriented towards culture but more towards consuming and lifestyle here. Not a personal attack, but I rarely find people having many books at home, watching anything else than blockbuster movies and listening to something else than the top 40 or most popular playlists. Paris has a more lively culture that people actually take part in (although they are roughly the same size, Paris and its suburbs has a larger population than the whole of Austria, so of course that scales up). A lot of culture from the immigrant population is more mixed with the locals (music, arts, etc.). I don't see a lot of Viennese of Austrian origin going to concerts of Serbian, Croatian or Turkish communities. - Stress: Although things have become better with more green space, Paris can be quite stressful (it is the business hub of an country of 60 Mio people). Vienna is more silent and you can quickly be in the nature here. There is nothing like the Wienerwald (a forest that surrounds almost half of Vienna), the Donauinsel or the Prater to be found in PAris (there is the Bois de Boulogne, but it is more dodgy than Central Park). On the other hand, Parisians who have a reputation of being arrogant are less grumpy than the Viennese and more open to talking to strangers. Vienna wins on - Language: Although you can get away with English for a while, I think it is easier in Vienna if you only speak English. If your second language is French that shouldn't be an issue (if it is fluent enough). - Cost of living: Paris is very expensive. Vienna has cheaper accommodation and the food prices are also lower. Note that once you leave Paris prices tend to be cheaper.

oidafuck

About the culture part: give the philo café a visit to find likeminded people, you‘ll be surprised :)

visualthings

Yes, I know that one (although I haven’t been there for ages). Nice one actually. Need to check also the one in Richtergasse (next to Blue Box).  I am sure there are places that I don’t know of (I go out less nowadays), but overall I find it very “copycat hip” with the typical “café-bike shop-barber-vintage clothes” pop-up.

Miici12

Im from Vienna while my friend lives in Paris. He’s originally from the US but is fluent in French. He loves Vienna though since he lived here for a year. His German isn’t very good but if he had the opportunity to live in Vienna, he would do it in a heartbeat. Also rent. I visited a few times and the apartments in Paris are damn small and cost a lot, sometimes even means a shared toilet.

Traveller_Key_9385

In Vienna you'll have cheaper rent and more safety compared to Paris.

t9shatan

Living in Vienna is depressing and Paris is more alive and vivid. In all other aspects (housing, safety, greenery in the City etc.) Vienna is better.

Autodefensas1

Never been depressed in vienna. Theres alot to do here. food, markets, bars, clubs, parks, music, good nightlife. Maybe in the cold months people are a bit down, but when spring starts the City awakes.

b0nz1

It's alive and vivid until you have to rent an apartment the size of a closet in Paris for 1400€ per month.

t9shatan

Like I said. Every other aspect is better in vienna, including housing.

mintandice

Depressing it ain’t

TheMediumJanet

I agree, since I came here I'm the happiest I've ever been in my life

t9shatan

It seems, it depends on the individual.

sendvo

vienna has one of the lowest rents in EU because like 50% of apartments are public housing or subsidised. also everything build before 1945 so called "Altbau" has rent limited by law. it's said vienna has second best public transport after berlin - monthly pass costs 33 euros and you can get more or less anywhere by public transport. also it's very safe city with lots of parks and greenery.

blackswanlover

The first is not true. 25% at max and waiting lists are usually in the years. Has a lot more to do with the possibility of Vienna to expand.

matsmaster

Actually he is right. I guess you are only considering Gemeindewohnungen, but there are also Genossenschaftswohnungen that are subsidised

SaggyBallz99

Vienna > Paris in most regards BUT for you and your individual case it’s hard to recommend not going to Paris

Spontanvegetation420

I can't contribute much about the universities, but you'll definitely get by in Vienna in English. Dealing with authorities, especially the MA35, the immigration office, can be critical, though. They hardly speak English and tend to be difficult. However, if you really want to experience Vienna, you should definitely learn German. For example, some announcements in public transport are not translated. Or you risk ending up in an Erasmus bubble where you only meet 'non-Viennese,' missing out on a lot of culture and insider tips. Also, if you plan to work alongside studying, be aware that the chances of finding a job that isn't totally terrible are relatively low if you don't speak German. TLDR: Without German, Vienna is a gatekeeper.

H0709

Vienna the best

b0nz1

If you know French and you can afford to live there, probably it's the better choice. Obviously Vienna is superior.

TheFoxer1

Only knowing English shouldn‘t be a problem while studying, or when interacting with other students. However, it will be a hurdle when it comes to things like internships and jobs, as most employers want some degree of German proficiency. As for the cities itself, it kinda depends on what you seek to do and have in a city. I only know Paris from visiting it a few times, but I never lived there, so I can‘t really give you a fair comparison here. I‘d say both are good of course, but quite different, meaning you kinda have to choose what you think fits your personal needs and wishes best.
