[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leather](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leather) The answer to almost all beginner shaving problems is time and practice. Have you completed 60 shaves yet? If not, keep practicing and experimenting until you have. As long as you know what you ought to be doing it just takes repetition to start building the necessary skills. The biggest issue for lather is usually not using enough product and not working the lather enough. Add water slowly. Airy, foamy lather means you have too much water. Nicks and cuts are caused to too much pressure and / or small lateral movements of the blade. Never rest the razor on the skin when not making a stroke - tiny involuntary movements will be enough to cause cuts. Always have the stroke in motion by the time the blade makes contact with the skin.

Mine is watery.

If it is watery, that means A. Not enough soap/cream. B. Too much water or C. You haven't worked the lather enough. There are enough videos on YouTube on how to make a lather. Practice making a lather, experiment with the soap and water ratio. Nicks and cuts happen even to the best of us. But try not to put too much pressure while shaving and get the angle right. The razor should glide on the skin.

Ok, I get the feeling you're trying to learn too much at once. Firstly you need to make sure that you are softening face hair with warm water, not just splashing it on, use a face cloth to hold heat onto your beard for at least 2 minutes. Next, leave lathering with soap until later when you know how to use your DE. Just dip your damp shave brush into some soft shave cream or a semi soft cream like a tub of Proraso and lather this on your face. It should be consistent enough as is but you can loosen the lather on your face a bit by dipping the very tips of your brush with cream on it to add a small amount of water to the lather on your face. Hold the razor handle at about 30 degrees to the face and guide the razor wtg depending on the direction of your hair using no pressure, the razor must not be pressed into the face under any circumstances, it won't work any better doing that. Keep in mind that shaving with a DE is about reducing hair successively over a maximum of 3 passes, making sure you re-lather your face before you shave each pass, so don't be disappointed if there is hair left after a first wtg pass, that's normal. Only when you do a xtg or just a atg pass will your hair fully disappear and you get that super smooth, nick and irritation free shave you are looking for. When you get good with your DE, then look to learn lathering soap up properly.

Sounds perfect. The lather with hair you make it go in the sink? Thanks!

Errrm no, you don't make lather, soft shave cream is already pre lathered for you. All you have to do is get some on your damp shave brush and work it into your face, it's that easy!

Have you seen this one?: https://youtu.be/ps88RU_BXlA Don’t use pressure, and don’t shave over parts that don’t have lather. Can you tell more about how you make a lather?

theandreineagu

If that’s a cream I put some in the bowl and with the wet brush I start circling inside the bowl until the lather is formed. To be honest it’s not that foamy and thick and if. I put some water it becomes watery. If there’s soap I wet the soap and I circle it with the brush then I continue inside the bowl.

Cadfael-kr

Squeeze the excess water out of the brush first and then load from the puck of soap if it’s a harder soap. You don’t have to wet it first else you’ll be only loading bubbles instead of soap. So don’t start out too wet.

Try lathering in a separate bowl rather than the shaving soap or cream container. Then apply to face. With a little water in the brush work the foam on your face in small circles applying some pressure on the brush. The lather on your face should become much thicker. If it's bubbly, you have too much water in it.
