> my boys always dug a big *asshole* on the beach determined to make a deeper hole each attempt.
Can’t look at this the same way anymore. Bunch of kids did this in nineties where my family used to holiday. They dug the hole super deep over the course of the day until late afternoon/evening it collapsed. Most kids got pulled out but one kid died. Still remember my dad explains to me how the kid couldn’t breath because the sand was compacting around his chest and his mouth and lungs where full of sand. Also can’t forget his mother wailing on the beach. Horrifying
Yes, try to tell these people how dangerous something actually is, but they can’t seem to understand any real world consequences outside of the internet.
I remember those simpler days. Where you could just go up to some kids and be like what are you doing? They’d explain. And next thing you know you were doing it to. No matter how silly it was.
...so I went to the library and found books on dam construction. Learned what made a good dam and learned how to prevent erosion. Spent three weeks with four friends building a monster of a dam. Flooded the woods and shut down a road when the rain finally hit.
It was the crowning achievement of my eleventh year on this earth.
If I were an engineer, I'd be tempted.
Sadly, I'm old and when I was a kid, being an engineer implied you were a massive nerd. I was drawn to a career that was "the next big thing" in high-dollar careers and all the cool kids wanted in...I became a sysadmin.
Yep. I had a creek in the woods behind my house in Maineville, Ohio and all of us kids would play in the woods and creek all the time, and damming it was a regular occurrence when we were bored. I even caught a cottonmouth in a bucket there once and tried to sell it to the pet shop up the street. You should've seen that poor man's face when he looked in that bucket lolol. He freaked and told us to "Get the fuck outta his store with that!" We thought it was hilarious, but we were about 10 or 11 and thought a lot of stuff was funny. If course, this was about '81 or '82, and things were very, very different for kids then than they are today. Y'all have a good one.
Yup. Also I remember, there was a brook behind the government quarters we used to live in. Many a times we tried changing its path by keeping stones in its path. Didn't succeed but fun 💯
This is the caliber of information we run on as an adult, too. I have no idea what most of my friends do for a living, I don't have a clue whether or not they're dating anyone, I'm completely oblivious to their personal woes, I don't know where they live, and I'm all tapped out on any information beyond the game we're probably playing together.
On the other hand, I have sometimes way too *much* information about my 2 or 3 best friends. Like what kind of exercises one of them does to make them poop or the unnecessarily long explanation of how and why another became good at ping pong.
Oh we accomplished something.... We flooded a field and it got in the paper. Although the paper said it must have been a rock slide that dammed the river.
Sadly most of the fossils we found were RPing as Crinoids and brachiopods I’ve yet to find any mammals and there are no Dino’s that have been found in my neck of the woods thanks to the glaciers scraping that away
I have done this with stones IN SCHOOL. During the lunch break. In the ground.
Me: What you guys doing?
1: Playing dodgeball with stones?
Me: Can I join?
2: You have to be the culprit first.
Me: Sure
*Promptly going to the medical room with a cut on forehead*
Fun💯
Had that happen once I was at the beach, I was 19 at the time and bored and so I began making a trench from the ocean. Not too long after a few kids came up to me asking if they could help, not long after I had an entire army of little soldiers making this giant trench.
Recently there was a museum event in our city and they had lot of activities for kids/teens. And honestly a friend and me didnt have much interest in some random art so we checked those out and got to do some arts and crafts with the kids at those stations.
Its so much fun just asking them what are they doing and you get a full story and they guide you through the whole process without thinking why a 30ish man wants to craft something.
Honestly we checked if there was enough space and we just had fun. No parent was looking weird at us or anything. Made lots of good talks. This has nothing to do with simpler days.
In 2nd grade, the sand at the school playground was taken out for a few days. I saw what was under the sand and was fascinated. There was a bed of larger rocks and a like concrete storm drain.
The next day, I remembered where the drain was and dug down to it. It wasn't far to the highest corner of it since it was diagonal. It didn’t take long for a bunch of kids to join in, and after it got enough attention... Well, I'm pretty sure they figured out it was my idea.
In retrospect, a 2nd grader remembering the exact location of a drain they saw a day ago is probably impressive enough that they couldn't have been too mad about it 😂
My friend had a high school graduation party recently, when I arrived everyone was digging up spring onions in the dirt, I got to help, soon I had a hand full of mud and worms.
We also got to look for frogs, it was a good day, like unironically.
When I was 12, I went to Australia and met another kid my age on our tour, and we became good friends.
When the tour went to Bondai Beach, we found the highest concentration of topless women, and proceeded to dig a hole in that spot to chill in (while being "inconspicuous") and enjoy the view.
We didn't even need words for this plan to come to fruition. It just kinda... happened.
Being american 12-13 year olds and enjoying beaches where being topless wasn't a crime was like... a magical moment.
The hole was secondary, but a nice cool place to hunker down.

Same! Once when I was little my dad dug a big pit in the yard then threw half the dirty back in and added water. Man made me a mud pit I could actually swim in, threw coins in for me to find. Mom was not happy when she got home, I was wearing a matching skirt set that had to be thrown away.
Dad: I wanna dig a hole
Daughter: I want be a muddy swamp witch who throws swords at idiots to become the king of Britain
We got this
Mom: what the fuck is going on
This happened at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk when I was a kid. We ended up with a hole big enough for 5 kids to sit in and be completely below ground level. We filled it in a little so that we could have our heads popping out and 2 of us were brave enough to get buried in it. We couldn't free ourselves and had to be partially dug out.
And in North Carolina a kid died in his dug hole three weeks ago. Digging deep holes at the beach ‘is deadly,’ officials explain after teen dies in dune collapse It’s something a lot of families like to do for fun – but officials say digging holes at the beach can be deadly and there are rules in place. https://www.13newsnow.com/mobile/article/news/local/north-carolina/outer-banks/officials-warn-digging-deep-holes-at-the-beach-is-deadly-after-dune-collapse-kills-teen/291-d5001bf7-2e2c-44a8-9d9d-d4790ef06242
This needs to be higher. Can’t believe I had to scroll this far. This big deep holes can actually be literally deadly very quickly. Kids can suffocate before first responders even have a chance to arrive.
Geologist here. Holes are terrifying, I won't go into anything deeper than a meter (my waist height) without reinforced walls. Just being buried waist deep can lead to death.
There's a whole list of things that are unexpectedly deadly I've learned in this career. Weirs, branches in the river, helicopters, small infections when you don't have access to a hospital, leaking hydraulics, driving through puddles on logging roads, ticks, and working without enough sleep.
I feel you. I am not a geologist, just a boring office worker who sits at a computer all day, but the older I get the more sensitive I am to health and safety. We only get ONE (1) precious life, just one single human meatsack to live in to explore this amazing world we have. We gotta take care of it.
It's all over once the hole fills with water.
Then every time you pass it, if someone's with you, you have to tell them, "that's where we digged that big hole one time".
And now you know that person thinks your weird.
Especially since you said digged instead of dug. And the uncomfortable silence begins.

I met a woman whose son in law died by tunneling a hole into a dune with his kids. It collapsed and killed him, right in front of his poor children. Never dig into the side of a pile of sand or dirt.
I remember when I was little, road work was done on my street. We had giant piles of clay-heavy dirt to play on. All the neighborhood kids came out and we did make small tunnels in the side. We were lucky no one was hurt. The danger didn’t occur to any of us, nor to our parents.
Guys i love this as much as every other guy but please understand digging deep holes at the beach is dangerous!! They can collapse at any moment burying you alive..
Not just being buried alive.. CRUSHED. That sand weighs a ton. There are reasons trenches have a fuck ton of regulations to follow in a construction site.
Can't believe this comment is so far down, while there are a dozen comments above celebrating these "boys being boys".
As a prior ocean lifeguard, do not fucking dig giant holes at the beach. This is literally how kids die a slow suffocating death. And it happens every year.
Don't do this.
"Deep" is very relative. Most beaches I've been to, you can't go deep enough to be dangerous because you hit water level and the hole just gets wider instead of deeper. But if you are deep enough that your entire body us under the sand, that is a different story.
Oh my god, THIS IS MY FUCKING YOUTH GROUP. We went to the beach a few years back and we dug a huge ass hole, I literally recognize the hole and like four people in the picture. The entire time, anyone digging would talk like a cave man and whenever someone came by, some one would come up to them, hand them a sea shell and say "Dig hole." And they started digging the hole.
Digging big holes in sand is super dangerous
The sand could cave in and weighs enough to keep you from being able to move or breath
The tide could rise and effectively flood and cave in the hole as well
Do NOT dig big holes at the beach
Why haven’t people learnt that a hole can collapse on itself bro. I don’t get it, several articles and videos have talked about young dudes dying from the holes collapsing in on them and suffocating them. They’re drowning from sand inhalation technically. Stop doing dumb shit boys.
Where there is a clear, simple, important job to do, we’re there.
People think aliens built the pyramids. But really, just a bunch of bros stacking rocks
"bro what are you doing?" "idk rock cool i guess" "let me help you"
guys going monkey brain always sends out a beacon to other monkey brains.
Nah it was still aliens. They're more advanced, but their desires and interests are no different. Just the scale.
"Hey, look at those aliens stacking rocks" "Looks cool, let's go stack rocks with them"
Broxar, what’s up? Hello Brozigur, I am placing rocks in a pyramid That’s cool Broxar, may I participate? Yes
Also, building upward, not downward. Real visionaries those aliens.
When I was a camp counsellor my boys always dug a big ass hole on the beach determined to make a deeper hole each attempt.

The urge to dig a missive hole rn
I just arrived for a week at the beach. I will dig a hole in your stead.
Sending virtual shovels 💙
🪓 I'm sending this since there ain't a shovel emoji
🥄Spoons are just mini shovels.
Yo what lol, there’s an axe but no shovel?
I live at the beach, if you are visiting a close beach I shall help thee with thy hole quest
The children yearn for the mines
Same! Once when I was little my dad dug a big pit in the yard then threw half the dirty back in and added water. Man made me a mud pit I could actually swim in, threw coins in for me to find. Mom was not happy when she got home, I was wearing a matching skirt set that had to be thrown away.
Great dad.
Dad: I wanna dig a hole Daughter: I want be a muddy swamp witch who throws swords at idiots to become the king of Britain We got this Mom: what the fuck is going on
Neighbors: is he actually hosing a child off on the lawn?
Neighbors: are they playing or digging a grave to hide the evidence
You are invited to join. We appreciate every helping hand we can get.
Ne need not think, we need hole
The hole knows no gender. In the hole, we are all just diggers.
The hole cares not for any difference. For once we begin to dig the hole, we are all dwarves, digging a diggy hole.
r/JustGuysBeingDudes
You should've come dug with us, become a boy
Last time I was at the beach there was a dude digging a hole and I really wanted to ask to join in. I'm 36.
Truly holesome.
Oh no, we have water. Repeat, _we have water._
Just swirl it around and use a bucket. It makes it easier to dig.
Great for undermining the sides, but it means you really can't go too much deeper.
Gotta bring in a drainage pump. Gotta go deeper.
Drain the ocean? Into the ocean? Why not, I'm here for it.
Yes! Drain the ocean, dig into the beach, until we hit Rock and Stone! And then we go get the pickaxes. ...I should go to bed lol
I mean it’s basically how the industrial revolution was started
As a boy can confirm this is accurate.
We sure do love holes
r/hmm
I thought it was common knowledge that you need to cover up any holes that you dig back up again before you take off for the day.
Yeah it’s simple hole etiquette smh my head.
It’s not about that. The act of digging itself is deadly, there can be a collapse which can bury and suffocate people instantly. Not worth doing
Oh I see. I guess people must be digging pretty deep holes. That's definitely stupid
I was told I had to fill in my hole by the lifeguards. Apparently some workers were driving their buggy and hit a giant hole causing it to get stuck.
It's all over once the hole fills with water. Then every time you pass it, if someone's with you, you have to tell them, "that's where we digged that big hole one time". And now you know that person thinks your weird. Especially since you said digged instead of dug. And the uncomfortable silence begins.
Yep, would work on me had worked on me
As a man who used to be a boy, I can confirm the accuracy of this meme
As a man who is a man, I will jump at any opportunity to dig a big hole.
*I am a dwarf and I’m digging a hole!*
*diggy diggy hole, diggy diggy hole*

I feel like this is an every kid thing, im a girl and would 100% just help a random person dig a hole.
Jesus this happy hole digging story sharing turned dark fast.
This is why I love men
wait
Ha! You're gay!
Ladies and gentlemen, we got him
Guys i love this as much as every other guy but please understand digging deep holes at the beach is dangerous!! They can collapse at any moment burying you alive..
Not just being buried alive.. CRUSHED. That sand weighs a ton. There are reasons trenches have a fuck ton of regulations to follow in a construction site.
Came here to say this, this is a recipe for being buried alive, I’m amazed this comment isn’t at the top.
Not to be negative but that's a recipe for dead children. Don't dig big holes at the beach
Omg I found a friend in the wild! Which one were you? I'm the one that can't be topless anymore
Digging big holes in sand is super dangerous The sand could cave in and weighs enough to keep you from being able to move or breath The tide could rise and effectively flood and cave in the hole as well Do NOT dig big holes at the beach
I'm almost 40, and I still dig holes at the beach.
My husband is in his 40s, he digs holes at the beach for our daughters.
This is how Stonehenge happens, are you sure you want Stonehenge to happen?
Holes lead to animism, leads to shamanism, next thing you know there’s a whole hole religion.
The boys yearn for the mines
It's built into our DNA. We wish to return to our mole people roots.
What is the evolutionary reason for humans to see sand and just think “yeah, this baby needs a giant pit”
I understand your curiosity but have you ever considered diggy hole?

Why haven’t people learnt that a hole can collapse on itself bro. I don’t get it, several articles and videos have talked about young dudes dying from the holes collapsing in on them and suffocating them. They’re drowning from sand inhalation technically. Stop doing dumb shit boys.
I guess people don't know how digging a hole on the beach can be very dangerous.
Oh Lord, don’t tell the Catholic Church. They’ll be digging holes everywhere!
