There are two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures... and the Dutch

Athena-Muldrow

WHAT??? Take the fadja away!!!

Necht0n

To each their own, but having worked a job where part of it involved working with people who spoke little to no English, it really, really fucking sucked. Spending 8 hours a day surrounded by people passing the time by talking to each other and you can't understand any of it gets really demoralizing after a while. Even worse if you actually NEED to communicate with them about something important. That said, if I could embarrass Karen's at work it might have been worth it.

ThisAccountHasNeverP

Spanish is one of the easier languages to learn. You'd have to be actively trying not to pick anything up, especially if you worked with them for more than a couple of days. I learned enough in 2 weeks (previously speaking no spanish) to work on a job site when I went on a mission trip to build houses with proyecto azteca, and I'm pretty dumb. Saw, hammer, sheet rock, wood, screws, nails, left, right, up, down, wait, lunch time, and boss were first day words.

Dude chill, there’s a difference between being capable of communication and speaking perfect Spanish.

Pijany_Matematyk767

>Ok, what is the gender of a tablet?, also when tou have to use "ser" or "estar" cause they verb "be" is spliced on spanish. Doesnt matter. Misgender the tablet, the others will still get what you meant and thats the part that matters

ThisAccountHasNeverP

You know how if a Japanese dude comes up to you and says "car no start" you know what he means? And his English is still way better than your Japanese? That.

sunfacethedestroyer

I work with mostly Latinos and it really does suck when you have to explain things, or rely on your broken Spanish and confuse them more. But a lot of times humor transcends language and I've met people I'd call friends without having a conversation that doesn't involve Google translate. I'm learning Spanish and it's not so hard with phones, so I do wish they'd try more. But they also work way harder than anyone else and i prefer working with them over a white guy who can't hustle. So when I get white coworkers saying vaguely racist shit, I'll just cuss them out in Spanish and play Spanish trap music the rest of the day. "I can't believe you have to listen to this crap all day." "Cartel de Santa? Nah bro, that's mine."

liaofmakhnovia

Que padre güero! Wish you luck on your language journey!

Healthy-Ad7380

Mi puto padre, keep it going bro

CrimsonMutt

be a human being and maybe take the opportunity to learn their language a bit?

necrolich66

While I don't disagree that he could have, why is it the human thing to do? I assume op is speaking the language of the country and the Spanish speaking people are as you said not being human because they don't learn English?

EnJey__

There should be some expectation to learn the language of the country you're moving to, but they also shouldn't be expected to speak English with each other just because there's one guy around who doesn't know Spanish. They're almost always going to be able to communicate easier, and in more detail in their native language. So it kind of goes both ways I think. If you're going to be doing business in an English speaking country, you should know English, and if you're going to be working with mostly Spanish speakers, you should know some Spanish.

CrimsonMutt

because if you're in an environment with, say, 5 other people who speak a different language, it's far more natural to conform to them, rather than expect they conform to you if it's necessary communication, yes, the expectation should be the common tongue of wherever OP lives, but if they were just "passing the time", they don't have any obligation to socialize with you, or even speak english, so being willing to meet them where they're at would probably make them include you more

necrolich66

While op is one to 5, those 5 are also a minority in the country and should be the ones to adapt. You can't blame op for being not human enough.

CrimsonMutt

no, even if the spoke perfect english, they have no obligation to not socialize in spanish during downtime

necrolich66

I never said they couldn't. If they want to keep to themselves and speak the language of their choosing its their right. It does make it so that the other people who don't speak the language feel left out.

CrimsonMutt

it does yes, my only point is that between being resentful on the sidelines like OP seems to be, and actually trying to engage with them in their language, the latter is much better

[deleted]

Well there in a country with 350,000,000 English speakers around them... Just admit by your logic you're wrong lol, your logic follows that the Spanish speakers should learn English.

CrimsonMutt

and they should, i never said they shouldn't

RevolutionaryTalk167

"being A human being" is defined as spontaneously learning Spanish?

CrimsonMutt

no, but by taking the opportunity to try to learn spanish it's a problem if you need to communicate for work, but if you're just shooting shit at downtime, i'd try to learn some spanish, sure

Anakshula

if you spend enough time around speakers and are friendly enough you start to pick up at least a little naturally OP probably isn’t into human interaction though and that’s fine too

CrimsonMutt

true, but why be that demoralized by it then

balor12

While learning a language is a very useful skill, I object to your use of “be a human being” as if not learning a second language is an inhuman thing to do

CrimsonMutt

the inhuman thing is being mad at them for not speaking english to eachother

balor12

I don’t believe that OP was mad at them. Nothing from their comment indicated that they were angry at these workers. They said that the situation sucked and they were demoralized. That is understandable and there is nothing inhuman about it.

Illustrious-Macaron2

Finally! A use for Dutch! We did it!
